"Two-in-one" dual-function luminescent MOF hydrogel for onsite ultra-sensitive detection and efficient enrichment of radioactive uranium in water

Ratiometric luminescent simultaneous sensing of aristolochic acids (I-IV) by a novel metal-organic framework and its nanowire

Aristolochic acids (AAs), which are a group of nitrophenanthrene carboxylic acids formed by Aristolochia plant, have become an increasing serious threat to humans due to their nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity. Fast and accurate approaches capable of simultaneous sensing of aristolochic acids (I-IV) are vital to avoid intake of such compounds. In this research, the novel ratiometric fluorescence zinc metal-organic framework and its nanowire have been prepared. The two different coordination modes (tetrahedral configuration and twisted triangular bipyramidal configuration) within zinc metal-organic framework lead to the significant double emissions. The ratiometric fluorescence approach based on nanowire provides a broader concentration range (3.00 × 10-7~1.00 × 10-4 M) and lower limit of detection (3.70 × 10-8 M) than that based on zinc metal-organic framework (1.00 × 10-6~1.00 × 10-4 M, 5.91 × 10-7 M). The RSDs of the results are in the range 1.4-3.5% (nanowire). The density functional theory calculations and UV-Vis absorption verify that the sensing mechanism is due to charge transfer and energy transfer. Excellent spiked recoveries for AAs(I-IV) in soil and water support that nanowire is competent to simultaneously detect these targets in real samples, and the proposed approach has potential as a fluorescence sensing platform for the simultaneous detection of AAs (I-IV) in complex systems.

MOFs-Based Materials with Confined Space: Opportunities and Challenges for Energy and Catalytic Conversion

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a very promising material in the fields of energy and catalysis due to their rich active sites, tunable pore size, structural adaptability, and high specific surface area. The concepts of "carbon peak" and "carbon neutrality" have opened up huge development opportunities in the fields of energy storage, energy conversion, and catalysis, and have made significant progress and breakthroughs. In recent years, people have shown great interest in the development of MOFs materials and their applications in the above research fields. This review introduces the design strategies and latest progress of MOFs are included based on their structures such as core-shell, yolk-shell, multi-shelled, sandwich structures, unique crystal surface exposures, and MOF-derived nanomaterials in detail. This work comprehensively and systematically reviews the applications of MOF-based materials in energy and catalysis and reviews the research progress of MOF materials for atmospheric water harvesting, seawater uranium extraction, and triboelectric nanogenerators. Finally, this review looks forward to the challenges and opportunities of controlling the synthesis of MOFs through low-cost, improved conductivity, high-temperature heat resistance, and integration with machine learning. This review provides useful references for promoting the application of MOFs-based materials in the aforementioned fields.

Biomass chitosan/sodium alginate colorimetric imprinting hydrogels with integrated capture and visualization detection for cadmium(II)

Due to Cd(II) with highly toxic, persistent and bioaccumulative, the discharge of it into the environment brings serious pollution. Developing strategies that are efficient, low-cost, pollution-free and specific to removing Cd(II) from wastewater is therefore of great urgency and prime importance. A novel chitosan/sodium alginate ionic imprinting(IICA) hydrogels with specific adsorption capacity for Cd(II) was prepared through freeze-thaw and ion imprinting, and finally the colorimetric sensor (IICAS) was prepared via introducing Rhodamine B(RhB) and Victoria blue(VBB) by immersion to achieve visual detection of Cd(II). The IICA hydrogels with imprinted hole structure had higher adsorption capacity and better specific selectivity for Cd(II). As well as internal diffusion, coordination, ion exchange, and hydrogen bonding influenced the adsorption rate. Moreover, the IICAS exhibited good selective detection ability and linearity for Cd(II) with the fitted correlation coefficient (R2) = 0.98, limit of detection (LOD) = 35 nmol/L. Combined with the smartphone platform, portable and quantitative detection of Cd(II) can be achieved, Within the 0-100 mg/L range, R2 remained 0.94, and LOD was 75 nmol/L. This strategy of preparing a novel whole biomass IICAS integrating capture and visual detection provides a new insight into the construction of a promising candidate sensor for the removal and detection of Cd(II).

Ln-MOF-Based Hydrogel Films with Tunable Luminescence and Afterglow Behavior for Visual Detection of Ofloxacin and Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

Highly selective and sensitive quantitative detection of ofloxacin (OFX) at ultralow concentrations in aqueous media and development of new afterglow materials remains a challenge. Herein, a new 2D water-stable lanthanide metal-organic framework (NIIC-2-Tb) is proposed, which exhibits high selectivity towards OFX through the luminescence quenching with the lowest detection limit (1.1 × 10-9 M) reported to date and a fast response within 6 s. In addition, the luminescent detection of OFX by NIIC-2-Tb is not affected by typical components of blood plasma and urine. The excellent sensing effect of NIIC-2-Tb is further utilized to prepare a composite functional sensing carrageenan hydrogel material for the rapid detection of OFX in meat in real time and the first discovery of impressive afterglow in MOF-based hydrogels. This study not only presents novel Ln-MOF materials and Ln-MOF-based hydrogel films for luminescent sensing of OFX, but also demonstrates color-tunable luminescent films with afterglow, which expands the application of composite luminescent materials for detection and anti-counterfeiting.

The Application of Metal-Organic Frameworks in Water Treatment and Their Large-Scale Preparation: A Review

Over the last few decades, there has been a growing discourse surrounding environmental and health issues stemming from drinking water and the discharge of effluents into the environment. The rapid advancement of various sewage treatment methodologies has prompted a thorough exploration of promising materials to capitalize on their benefits. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as porous materials, have garnered considerable attention from researchers in recent years. These materials boast exceptional properties: unparalleled porosity, expansive specific surface areas, unique electronic characteristics including semi-conductivity, and a versatile affinity for organic molecules. These attributes have fueled a spike in research activity. This paper reviews the current MOF-based wastewater removal technologies, including separation, catalysis, and related pollutant monitoring methods, and briefly introduces the basic mechanism of some methods. The scale production problems faced by MOF in water treatment applications are evaluated, and two pioneering methods for MOF mass production are highlighted. In closing, we propose targeted recommendations and future perspectives to navigate the challenges of MOF implementation in water purification, enhancing the efficiency of material synthesis for environmental stewardship.

On-Site Ratiometric Analysis of UO22+ with High Selectivity

Uranyl ions (UO22+) are recognized as important indicators for monitoring sudden nuclear accidents. However, the interferences coexisting in the complicated environmental matrices impart serious constraints on the reliability of current on-site monitoring methods. Herein, a novel ratiometric method for the highly sensitive and selective detection of UO22+ is reported based on a [Eu(diaminoterephthalic acid)] (Eu-DATP) metal-organic framework. Benefiting from the unique chemical structure of Eu-DATP, energy transfer from DATP to UO22+ was enabled, resulting in the up-regulated fluorescence of UO22+ and the simultaneous down-regulated fluorescence of Eu3+. The limit of detection reached as low as 2.7 nM, which was almost 2 orders of magnitude below the restricted limit in drinking water set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (130 nM). The Eu-DATP probe showed excellent specificity to UO22+ over numerous interfering species, as the intrinsic emissions of UO22+ were triggered. This unprecedentedly high selectivity is especially beneficial for monitoring UO22+ in complicated environmental matrices with no need for tedious sample pretreatment, such as filtration and digestion. Then, by facilely equipping a Eu-DATP-based sampler on a drone, remotely controlled sampling and on-site analysis in real water samples were realized. The concentrations of UO22+ were determined to be from 16.5 to 23.5 nM in the river water of the Guangzhou downtown area, which was consistent with the results determined by the gold-standard inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. This study presents a reliable and convenient method for the on-site analysis of UO22+.

Terbium alginate encapsulated CsPbI3@Pb-MOF: a ratiometric fluorescent bead for detection and adsorption of Fe3

Halide perovskite nanocrystals are innovative luminescent materials for fluorescent probes with high quantum yield and narrow emission bandwidth. However, the limited stability, single-signal response, and separation challenges obstruct their widespread use in water ion detection. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on terbium alginate gel beads (green fluorescent, namely Tb-AG) embedded with powdered CsPbI3@Pb-MOF (red fluorescent) was prepared for fluorescent determination and adsorption of Fe3+. Pb-MOF's protection notably enhances the water stability of CsPbI3, while the energy transfer between CsPbI3@Pb-MOF and Tb3+ elevates the optical performance of CsPbI3@Pb-MOF@Tb-AG. Significantly, Fe3+ markedly suppresses CsPbI3@Pb-MOF red fluorescence at 647 nm, while not noticeably affecting Tb-AG green emission at 528 nm. The sensor exhibited a strong linear response to Fe3+ concentrations ranging from 0 to 90 μM, with a detection limit of 0.44 μM and high selectivity. The CsPbI3@Pb-MOF@Tb-AG-based sensor has been effectively validated through its successful use in detecting Fe3+ in tap and river water samples. Furthermore, CsPbI3@Pb-MOF@Tb-AG demonstrates a notable adsorption capacity of 325.4 mg g-1 Fe3+. Finally, the mechanism of Fe3+ detection and adsorption was determined.

Alginate-modified surfactants functionalized metal-organic framework-based fluorescent film sensors for detection and adsorption of volatile aldehydes in water

Volatile aldehydes have an adverse impact on both human health and the environment, therefore, a fast, straightforward, highly accurate detection technique for the simultaneous detection and removal of several aldehydes is eagerly anticipated. Herein, novel APGF@ZIF-8 and APOF@ZIF-8 sensing materials were developed by coating fluorescent alginate-modified surfactants (APGF and APOF) into the ZIF-8 MOFs to produce quite porous fluorescent sensors (SBET up to 1519 m2/g). The detection capacity of the prepared sensors for benzaldehyde, glyoxal, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde has been examined. The detection mechanism was suggested as hydrogen bonding formation between the sensors and volatile aldehydes as confirmed by Gaussian calculations. All the fluorescence spectra of aldehydes display remarkable linear detection relationships in the range of 0.05-200 μM with the limits of detection (LOD) values in the range of 0.001-0.18 μM (0.106-10.44 ppb). These sensors were utilized successfully to detect multiple volatile aldehydes in river water samples with satisfactory recoveries of 96-107 %. Interestingly, fluorescent APGF@ZIF-8/CS and APOF@ZIF-8/CS films as portable disposable removal techniques for benzaldehyde, glyoxal, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde from water were fabricated. APOF@ZIF-8/CS exhibited an excellent formaldehyde adsorption capacity of 58.30 mg/g and an adsorption removal efficiency of 93.5 %. The adsorption process of biosorbent on various aldehydes was fitted by Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The adsorption kinetics followed Pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Recent advancement in nanomaterials for the detection and removal of uranium: A review

Uranyl ions U(VI), are the common by-product of nuclear power plants and anthropogenic activities like mining, excess utilization of fertilizers, oil industries, etc. Its intake into the body causes serious health concerns such as liver toxicity, brain damage, DNA damage and reproductive issues. Therefore, there is urgent need to develop the detection and remediation strategies. Nanomaterials (NMs), due to their unique physiochemical properties including very high specific area, tiny sizes, quantum effects, high chemical reactivity and selectivity have become emerging materials for the detection and remediation of these radioactive wastes. Therefore, the current study aims to provide a holistic view and investigation of these new emerging NMs that are effective for the detection and removal of Uranium including metal nanoparticles, carbon-based NMs, nanosized metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal-organic frameworks, cellulose NMs, metal carbides/nitrides, and carbon dots (CDs). Along with this, the production status, and its contamination data in food, water, and soil samples all across the world are also complied in this work.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based luminescent and electrochemical sensors for food contaminant detection

With the increasing population, food toxicity has become a prevalent concern due to the growing contaminants of food products. Therefore, the need for new materials for toxicant detection and food quality monitoring will always be in demand. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on luminescence and electrochemical sensors with tunable porosity and active surface area are promising materials for food contaminants monitoring. This review summarizes and studies the most recent progress on MOF sensors for detecting food contaminants such as pesticides, antibiotics, toxins, biomolecules, and ionic species. First, with the introduction of MOFs, food contaminants and materials for toxicants detection are discussed. Then the insights into the MOFs as emerging materials for sensing applications with luminescent and electrochemical properties, signal changes, and sensing mechanisms are discussed. Next, recent advances in luminescent and electrochemical MOFs food sensors and their sensitivity, selectivity, and capacities for common food toxicants are summarized. Further, the challenges and outlooks are discussed for providing a new pathway for MOF food contaminant detection tools. Overall, a timely source of information on advanced MOF materials provides materials for next-generation food sensors.

Confinement effect of ionic liquid: Improve of the extraction performance of parent metal organic framework for phthalates

In order to better identify the hazards of pollutants, developing the analytical methods that can sensitively detect and precisely monitor the content of trace pollutants has been the constant pursuit. In this paper, a new solid phase microextraction coating-ionic liquid/metal organic framework (IL/MOF) was obtained through the IL-induced strategy and used for the solid phase microextraction (SPME) process. IL was introduced into metal-organic framework (MOF) cage based on the anion of ionic liquid could interact strongly with the zirconium nodes of UiO-66-NH₂. The introduction of IL not only increased the stability of composite, the hydrophobicity of IL also changed the environment of MOF channel, providing the hydrophobic effect to the targets. The confinement effect of IL effectively improved the extraction performance of parent MOF and the extraction performance of synthesized IL/UiO-66-NH₂ for phthalates (PAEs) were 1.3-3.0 times that of parent UiO-66-NH₂. Thanks to the strong interaction force (hydrogen bonding interaction, π-π stacking, hydrophobic interaction force), the IL/UiO-66-NH₂-coated fiber coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometer showed a wide linear ranges (1-5000 ng L^-1) with good correlation (R², 0.9855-0.9987), lower detection limit (0.2-0.4 ng L^-1) and satisfactory recoveries (95.3-119.3%) for PAEs. This article is dedicated to provide another way to improve the extraction performance of material.
