Abstract
In the present study, we have synthesized an aminobenzoic acid containing Schiff base (compound 1) and its structure was confirmed through single crystal X-ray study. Importantly, the compound 1 crystallizes in the zwitterionic form, with an anionic carboxylate group (-COO-) and a cationic iminium group (-C = NH+-). The compound 1 is highly soluble in water due to its zwitterionic feature in the solid state. Interestingly, compound 1 acts as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for the selective detection of Al3+ ion in aqueous solution without organic cosolvent. It can also detect Al3+ ion by visual colour change to bluish-green fluorescence under 365 nm UV light. The association constant between compound 1 with Al3+ ion was estimated to be 1.67 × 104 M-1. The lowest detection limit for Al3+ ion was calculated to be 7.05 × 10-8 M in water. Compound 1 in combination with Al3+ ion demonstrated fluorescent imaging potential of the nucleus of in RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cell line. In addition, the sensing model is developed as paper based sensor ''Test Kit' 'for its practical applicability.

Abstract
A fluorescent probe (E)-((2,4-dihydroxybenzyl)diazenyl)(pyridin-2-yl)methanone (HL) to effectively and selectively detect Al3+ was designed and synthesized in the experiment. Herein, we explained the excited state dynamics mechanism of HL by using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The potential energy surfaces (PESs) proved that the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process hardly occurs due to the high reaction barriers, so the fluorescence quenching behavior of HL was not based on ESIPT. The frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and spectral properties were analyzed to better understand the origination of fluorescence quenching. It was found that an electron on C = N in HL could be transferred to the fluorophore during excitation in the absence of Al3+, accompanied by the PET process. The excited state could undergo a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process, releasing non-radiative decay. After binding to Al3+, the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process has no longer occurred, and the TICT process is eliminated, resulting in a significant fluorescence enhancement. Therefore, the calculation results well explain the quenching and enhancement behaviors of fluorescence before and after the reaction with Al3+.

Abstract
Encapsulation of fluorophore in metal organic framework (MOF) is an effective method to construct multi-emissive composites. Unfortunately, the small molecules loaded in MOF pores are easy to leak. To overcome this difficulty, fluorescin (FL) is proposed to be encapsulated tightly in the cage of the small tetrahedron of UiO-67, as one of the organic ligands coordinated with the central ion Zr. Finally, stable multi-emission fluorescence was successfully achieved, and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurred between FL and UiO-67. Ascorbic acid (AA) can dynamically quench the fluorescence of FL@UiO-67 nanoclusters (NCs) through internal filtering effect, photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The detection limit of the probe for AA was as low as 0.20 μM, and the detection range was 0.67 μM-0.36 mM. The probe was further employed to detect Al3+ due to the coordination between Al3+ and the carboxyl group in the FL@UiO-67 NCs. The detection limit for Al3+ was 3.3 nM, and the linear range was 11 nM-5 μM agarose film and test paper were both prepared successfully for visual detection of AA and Al3+. This work provides new ideas for low-cost and convenient real-time detection method.

Abstract
Aluminum toxicity in biological systems is a well-known issue yet remains as a prevalent and unsolvable problem due to the lack of proper molecular tools that can detect free aluminum(iii) or Al(iii) ions in vivo. Herein, we report a water-soluble photo-induced electron transfer (PET)-based turn-ON/OFF fluorometric chemosensor for the dual detection of Al(iii) and fluoride ions in aqueous media with a nanomolar (∼1.7 × 10-9 M) and picomolar (∼2 × 10-12 M, lowest ever detection so far) detection limit, respectively. Fluoride ions in sea water could be detected as well as the recognition of non-contamination in drinking water. In addition, using live-cell microscopy, Al(iii) ions were detected in live biological samples in vivo to aid establishing the aluminum-toxicity effect.

Abstract
An efficient fluorescent probe, bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde) oxaloyldihydrazone (1), has been prepared for the selective sensing of Al3+ over other common metal ions in water-containing media. The 1:1 stoichiometry of 1 and Al3+ was determined from Job's plot and Benesti-Hildebrand plot. The binding constant was observed as 1.6×105M-1, and the limit of detection was found to be 0.36μM, which was far below the drinking water restriction of Al3+ by EPA (the maximum allowable value is 7.4μM). In addition, the inherent AIEE features of 1 were observed upon addition of water to DMSO solution due to the restriction of the intramolecular motion, which makes the molecular conformations rigid and planar. Moreover, 1 could act as a novel gelator to form thermo-reversible supramolecular organogel with significant green emission in DMSO-H2O (v/v, 9:1) solution.

Abstract
Rationally designed multiple hydroxyl-group-based chemosensors L1-L4 containing arene-based fluorophores are presented for the selective detection of Al3+ and Ga3+ ions. Changes in the absorption and emission spectra of L1-L4 in ethanol were easily observable upon the addition of Al3+ and Ga3+ ions. Competitive binding studies, detection limits, and binding constants illustrate significant sensing abilities of these chemosensors with L4, showing the best results. The interaction of Al3+/Ga3+ ions with chemosensor L4 was investigated by fluorescence lifetime measurements, whereas Job's plot, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and 1H NMR spectral titrations substantiated the stoichiometry between L4 and Al3+/Ga3+ ions. The solution-generated [L-M3+] species further detected pyrophosphate ion (PPi) by exhibiting emission enhancement and a visible color change. The binding of Al3+/Ga3+ ions with chemosensor L4 was further supported by density functional theory studies. Reversibility for the detection of Al3+/Ga3+ ions was achieved by utilizing a suitable proton source. The multiionic response, reversibility, and optical visualization of the present chemosensors make them ideal for practical applications for real samples, which have been illustrated by paper-strip as well as polystyrene film-based detection.

Abstract
A novel coumarin-derived Schiff base fluorescence probe (CTB) has been successfully designed and synthesized through exploiting tris-(2-aminothyl)-amine moiety as a recognition unit for the highly selective and sensitive detection of Cd2+. It is based on CN isomerization and the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. The investigation into the sensing processes showed that CTB exhibited an excellent selectivity for Cd2+. The sensitivity exceeded that of other competing metal ions, and had a high sensitivity, a detection limit of 1.16 × 10-7 M with the association constants of 1.37 × 1011 M-2. The experiments including Job's plot, UV-Vis titration, 1H NMR titration and ESI-MS spectrum established that the probe CTB binds to Cd2+ in a 1:2 ratio. Further studies also demonstrated that probe CTB can be successfully applied to the fluorescence imaging of Cd2+ in HepG-2 cells.

Abstract
Aluminum is the most abundant metallic element in the Earth's crust and acts as a non-essential element for biological species. The accumulation of excessive amounts of aluminum can be harmful to biological species. Thus, the development of convenient and selective tools for the aluminum detection is necessary. In this work, a highly selective aluminum ion fluorescent probe N'-(2,5-dihydroxybenzylidene)acetohydrazide (Al-II) has been successfully synthesized and systemically characterized. The fluorescence intensity of this probe shows a significant enhancement in the presence of Al3+, which is subject to the strong quench effects caused by Cu2+ and Fe3+. The binding ratio of probe-Al3+ was determined from the Job's plot to be 1:1. Moreover, the probe was demonstrated to be effective for in vivo imaging of the intracellular aluminum ion in both living Drosophila S2 cells and Malpighian tubules.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent chemosensor based on crown ether-acylhydrazone (L) was synthesized and characterized. The sensor L exhibited high selectivity and sensitive recognition towards Al3+ through a significant "turn-on" fluorescence response at 444 nm in methanol solution. While, other competitive ions had no such significant effects on the fluorescence emission. The associated spectra behavior might be attributed to the formation of 2:1 L-Al3+ complex and the proposed binding mode of L-Al3+ was demonstrated by the fluorescence titration profiles, Job's plot, ESI-MS spectrometry, 1H NMR titration and the IR analysis. Besides the high reproducibility of the optical signals, very low detection limit of 0.24 μM was calculated. The association constant (Ks) for L-Al3+ complex was about 5.56 × 109 ± 8.19 × 107 M-2. The results of various experiments showed the sensor L followed a turn-on mechanism via of the suppression of CN isomerization and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process and the activation of chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). Theoretical calculations using DFT/B3LYP method was also used to get insight into the sensing mechanism and electronic structure of L. The sensor L could be conceived as an effective and practical fluorescent chemosensor for determination of Al3+.

Abstract
As an efficient turn-on fluorescent chemosensor for Al3+, a new coumarin derivative (CND) has been designed and synthesized by the condensation of 8-formyl-7-hydroxycoumarin with niacin hydrazide. The spectroscopic studies revealed that the sensor CND exhibited a remarkable fluorescence enhancement towards Al3+ with high selectivity and sensitivity in EtOH-HEPES (95:5, v/v, pH = 7.40), which was attributed to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and CN isomerization mechanism. Fluorescence titration calculations data showed that the detection limit and the association constants of CND for Al3+ were found to be 2.51 × 10-7 M and 9.64 × 104 M-1, respectively. The results of experiments, including Job's plot, 1H NMR titration and ESI-MS, revealed that the stoichiometric binding between CND and Al3+ was 1:1. The investigations of the pH dependency of CND for Al3+ detection, and the cell imaging suggested the sensor CND could be promisingly applied for the recognition of Al3+ in biological cells.

Abstract
Three novel β-pinene-based fluorescent probes 2a–2c were designed and synthesized for the selective detection of Al3+. Probe 2a showed higher fluorescence intensity toward Al3+ than the other two compounds. Probe 2a determined the concentration of Al3+ with a rapid response time (45 s), wide pH range (pH = 1–9), excellent sensitivity (LOD = 8.1 × 10−8 M) and good selectivity. The recognition mechanism of probe 2a toward Al3+ was confirmed by 1H NMR, HRMS and DFT analysis. Probe 2a was successfully used as a signal tool to quantitatively detect Al3+ in food samples and environmental water samples. Furthermore, probe 2a was successfully utilized to label intracellular Al3+, indicating its promising applications in living cells. Probe 2a exhibiting high sensitivity, good selectivity, wide pH range, lower detection limit, and rapid detection for Al3+, probe 2a was applied for the successful detection of Al3+ in water samples, food samples and HeLa cells.![]()
