Modelling nematode movement using time-fractional dynamics

Thirty years of slug control using the parasitic nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita and beyond

Several slug species are highly pestiferous and threaten global sustainable agriculture. Current control methods rely heavily on metaldehyde pellets, which are often ineffective, harm nontarget organisms and have been banned in some countries. A viable alternative is the parasitic nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita (and recently P. californica), which has been formulated into a biological control agent (Nemaslug®) to control slugs across northern Europe. Nematodes are mixed with water and applied to soil where they seek out slugs, penetrate behind the mantle and kill them in 4-21 days. Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita has been on the market since 1994 and since then there has been ample research on its use. Here we review the research carried out on P. hermaphrodita over the last 30 years since its development and release as a commercial product. We provide information on life cycle, worldwide distribution, history of commercialisation, gastropod immunity, host range, ecological and environmental factors that affect its success in the field, bacterial relationships, and summarise results of field trials. Finally, we suggest future directions for P. hermaphrodita research (and other Phasmarhabditis species) to enhance its use as a biological control agent to control slugs for the next 30 years. © 2023 The Authors. Ants combine systematic meandering and correlated random walks when searching for unknown resources

Animal search movements are typically assumed to be mostly random walks, although non-random elements may be widespread. We tracked ants (Temnothorax rugatulus) in a large empty arena, resulting in almost 5 km of trajectories. We tested for meandering by comparing the turn autocorrelations for empirical ant tracks and simulated, realistic Correlated Random Walks. We found that 78% of ants show significant negative autocorrelation around 10 mm (3 body lengths). This means that turns in one direction are likely followed by turns in the opposite direction after this distance. This meandering likely makes the search more efficient, as it allows ants to avoid crossing their own paths while staying close to the nest, avoiding return-travel time. Combining systematic search with stochastic elements may make the strategy less vulnerable to directional inaccuracies. This study is the first to find evidence for efficient search by regular meandering in a freely searching animal.

Non-Fickian diffusion of methanol in mesoporous media: Geometrical restrictions or adsorption-induced?

The methanol mass transfer in the mesoporous silica and alumina/zeolite H-ZSM-5 grains has been studied. We demonstrate that the methanol diffusion is characterized as a time-fractional for both solids. Methanol transport occurs in the super-diffusive regime, which is faster comparing to the Fickian diffusion. We show that the fractional exponents defining the regime of transport are different for each porous grain. The difference between the values of the fractional exponents is associated with a difference in the energetic strength of the active sites of the surface of the media of different chemical nature as well as the geometrical restrictions of the porous media. Increasing by six-fold, the pore diameter leads to a 1.1 fold increase of the fractional exponent. Decreasing by three-fold, the methanol desorption energy results into the same increasing the fractional exponent. Our findings support that mainly the adsorption process, which is defined by the energetic disorder of the corresponding surface active sites, is likely to be the driving force of the abnormality of the mass transfer in the porous media. Therefore, the fractional exponent is a fundamental characteristic which is individual for each combination of the porous solid and diffusing species.

Anomalous diffusion in time-fluctuating non-stationary diffusivity landscapes

We investigate the diffusive and ergodic properties of massive and confined particles in a model disordered medium, in which the local diffusivity fluctuates in time while its mean has a power law dependence on the diffusion time.

Movement analyses of wood cricket ( Nemobius sylvestris) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)

Information on the dispersal ability of invertebrate species associated with woodland habitats is severely lacking. Therefore, a study was conducted examining the movement patterns of wood cricket (Nemobius sylvestris) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) on the Isle of Wight, UK. Juvenile (i.e. nymphs) and adult wood crickets were released and observed over time within different ground surface substrates. Their movement paths were recorded and subsequently analysed using random walk models. Nymphs were found to move more slowly than adults did; and, when given a choice, both nymphs and adults showed a preference for moving through or over leaf litter compared to bare soil or grass. A correlated random walk (CRW) model accurately described the movement pattern of adult wood crickets through leaf litter, indicating a level of directional persistence in their movements. The estimated population spread through leaf litter for adults was 17.9 cm min-1. Movements of nymphs through leaf litter could not accurately be described by a random walk model, showing a change in their movement pattern over time from directed to more random movements. The estimated population spread through leaf litter for nymphs was 10.1 cm min-1. The results indicate that wood cricket adults can be considered as more powerful dispersers than nymphs; however, further analysis of how the insects move through natural heterogeneous environments at a range of spatio-temporal scales needs to be performed to provide a complete understanding of the dispersal ability of the species.

Ecology of plant and free-living nematodes in natural and agricultural soil

Nematodes are aquatic organisms that depend on thin water films to live and move within existing pathways of soil pores of 25-100 mum diameter. Soil nematodes can be a tool for testing ecological hypotheses and understanding biological mechanisms in soil because of their central role in the soil food web and linkage to ecological processes. Ecological succession is one of the most tested community ecology concepts, and a variety of nematode community indices have been proposed for purposes of environmental monitoring. In contrast, theories of biogeography, colonization, optimal foraging, and niche partitioning by nematodes are poorly understood. Ecological hypotheses related to strategies of coexistence of nematode species sharing the same resource have potential uses for more effective biological control and use of organic amendments to foster disease suppression. Essential research is needed on nematodes in natural and agricultural soils to synchronize nutrient release and availability relative to plant needs, to test ecological hypotheses, to apply optimal foraging and niche partitioning strategies for more effective biological control, to blend organic amendments to foster disease suppression, to monitor environmental and restoration status, and to develop better predictive models for land-use decisions.

Anomalous diffusion of heterogeneous populations characterized by normal diffusion at the individual level

The characterization of the dispersal of populations of non-identical individuals is relevant to most ecological and epidemiological processes. In practice, the movement is quantified by observing relatively few individuals, and averaging to estimate the rate of dispersal of the population as a whole. Here, we show that this can lead to serious errors in the predicted movement of the population if the individuals disperse at different rates. We develop a stochastic model for the diffusion of heterogeneous populations, inspired by the movement of the parasitic nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita. Direct observations of this nematode in homogeneous and heterogeneous environments reveal a large variation in individual behaviour within the population as reflected initially in the speed of the movement. Further statistical analysis shows that the movement is characterized by temporal correlations and in a heterogeneously structured environment the correlations that occur are of shorter range compared with those in a homogeneous environment. Therefore, by using the first-order correlated random walk techniques, we derive an effective diffusion coefficient for each individual, and show that there is a significant variation in this parameter among the population that follows a gamma distribution. Based on these findings, we build a new dispersal model in which we maintain the classical assumption that individual movement can be described by normal diffusion, but due to the variability in individual dispersal rates, the diffusion coefficient is not constant at the population level and follows a continuous distribution. The conclusions and methodology presented are relevant to any heterogeneous population of individuals with widely different diffusion rates.
