Assisted wet deposition targeted synthesis of Co-N coordination single-atom catalysts for efficient Fenton-like catalytic degradation of micropollutants

Non-radical activation of low additive periodate by carbon-doped boron nitride for acetaminophen degradation: Significance of high-potential metastable intermediates

Metal-free environmental-friendly and cost-effective catalysts for periodate (PI) activation are crucial to popularize their application for micropollutant removal in water. Herein, we report that carbon-doped boron nitride (C-BN) can efficiently activate PI to degrade acetaminophen under very low oxidant doses (40 μM) and over a relatively wide pH range (3-9). As expected, the significant reduction in periodate addition is likely to be due to the higher chemical utilization efficiency achieved by a non-radical oxidation pathway. This involved two main mechanisms, the electron transfer process mediated by the high-potential metastable C-BN-900-PI* complex and singlet oxygen. In this case, the CO groups and defects on the C-BN surface were identified as key active sites for PI activation. Notably, the prepared C-BN-900 had good cycling performance and the degradation efficiency is recovered after simple annealing. The existence of HCO3- and HA significantly inhibited the reaction, whereas Cl-, SO42-, and NO3- had little effect on the degradation of ACE. Overall, this study provides a new alternative method to regulate the non-radical pathway of boron nitride/periodate system.

Spatial Confinement of Co Nanoparticles in N-Doped Carbon Nanorods for Wastewater Purification via CaSO3 Activation

Spatial confinement of organic pollutants and reactive oxygen species (e.g., SO4•- and •OH) with ultrashort lifetime inside the scale of chemical theoretical diffusion could provide a greatly promising strategy to overcome the limitation of mass transfer in the heterogeneous Fenton-like oxidation process. Herein, we first reported spatial confinement of cobalt nanoparticles in N-doped carbon nanorods (Co-NCNRs), by encapsulating Co nanoparticles into N-doped carbon nanorods, in activating CaSO3 for antibiotic degradation. Compared to Na2SO3 and NaHSO3, CaSO3 could slowly and persistently discharge SO32- due to its low solubility, thus avoiding the depletion of the generated SO3•- and •OH under the high concentration of sulfite ions. Fully physical characterizations confirmed that the 3D hydrogel was mostly transformed into the nanorod structure of Co-NCNRs at 550 °C. Co atoms were successfully nanoconfined into N-doped carbon nanorods, which contributes to mass transfer and prevents the agglomeration of Co nanoparticles, thus enhancing its catalytic activity and stability in activating CaSO3 for water decontamination. The catalytic performance, kinetic research, influences of inorganic anions, pH, and degradation mechanism of chlortetracycline degradation catalyzed by the Co-NCNRs/CaSO3 system have been studied in detail. This work not only proposed a facile method for synthesis of nanoconfined catalyst but also provided an excellent Co-NCNRs/CaSO3 system for wastewater treatment.

A comprehensive review on the boosted effects of anion vacancy in the heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation, part I: Focus on sulfur, nitrogen, carbon, and halogen vacancies

The greenest environmental remediation way is the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. However, limited photocatalytic applications are due to poor sunlight absorption and photogenerated charge carriers' recombination. These limitations can be overcome by introducing anion vacancy (AV) (O, S, N, C, and Halogen) defects in semiconductors that enhance light harvesting, facilitate charge separation, modulate electronic structure, and produce reactive radicals. In continuing part A of this review, in this part, we summarized the recent AVs' research, including S, N, C, and halogen vacancies on the boosted photocatalytic features of semiconductor materials, like metal oxides/sulfides, oxyhalides, and nitrides in detail. Also, we outline the recently developed AV designs for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The AV creating and analysis methods and the recent photocatalytic applications and mechanisms of AV-mediated photocatalysts are reviewed. AV engineering photocatalysts' challenges and development prospects are illustrated to get a promising research direction.
