Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic respiratory symptoms among toddlers are assumed to be due to allergies and common respiratory infections. Because symptoms and respiratory disease in this age group often continue on to school age and later life, it is important to know the possible risk factors for prevention of the chronic hoarseness. AIM We aimed to determine the current prevalence of hoarseness and other chronic respiratory symptoms among toddlers and young children. Another aim was to examine the risk factors for hoarseness in the building environments of day-care centers (DCC). MATERIAL An electronic symptom survey was sent to all parents of children in day-care centers of a large city in southern Finland. In all, 3721 individuals completed the questionnaire (38%), 53.4% were the parents of boys and 46.6% girls. RESULTS The prevalence of hoarseness was 5.6%. The boy's parents reported hoarseness more often than the girls, but no significant difference was observed. Risk factors for hoarseness in a built environment in this age group were noise, visible dust and dirt, mold and a cellar like odor, a sewer smell, other unpleasant smells, stuffiness of the indoor air, a too high or too low temperatures, a cold floor, insufficient ventilation, the age of the DCC building, and wood as the bearing construction of the building. The lifestyle factors that correlated with the prevalence of hoarseness were the amount of time spent outdoors; however, passive smoking, the number of siblings and pets at home did not correlate with hoarseness. Hoarseness was significantly correlated with other chronic respiratory symptoms such as rhinitis, coughs, eye irritation, tiredness, headaches, and stomach problems and also with the regular or periodic use of medication. Hoarseness was also significantly correlated with asthma and allergic rhinitis and also with repeated infections, such as a common cold, cold with a fever, laryngitis, otitis media and acute bronchitis, but not with tonsillitis or pneumonia. When potential confounders had been controlled for with a logistic regression model, the following risk factors in the built environment remained statistically significant: noise, high room temperature, insufficient ventilation and the stuffiness of the indoor air, a solvent odor, wood as the bearing construction and the age of the building. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that in day-care centers, buildings should be maintained, cleaned and ventilated properly. Concrete and brick used in the construction were protective compared with wood. The acoustic environment should be planned to reduce noise indoors and solvent based chemicals should be avoided. Neither having pets at home or the number of siblings were risk factors, but they were also not found to be protective in this material. All measures that reduce the occurrence of respiratory infections probably also reduce chronic voice problems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Professional operatic singing is vocally demanding, making the maintenance of professional vocal health a paramount concern for the opera chorister. Occupational environment has been shown to affect vocal health for other vocally dependent professions. Hence, the objective of the current study was to explore what occupational environment factors affect the professional vocal health of Swedish opera choristers. METHODS In total, 12 focus group interviews with a total of 47 opera choristers at the three main opera houses in Sweden were conducted. The singers were grouped according to sex and age (≤45 and ≥46 years), discussions were aided by an interview guide. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using systematic text condensation, a thematic qualitative analysis. RESULTS Five main themes were identified: (1) varying vocal demand, (2) adequate recovery, (3) instrument care, (4) psychosocial work environment, and (5) management measures. An underlying core prerequisite emerged highlighting the importance of the opera house management to understand the vocal as well as the psychological and emotional demands of the opera chorister profession. CONCLUSION Our findings support the supposition that occupational environment affects the professional vocal health of opera choristers. We suggest that if management can provide both adequate vocal recovery and succeed in alleviating psychosocial factors, this would improve vocal health and strengthen the singers' ability to handle the intrinsically high occupational demands of the profession. Further research is needed to understand how the findings may be implemented in the work place.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the prevalence, lifetime prevalence of voice disorders, and its association with psychosocial work factors and psychological distress among secondary school teachers. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Secondary data from the CLUSTer study were analyzed, which included sociodemographics, psychosocial work factors (Job Content Questionnaire-22), psychological distress (Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21), and outcome measure of voice (Voice Handicap Index-10). RESULTS A total of 1216 teachers were included in this study. Majority of them were females (81.0%), of Malays ethnicity (63.9%), and were married (83.3%). Almost one-third of the participants experienced high occupational stress. Less than one-third of them were having depression (27.9%) and stress (21.8%). More than half had anxiety (53.9%). The prevalence of voice disorders was 11.2% [95% confidence interval (CI): 8.9, 14.1], and the lifetime prevalence of voice disorders was 52.4% (95% CI: 48.8, 56.0). Participants with depression (aOR = 2.50, 95% CI: 1.48, 4.22), anxiety (aOR = 2.08, 95% CI: 1.05, 4.13), and stress (aOR = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.11, 3.40) were associated with voice disorders. Psychosocial work factors such as occupational stress, supervisor support, and coworker support were not associated with voice disorders. CONCLUSION Psychological distress is associated with the prevalence of voice disorders among secondary school teachers. These findings can be utilized in developing, designing, and implementing interventions or programs to reduce voice disorders for school teachers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Teachers are often considered to be at high risk for voice disorders. Many studies have been conducted globally. However, the risk factors included in these studies varied, and even for the same influencing factors, the results were inconsistent across studies. No uniform conclusions have yet been drawn. The aim of this study is to identify the risk factors of voice disorders in non-university teachers and to provide insights for their prevention, treatment, and mitigation of recurrence. METHODS In this systematic review (PROSPERO/CRD42024554265), PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Wiley were searched up to January 14, 2024. A manual search was performed in gray literature through OpenGrey and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. There was no limitations to the date of publication and language. Studies with a cross-sectional or case-control design and investigating the risk factors of voice disorders in non-university teachers were included. Two researchers performed separately to select articles, extract data, and evaluate the quality of the included studies. The 95% confidence interval and odds ratio were applied to examine the effect size. A meta-analysis was performed with a random effects model using the Stata 16.0 software. RESULTS A total of 23 studies were considered, with a total of 73.609 teachers. The results of this meta-analysis: sex[OR = 1.63, confidence interval (CI) (1.17, 2.28)], smoking[OR = 1.31, CI(1.00,1.72)], upper respiratory tract infections [OR = 2.88, CI(1.59,5.23)], respiratory allergies [OR = 3.02, CI(2.21, 4.10)], endocrine diseases [OR = 2.25, CI(1.52, 3.34)]; acid reflux symptoms [OR = 2.41, CI(1.32, 4.40)], stress [OR = 2.47, CI(1.45, 4.19)], lack of discipline in the classroom [OR = 1.63, CI(1.20,2.20)], physical education [OR = 1.58, CI(1.10, 2.28)], noise in the classroom [OR = 1.89, CI(1.42, 2.53)], excessive speaking [OR = 2.52, CI(1.77, 3.60)], throat clearing [OR = 2.10, CI(1.18, 3.75)], shouting [OR = 1.42, CI(1.02, 1.96)], and speaking loudly [OR = 3.06, CI(1.91, 4.91)] may contribute to the development of voice disorders. Subgroup analyses revealed that the diagnostic tool may contribute to high heterogeneity. CONCLUSIONS The etiopathology of voice disorders in non-university teachers is frequently complex. Multidimensional diagnosis of voice disorders plays an important role in the study of voice disorders It is imperative to undertake early vocal training and implement preventive measures to prevent the currency of voice disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Communication is a key tool in the nursing profession. It is known that listeners are sensitive to the speaker's voice and interpret the speaker's intentions primarily from the non-verbal signal conveyed. AIM To map and discuss the current state of knowledge and research evidence on professional voice use in health and nursing care. DESIGN AND METHOD A scoping review adherent to the EQUATOR guidelines PRISMA-ScR. DATA SOURCES Searches in the EBSCO, CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, PsychInfo and PsycArticles databases were conducted between 1 and 28 February 2023. RESULTS According to the data (n = 23), health professionals use voice as a vital aspect of caring communication and caring relationships, and in leadership as well as inter-professional collaboration, to facilitate information exchange and understanding and promote shared decision-making. The data showed that there is also a rising tendency to explore vocal demands and problems among health professionals. No studies were found on the use of voice in digital health and nursing care services or by social robots. Most of the reviewed studies were cross-sectional, rather small, and focused primarily on the perspectives of healthcare professionals. CONCLUSION The use of voice should be explored as a vital aspect of caring communication and caring relationships from the patients' perspective, and the effects of voice use on listeners' emotions and actions should be examined in different contexts with modern, voice-specific data collection methods. Studies focusing on voice use in digital health care and by social robots are also needed. By integrating training programmes, education and technological innovations, health care can leverage the full potential of voice-based communication to promote a more coordinated and patient-centred care environment, true inter-professional collaboration and effective leadership. IMPACT Professional voice use is an essential part of all health and nursing care and an impressive method that should be used consciously. Therefore, the meaning and methods of voice use, including speech accommodation, should be systematically introduced into health and nursing care and included in nursing education.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Less attention has been paid to the interaction between voice disorders, stress, and indoor environmental quality for work ability in teachers. Therefore, our aim was to study whether lower work ability associated more strongly when the variables of voice disorders and stress at work were combined as opposed to evaluating these two factors separately. METHODS We conducted a questionnaire study including validated self-assessment of work ability and a technical assessment of school buildings utilizing a sample of 1198 and a subsample (n = 538) of Finnish teachers. RESULTS When combined, voice disorders and stress at work had a stronger association to decreased work ability than when they were evaluated separately. The occurrence of stress was more prevalent in poor and moderate work ability than the occurrence of voice disorders. Nine out of 10 of the teachers who had neither voice disorders nor stress reported good work ability, while four out of 10 of the teachers who suffered from both voice disorders and stress had poor work ability. As regards the background variables, nearly half of the subjects working in the non-problem buildings have neither stress nor voice disorders. DISCUSSION We recommend offering support for reducing stress at work to improve teachers' work performance. The findings also support the maintenance of school buildings and keeping them in good condition. Follow-up studies are needed to investigate the possible effects of voice disorders and the associated variables on work ability.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hoarseness and other voice problems are common in occupations where the person has to speak, sing or shout in a work environment containing dust, noise, gaseous or particulate irritants. In recent years, stress has often been associated with voice problems. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine trends over a period of time of the prevalence of voice problems and reported stress in Finnish school buildings. STUDY DESIGN School buildings from different parts of the country were studied for ten years using a similar questionnaire (N = 1721). Five schools participated before and after the remediation of an indoor air problem in the school buildings (n = 315). RESULTS In the pilot study (2007-2008), the reported work-related stress was on a very low level (3%) and the prevalence of hoarseness was 10%. After the economic crisis in 2008, the stress was observed to have increased. During the follow-up (2008-2017), the reported stress had continued to increase and in the latest surveys it was 21% and the prevalence of hoarseness 34%. Indoor air factors correlated significantly with hoarseness even when controlling for age, gender, owning pets and job satisfaction in a logistic regression model. In the school buildings where the remediation of the building was completed, the prevalence of hoarseness decreased but the level of stress increased. In general, the proportion of respondents reporting stress was lower than the proportion of respondents with hoarseness. Additionally, the reported stress also correlated with factors other than health in the education branch, especially economic resources and major changes in the core curriculum. CONCLUSION Hoarseness and work-related stress have, to a large extent, different risk factors. Over time, the proportion of individuals with stress has been at a lower level than the proportion of respondents with voice problems; hence, we conclude that it is quite unlikely that stress would be a causative risk factor for hoarseness. We recommend that irritant dust and gases should be reduced from the work environment of teachers to enable recovery from hoarseness and other voice problems. Coping with work-related stress should be alleviated with other measures.

Abstract
Background Voice disorders (VD) pose significant challenges for teachers as they impact their professional and personal lives. Teaching requires extensive use of the voice, making teachers particularly susceptible to vocal health issues. VD can hinder the quality of education. Objectives This study aimed to comprehensively explore the prevalence, associated factors, and impact of VD among teachers and their health-seeking behavior regarding VD. Methodology A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in Taif City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), between November and December 2023. The data were collected through a questionnaire covering demographic variables, occupational factors, voice-related symptoms, associated health conditions, and the impact of VD. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics version 26 (IBM Corp. Released 2019. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.), and chi-squared tests were used to assess associations. Results The study involved 568 teachers, 61.8% of whom had VD. The study identified significant associations between VD and demographic characteristics, habits, and teaching-related variables. Age, gender, teaching subject, class size, and weekly teaching load were associated with the prevalence of VD. Hoarseness, throat pain, and throat dryness were prevalent symptoms among teachers with VD. The impact of VD on teachers was evident, with a considerable proportion reporting work absenteeism (28.7%) and even contemplating retirement due to voice problems (6.3%). Conclusion This study offers a nuanced understanding of VD among teachers in the Taif region, emphasizing the complex interplay of demographic, symptomatic, and behavioral factors. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions, including awareness campaigns, preventive strategies, and streamlined healthcare access, to address the unique challenges that different subgroups of teachers face. Future research should further explore longitudinal trajectories and objective measures to enhance our understanding of VD in educational settings.

METHODS We performed a questionnaire study of 538 Finnish teachers working in 67 school buildings utilizing both perceived and technical evaluations; the agreement between these two assessments was also studied. The technical assessment was provided by technical experts. RESULTS Teachers with voice disorders reported significantly more complaints from indoor air than those without voice disorders. The results also indicated a possible connection between the technical assessment and voice disorders. After adjustment for sex, stress and asthma, the prevalence of voice disorders was 47% higher in teachers working in renovated buildings compared to those working in the non-problem buildings (aRR1.47; CI 95% 1.11-1.95). The prevalence of voice disorders was 28% higher among teachers working in buildings with problems compared to those working in non-problem buildings (aRR 1.28; 95% CI 0.99-1.64). DISCUSSION In our study, poor perceived indoor air was significantly associated with self-reported voice disorders in teachers and there was an agreement between the perceived and technical assessments. Our results also indicated a possible connection between the technical assessment and voice disorders. Our results imply the need for longitudinal research with technical assessment to study the effect of renovation on voice disorders.

Abstract
Purpose The current study examined the effect of stress of COVID-19 on work-family conflict, how perceived work ability may mediate this effect, and lastly how perceived social support may moderate the various indirect pathway during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A total of 2558 Chinese adults were recruited from the first author's university completed the questionnaire including stress of COVID-19 scale, work-family conflict, perceived social support and perceived work ability scale. Results The present study showed that stress of COVID-19 was positively associated with work-family conflict while negatively associated with perceived work ability, which in turn, was negatively associated with work-family conflict. Perceived social support magnified the effects of perceived work ability on work-family conflict. Conclusion Findings of this study shed light on a correlation between stress of COVID-19 and work-family conflict. Moreover, this study emphasizes the value of intervening individuals' perceived work ability and increasing the ability of perceived social support in the context of COVID-19.

Abstract
PURPOSE Police officers have many work-related risks. In Finland, hoarseness and other respiratory symptoms and related risk factors have not been investigated on a national level. In many of the work tasks carried out by the police, an excellent physical and mental condition is essential. METHOD Our aim was to determine the prevalence of hoarseness and related respiratory symptoms and to investigate eventual occupational risk factors associated with hoarseness. We also compared different work tasks and remediation procedures in three police stations with indoor air problems. MATERIAL In all, 767 persons completed a nation-wide e-mail survey. The study population is approximately 11% of the total police force in Finland. Half of the study population were men. In three cities, we evaluated the outcome of different type of remediation methods after the moisture damaged buildings were renovated. The prevalence of hoarseness was compared in different work tasks and the risk associated with indoor air, work-related stress, and background factors were estimated. Information on the remediation was obtained from the employer. RESULTS Altogether, 30.5% of the respondents had hoarseness and 15.5% had work-related stress. Almost 9% were smokers and 43% had pets at home. Of all the respondents, 13% had asthma. Hoarseness was not related to work-related stress. The strongest risk factors for hoarseness were asthma and exposure to mold odor, dusts and cold temperatures after adjusting for age, gender, smoking and pet-owning. When three renovation techniques were compared, the best results were found in the building with a thorough remediation and the removal of mold from the building. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that the exposure to irritant gases, fumes, and bioaerosols should be minimized whenever possible in order to avoid incident asthma and voice problems.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate time trends in the prevalence of hoarseness among health care professionals in primary health care units (PHC) and in hospitals from 2007 to 2018. Moreover, purpose was to discover potential indoor environmental quality (IEQ) risk factors as well as to determine the effect of the remediation of the indoor air problems on the prevalence of hoarseness. METHODS The health status was collected from all employees in these units/hospitals (N = 1564/1199) with questionnaires and the follow-ups were carried out as an open cohort. Based on building condition inspections, buildings were classified to be an "exposed" or "reference" buildings by third-party experts. The before and after remediation results were compared to reference buildings. RESULTS During follow-up, hoarseness has not increased in those PHC units with good IEQ. In the pilot study, the prevalence of hoarseness in non-exposed reference building was 5.9%, and it stayed approximately at the same level throughout the follow-up. Whereas in buildings with an IEQ problem the prevalence of hoarseness varied between 16.2 and 36.1% and it decreased to 11.4% after the remediations. In a large hospital with severe IEQ problems, the prevalence of hoarseness was 39.1%, and in hospital buildings with a milder exposure 23.3%. The most important risk factors for hoarseness were asthma, allergic rhinitis and IEQ problems. CONCLUSION A good indoor environment and the remediation of damaged buildings seem to promote a better condition of the voice in health care workers.

Abstract
Objective Teachers have an increased prevalence of voice disorders. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of remote teaching on perceived voice fatigue among Italian teachers of all grades during the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Method s The participants were 195 female teachers (Mage=48.77; SDage=9.61) in primary, secondary, and high schools. They completed the Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI) through an online survey. The tool includes 19 items grouped into three dimensions: tiredness of voice and avoidance of voice use (TA); physical discomfort (PD); and improvement of symptoms with rest (IS). The participants reported their perceived voice fatigue during remote teaching. They were also asked to provide data about voice fatigue as perceived in previous classroom teaching. The data were analyzed through two sets of independent one-way ANOVAs, with voice fatigue subscales as criterion variables and school grade as a between-subjects factor. Results The teachers involved in the study reported higher voice fatigue scores than vocally healthy adults from the general population. Primary school teachers showed higher voice fatigue during remote teaching than both secondary and high school teachers, specifically for the TA and PD dimensions, whereas no difference emerged for IS. The VFI scores of primary school teachers were similar to those of dysphonic individuals. Conclusion The results of the study confirm that primary school teachers are more vulnerable to developing voice disorders and suggest the need for specific vocal health interventions in case of prolonged remote work.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence and risk factors in public kindergarten and elementary school teachers in the Jimei district in Xiamen. We took particular interest in the relationship between work-related factors and voice disorders. Study Design A cross-sectional investigation; a General Investigation. Methods This study was conducted from September 14 to 18, 2020 at public kindergarten and elementary schools in Xiamen, China. A total of 3140 teachers were separated into a perceived voice disorder group (PVD) and no perceived voice disorder group (NPVD) according to the Voice Handicap Index. The chi-square test was applied to explore the differences between the PVD and NPVD groups. The univariate logistic regression models were used to identify the risk factors in terms of unadjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval. Stepwise logistic regression was then used to ascertain independent determinants. Results We found that the prevalence of PVD was 47.52%. The results showed that risk factors of PVD included being female (OR = 1.574), middle-rank technical title and higher (OR = 2.199), continuous lecturing for more than 3 classes (OR = 3.034), lectured more than 10 classes a week (OR = 1.436) and taught art or physical education (OR = 1.742). Conclusions Teachers' work-related characteristics were associated with PVD. This proves that a preventive voice care program for teachers, administered by the school or education bureau, is urgent. This could include components such as the reasonable arrangement of timetables and recruitment of a sufficient number of kindergarten and elementary school teachers.Level of evidence: Case-series.

Abstract
PURPOSE Due to the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), teachers during the pandemic have had to adapt to online teaching at short notice. This study aims to investigate the voice symptoms and their environmental risk factors as well as the work ability associated with distance teaching and to compare these with symptoms in previous contact teaching. METHODS We conducted a survey of 121 primary and secondary school teachers across Finland. The survey was advertised online through social media and the replies collected from voluntarily participating teachers. RESULTS During distance teaching vocal symptoms appeared less often than in school with 71% teachers experiencing them in regular teaching and 44% in distance teaching, VHI result decreased from 7.88 in school teaching to 4.58 in distance teaching. Acoustic conditions were reported to be more suitable in distance teaching with 73% of teachers finding them adequate during distance teaching in comparison to 46% for those in regular teaching. Background noise was the most disturbing factor for a teacher's voice in the classroom and in distance teaching and this was even more conspicuous in the classroom. Also, subjectively experienced poor indoor air quality at school influenced the voice negatively. Further, voice problems were associated with increased subjective stress levels and reduced ability to work. CONCLUSION Distance teaching has affected teachers' voices in a positive way compared with regular teaching. This difference is likely to be due to better acoustics and indoor air quality in distance teaching conditions.
