Abstract
OBJECTIVES A vortex whistle produces a tone which has a frequency proportional to the inlet air flow rate. The objectives of this study were to replicate previous studies demonstrating the use of a vortex whistle as an accurate flow meter, and to assess the degree of relationship between measures of vital capacity (VC) obtained using low-cost methods (vortex whistle and hand-held spirometry) vs. pneumotach-based spirometry. METHODOLOGY A vortex whistle was designed using 3D modeling software and manufactured using a 3D printer with non-toxic, biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA). The digitized vortex whistle tone was analyzed using custom software to produce a frequency vs. time contour. As the frequency is proportional to flow, the integral of this curve corresponds to the overall volume by a linear relationship. The accuracy of vortex whistle volume estimates were assessed using (1) controlled flow rates from a consistent volume calibration syringe, and (2) with 66 subjects between the ages of 18-30 yrs. in comparison to hand-held spirometry and two pneumotach systems. RESULTS Observations from the calibration syringe experiment confirmed that the vortex whistle and software are able to effectively track the flow rate, with a correlation coefficient between the average flow and the average frequency of r2 = 0.9965. Results from the human VC testing showed that measures obtained using both vortex whistles and hand-held spirometry correlated very strongly (r > 0.94) with computerized pneumotach systems, and the strength of correlations obtained via vortex whistles vs. hand-held spirometry were highly comparable. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS When coupled with the analysis software described herein, valid and reliable frequency/flow curves and volume estimates may be obtained using a vortex whistle that are highly comparable to the hand-held spirometer. The use of the vortex whistle has the potential to bring measures of basic respiratory function to clinicians and patients alike at a fraction of the cost of currently used spirometric methods.

Abstract
Phonatory Aerodynamic System (PAS Model 6600) is an evaluation instrument that assesses the effectiveness of surgical interventions, treatments, and therapy for voice disorders. It can be used for the assessment of voice disorders by supporting other perceptual and instrumental methods. It is important to establish normative data, because the use of appropriate norms is necessary for diagnostic and descriptive accuracy. Therefore, this study is aimed primarily at establishing adult normative databases for phonatory aerodynamic measures obtained with the KayPENTAX PAS Model 6600 among healthy adult Turkish speakers and then examining the effect of age, gender, and age-gender interaction variables on these measures. The contribution of the study is considered so important since it will generate normative data for all measurements—except the mean pitch—by the five protocols of PAS for the first time. Two hundred and six healthy Turkish speakers with normal voice (106 women and 100 men) were included in the study and stratified into three age groups. Forty-five phonatory aerodynamic measures across five PAS protocols (vital capacity, maximum sustained phonation, comfortable sustained phonation, variation in sound pressure level, and voicing efficiency) were collected. Age, gender, and age-gender interaction variables were analyzed for 45 PAS parameters. Significant gender and age effect was found for 30 and 19 variables, respectively. Gender-age interaction together was observed for only 6 parameters. Significant differences were not found for the remaining 10 parameters. Significant age and gender effects were observed for 35 phonatory and aerodynamic measures which are essential part of the objective clinical assessment of voice. Consequently, normative data used as reference in voice assessment should be generated according to age and gender differences.

Abstract
Bulbar and respiratory weakness occur commonly in children with Pompe disease and frequently lead to dysarthria. However, changes in vocal quality associated with this motor speech disorder are poorly described. The goal of this study was to characterize the vocal function of children with Pompe disease using auditory-perceptual and physiologic/acoustic methods. High-quality voice recordings were collected from 21 children with Pompe disease. The Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, and Strain (GRBAS) scale was used to assess voice quality and ratings were compared to physiologic/acoustic measurements collected during sustained phonation tasks, reading of a standard passage, and repetition of a short phrase at maximal volume. Based on ratings of grade, dysphonia was present in 90% of participants and was most commonly rated as mild or moderate in severity. Duration of sustained phonation tasks was reduced and shimmer was increased in comparison to published reference values for children without dysphonia. Specific measures of loudness were found to have statistically significant relationships with perceptual ratings of grade, breathiness, asthenia, and strain. Our data suggest that dysphonia is common in children with Pompe disease and primarily reflects impairments in respiratory and laryngeal function; however, the primary cause of dysphonia remains unclear. Future studies should seek to quantify the relative contribution of deficits in individual speech subsystems on voice quality and motor speech performance more broadly.

Abstract
Purpose The goal of this study was to present vocal aerodynamic measurements from pediatric and adult participant pools. There are a number of anatomical changes involving the larynx and vocal folds that occur as children age and become adults. Data were collected using two methods of noninvasive aerodynamic assessment: mechanical interruption and labial interruption. Method A total of 154 participants aged 4-24 years old took part in this study. Ten trials were performed for both methods of airway interruption. To perform mechanical interruption, participants phonated /α/ for 10 s trials while a balloon valve interrupted phonation 5 times. For labial interruption, participants said /pα/ 5 times at comfortable and quiet volumes. Aerodynamic measures included subglottal pressure, phonation threshold pressure, mean airflow, laryngeal resistance, and others. Results One hundred one participants (51 females) successfully completed testing with both methods. Eight out of 20 measurements were found to have a statistically significant effect of participant age on measurements. Sex alone had a significant effect on vocal efficiency for the labial quiet method. Conclusions The data discussed here can be used to view age and sex trends in vocal aerodynamic measurements. When using either method of mechanical or labial interruption, participant age needs to be taken into account to properly interpret several aerodynamic parameters. A participant's sex is not as important when using these methods.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine concurrent validity of the Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, and Strain (GRBAS) and Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) auditory-perceptual scales in children with voice disorders. A secondary purpose was to determine correlation between the GRBAS, CAPE-V, and objective voice measures. Method GRBAS and CAPE-V ratings and acoustic and aerodynamic measures were collected from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Voice and Swallow Outcomes Database. Correlations between CAPE-V and GRBAS ratings were calculated for overall severity of dysphonia, roughness, breathiness, and strain. Correlations between auditory-perceptual voice ratings and objective voice measures were also examined. Results One hundred thirty GRBAS and CAPE-V auditory-perceptual ratings were significantly correlated for overall severity, roughness, breathiness, and strain. r 2 values were highest for overall severity of dysphonia (r 2 = .75) and lowest for strain (r 2 = .54). CAPE-V and GRBAS ratings were largely associated with similar acoustic and aerodynamic measures. The highest correlations were observed for auditory-perceptual ratings of breathiness and jitter% (CAPE-V r 2 = .44, GRBAS r 2 = .44), shimmer% (CAPE-V r 2 = .45, GRBAS r 2 = .45), noise-to-harmonic ratio (CAPE-V r 2 = .42, GRBAS r 2 = .40), fundamental frequency (CAPE-V r 2 = .47, GRBAS r 2 = .44), and maximum phonation time (CAPE-V r 2 = .56, GRBAS r 2 = .51). Akaike information criterion values indicated that CAPE-V ratings were more strongly correlated with objective voice measures than GRBAS ratings. Conclusions CAPE-V and GRBAS scales have concurrent validity in children with voice disorders. CAPE-V ratings are more strongly correlated with acoustic and aerodynamic voice measures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to characterize the acoustic and aerodynamics of the voice of young men with prelingual deafness after cochlear implantation (CI) to provide a theoretical basis for their rehabilitation after CI. METHODS The CI group included 17 young men with prelingual deafness who implanted cochlear at 18-24 years old. The control group included 17 normally hearing young men at the same age. The 10-item Voice Handicap Index, acoustic parameters, and aerodynamic parameters were evaluated. RESULTS For the acoustic parameters, the F0, SDF0, and Jitter of the CI group were higher than those of the Control group, and these differences were statistically significant. Additionally, The difference in mean shimmer and mean NHR values between the CI group and the Control group was not statistically significant For the aerodynamic parameters, the subglottal pressure and aerodynamic power of the CI group were significantly higher than those of the Control group, whereas the MPT was significantly shorter. DISCUSSION Due to excessive stress on the laryngeal muscle and limited pneumo-phono-articulatory coordination, the young men in the CI group had a thin voice and poor voice control and muscle coordination, and they exhibited excessive laryngeal resistance. We propose that after CI, in addition to regular hearing and speech rehabilitation, voice training is also extremely important for prelingually deaf young men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood dysphonia is frequent and has many origins, with the most common initial symptom being the altered vocal quality. OBJECTIVE Describe and correlate the auditory-perceptual and acoustic characteristics of the voice, and the maximum phonation time (MPT), of dysphonic schoolchildren from private and public schools from 4:0 to 7:11 years old, female and male. METHODS MPT, acoustic (Multi-Dimensional Voice Program Advanced and Real Time Spectrogram), and auditory-perceptual (Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice) evaluations of 115 schoolchildren were statistically analyzed. RESULTS Auditory-perceptual parameters values were classified as mild, and MPT values were reduced, in most children. Fundamental frequency and Jitt values decreased significantly with age; MPT/i/ increased significantly with age. Relative average perturbation, voice turbulence index (VTI), and number of sub-harmonic segments values were significantly higher in 4:0 years old children. The number of unvoiced segments was higher in 6:0 years old children. Shimmer percent was higher in 7:0 years old children. There were negative correlations between the high frequency spectrographic tracing color intensity and the vocal strain; the VTI and the MPT; the degree of unvoiced segments and the MPT. There was a positive correlation between the smoothed pitch period perturbation quotient and the roughness. CONCLUSION In dysphonic schoolchildren, auditory-perceptual parameters were moderate, MPT was reduced, several acoustic parameters were altered, and these vocal characteristics improved with age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Phonation threshold pressure (PTP), the minimum subglottal pressure (Ps ) required for phonation, is sensitive to changes in laryngeal biomechanics and is often elevated with pathology. Little is reported on PTP in children; challenges with task performance and measurement reliability represent barriers to routine clinical assessment. STUDY DESIGN Pilot study evaluating PTP and Ps measurement reliability in children using labial and mechanical interruption. METHODS Twenty-two subjects aged 4 to 17 years (10.7 ± 3.9 years) participated. Ten trials were performed for each method; task order was randomized. For labial interruption, subjects produced /pα/ five times at softest (onset PTP) and comfortable amplitude. For mechanical interruption, subjects produced a sustained /α/ while a balloon valve interrupted phonation five times for 250 ms each; mechanical interruption was performed with a mouthpiece and mask. PTP was recorded as the difference between Ps and supraglottal pressure at phonation cessation (offset PTP). Mean PTP and Ps and intrasubject coefficients of variation were compared. Correlations with age were evaluated. RESULTS Mean PTP (P < .001) and Ps (P = .005) were higher for labial interruption. Intrasubject coefficients of variation for PTP (P = .554) and Ps (P = .305) were similar across methods. Coefficient of variation was related to age for mechanical-mask trials only (r = -0.628, P = .00175). CONCLUSIONS Differences in means are likely related to differences in task and PTP hysteresis effect. Reliability is comparable with all methods; using a mouthpiece may be preferable to a mask for mechanical interruption. Measurement of PTP is noninvasive, reliable, and may be a useful adjunct in pediatric voice assessment. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 3b Laryngoscope, 129:1520-1526, 2019.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Normal voice can be differentiated from dysphonic voices by comparing their characteristics using an established normative database. Pediatric normative data using the Phonatory Aerodynamic System (PAS) have been established in a preliminary study for English-speaking children. However, aerodynamic measures, including physical characteristics varying by geographic region, race, and culture, must be investigated between children with different native languages. Aerodynamic analysis of connected speech requires the collection of language-specific samples and the establishment of language-specific norms. Thus, the main purpose of the present study was to establish pediatric normative data using the PAS for a large pediatric population of healthy Turkish-speaking children of 4-17.11 years of age. Another research aim was to determine age-dependent and/or gender-dependent aerodynamic parameters for this pediatric population. METHODS In total, 120 children were divided into four age groups: Group I, 4-5.11 years; Group II, 6-9.11 years; Group III, 10-13.11 years; and Group IV, 14-17.11 years. An equal number of male and female participants were assigned to each group. The PENTAX Medical PAS Model 6600 was used. Descriptive statistics for 56 parameters across six protocols were expressed as mean, standard deviation, and range values. Each protocol was analyzed for age, gender, and age-gender interaction. RESULTS Age was the most predominant factor, affecting 37 of the 56 aerodynamic parameters investigated. Gender and age-gender factors were observed at an equal frequency, each affecting 16 parameters. Pitch-related parameters were the most altered parameters in each protocol. Age-gender interaction was observed in parameters related to the expiratory airflow. CONCLUSIONS This study established the normative values of phonatoary aerodynamics for a large pediatric population with a wide age range and developed a normative database for healthy Turkish-speaking children. This is the first study to investigate running speech protocol in aerodynamic assessment.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to recommend protocols for instrumental assessment of voice production in the areas of laryngeal endoscopic imaging, acoustic analyses, and aerodynamic procedures, which will (a) improve the evidence for voice assessment measures, (b) enable valid comparisons of assessment results within and across clients and facilities, and (c) facilitate the evaluation of treatment efficacy. METHOD Existing evidence was combined with expert consensus in areas with a lack of evidence. In addition, a survey of clinicians and a peer review of an initial version of the protocol via VoiceServe and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Special Interest Group 3 (Voice and Voice Disorders) Community were used to create the recommendations for the final protocols. RESULTS The protocols include recommendations regarding technical specifications for data acquisition, voice and speech tasks, analysis methods, and reporting of results for instrumental evaluation of voice production in the areas of laryngeal endoscopic imaging, acoustics, and aerodynamics. CONCLUSION The recommended protocols for instrumental assessment of voice using laryngeal endoscopic imaging, acoustic, and aerodynamic methods will enable clinicians and researchers to collect a uniform set of valid and reliable measures that can be compared across assessments, clients, and facilities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to characterize changes in the voice and vowel articulation of prelingually deaf children after cochlear implantation. METHODS In this study, the patient group included 30 prelingually deaf children who underwent unilateral cochlear implantation at 4-6 years of age. The control group included normally hearing children of the same age. All deaf children had follow-ups before cochlear implantation and at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after implantation. The acoustic parameters, aerodynamic parameters, and vowel formants were measured in the patient group and compared with those of the control group. RESULTS All acoustic parameters, aerodynamic parameters, and vowel formants differed significantly between normally hearing children and prelingually deaf children. For prelingually deaf children, all of the above parameters gradually decreased after cochlear implantation. Furthermore, the acoustic parameters Jitter and Shimmer were significantly reduced as early as 6 months, whereas the fundamental frequency, the standard deviation of fundamental frequency, estimated subglottal pressure, aF1, iF2, and uF2 were significantly altered 12 months after implantation. However, statistically significant differences in these parameters were not observed between 12 and 24 months after cochlear implantation. CONCLUSION After cochlear implantation, prelingually deaf children established auditory feedback and improved voice control and vowel production.
