Abstract
The aza-Wittig reaction was successfully applied to the synthesis of carboranyl-imines, which are difficult to obtain by classical methods. A variety of functionalized carboranyl Schiff bases was obtained proving the great scope of the methodology. All compounds were fully characterized, including the solid-state structures of six of them. The aza-Wittig reaction was modified to permit the synthesis in one step of carboranyl-benzothiazole and carboranyl-benzoselenazoline derivatives. The stability studies show that the carboranyl-imines and benzothiazole promote deboronation to the nido-derivatives, which is achieved by simple reaction with methanol or protic solvents. The structures of the nido-derivatives were also studied by X-ray diffraction. In contrast, the saturated derivatives, amine and benzoselenazoline, do not promote deboronation and are stable in protic solvents.

Abstract
The high-temperature durability of SiBCN ceramics is significantly influenced by the boron concentration and synthesis methods. Although single-source synthetic routes allow one to obtain homogeneous ceramics at the atomic level, the content of the boron element therein is limited by borane (BH3). In this study, the synthesis of carborane-substituted polyborosilazanes was performed via a simple one-pot reaction of polysilazanes with alkyne bonds on the main chain and decaborododecahydrodiacetonitrile complexes with different molar ratios. This enabled one to vary the boron content from ∼0 to 40.00 wt %. The ceramic yields were in the range of 50.92-90.81 wt %. Independently of the borane concentration, SiBCN ceramics started to crystallize at 1200 °C, and B4C appeared as a new crystalline phase with increasing boron content. The introduction of boron inhibited the crystallization of Si3N4 and increased the crystallization temperature of SiC. The presence of the B4C phase improved both thermal stability and functional properties such as neutron-shielding characteristics of the ceramics. Therefore, this research opens up new prospects for the design of novel polyborosilanzes with great application potential.

Abstract
The effect of substituting o-carborane into the most sterically hindered positions of phenanthrene and benzo(k)tetraphene is reported. Synthesised via a Bull-Hutchings-Quayle benzannulation, the crystal structures of these non-linear acenes exhibited the highest aromatic deformation parameters observed for any reported carborane compound to date, and among the largest carboranyl C-C bond length of all organo-substituted o-carboranes. Photoluminescence studies of these compounds demonstrated efficient intramolecular charge-transfer, leading to aggregation induced emission properties. Additionally, an unusual low-energy excimer was observed for the phenanthryl compound. These are two new members of the family of carborane-functionalised non-linear acenes, notable for their peculiar structures and multi-luminescent properties.

Abstract
o-Carborane, a cluster compound containing boron and adjacent carbon atoms, displays intriguing luminescent properties. Recently, compounds containing o-carborane units were found to show suppressed aggregation-induced quenching and intense solid-state emission; they also show potential for the development of stimuli-responsive luminochromic materials. In this Minireview, we introduce three kinds of fundamental photochemical properties: aggregation-induced emission, twisted intramolecular charge transfer in crystals, and environment-sensitive excimer formation in solids. Based on these properties, several types of luminochromism, such as thermos-, vapo-, and mechanochromism, have been discovered. Based mainly on results from recent studies, we illustrate these mechanisms as well as unique luminescent behaviors of o-carborane derivatives.
