Synthesis and characterization of peroxo complexes of uranium(VI) with aroylhydrazone ligands

A cradle to cradle approach towards remediation of uranium from water using carbonized arecanut husk fiber

Sustainable materials for remediation of pollutants from water is the need of the hour. In this study two carbonaceous adsorbents prepared through hydrothermal carbonisation and pyrolysis from arecanut husk fiber, an agricultural waste material were used for the adsorption of uranium from water. Batch adsorption data as interpreted using the Langmuir model showed adsorption capacities of 250 mg g^-1 and 200 mg g^-1 respectively at pH 6 for the hydrochar (AHFC) and the pyrochar (AHFT) exceeding that reported for most of the unmodified biochars. The adsorption followed pseudo-second order kinetics and was exothermic in nature. The high selectivity and excellent removal efficiencies on application to environmental ground water samples and good regeneration capacity make these sorbents promising eco-friendly materials for uranium remediation from water.

A pair of carbazate derivatives as novel Schiff base ligands: DFT and POM theory supported spectroscopic and biological evaluation

Schiff bases are mentioned as strongly important molecular scaffolds of industrial and medicinal purposes. Due to wide range applications of carbazate derivatives herein synthesis and characterization of a new Schiff base ligand, (E)-ethyl 2-(4-methoxybenzylidene)hydrazinecarboxylate and 4-(nitrobenzaldehyde)ethylcarbazate are reported. The compound was characterized on the basis of experimental and density functional theory calculations (using the B3LYP and 6-31 G(d,p)formalism combination). Among characterization techniques elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-Vis and NMR spectroscopic evaluations were mainly employed to carry out the formulation of the compound. In addition to computational validation of characterization other significant molecular parameters were also evaluated including geometry optimization, frontier molecular orbital analysis (FMO) and Columbic interaction of different constituent atoms of the title compound. A good agreement has been found between DFT and experimental outcomes confined to prove the structure of the compound. Moreover, molecular docking and antimicrobial studies have proven the Schiff base as an effective bioactive compound.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Synergy in Extraction System Chemistry: Combining Configurational Entropy, Film Bending, and Perturbation of Complexation

Iron-uranium selectivity in liquid-liquid extraction depends not only on the mole fraction of extractants, but also on the nature of the diluent used, even if the diluent has no complexation interaction with the extracted ions. Modeling strong nonlinearity is difficult to parametrize without a large number of parameters, interpreted as "apparent constants". We determine in this paper the synergy curve versus mole fraction of HDEHP-TOPO (di(2-ethylexyl) phosphoric acid/tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide) and compare the free energy of aggregation to the free energy of extraction in various diluents. There is always a concomitant maximum of the two quantities, but with a gradual influence on intensity. The diluent is wetting the chains of the reverse aggregates responsible of the extraction. We show here that the intensity of the unexplained synergy peak is strongly dependent on the "penetrating" or "nonpenetrating" nature of the diluent. This experimental determination allows us to attribute the synergy to a combination of entropic effects favoring extraction, opposed to perturbation of the first coordination sphere by penetration as well as surfactant film bending energy.
