Abstract
A zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8-silica hybrid monolithic column was prepared by one-step sol-gel method. The stationary phase in the monolithic column was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, and zeta potential. The results showed that ZIF-8-silica hybrid monolithic materials had abundant functional groups, good crystallinity, large specific surface area, and good thermal stability. A capillary electrochromatography (CEC) chiral separation system was for the first time constructed with ZIF-8-silica hybrid monolithic column and sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) as a chiral additive and was applied to separate the selected single and mixed chiral compounds (13 natural amino acids and 5 chiral pesticides). Under the optimized CEC conditions, all the single analytes achieved baseline separation with resolution of 2.14-5.94 and selectivity factor of 1.06-1.49 in less than 6 min, and the mixed amino acids with similar properties were also simultaneously enantioseparated (Rs ≥ 1.82). Relative standard deviations (RSDs) of migration time and column efficiency were lower than 4.26% and did not change significantly after 200 runs, evidencing excellent reproducibility and stability. These results demonstrate that the application of SBE-β-CD as a chiral additive for ZIF-8-silica hybrid monolithic columns is a promising method for the separation of chiral compounds.

Abstract
In this research report, the previously developed poly(carboxyethyl acrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) precursor monolith (referred to as carboxy monolith) is further exploited in the preparation of a chiral stationary phase for enantiomeric separations. The carboxy monolith precursor was subjected to post polymerization functionalization (PPF) with the chiral selector (S)-(-)-1-(2-naphthyl) ethylamine (NAS) at room temperature in the presence of N, N´-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) in chloroform. The DCC, which is an organic soluble carbodiimide, permits the linkage for the amine functionality of the chiral ligand NAS to the carboxy group of the monolithic surface forming a stable amide linkage. The NAS column thus obtained allowed not only enantiomeric separations in the RP mode via its chiral site but also the separation of nonpolar species via its achiral functionality offering both hydrophobic and π-π interactions for aromatic compounds such toluene derivatives and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The dual interaction sites (e.g., chiral, and achiral) of the NAS present a convenient column for the separations of slightly polar and nonpolar chiral and achiral solutes in the RP mode.

Abstract
In this study, the molecular imprinting method was used to separate enantiomeric forms of chiral antidepressant drug, R,S-citalopram (R,S-CIT) in aqueous solution by CEC system combining the advantages of capillary electrophoresis (CE) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). For that, an amino acid-based molecularly imprinted monolithic capillary column was designed and used as a stationary phase for selective separation of S-citalopram (S-CIT) for the first time. S-CIT was selectively separated from the aqueous solution containing the other enantiomeric form of R-CIT, which is the same in size and shape as the template molecule. Morphology of the molecularly imprinted (MIP S-CIT) and non-imprinted (NIP S-CIT) monolithic capillary columns was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Imprinting efficiency of MIP S-CIT monolithic capillary column used for selective S-CIT separation was verified by comparing with NIP S-CIT and calculated imprinting factor (I.F:1.81) proved the high selectivity of the MIP S-CIT for S-CIT. Cavities formed for S-CIT form enabled selective (α = 2.08) separation of the target molecule from the other enantiomeric R-CIT form. Separation was achieved in a short period of 10 min, with the electrophoretic mobility of 7.68 × 10-6 m2 /Vs for R,S-CIT at pH 7.0 10 mM PB and 50% ACN ratio. The performance of both MIP S-CIT and NIP S-CIT columns was estimated by repeating the R,S-CIT separations with intra-batch and inter-batch studies for reproducibility of retention times of R,S-CITs. Estimated RSD values that are lower than 2% suggest that the monolithic columns separate R,S-CIT enantiomers without losing separation efficiency.

Abstract
In this study, a novel hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin (HP-γ-CD) functionalized monolithic capillary column was prepared by one-pot sequential strategy and used for chiral separation in capillary electrochromatography for the first time. In one pot, GMA-HP-γ-CD as functional monomer was allowed to be formed via the ring opening reaction between HP-γ-CD and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) catalyzed by 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) and then copolymerized directly with ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) in the presence of porogenic solvents via thermally initiated free radical polymerization. The preparation conditions of monoliths were optimized. Enantiomer separations of six chiral drugs including pindolol, clorprenaline, tulobuterol, clenbuterol, propranolol, and tropicamide were achieved on the monolith. Among them, pindolol, clorprenaline, and tropicamide were baseline separated with resolution values of 1.62, 1.73, and 1.55, respectively. The mechanism of enantiomer separation was discussed by comparison of the HP-γ-CD and HP-β-CD functionalized monoliths.

Abstract
Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) represents a technique with less than 30 years of intense development and in this period this technique has seen huge promise, fast development, stagnation, and significant decline of innovative activity. The major goal of the present overview is not to present an extensive review of the literature on chiral CEC but to analyze the reasons for this dramatic development and attempting to answer questions such as: 1) Was the potential of CEC reasonably evaluated in 1990s before starting the explosive development in this field? 2) Did the development of this technique take the right track? 3) What other developments and competitive trends led to stagnation in the advancement of CEC? 4) Why is the activity in this field currently decreasing? 5) What are the current challenges and promises and what is the future of chiral CEC?

Abstract
In this study, a hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) functionalized monolithic capillary column was prepared by one-pot sequential reaction for the first time. The preparation of the HP-β-CD functionalized monolithic column involves two sequential reactions in one pot: (1) the ring opening reaction between HP-β-CD and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) catalyzed by 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU); (2) the copolymerization of GMA-HP-β-CD, ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS). A series of monolithic columns were successfully prepared by varying the temperature of the ring opening reaction or several copolymerization parameters (the type and composition of porogenic solvents, ratio of GMA-HP-β-CD to EDMA and polymerization temperature). Then, the morphologies and structures of the resulting monolithic stationary phases were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen adsorption analysis. Raman spectroscopy clearly indicated the successful bonding of HP-β-CD onto the monolith. When the prepared chiral stationary phase (CSP) was applied for the separation of a set of racemic compounds by capillary electrochromatography (CEC), including racemic anticholinergic drugs, β-adrenergic drugs, meptazinol and its intermediates, satisfactory separation selectivities were obtained. Additionally, the column also showed excellent separation abilities towards four flavanone glycosides epimers. Furthermore, the prepared monolithic columns exhibited satisfactory stability and reproducibilities of retention time, resolution and column efficiency. These results demonstrated the potential and usefulness of the developed one-pot sequential strategy in the preparation of other derivatized CD functionalized monolithic columns.

Abstract
A chiral capillary monolithic column for enantiomer separation in capillary electrochromatography was prepared by coating cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) on porous glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate monolith in capillary format grafted with chains of [2(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride. The surface modification of the monolith by the photografting of [2(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride monomer as well as the coating conditions of cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) onto the grafted monolithic scaffold were optimized to obtain a stable and reproducible chiral stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography. The effect of organic modifier (acetonitrile) in aqueous mobile phase for the enantiomer separation by capillary electrochromatography was also investigated. Several pairs of enantiomers including acidic, neutral, and basic analytes were tested and most of them were partially or completely resolved under aqueous mobile phases. The prepared monolithic chiral stationary phases exhibited a good stability, repeatability, and column-to-column reproducibility, with relative standard deviations below 11% in the studied electrochromatographic parameters.

Abstract
Understanding the mechanism in chiral transmission from a single molecule to a supramolecular level is fundamentally important to decipher the nonlinear amplification effect in the two-dimensional (2D) chiral assembly process. In this contribution, we report on the dramatically different nonlinear amplification effect in the chiral co-adsorber induced homochiral assemblies constructed by a series of homologous achiral building blocks on the graphite surface under control of the majority-rules principle. Homologous hexagonal networks are formed for 5-(benzyloxy)-isophthalic acid (BIC) derivatives with different alkyl lengths. While globally homochiral monolayers of BIC-C6 or BIC-C16 can be obtained by using a mixture of chiral co-adsorber 2-octanol with a small enantiomeric excess, such majority-rules principle based nonlinear chiral amplification is inoperative for the assembly of BIC-C10. Molecular mechanistic analysis indicates that BIC-C10 assembly can accommodate a chiral mismatched motif to form long-range ordered but short-range disordered crystalline networks, leading to the co-adsorption of enantiomers without enantioselectivity. The present results shed important insights into the significance of chirality mismatch during chiral transmission and benefit the understanding of chiral communication in a surface monolayer.

Abstract
An organic-inorganic hybrid monolithic column was prepared within the confines of a capillary via a single-step in situ sol-gel approach using zirconium tetrabutoxide as a precursor to compose the inorganic backbone and 3-triethoxysilylpropyl carbamoylated derivative of erythromycin (TEOSPC-ERY) as a co-precursor to introduce the organic chiral selector moiety in the zirconia backbone. The resulting carbamoylated ERY-zirconia hybrid monolith (ERY-ZHM) showed homogeneous morphology with well-defined through pores and was tightly connected with the inner wall of the capillary. The column was employed for capillary electrochromatographic enantioseparation of six basic chiral drugs in mobile phases (MPs) consisting of acetonitrile (ACN) and triethylammonium acetate (TEAA) buffer. The effects of composition of MP and applied voltage on chiral separation were investigated by using propranolol as a representative analyte. The highest resolution (Rs=3.33) was obtained with a MP consisting of 10/90 (v/v) ACN/TEAA buffer (10mM, pH 7), 10 kV applied voltage and 25°C capillary temperature. The relative standard deviations for resolution values regarding run to run, day to day, column to column and batch to batch repeatability were 0.41%, 0.89%, 1.80% and 2.26% (for n=3), respectively, indicating satisfactory stability of columns and reproducibility of column preparation process.

The synthesis of macroporous molecularly imprinted monoliths was performed using the monomers system 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and erythromycin as a template. The copolymerization was carried out in situ inside 50 mm × 4.6 mm i.d. stainless-steel tubing. The morphology of the monoliths was examined with scanning electron microscopy. The porous characteristics were determined both from the data of hydrodynamic permeability of monoliths and by means of mercury intrusion porosimetry. The retention parameters of target substance (erythromycin), values of calculated imprinting factors and apparent dynamic dissociation constants were obtained for monoliths prepared with the application of different amount of template (4, 8 and 12 mol%). The separations of the mixtures azithromycin/erythromycin and ciprofloxacin/erythromycin were demonstrated. Additionally, the possibility of erythromycin quantification in human blood plasma was shown.

Abstract
Molecular-level insights into chiral adsorption phenomena are highly relevant within the fields of asymmetric heterogeneous catalysis or chiral separation and may contribute to understand the origins of homochirality in nature. Here, we investigate chiral induction by the "sergeants and soldiers" mechanism for an oligo(phenylene ethynylene) based chiral conformational switch by coadsorbing it with an intrinsically chiral seed on Au(111). Through statistical analysis of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) data, we demonstrate successful chiral induction with a very low concentration of seeding molecules down to 3%. The microscopic mechanism for the observed chiral induction is suggested to involve nucleation of the intrinsically chiral seeds, allowing for effective transfer and amplification of chirality to large numbers of soldier target molecules.

Abstract
A vancomycin-bonded silica monolithic column for capillary electrochromatography (CEC) was prepared by a single-step in situ sol-gel approach. This sol-gel process incorporates a synthetic sol-gel precursor which contains a macrocyclic antibiotic, vancomycin, to form a porous silica network inside a fused-silica capillary. To avoid degradation of vancomycin during the column fabrication, a mild step was adopted into the sol-gel process. The performance of the vancomycin chiral stationary phase was investigated by CEC in both the reversed-phase mode and the normal-phase mode. The vancomycin chiral stationary phase was optimized with respect to vancomycin loading in the reversed-phase mode for chiral separation of thalidomide enantiomers. The best efficiency and resolution values of 94600plates/m and 5.79, respectively, were achieved. The optimized column was further applied to chiral separation of alprenolol enantiomers. A plate height of less than 7μm for the first eluted enantiomer of alprenolol was obtained in an aqueous mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.74mm/s. Using enantiomers of seven β-blockers and some other basic enantiomers as test analytes, separation efficiencies of up to 148100plates/m in the reversed-phase mode and up to 138100plates/m in the normal-phase mode were achieved.

Abstract
Analytical methods for chiral compounds require a separation step prior to mass spectrometric detection. CE can separate enantiomers by the use of a chiral selector and can be hyphenated with MS. The chiral selector can be either embedded inside the capillary (electrochromatography) or added into the background solution (EKC). This review describes the fundamentals and highlights the recent developments (September 2009-May 2013) of chiral CEC and EKC with detection using MS. There were 20 research and more than 30 review papers during this period. The research efforts were driven by fundamental studies, such as the development of novel chiral selectors in electrochromatography and of advanced partial filling techniques in EKC in order to optimise separation. Other developments were in application studies, such as in food analytics and metabolomics.

Abstract
Molecular imprinted polymer is an artificial receptor made by imprinting molecules of a template in a polymer matrix followed by removing the template molecules via thorough washing to give the permanent template grooves. They show favored affinity to the template molecule compared to other molecules, and this property is the basic driving force for such diverse application of this techniques. Such techniques have been increasingly employed in a wide scope of applications such as chromatography, sample pretreatment, purification, catalysts, sensors, and drug delivery, etc., mostly in bioanalytical areas. A major part of them is related to development of new stationary phases and their application in chromatography and sample pretreatment. Embodiments of molecular imprinted polymer materials have been carried out in a variety of forms such as irregularly ground particles, regular spherical particles, nanoparticles, monoliths in a stainless steel or capillary column, open tubular layers in capillaries, surface attached thin layers, membranes, and composites, etc. There have been numerous review articles on molecular imprinted polymer issues. In this special review, the reviews in recent ca. 10 years will be categorized into several subgroups according to specified topics in separation science, and each review in each subgroup will be introduced in the order of date with brief summaries and comments on new developments and different scopes of prospects. Brief summaries of each categories and conclusive future perspectives are also given.

Abstract
The work presented here demonstrates the incorporation of vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium (VBTA) as a novel positively charged achiral co-monomer to a glycidyl methacrylate-beta cyclodextrin (GMA/β-CD) based monolith, providing anion exchange sites with reversed electroosmotic flow (EOF) for capillary electrochromatography (CEC). The monolithic phases, GMA/β-CD-VBTA and GMA/β-CD (without co-monomer) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, pressure drop/flow-rate curves and nitrogen adsorption analysis. After optimizing the stationary phase and mobile phase parameters, chiral separations of 41 pairs of structurally diverse anionic chiral analytes were compared individually using the GMA/β-CD-VBTA and GMA/β-CD monolithic columns. The GMA/β-CD-VBTA monolith chiral stationary phase separated significantly more acidic compounds compared to the GMA/β-CD column. To-date there has been limited work in the development of chiral monolithic column for CEC-mass spectrometry (MS). Because of good electrodriven flow characteristics, which allow the column to maintain a stable current in the absence of outlet vial, GMA/β-CD-VBTA column was successfully coupled to single quadrupole mass spectrometer for CEC-MS of several chiral test compounds. In addition, the same monolithic CEC column when coupled to a triple quadrupole MS instrument, two orders of magnitude higher sensitivity was observed compared to a single quadrupole MS instrument.

Abstract
Since its development in the early 1970s, CEC has been studied quite extensively, but unfortunately its use is still mostly located at an academic level. Reasons for this are the limited availability of commercially available stationary phases (SPs) and columns, along with some practical limitations, such as column fragility, lack of column robustness and reproducibility. Nevertheless, CEC maintains a place among the separation techniques, probably because of its unique feature to combine two separation principles. Also in the field of chiral separations, CEC is often used as a separation technique and already showed its potential for this kind of analyses. This overview will focus on the recent applications, i.e. between 2006 and 2010, in enantioselective analysis by means of CEC. For the selected applications, the used SPs (chiral selectors) and their potential for future method development or screening purposes will be evaluated and critically discussed.
