Abstract
Grass carp swim bladder collagen peptides (GCPs) were purified by ultrafiltration and Sephadex G-15 chromatography to obtain GCP-II, which exhibited superior antioxidant activity. GCP-II exhibited 78.22% ABTS+ scavenging activity and 72.91% Fe2⁺ chelating activity, along with around 90% thermal stability between 4 °C and 100 °C. Environmental factors such as 4% NaCl reduced superoxide scavenging to 59.16% of the original and 0.2% citric acid reduced it to 71.57% of the original, while glucose showed minimal impact on the antioxidant activity of GCP-II. From 464 GCP-II sequences analyzed via LC-MS/MS, 7 bioactive peptides were selected based on antioxidant activity and functional sequence motifs, and were named peptides 1 to 7, respectively. These peptides were synthesized through solid-phase methods, validated for purity exceeding 95% using HPLC and mass spectrometry, and tested for antioxidant performance. Peptides 1, 3, 6, and 7 demonstrated notable antioxidant efficacy: peptide 6 showed 63.31% ABTS+ scavenging activity at 1 mg/mL, while peptides 3 and 6 exhibited synergistic effects in DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging experiments, surpassing theoretical values by 0.88% and 2.16%, respectively. This study underscores the potential of synthetic GCPs and GCP-II-derived peptides as functional antioxidants, particularly peptide 3 and peptide 6.

Abstract
The antioxidant capacity and protective effect of peptides from protein hydrolysate of Cordyceps militaris cultivated with tussah pupa (ECPs) on H2O2-injured HepG2 cells were studied. Results indicated ECP1 (<3 kDa) presented the strongest antioxidant activity compared with other molecular weight peptides. Pretreated with ECPs observably enhanced survival rates and reduced apoptosis rates of HepG2 cells. ECPs treatment decreased the ROS level, MDA content and increased CAT and GSH-Px activities of HepG2 cells. Besides, the morphologies of natural peptides from C. militaris cultivated with tussah pupa (NCP1) and ECP1 were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Characterization results suggested the structure of NCP1 was changed by enzymatic hydrolysis treatment. Most of hydrophobic and acidic amino acids contents (ACC) in ECP1 were also observably improved by enzymatic hydrolysis. In conclusion, low molecular weight peptides had potential value in the development of cosmetics and health food.

Abstract
Faba bean flour, after in vitro gastrointestinal digestion, showed important antioxidant and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities. In the present study, 11 faba bean- derived peptides were synthesized to confirm their bioactivities and provide a deeper understanding of their mechanisms of action. The results revealed that 7 peptides were potent antioxidants, namely, NYDEGSEPR, TETWNPNHPEL, TETWNPNHPE, VIPTEPPH, VIPTEPPHA, VVIPTEPPHA, and VVIPTEPPH. Among them, TETWNPNHPEL had the highest activity in the ABTS (EC50 = 0.5 ± 0.2 mM) and DPPH (EC50 = 2.1 ± 0.1 mM) assays (p < 0.05), whereas TETWNPNHPE had the highest activity (p < 0.05) in the ORAC assay (2.84 ± 0.08 mM Trolox equivalent/mM). Synergistic and/or additive effects were found when selected peptides (TETWNPNHPEL, NYDEGSEPR, and VVIPTEPPHA) were combined. Four peptides were potent ACE inhibitors, where VVIPTEPPH (IC50 = 43 ± 1 μM) and VVIPTEPPHA (IC50 = 50 ± 5 μM) had the highest activity (p < 0.05), followed by VIPTEPPH (IC50 = 90 ± 10 μM) and then VIPTEPPHA (IC50 = 123 ± 5 μM) (p < 0.05). These peptides were noncompetitive inhibitors, as supported by kinetic studies and a molecular docking investigation. This study demonstrated that peptides derived from faba beans have multifunctional bioactivities, making them a promising food-functional and nutraceutical ingredient.

Abstract
In recent years, numerous reports have described bioactive peptides (biopeptides)/hydrolysates produced from various food sources. Biopeptides are considered interesting for industrial application since they show numerous functional properties (e.g., anti-aging, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties) and technological properties (e.g., solubility, emulsifying, and foaming). Moreover, they have fewer side effects than synthetic drugs. Nevertheless, some challenges must be overcome before their administration via the oral route. The gastric, pancreatic, and small intestinal enzymes and acidic stomach conditions can affect their bioavailability and the levels that can reach the site of action. Some delivery systems have been studied to avoid these problems (e.g., microemulsions, liposomes, solid lipid particles). This paper summarizes the results of studies conducted on biopeptides isolated from plants, marine organisms, animals, and biowaste by-products, discusses their potential application in the nutricosmetic industry, and considers potential delivery systems that could maintain their bioactivity. Our results show that food peptides are environmentally sustainable products that can be used as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory agents in nutricosmetic formulations. Biopeptide production from biowaste requires expertise in analytical procedures and good manufacturing practice. It is hoped that new analytical procedures can be developed to simplify large-scale production and that the authorities adopt and regulate use of appropriate testing standards to guarantee the population's safety.

Abstract
Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) is one of the three most cultivated freshwater fish around the world, but it is mainly consumed afresh, so only a small part of them are processed into salted fish or snack food. This research was performed to prepare and screen antioxidant peptides from grass carp muscle to promote its high‐value utilization. The parameters of double‐enzyme two‐step hydrolysis were optimized, the peptides with the highest ABTS.+ scavenging ability were enriched and identified by Sephadex G‐25 and LC‐Q‐Orbitrap‐MS/MS. The synergistic–antagonistic effect among identified peptides was also investigated. The optimized conditions were hydrolyzed with protamex (10,000 U/g) at pH 8.0, 50°C for 3 h, followed by hydrolysis with alcalase (6,000 U/g) at pH 9.0, 50 °C for 2 h, and the protein–liquid ratio was 4%. The hydrolysates were further fractionated to obtain five fractions, in which fraction 3 (F3) exhibited the strongest ABTS.+ and O2·‐ scavenging ability with the IC50 values of 0.11 and 0.47 mg/ml, respectively. Twelve novel antioxidant peptides were identified, in which VAGW possessed the highest activity (139.77 μmol GSH/g). Significantly synergistic effects were observed on the two and three peptides’ combination among VAGW, APPAMW, LFGY, FYYGK, and LLLYK, while the C‐terminal tryptophan (Trp) played an important role in the synergism. This study found that grass carp muscle hydrolysates can be potential natural antioxidants in functional products. The synergistic effects among peptides may provide a perspective for the combined application of peptides.

Abstract
The protective effect of antioxidant peptides from grass carp scale gelatin on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-mediated oxidative injured HepG2 cells was investigated, and the protective mechanism as well as peptide structure were studied. Pretreated with grass carp scale gelatin hydrolysates (GSGH) for 24 h significantly increased the survival rates and decreased the apoptosis rates of H2O2-mediated oxidative injured HepG2 cells. The increase in SOD, CAT and GPX activities, reduce in ROS level and MDA content, and weaken in damage on cell membrane and DNA could be responsible for the protective effect of GSGH on H2O2-mediated oxidative injured HepG2 cells. Peptide sequences of GSGH were analyzed by LC-ESI-Q-Orbitrap-MS/MS, and results showed that most of them were low molecular weight peptide at 358-986 Da. Synergistic effect existed among antioxidant peptides and contributed to the strong antioxidant activities of GSGH.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the protective effects of a peptide (YGDEY, Tyr-Gly-Asp-Glu-Tyr) isolated from tilapia skin gelatin hydrolysates (TGHs), against UVB-induced photoaging in human keratinocytes (HaCaT) cells. Results showed that YGDEY significantly decreased levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), increased antioxidant factors (Superoxide Dismutase, SOD and Glutathione, GSH) expression and maintained balance between GSH and GSSG in HaCaT cells. Comet assay shows that YGDEY can protect DNA from oxidative damage. Furthermore, it significantly inhibited MMP-1 (collagenase) and MMP-9 (gelatinase) expression and increased Type I procollagen production. In addition, the molecular docking study showed that YGDEY may form active sites with MMP-1 and MMP-9. Moreover, Western blot analysis was utilized to measure the protein levels of UVB-induced mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways. Therefore, these results suggested that YGDEY has a therapeutic effectiveness in prevention of UVB-induced cellular damage, and it is a candidate worthy of being developed as a potential natural antioxidant and food additive.

Abstract
A protease from neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartramii) viscera (SVCE3(f)) was partially purified by isoelectric solubilization/precipitation combined with ultra-membrane filtration (ISP-UMF). Two protein bands of 45 and 27 KDa were determined by SDS-PAGE assay. The protease characteristic of the protein band of 45 KDa was confirmed using casein zymography analysis. The result of UPLC-ESI-MS/MS suggested that the band of 45 KDa could be a cathepsin D-like protease. This cathepsin D-like protease showed an optimum pH of 3.0 and optimum temperature of 60 °C when casein was used as s substrate. Furthermore, its protease activity was stable at 30–50 °C and under a pH range of 1.0–5.0, maintaining about 60% of its initial activity. SVCE3(f) can digest half-fin anchovy (Setipinna taty) to generate antioxidant hydrolysates (HAHp-SEs). The degree of hydrolysis (DH) of HAHp-SEs increased along with the hydrolysis time and reached stability after 60 min of digestion. HAHp-SEs(30) with relatively lower DH exhibited the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity as compared with other HAHp-SEs. However, a stronger hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and greater reducing power were observed for HAHp-SEs that underwent higher DH. Accordingly, the partially purified cathepsin D-like protease of neon flying squid viscera using ISP-UMF could have potential application in antioxidant hydrolysates production.

Abstract
Seahorses, Hippocampus abdominalis, have a long history in traditional Chinese medicine as an important healthy ingredient in foods. This study evaluated the antioxidant activity of an enzymatic hydrolysate prepared from a seahorse bred in Jeju, South Korea. Experiments were performed in vitro using electron spin resonance spectrometry (ESR) to determine the free radical scavenging activity and in vivo using a zebrafish model to determine the protective effects against 2,2-azobis hydrochloride (AAPH)-induced oxidative damage. H. abdominalis protein hydrolysate (HPH) exhibited peroxyl radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 0.58 mg/ml) generated by the water-soluble AAPH (azo initiator of peroxyl radicals). HPH reduced dose-dependently both intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in AAPH-induced cells and cell death in AAPH-induced zebrafish embryos. The antioxidant peptide purified from HPH was identified as a tripeptide (alanine-glycine-aspartic acid) using Q-TOF ESI mass spectroscopy. Thus, this study demonstrated that HPH contains antioxidant peptides that exhibit a strong antioxidant activity. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Hippocampus abdominalis is one of the largest seahorse species and cultivated in many countries. Because of its large body size compared to other seahorse species, H. abdominalis has acquired considerable consumer attraction in the global market. Owing to its biologically useful properties, it recently gained attention as the natural products obtained from H. abdominalis have varied applications in the field of medicine, health care products, and functional foods. Thus, commercial products of this particular seahorse species are popular among customers, especially in China. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant property of H. abdominalism, cultured in a commercial seahorse farm in Jeju Island. Owing to its prominent antioxidant activity, it could be used as an ingredient in medicinal preparations, nutraceuticals, and functional foods.

Abstract
Tuna protein hydrolysate (TPH) was prepared by hydrolysis with Prolyve BS and fractionated by membranes process. The antioxidant activities of recovered peptide fractions were evaluated. Four novel antioxidant peptides that were isolated from nanofiltration retentate exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, using gel chromatography and reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The amino acid sequences of isolated peptides were identified as Tyr-Glu-Asn-Gly-Gly (P2), Glu-Gly-Tyr-Pro-Trp-Asn (P4), Tyr-Ile-Val-Tyr-Pro-Gly (P7) and Trp-Gly-Asp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Tyr-Tyr (P8) with molecular weights of 538.46, 764.75, 710.78 and 887.85 Da, respectively. P2, P4, P7 and P8 exhibited good scavenging activities on hydroxyl radical (IC50 0.41, 0.327, 0.17 and 0.042 mg/ml), DPPH radical (IC50 0.666, 0.326, 0.451 and 0.377 mg/ml) and superoxide radical (IC50 0.536, 0.307, 0.357 and 0.115 mg/ml). P7 was effective against lipid peroxidation in the model system. The isolated peptides might be useful used as natural food additive in food industry and formulation of nutritional products.

Abstract
The nanocomposite of half-fin anchovy hydrolysates (HAHp) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) (named as HAHp(3.0)/ZnO NPs) demonstrated increased antibacterial activity compared to either HAHp(3.0) or ZnO NPs as per our previous studies. Also, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation was detected in Escherichia coli cells after treatment with HAHp(3.0)/ZnO NPs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the acute toxicity of this nanocomposite and to investigate its effect on intestinal microbiota composition, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production, and oxidative status in healthy mice. The limit test studies show that this nanoparticle is non-toxic at the doses tested. The administration of HAHp(3.0)/ZnO NPs, daily dose of 1.0 g/kg body weight for 14 days, increased the number of goblet cells in jejunum. High-throughput 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing of fecal samples revealed that HAHp(3.0)/ZnO NPs increased Firmicutes and reduced Bacteriodetes abundances in female mice. Furthermore, the microbiota for probiotic-type bacteria, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, and SCFAs-producing bacteria in the Clostridia class, e.g., Lachnospiraceae_unclassified and Lachnospiraceae_UCG-001, were enriched in the feces of female mice. Increases of SCFAs, especially statistically increased propionic and butyric acids, indicated the up-regulated anti-inflammatory activity of HAHp(3.0)/ZnO NPs. Additionally, some positive responses in liver, like markedly increased glutathione and decreased malonaldehyde contents, indicated the improved oxidative status. Therefore, our results suggest that HAHp(3.0)/ZnO NPs could have potential applications as a safe regulator of intestinal microbiota or also can be used as an antioxidant used in food products.

Abstract
Marine bioactive peptides, as a source of unique bioactive compounds, are the focus of current research. They exert various biological roles, some of the most crucial of which are antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, anticancer activity, antihypertensive activity, anti-inflammatory activity, and so forth, and specific characteristics of the bioactivities are described. This review also describes various manufacturing techniques for marine bioactive peptides using organic synthesis, microwave assisted extraction, chemical hydrolysis, and enzymes hydrolysis. Finally, purification of marine bioactive peptides is described, including gel or size exclusion chromatography, ion-exchange column chromatography, and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which are aimed at finding a fast, simple, and effective method to obtain the target peptides.

Abstract
In this study, the stable collagen hydrolysate was prepared by alcalase hydrolysis and twice simulated gastrointestinal digestion from Alaska pollock skin. The characteristics of hydrolysates and antioxidant activities in vitro, including 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical (ABTS•+) scavenging activity, ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and hydroxyl radical (OH·) scavenging activity, were determined. After twice simulated gastrointestinal digestion of skin collagen (SGI-2), the degree of hydrolysis (DH) reached 26.17%. The main molecular weight fractions of SGI-2 were 1026.26 and 640.53 Da, accounting for 59.49% and 18.34%, respectively. Amino acid composition analysis showed that SGI-2 had high content of total hydrophobic amino acid (307.98/1000). With the simulated gastrointestinal digestion progressing, the antioxidant activities increased significantly (p < 0.05). SGI-2 was further purified by gel filtration chromatography, ion exchange chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography, and the A1a3c-p fraction with high hydroxyl radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 7.63 μg/mL) was obtained. The molecular weights and amino acid sequences of key peptides of A1a3c-p were analyzed using high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS) combined with de novo software and UniProt of MaxQuant software. Four peptides were identified from A1a3c-p, including YGCC (444.1137 Da) and DSSCSG (554.1642 Da) identified by de novo software and NNAEYYK (900.3978 Da) and PAGNVR (612.3344 Da) identified by UniProt of MaxQuant software. The molecular weights and amino acid sequences of four peptides were in accordance with the features of antioxidant peptides. The results indicated that different peptides were identified by different data analysis software according to spectrometry mass data. Considering the complexity of LC-ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS, it was necessary to use the different methods to identify the key peptides from protein hydrolysates.

Abstract
Peptides derived from dietary proteins, have been reported to display significant antioxidant activity, which may exert notably beneficial effects in promoting human health and in food processing. Recently, much research has focused on the generation, separation, purification and identification of novel peptides from various protein sources. Some researchers have tried to discover the structural characteristics of antioxidant peptides in order to lessen or avoid the tedious and aimless work involving the ongoing generated peptide preparation schemes. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge on the relationship between the structural features of peptides and their antioxidant activities. The relationship between the structure of the precursor proteins and their abilities to release antioxidant fragments will also be summarized and inferred. The preparation methods and antioxidant capacity evaluation assays of peptides and a prediction scheme of quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) will also be pointed out and discussed.
