Adherence to the Saudi dietary guidelines and its relation to colorectal polyps: A university hospital-based study

A Systematic Review of the Impact of Dietary and Lifestyle Factors on Colorectal Cancer Prevention in Gulf Cooperation Council Countries

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant health burden in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, necessitating a deeper understanding of modifiable risk factors. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of dietary and lifestyle factors on the prevention of CRC in GCC countries. Studies were identified through electronic searches and reviewed based on relevant keywords. Databases searched included Ovid's MEDLINE, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Web of Science, covering titles and abstracts published between January 1, 2000 and July 25, 2024. The search strategy encompassed four thematic areas: "colorectal cancer," "adults above 18," "risk factors," and "GCC countries." The primary focus was on dietary and lifestyle factors. Two reviewers screened titles and abstracts to determine whether the inclusion criteria were met. A total of 1,883 records were identified across these databases. After removing 513 duplicate records, 1,370 records were screened based on titles and abstracts. Of these, 1,284 records were excluded, leaving 86 full-text articles for assessment. Eight studies were ultimately included in the final systematic review, consisting of seven case-control studies and one cross-sectional study. In GCC countries, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fiber has shown protective effects against CRC, while high red meat and refined carbohydrate intake may increase risk. Regular physical activity reduces CRC risk, though the impact of smoking remains inconclusive. Evidence regarding dairy products is contradictory. There is a shortage of high-quality longitudinal studies, highlighting gaps in current research and underscoring the need for larger studies with consistent methodologies.

The relationship between the high-risk disordered eating and social network navigation among Saudi college females during the COVID pandemic

Background

Disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) are complex health issues that may lead to negative physical and mental health outcomes among college students. More studies should be directed toward the screening of DEBs. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of DEBs among Saudi female university students and their association with social networking site (SNSs) usage and composite lifestyle behaviors during the unprecedented period of COVID-19.

Methods

This cross-sectional study included 445 females recruited using stratified random sampling. The participants self-reported demographic, social, medical, and lifestyle data and completed the validated Arabic version of the Eating Attitudes Test-26, Social Networking Sites (SNSs) Usage Questionnaire, Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, and Body Shape Questionnaire.

Results

The prevalence of DEBs was 27.2% among the female students at Taif University. From the pre-pandemic period until the current time, the DEBs-risk group had a significantly higher SNS navigation rate (36.4%) than the normal group (20.4%) (X ² = 30.015, p = 0.001). The regression analysis revealed that females with a significant body image concern, higher number of SNSs friends, and frequent visits to SNSs, and those seeking social-dependent information in relation to weight loss/dieting were more likely to develop DEBs (Overall Model: Chi-Square X ² = 158.071, p < 0.000^**).

Conclusions

SNSs usage and DEBs were associated during the COVID-pandemic. However, the composite lifestyle score did not demonstrate a significant association with DEBs among the female students at Taif University. Investigating the magnitude of DEBs and understanding the role of SNS are essential for preventing disordered eating among young females.

Dietary Knowledge, Dietary Adherence, and BMI of Lebanese Adolescents and Their Parents

Paediatric obesity is a severe public health problem accompanied by several physical and mental complications, mainly due to an imbalance between energy input and output. Dietary behaviours are influenced by many demographic factors and determinants, such as the place of residence and the level of dietary knowledge of the children and their parents. The aim of the current paper is to assess the levels of dietary knowledge, dietary adherence (in relation to recommendations), and the body mass index (BMI) of Lebanese adolescents in association with demographic variables, their parents’ dietary knowledge and adherence levels, and with other lifestyle behaviours. This cross-sectional study included 1535 Lebanese adolescents aged 15 to 18 years, from 16 public and private high schools located in urban and rural regions, and 317 of their parents. Our results showed that 30.2% of the adolescents were overweight or obese. Participants enrolled in private schools and those living in urban regions had a significantly higher BMI z-score compared to those enrolled in public schools and living in rural regions, respectively. In addition, Lebanese adolescents generally had low levels of dietary knowledge and 32.4% had low levels of dietary adherence. Their dietary adherence was significantly associated with their parents’ dietary adherence. The findings underline the significant role of the parents in shaping their children’s eating behaviours, in addition to the other determinants and factors affecting the diet of Lebanese adolescents. As the prevalence of paediatric overweight and obesity has reached alarming rates, the results of the current study have important implications for both public health policies and obesity prevention interventions in the Middle East and worldwide.
