Abstract
Photopolymerization is becoming increasingly popular in industry due to its copious advantages. The vital factor in the entire pre-polymerization formulation is the presence of photoinitiators. Depending on the application, photoinitiators have different features. Hence, scientists are particularly interested in developing new photoinitiators that can expand the scope of applications and be used to create products with the features demanded by current trends. This brief review summarizes the photoinitiators used in dental materials and hydrogels and those obtained from natural and synthetic sources.

Abstract
Polylactic acid (PLA), a polymer derived from renewable resources, is gaining increasing attention in the development of biomedical devices due to its cost-effectiveness, low immunogenicity, and biodegradability. However, its inherent hydrophobicity remains a problem, leading to poor cell adhesion features. On this basis, the aim of this work was to develop a method for functionalizing the surface of PLA films with a biopolymer, chitosan (CH), which was proved to be a material with intrinsic cell adhesive properties, but whose mechanical properties are insufficient to be used alone. The combination of the two polymers, PLA as a bulk scaffold and CH as a coating, could be a promising combination to develop a scaffold for cell growth. The modification of PLA films involved several steps: aminolysis followed by bromination to graft amino and then bromide groups, poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) grafting by surface-initiated supplemental activator and reducing agent atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-SARA ATRP) and finally the CH grafting. To prove the effective adhesive properties, conjugated and non-conjugated films were tested in vitro as substrates for neuronal cell growth using differentiated neurons from human induced pluripotent stem cells. The results demonstrated enhanced cell growth in the presence of CH.

Release of Bioactive Molecules from Graphene Oxide-Alginate Hybrid Hydrogels: Effect of Crosslinking Method. Mol Vis 2023. Abstract
To investigate the influence of crosslinking methods on the releasing performance of hybrid hydrogels, we synthesized two systems consisting of Graphene oxide (GO) as a functional element and alginate as polymer counterpart by means of ionic gelation (physical method, HA−GOP) and radical polymerization (chemical method, HA−GOC). Formulations were optimized to maximize the GO content (2.0 and 1.15% for HA−GOP and HA−GOC, respectively) and Curcumin (CUR) was loaded as a model drug at 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5% (by weight). The physico-chemical characterization confirmed the homogeneous incorporation of GO within the polymer network and the enhanced thermal stability of hybrid vs. blank hydrogels. The determination of swelling profiles showed a higher swelling degree for HA−GOC and a marked pH responsivity due to the COOH functionalities. Moreover, the application of external voltages modified the water affinity of HA−GOC, while they accelerated the degradation of HA−GOP due to the disruption of the crosslinking points and the partial dissolution of alginate. The evaluation of release profiles, extensively analysed by the application of semi-empirical mathematical models, showed a sustained release from hybrid hydrogels, and the possibility to modulate the releasing amount and rate by electro-stimulation of HA−GOC.
