Abstract
INTRODUCTION The inflammatory process in Crohn's disease (CD) is closely associated with the formation of reactive oxygen species. Antioxidant enzymes can play an important role in the outcome of CD and may influence postoperative recurrence in these patients. The aim of our study was to evaluate gene expression of intracellular antioxidant enzymes in surgically resected intestinal specimens of patients with CD, both in macroscopically normal and in inflamed tissue. METHODS A total of 28 patients referred for elective bowel resection were enrolled in the study. Full-thickness small intestinal specimens were investigated. Gene expression of antioxidant enzymes - superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GSR) - was evaluated both in macroscopically normal and inflamed samples. RESULTS There were significantly lower levels of SOD1 mRNA (p = 0.007) and GSR mRNA (p = 0.027) in inflamed tissue compared to macroscopically normal areas. No significant differences were found between affected and non-affected intestinal segments in mRNA for SOD2, SOD3 and GPX. CONCLUSIONS Our pilot data clearly showed that the gene expression of major antioxidant enzymes is not a uniform mechanism in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease. Topically decreased gene expression of SOD1 and GSR might facilitate the segmental tissue injury caused by reactive oxygen species.

Abstract
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease of the centrofacial region. However, the association between rosacea and smoking remains controversial. To evaluate the association between rosacea and smoking, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis. A comprehensive systematic search of literature published before October 15, 2020 on online databases (including Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase) was performed. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) were calculated. 12 articles were included, covering 80 156 controls and 54 132 patients with rosacea. Tobacco consumption was not found to increase the risk of rosacea. However, using subtype analysis (involving 5 articles), we found there was a decreased risk of rosacea in current smokers but an increased risk in ex-smokers. In addition, smoking appears to increase the risk of papulopustular rosacea and phymatous rosacea. Analysis of all included studies also showed that ex-smoking was associated with an increased risk, while current smoking was associated with a reduced risk of rosacea. In order to prevent many diseases, including rosacea, the public should be encouraged to avoid smoking.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), most commonly known as Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative disease (UC), is a chronic and relapsing intestinal disease which cannot be cured completely. The prevalence of IBD in Europe and in North America has increased over the past 20 years. As most IBD patients are young at onset, their quality of life (QOL) can be influenced to varying degrees. Thus, current treatment goals are typically focused on preventing complications, including maintaining clinical remission and improving the QOL. Adjuvant therapies have been widely concerned as an effective treatment in alleviating IBD symptoms, including dietary intervention, traditional Chinese medicine, smoking, alcohol, and physical activities. This review focuses on different ancillary therapies for IBD treatments, in particular the mechanism of reducing inflammation based on the actual data from research studies. Moreover, comparing the latest data, this review also presented potential future prospect for adjuvant therapies.
