Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2, has affected hundreds of millions of people globally, resulting in millions of deaths. During this pandemic, children have demonstrated greater resistance than adults, exhibiting lower infection rates, reduced mortality, and milder symptoms. Summarizing the differences in resistance between children and adults during COVID-19 can provide insights into protective mechanisms and potential implications for future treatments. In this review, we focused on summarizing and discussing the mechanisms for better protection of children in COVID-19. These protective mechanisms encompass several factors: the baseline expression of cell surface receptor ACE2 and hydrolase TMPRSS2, the impact of complications on COVID-19, and age-related cytokine profiles. Additionally, differences in local and systemic immune responses between children and adults also contribute significantly, particularly interferon responses, heterologous protection from non-COVID-19 vaccinations, and immune status variations influenced by micronutrient levels. The advantageous protection mechanisms of these children may provide insights into the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Importantly, while age-related metabolic profiles and differential COVID-19 vaccine responses may contribute to protection in children, current comparative research remains limited and requires further investigation.

Abstract
Infections with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and disorders of the heart and blood vessels are causally related. To ascertain the causal relationship between COVID-19 and cardiovascular disease (CVD), we carried out a Mendelian randomization (MR) study through a method known as inverse variance weighting (IVW). When analyzing multiple SNPs, MR can meta-aggregate the effects of multiple loci by using IVW meta-pooling method. The weighted median (WM) is the median of the distribution function obtained by ranking all individual SNP effect values according to their weights. WM yields robust estimates when at least 50% of the information originates from valid instrumental variables (IVs). Directed gene pleiotropy in the included IVs is permitted because MR-Egger does not require a regression straight line through the origin. For MR estimation, IVW, WM and MR-Egger were employed. Sensitivity analysis was conducted using funnel plots, Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept test, MR-PRESSO, and leave-one-out analysis. SNPs related to exposure to COVID-19 and CVD were compiled. CVD for COVID-19 infection, COVID-19 laboratory/self-reported negative, and other very severe respiratory diagnosis and population were randomly assigned using MR. The COVID-19 laboratory/self-reported negative results and other very severe respiratory confirmed cases versus MR analysis of CVD in the population (p > 0.05); COVID-19 infection to CVD (p = 0.033, OR = 1.001, 95%CI: 1.000-1.001); and the MR-Egger results indicated that COVID-19 infection was associated with CVD risk. This MR study provides preliminary evidence for the validity of the causal link between COVID-19 infection and CVD.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the association between the dietary zinc intake and the risk of albuminuria, low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the US general population. This study was a cross-sectional study utilizing the data from the 2003-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Albuminuria was defined as urinary albumin:creatinine ratio (ACR) > 30 mg/g. Low eGFR was defined as an eGFR of less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. CKD is characterized by albuminuria or low eGFR. Multivariate logistic regression analysis, subgroup analyses, interaction tests, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were performed in this study. For 37,195 enrolled participants in this study, the mean dietary zinc intake was 11.85 ± 0.07 mg/day, and the rate of albuminuria, low eGFR, and CKD was 9.37%, 6.68%, and 14.10%, respectively. Participants with a higher dietary zinc intake showed a lower risk of albuminuria, low eGFR, and CKD. In the fully adjusted model, we found that participants in the highest dietary zinc intake quartile had 26% lower odds of the rate of CKD than those in quartile 1. Subgroup analyses showed that dietary zinc intake was positively associated with the risk of low eGFR in participants who were now smokers. The potential nonlinear relationship between dietary zinc intake and the risk of CKD and albuminuria was also revealed. Higher dietary zinc intake was significantly associated with a lower likelihood of CKD, which might be helpful in kidney function protection among the general population.

Abstract
The pandemic has brought attention to the importance of a healthy immune system in preventing infectious diseases. In this in-depth review, the process by which nutritional interventions and fundamental nutrients affect immune function has been discussed with the goal of enhancing the body's natural defenses against viral infections. We explored the complex interplay between diet and immunology, highlighting the essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive substances that are crucial for enhancing immune response. We also investigated the effect of dietary patterns and supplementation methods on immune function. We assessed the effectiveness and potential mechanisms of action of various nutritional therapies in modifying immune responses through a thorough examination of scientific literature. Additionally, we go through the significance of individualized nutrition and highlight possible factors to consider for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and people with chronic conditions. This review attempts to provide a thorough understanding of the role of diet in boosting immunity by synthesizing available research. It also offers insights into practical methods for enhancing the immune function during the current epidemic and in the future.

Abstract
Although there is an increased interest in zinc intake and its role in boosting immunity, to our knowledge, no studies have investigated the relationship between dietary zinc intake and immunity in Saudi adults. This cross-sectional study aimed to measure the extent to which the dietary zinc impacted the immune health of 252 Saudi adults aged 18 years and above. Immune health was assessed using the Immune Status Questionnaire (ISQ), and dietary zinc intake was estimated using an adapted zinc-specific version of the Saudi Food Frequency Questionnaire (SFFQ). Three scores were calculated for use in the statistical analyses (zinc intake score, immune status score, and health status score). A linear regression analysis was used to investigate the association between the dietary zinc intake and immune and health status scores. The means of dietary zinc intake, ISQ, and health status scores were 46.94, 7.10, and 7.84, respectively. We found that a high zinc intake score was directly associated with immune status score (p = 0.006) but was not associated with the health status score. The association remained significant after controlling for socio-demographic factors. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Micronutrients are ions and vitamins humbly required by the human body. They play a main role in several physiological mechanisms and their imbalance is strongly associated with potentially-fatal complications. Micronutrient imbalance is associated with many cardiovascular diseases, such as arrythmias, heart failure, and ischemic heart disease. It has been also observed in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), particularly in most severe patients. The relationship between cardiovascular diseases and COVID-19 is mutual: the latter triggers cardiovascular disease onset and worsening while patients with previous cardiovascular disease may develop a more severe form of COVID-19. In addition to the well-known pathophysiological mechanisms binding COVID-19 and cardiovascular diseases together, increasing importance is being given to the impact of micronutrient alterations, often present during COVID-19 and able to affect the balance responsible for a good functioning of the cardiovascular system. In particular, hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hyponatremia, and hypocalcemia are strongly associated with worse outcome, while vitamin A and D deficiency are associated with thromboembolic events in COVID-19. Thus, considering how frequent the cardiovascular involvement is in patients with COVID-19, and how it majorly affects their prognosis, this manuscript provides a comprehensive review on the role of micronutrient imbalance in the interconnection between COVID-19 and cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Recent research has demonstrated that critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) show significant immune system dysregulation. Due to that, some nutrients that influence immunomodulation have been suggested as a form of treatment against the infection. This review collected the information on the impact of vitamins on the prognosis of COVID-19, with the intention of facilitating treatment and prevention of the disease risk status in patients. The collected information was obtained using the PubMed electronic database by searching for articles that relate COVID-19 and the mechanisms/effects of the nutrients: Proteins, glucose, lipids, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, iron, copper, zinc, and magnesium, including prospective, retrospective, and support articles. The findings reveal an optimal response related mainly to omega-3, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, calcium, and iron that might represent benefits in the treatment of critically ill patients. However, nutrient supplementation should be done with caution due to the limited availability of randomized controlled studies.

Abstract
Zinc is an essential nutrient for human health; it is involved in the catalytic, structural, and regulatory functions of the human cellular system. Different compositions of zinc, as well as its pharmaceutically acceptable salts, are available on the market. Recent studies have demonstrated the role of zinc in combating COVID-19. It has been determined that zinc prevents the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into cells by lowering the expression of ACE-2 receptors and inhibiting the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase of SARS-CoV-2. Zinc also prevents the cytokine storm that takes place after the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into the cell, via its anti-inflammatory activity. The authors believe that no study has yet been published that has reviewed the trends, inventions, and patent literature of zinc compositions to treat/prevent COVID-19. Accordingly, this review has been written in order to fill this gap in the literature. The information about the clinical studies and the published patents/patent applications was retrieved from different databases. This review covers patent literature on zinc compositions up to 31 January 2022. Many important patents/patent applications for zinc-based compositions filed by innovative universities and industries were identified. The patent literature revealed zinc compositions in combination with zinc ionophores, antioxidants, antivirals, antibiotics, hydroxychloroquine, heparin, ivermectin, and copper. Most of these studies were supported by clinical trials. The patent literature supports the potential of zinc and its pharmaceutical compositions as possible treatments for COVID-19. The authors believe that countless zinc-based compositions are still unexplored, and there is an immense opportunity to evaluate a considerable number of the zinc-based compositions for use against COVID-19.

Abstract
Introduction Despite the controversy about the benefits of dietary supplements in treating or preventing COVID-19, their use has increased worldwide even with the introduction of relevant vaccines. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the perception of the Middle Eastern Arab public of dietary supplements as prophylactic or therapeutic agents against COVID-19, and their consumption during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A validated, pilot tested online survey was distributed through social networking platforms in Lebanon, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates. Responses underwent various statistical analyses. Results A total of 2,100 responses were included. Around 44% of participants reported changes in their dietary behavior during COVID-19, and 70% believed that healthy habits may prevent the infection. Moreover, 21% believed that dietary supplements surely protect against COVID-19 and 45% thought they aid in treating it. Users of supplements during the second wave of the pandemic counted for 47%, who declared they were influenced by the media, healthcare providers, or close contacts. Most used supplements included Vitamins C and D and zinc. Only 34% of participants read supplement leaflets. The use of supplements was significantly correlated with being female and exercising, as revealed by the odds ratio and logistic regression analysis. Conclusions In line with other areas of the world, the use of dietary supplements in the Middle East against COVID-19 is not evidence-based. Competent health authorities should play their role in spreading sound awareness among the public regarding this issue.

Abstract
The health risk induced by metal(loid)s in crops are becoming increasingly serious. In this study, eight major vegetables and rhizosphere soils were collected in a peri-urban area with intense electronic information manufacturing activities. The source, distribution and bioaccumulation of six typical metal(loid)s in different vegetable species were analyzed, and exposure risk through vegetable ingestion was estimated. Results showed that vegetables and agricultural soils in the study area suffered from serious metal(loid)s pollution, especially for Cd and Pb. The bioaccumulation capacity differed greatly among individual metal(loid)s and vegetable categories. In general, the highest transfer factors (TF) for Cd, Pb, and As were found in leafy vegetables, while leguminous vegetables had the highest TF of Cu and Zn and root vegetables had the highest TF for Cr. Significant correlations were found between concentrations in vegetables and rhizosphere soils for most metal(loid)s, the exceptions being Pb and Zn. The enrichment of Pb, Cd, Cr and As was mainly attributed to electronic information manufacturing activities, while the enrichment of Zn, Cu and Cd was associated with the application of commercial fertilizers and pesticides. The health risk associated with vegetable intake decreased in the order of leafy > fruit > leguminous > root vegetables. Leafy vegetables were identified as the category with the highest risk, with the mean risk value of 1.26. Cd was the major risk element for leafy vegetables. The non-carcinogenic risks estimated for leguminous and root vegetables were under the acceptable level. In conclusion, special attention should be paid to the health risks of toxic metal(loid)s in leafy vegetables in peri-urban areas with intense electronic information manufacturing activities. In order to minimize health risk, it is necessary to identify low-risk crops based on a comprehensive consideration of the metal(loid)s' pollution characteristics, transfer factors and local people's consumption behaviors.
