The effect of biofilm growth on the sulfur oxidation pathway and the synergy of microorganisms in desulfurization reactors under different pH conditions

Enhanced corrosion of 2205 duplex stainless steel by Acetobacter aceti through synergistic electron transfer and organic acids acceleration

Acetobacter aceti is a microbe that produces corrosive organic acids, causing severe corrosion of industrial equipment. Previous studies have focused on the organic acid corrosion of A. aceti, but neglected the possibility that it has electron transfer corrosion. This study found that electron transfer and organic acids can synergistically promote the corrosion of 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS). Electrochemical measurement results showed that corrosion of 2205 DSS was more severe in the presence of A. aceti. Surface analysis indicated a thick biofilm formed on the steel surface, with low pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations under the biofilm. Corrosion intensified when A. aceti lacked a carbon source, suggesting that A. aceti can corrode metals by using metallic substrates as electron donors, in addition to its acidic by-products.

Assessing the efficiency and microbial diversity of H2S-removing biotrickling filters at various pH conditions

This study aimed to investigate the operation of three parallel biotrickling filters (BTFs) in removing H2S at different pH conditions (haloalkaliphilic, neutrophilic, and acidophilic) and their associated microbial population in the biodesulfurization process. BTF columns were inoculated with enriched inoculum and experiments were performed by gradually reducing Empty Bed Retention Time (EBRT) and increasing inlet concentration in which the maximum removal efficiency and maximum elimination capacity in EBRT 60 s reached their maximum level in haloalkaline condition (91% and 179.5 g S-H2S m-3 h-1). For visualizing the attached microbial biofilms on pall rings, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used and microbial community structure analysis by NGS showed that the most abundant phyla in haBTF, nBTF, and aBTF belong to Gammaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Acidithiobacillia, respectively. Shannon and Simpson indexes evaluation showed a lower diversity of bacteria in the aBTF reactor than that of nBTF and haBTF and beta analysis indicated a different composition of bacteria in haBTF compared to the other two filters. These results indicated that the proper performance of BTF under haloalkaliphilic conditions is the most effective way for H2S removal from air pollutants of different industries.

Contrasting response strategies of sulfate-reducing bacteria in a microbial consortium to As3+ stress under anaerobic and aerobic environments

The sulfate-reducing efficiency of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is strongly influenced by the presence of oxygen, but little is known about the oxygen tolerance mechanism of SRB and the effect of oxygen on the metalliferous immobilization by SRB. The performance evaluation, identification of bioprecipitates, and microbial and metabolic process analyses were used here to investigate the As3+ immobilization mechanisms and survival strategies of the SRB1 consortium under different oxygen-containing environments. Results indicated that the sulfate reduction efficiency was significantly decreased under aerobic (47.37%) compared with anaerobic conditions (66.72%). SEM analysis showed that under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, the morphologies of mineral particles were different, whereas XRD and XPS analyses showed that the most of As3+ bioprecipitates under both conditions were arsenic minerals such as AsS and As4S4. The abundances of Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Desulfovibrio, and Thiomonas anaerobic bacteria were significantly higher under anaerobic than aerobic conditions, whereas the aerobic Pseudomonas showed an opposite trend. Network analysis revealed that Desulfovibrio was positively correlated with Pseudomonas. Metabolic process analysis confirmed that under aerobic conditions the SRB1 consortium generated additional extracellular polymeric substances (rich in functionalities such as Fe-O, SO, CO, and -OH) and the anti-oxidative enzyme superoxide dismutase to resist As3+ stress and oxygen toxicity. New insights are provided here into the oxygen tolerance and detoxification mechanism of SRB and provide a basis for the future remediation of heavy metal(loid)-contaminated environments.

Advanced oxidation of bio-treated incineration leachate by persulfate combined with heat, UV254 nm, and UV365 nm: Kinetics, mechanism, and toxicity

This study compared and evaluated the ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) at 254 or 365 nm and heat/persulfate (heat/PS) systems for advanced treatment of biologically pre-treated incineration leachate. The UV365 nm/PS system with the highest removal reduced chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 81.7%, total organic carbon by 73.8%, NH3-N by 96.8%, total nitrogen by 47.3%, and color by 98.6% within 24 h, separately. Kinetics tests suggested that a highest concentrations of 4.8 × 10-10 M for [SO4·-]ss and 2.8 × 10-11 M for [·OH]ss were reported in UV365/PS and UV254/PS systems, respectively. Characterization of leachate organic matter species revealed that low molecular weight organic matter < 5 kDa was preferentially degraded in three systems. Ketones are relatively easily degraded by both heat/PS and UV/PS systems, whereas esters were the most recalcitrant. Three-dimensional fluorescence analysis revealed > 99% humic acid and fulvic acid removal in all three systems. In practical applications, it is crucial to consider the pH and toxicity of SR-AOPs in the treatment of bio-treated incineration leachate. Furthermore, the ecotoxicity of MBR effluent treated by the heat/PS system and UV365 nm/PS system increased, which was caused by the strong acidity exhibited in the systems. In addition, we found that PS could interfere with 3.3% of the COD's detection. The findings of this study suggest that secondary effects of PS on water quality at high doses should be investigated in future research.

Biofilm metagenomic characteristics behind high coulombic efficiency for propanethiol deodorization in two-phase partitioning microbial fuel cell

Hydrophobic volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs) are frequently found during sewage treatment, and their effective management is crucial for reducing malodorous complaints. Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are effective for both VOSCs abatement and energy recovery. However, the performance of MFC on VOSCs remains limited by the mass transfer efficiency of MFC in aqueous media. Inspired by two-phase partitioning biotechnology, silicone oil was introduced for the first time into MFC as a non-aqueous phase (NAP) medium to construct two-phase partitioning microbial fuel cell (TPPMFC) and augment the mass transfer of target VOSCs of propanethiol (PT) in the liquid phase. The PT removal efficiency within 32 h increased by 11-20% compared with that of single-phase MFC, and the coulombic efficiency of TPPMFC (11.01%) was 4.32-2.68 times that of single-phase MFC owing to the fact that highly active desulfurization and thiol-degrading bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonas, Achromobacter) were attached to the silicone oil surface, whereas sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (e.g., Thiobacillus, Commonas, Ottowia) were dominant on the anodic biofilm. The outer membrane cytochrome-c content and NADH dehydrogenase activity improved by 4.15 and 3.36 times in the TPPMFC, respectively. The results of metagenomics by KEGG and COG confirmed that the metabolism of PT in TPPMFC was comprehensive, and that the addition of a NAP upregulates the expression of genes related to sulfur metabolism, energy generation, and amino acid synthesis. This finding indicates that the NAP assisted bioelectrochemical systems would be promising to solve mass-transfer restrictions in low solubility contaminates removal.

Roles, mechanism of action, and potential applications of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria for environmental bioremediation

Sulfur (S) is a crucial component in the environment and living organisms. This work is the first attempt to provide an overview and critical discussion on the roles, mechanisms, and environmental applications of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB). The findings reveal that key enzymes of SOB embarked on oxidation of sulfide, sulfite, thiosulfate, and elemental S. Conversion of reduced S compounds was oxidatively catalyzed by various enzymes (e.g. sulfide: quinone oxidoreductase, flavocytochrome c-sulfide dehydrogenase, dissimilatory sulfite reductase, heterodisulfide reductase-like proteins). Environmental applications of SOB discussed include detoxifying hydrogen sulfide, soil bioremediation, and wastewater treatment. SOB producing S⁰ engaged in biological S soil amendments (e.g. saline-alkali soil remediation, the oxidation of sulfide-bearing minerals). Biotreatment of H₂S using SOB occurred under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Sulfide, nitrate, and sulfamethoxazole were removed through SOB suspension cultures and S⁰-based carriers. Finally, this work presented future perspectives on SOB development, including S⁰ recovery, SOB enrichment, field measurement and identification of sulfur compounds, and the development of mathematical simulation.

The Comparison of Biotreatment and Chemical Treatment for Odor Control during Kitchen Waste Aerobic Composting

Odor ΨΩγemission has become mathvariant="normal" mathvariant="sans-serif-bold-italic" an important issue in kitchen waste management. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide are the two most important odor sources as they contribute malodor and can cause health problems. As biotreatment and chemical treatment are two majorly applied technologies for odor control, in this study, they were used to remove ammonia and hydrogen sulfide and the performance of each process was compared. It was found that chemical absorption could efficiently eliminate both ammonia and hydrogenmathvariant="script" sulfide, and the removal efficiencies of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide highly depended on the pH of the adsorbent, contacting time, and gas and solution ratio (G/S). The ammonia-removal efficiency reached 100% within less than 2 s at G/S 600 and pH 0.1. The complete removal of hydrogen sulfide was achieved within 2 s at G/S 4000 and pH 13. Biotrickling filter showed better ability for hydrogen sulfide removal and the removal efficiency was 91.9%; however, the ammonia removal was only 73.5%. It suggests that chemical adsorption is more efficient compared to biotreatment for removing ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. In the combination of the two processes, biotrickling filter followed by chemical adsorption, the final concentrations of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide could meet the Level 1 standard of Emission Standards for Odor Pollution (China). The study provides a potential approach for odor control during kitchen waste aerobic composting.

The mixed/mixotrophic nitrogen removal for the effective and sustainable treatment of wastewater: From treatment process to microbial mechanism

Biological nitrogen removal (BNR) is one of the most important environmental concerns in the field of wastewater treatment. The conventional BNR process based on heterotrophic nitrogen removal (HeNR) is suffering from several limitations, including external carbon source dependence, excessive sludge production, and greenhouse gas emissions. Through the mediation of autotrophic nitrogen removal (AuNR), mixed/mixotrophic nitrogen removal (MixNR) offers a viable solution to the optimization of the BNR process. Here, the recent advance and characteristics of MixNR process guided by sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SDAD) and anammox are summarized in this review. Additionally, we discuss the functional microorganisms in different MixNR systems, shedding light on metabolic mechanisms and microbial interactions. The significance of MixNR for carbon reduction in the BNR process has also been noted. The knowledge gaps and the future research directions that may facilitate the practical application of the MixNR process are highlighted. Overall, the prospect of the MixNR process is attractive, and this review will provide guidance for the future implementation of MixNR process as well as deciphering the microbially metabolic mechanisms.
