Abstract
Breast cancer causes the deaths of approximately 685,000 women annually, posing a severe threat to women's health. Consequently, there is an urgent need for low-cost, low-toxicity and effective therapeutic methods to prevent or mitigate breast cancer progression. PDBP are natural, non-toxic, and affordable substances and have demonstrated excellent anti-breast cancer activities in inhibiting proliferation, migration, and invasion, and promoting apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo, thus effectively preventing or inhibiting breast cancer. However, there are no comprehensive reviews summarizing the effects and mechanisms of PDBP on the treatment of breast cancer. Therefore, this review described the inhibitory effects and mechanisms of active peptides from different plant protein sources on breast cancer. Additionally, we summarized the advantages and preparation methods of plant protein-derived anticancer peptide-encapsulated nanoparticles and their effects in inhibiting breast cancer. This review provides a scientific basis for understanding the anti-breast cancer mechanisms of PDBP and offers guidance for the development of therapeutic adjuvants enriched with these peptides.

Abstract
Rice protein peptides (RPP) are a potentially valuable source of high-quality calcium chelating properties. However, there is a lack of information regarding the calcium-absorption-promoting effect of RPP and its underlying mechanism. The present study adopted molecular docking methodologies to analyze the 10 most potent peptide segments from RPP. Results revealed that the peptide AHVGMSGEEPE (AHV) displayed optimal calcium binding properties (calcium-chelating capacity 55.69 ± 0.66 mg/g). Quantum chemistry analysis revealed that the AHV peptide effectively binds and forms stable complexes with calcium via the carbonyl oxygen atoms in valine at position 3 and the carbonyl of the C-terminal carboxyl group of glutamate at position 11. The spectral analysis results indicated that AHV may bind to calcium through carboxyl oxygen atoms, resulting in a transition from a smooth surface block-like structure to a dense granular structure. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that the 4 mmol/L AHV-Ca chelate (61.75 ± 13.23 μg/well) significantly increases calcium absorption compared to 1 mM CaCl2 (28.57 ± 8.59 μg/well) in the Caco-2 cell monolayer. In terms of mechanisms, the novel peptide-calcium chelate AHV-Ca derived from RPP exerts a cell-level effect by upregulating the expression of TRPV6 calcium-ion-channel-related genes and proteins (TRPV6 and Calbindin-D9k). This study provides a theoretical basis for developing functional foods with the AHV peptide as ingredients to improve calcium absorption.

Abstract
Proteins do not only serve as nutrients to fulfill the demand for food, but also are used as a source of bioactive proteins/polypeptides for regulating physical functions and promoting physical health. Female breast cancer has the highest incidence in the world and is a serious threat to women's health. Bioactive proteins/polypeptides exert strong anti-tumor effects and exhibit inhibition of multiple breast cancer cells. This review discussed the suppressing effects of bioactive proteins/polypeptides on breast cancer in vitro and in vivo, and their mechanisms of migration and invasion inhibition, apoptosis induction, and cell cycle arrest. This may contribute to providing a basis for the development of bioactive proteins/polypeptides for the treatment of breast cancer. Graphical abstract

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with increasing incidence, causes a range of gastrointestinal symptoms and brings distress and impact on the health and lives of patients. The aim of this study was to explore the protective effects of industrially produced rice protein peptides (RPP) on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute colitis in mice and the potential mechanisms. The results showed that RPP treatment alleviated the symptoms of colitis in mice, including weight loss, colon shortening, and injury, decreased the level of disease activity index (DAI), regulated the balance of inflammatory factors and oxidation, activated Kelch-like ECH-associating protein 1 (Keap1)-nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway, regulated the expression of related antioxidant proteases, and promoted the expression of intestinal tight junction proteins. In addition, RPP maintained intestinal mucosal barrier function and alleviated acute colitis caused by DSS treatment in mice by increasing the value of F/B, increasing the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia, and regulating the level of short-chain fatty acids. In conclusion, RPP alleviated colitis symptoms through the Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway and regulating gut microbiota, which had the potential as dietary supplements or functional foods.

Abstract
The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led to the loss of life and has affected the life quality, economy, and lifestyle. The SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro), which hydrolyzes the polyprotein, is an interesting antiviral target to inhibit the spreading mechanism of COVID-19. Through predictive digestion, the peptidomes of the four major proteins in rice bran, albumin, glutelin, globulin, and prolamin, with three protease enzymes (pepsin, trypsin, and chymotrypsin), the putative hydrolyzed peptidome was established and used as the input dataset. Then, the prediction of the antiviral peptides (AVPs) was performed by online bioinformatics tools, i.e., AVPpred, Meta-iAVP, AMPfun, and ENNAVIA programs. The amino acid composition and cytotoxicity of candidate AVPs were analyzed by COPid and ToxinPred, respectively. The ten top-ranked antiviral peptides were selected and docked to the SARS-CoV-2 main protease using GalaxyPepDock. Only the top docking scored candidate (AVP4) was further analyzed by molecular dynamics simulation for one nanosecond. According to the bioinformatic analysis results, the candidate SARS-CoV-2 main protease inhibitory peptides were 7–33 amino acid residues and formed hydrogen bonds at Thr22–24, Glu154, and Thr178 in domain 2 with short bonding distances. In addition, these top-ten candidate bioactive peptides contain hydrophilic amino acid residues and have a positive net charge. We hope that this study will provide a potential starting point for peptide-based therapeutic agents against COVID-19.

Abstract
Pulses and whole grains are considered staple foods that provide a significant amount of calories, fibre and protein, making them key food sources in a nutritionally balanced diet. Additionally, pulses and whole grains contain many bioactive compounds such as dietary fibre, resistant starch, phenolic compounds and mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids that are known to combat chronic disease. Notably, recent research has demonstrated that protein derived from pulse and whole grain sources contains bioactive peptides that also possess disease-fighting properties. Mechanisms of action include inhibition or alteration of enzyme activities, vasodilatation, modulation of lipid metabolism and gut microbiome and oxidative stress reduction. Consumer demand for plant-based proteins has skyrocketed primarily based on the perceived health benefits and lower carbon footprint of consuming foods from plant sources versus animal. Therefore, more research should be invested in discovering the health-promoting effects that pulse and whole grain proteins have to offer.

Abstract
The cationic pentapeptide Glu-Gln-Arg-Pro-Arg (EQRPR) belongs to the family of anti-cancer peptides with significant anti-cancer activity. However, the mechanism by which the peptide performs this activity is unknown. In this study, we explored the pharmaceutical profile of Glu-Gln-Arg-Pro-Arg pentapeptide and revealed its anticancer properties by in silico docking studies. Moreover, the effect of EQRPR behavior of the DPPC membrane was investigated by means of Langmuir monolayer technique and the results were discussed in terms of mutual interactions. To evaluate the binding mechanisms, the pentapeptide and its various D-amino acid substituted analogs were docked to both epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase and proto-oncogene tyrosine-protein kinase, Fyn. Simultaneous binding of the pentapeptides to both EGFR and Fyn proteins, which are receptor- and non-receptor-kinases, respectively, suggest that these peptides can be an effective agent for cancer treatment. Moreover, to show the potential of the investigated pentapeptides to overcome the generated mutation-related drug resistance to EGFR targeted therapies, molecular docking investigations of EQRPR and all its D-analogs were performed against the prospective targets: Wild type EGFRWT and mutant EGFRT790M. Erlotinib and TAK-285 were used as reference molecules. The strong interaction of the peptide with EGFRWT (from -9.24 to -9.75 kcal/mol) and the secondary mutant EGFRT790M (from -9.28 to -9.64 kcal/mol) observed in most cancer recurrence cases indicates its good potential to overcome drug resistance in cancer therapy. In addition, the pharmacological properties of the investigated pentapeptides were revealed by in silico ADME (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion) and toxicity analysis.Communicated by Ramaswamy H.
