Abstract
This study investigated the characteristics and frequency of perioperative anaphylactic shock induced by cefuroxime, so as to provide a reference for the safe and rational use of cefuroxime in the perioperative period. Cases of perioperative anaphylactic shock caused by cefuroxime in our hospital from 2011 to 2021 were extracted from the Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring System. Literature reporting adverse drug reactions (ADR) including cefuroxime-induced anaphylactic shock in perioperative settings was collected from the CNKI, VIP, Wanfang, PubMed, and Web of Science databases from their respective inception to May 2022. Statistical analysis was performed for all cases of cefuroxime-induced perioperative anaphylactic shock. A total of 31 patients were included [13 men (48.1%) and 14 women (51.9%)], most of whom were over 60 years old (n=16, 59.3%); 9 (29.0%) patients had a history of drug allergy; 5 (16.1%) patients had received skin tests, but with negative results; 28 (90.3%) patients received treatment intravenously; 22 (71.0%) patients were treated after anesthesia. For 20 (64.5%) patients the ADR occurred within 10 minutes after anesthesia. The main manifestations were hypotension, dyspnea, rash, and tachycardia. For all patients, symptoms resolved after withdrawal of the drug and active rescue, and there were no deaths. A history of allergy and skin test findings may have limitations in predicting perioperative anaphylactic shock caused by cefuroxime; greater vigilance should be exercised when using cefuroxime in the perioperative period. Close monitoring is recommended for patients undergoing treatment with cefuroxime. Rescue therapy should be administered for allergic shock, and suitable response measures must be taken in a timely manner to ensure the safety of patients.

Abstract
Osteoporosis predisposes to fractures, which affect the quality of life and can be life-threatening. However, the knowledge, attitudes and preventive behaviors of osteoporosis in older adults are insufficient. The aim of this paper was to develop and test the effect of a bone-preserving board game program among older adults. A convenience sample of 85 older adults recruited from two community activity centers in southern Taiwan were assigned to either an experimental group or a control group. The experimental group played a bone-preserving board game for 4 weeks, and the control group participated in routine community center activities. The generalized estimating equation showed significantly larger improvements in knowledge, attitudes, and preventive behaviors in the experimental group than in the control group. Board games designed for older adults can support public health education and help prevent osteoporosis. Our results provide a reference for educators, clinical practitioners and researchers.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the chronic respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function of adult residents in 3 towns of Hongtong County, Shanxi Province, and to explore their risk factors. Methods: The investigation of chronic respiratory symptoms and lung function status of adult residents in Hongdong County is based on the regional population of the entire county in Hongdong County. The project was initiated by the Science and Technology Department of Linfen City and coordinated by the Hongdong County Government. The investigation will be conducted in 3 townships in Hongdong County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province from April to November 2021: Demographic characteristics, respiratory symptoms, smoking dust exposure and other personal history were collected through questionnaires. Physical examination, routine blood tests and lung function tests were also performed on each individual. SPSS 22.0 software was used to conduct t test, χ2 test, ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test for statistical analysis of the collected information. Results: 10 945 subjects aged 18-102 years were included in the analysis, of whom 3 754 (34.3%) were male, 1 222 (11.2%) had a history of dust exposure, 7 164 (65.5%) had used straw and firewood as cooking fuel, and 3 296 (30.1%) had a history of smoking. Among the participants, 394 (3.6%), 339 (3.1%), and 1 543 (14.1%) had respiratory symptoms such as chronic cough, sputum, and dyspnea. Statistics showed that the population with chronic respiratory symptoms was more elderly and had a smoking history, and the incidence of chronic respiratory symptoms was higher in those who smoked more than 40 packs a year (all P<0.05). Men with a history of dust exposure were more likely to suffer from chronic cough and expectoration, while emaciation and biofuel use for more than 40 years were more likely to suffer from chronic expectoration and dyspnea (all P<0.05). The median values of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC) and FEV1/FVC in 1 second were 2.19 L/s, 3.24 L and 69.16%, respectively. Among them, the lung function of 5 801 (53.0%) respondents was lower than the expected value. The median FEV1/FVC decreased with the increase of age. The FEV1/FVC of people over 40 years old with smoking history was lower, the dust exposure history of people with decreased lung function was more than that of people with normal lung function, and the incidence of chronic expectoration and dyspnea was higher in people with decreased lung function (all P<0.05). The absolute value and ratio of eosinophils in patients with decreased ventilation function over 60 years old were significantly higher than those with normal ventilation function, but the level of body mass index (BMI) was lower (all P<0.05). Conclusion: In Hongdong County, Shanxi Province, grassroots residents have poor medical awareness, low lung function examination rate, chronic respiratory symptoms and lung function decline are associated with more risk factors. Primary medical institutions need to formulate prevention strategies and carry out lung function detection according to the actual situation, focusing on monitoring and follow-up of high-risk groups to achieve early and timely prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fire education is currently dominated by drill-based programs, however only a limited number of participants may take part in fire drills. This gap could be addressed by the development of innovative board game-based educational programs. OBJECTIVE This study sought to compare the effectiveness of board game-based and drill-based fire safety education programs in improving nurses' fire safety knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. METHODS In this quasi-experimental study, 122 nurses were purposively sampled from a hospital in southern Taiwan. The participants were divided into two groups based on their willingness. Sixty-two nurses in the game-based group took part in an hour-long educational board game for fire safety; and 60 in the drill-based group took part in an hour-long fire drill organized by the hospital. The participants' pre- (T0) and post-intervention (T1) questionnaire scores on fire safety knowledge, attitudes, and behavior were recorded. The statistical methods included descriptive statistics and t-tests. RESULTS After the interventions, both groups had improved safety knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. However, from T0 to T1, only fire safety knowledge was significantly higher in the game-based group than in the drill-based group, and there were no significant differences in fire safety attitudes and behavior between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS A board game-based fire education program is similar to a tabletop exercise, and drill-based programs more accurately reflect actual circumstances. Both methods can be applied based on the educational objectives and actual educational settings. The results of this study may function as a reference for designing clinical, educational, and academic interventions for fire safety in healthcare settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to determine if complete transthoracic echocardiography (TTE)-guided percutaneous atrial septal defect (ASD) closure without balloon sizing could be safe and efficacious in adult patients. METHODS A total of 551 patients with ASDs were enrolled in this study, of which 438 patients underwent percutaneous ASD closure. Patients who received TTE-guided percutaneous ASD closure were classified into group T, and those who underwent a procedure that was guided by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) were classified into group E. The clinical characteristics and the outcomes of the patients were analyzed. RESULTS The characteristics were comparable at baseline, except for the body mass index (BMI) (21.6 ± 5.3 vs. 23.8 ± 7.1, p < 0.001) between group T and group E. No significant difference was observed between the two groups regarding in-hospital outcomes, except for the duration of the procedure (29.8 ± 15.3 min vs. 41.5 ± 20.4 min), the length of stay in the hospital (2.1 ± 2.3 d vs. 2.9 ± 2.6 d), and hospital costs (USD 6233.3 ± 312.4 vs. USD 6673.7 ± 446.9). There were no significant differences in the incidences of long-term complications, cardiac chamber sizes, and tricuspid regurgitation severity between the patients in the two groups during the 10-year follow-up period. CONCLUSION TTE may be as safe and efficacious as TEE for the assessment and guidance of percutaneous ASD closure without balloon sizing in adult patients with lower BMIs who are commonly found in East Asia.

Abstract
AIM To examine the effectiveness of a psychiatric nursing board game in an undergraduate psychiatric nursing course. BACKGROUND Didactic teaching fails to assist students in deepening their understanding of abstract concepts in psychiatric nursing. The game-based learning of professional courses can address the demands of digital-age students, which may improve their learning outcomes. DESIGN A parallel two-arm experimental design was adopted in a nursing college in southern Taiwan. METHODS The participants were fourth-year students enroled in a college nursing programme in southern Taiwan. Simple random sampling was used to divide the class into intervention and control groups. The former participated in an eight-week game-based intervention course, while the latter continued to receive traditional instruction. In addition to collecting the students' demographic data, three structural questionnaires were developed to examine the variation in students' nursing knowledge and attitudes toward psychiatric nursing, as well as their learning satisfaction before and after the intervention. RESULTS There were a total of 106 participants, with 53 in each group. After the intervention, the two groups were significantly different in terms of their psychiatric nursing knowledge, attitudes and self-reported learning satisfaction. The intervention group's scores were significantly higher than those of the control group across all three dimensions. This suggests the positive effects of the board game intervention on students' learning outcomes. CONCLUSION The research outcome can be applied in formative and undergraduate nursing education in teaching psychiatric nursing globally. The game-based learning materials developed can be used to train psychiatric nursing teachers. Future studies should recruit a larger sample and increase the follow-up time for assessing students' learning outcomes, as well as examine the similarities and differences in the learning outcomes of students from different educational systems.

Abstract
Older people living in long-term care facilities remain largely inactive, and therefore promoting exercise in this population is necessary. This study evaluated the efficacy of a mindfulness-based exercise program in older residents of a long-term care facility in Taiwan. A convenience sample of 72 older residents of a long-term care facility were recruited and assigned to either an experimental group or a control group. The experimental group (n = 36) participated in an 8-week mindfulness-based exercise program, and the control group (n = 36) received routine care. The generalized estimating equation showed significantly larger improvements in a fear of falling, exercise self-efficacy, dynamic balance, and muscle strength in the experimental group than in the control group from baseline to the end of the intervention and 3 months after the end of the intervention. This study provides a reference for how to improve exercise practice in older people living in long-term care facilities.

Abstract
COVID-19 has greatly affected human life for over 3 years. In this review, we focus on smart healthcare solutions that address major requirements for coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, including (1) the continuous monitoring of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, (2) patient stratification with distinct short-term outcomes (eg, mild or severe diseases) and long-term outcomes (eg, long COVID), and (3) adherence to medication and treatments for patients with COVID-19. Smart healthcare often utilizes medical artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing and integrates cutting-edge biological and optoelectronic techniques. These are valuable technologies for addressing the unmet needs in the management of COVID. By leveraging deep learning/machine learning capabilities and big data, medical AI can perform precise prognosis predictions and provide reliable suggestions for physicians' decision-making. Through the assistance of the Internet of Medical Things, which encompasses wearable devices, smartphone apps, internet-based drug delivery systems, and telemedicine technologies, the status of mild cases can be continuously monitored and medications provided at home without the need for hospital care. In cases that develop into severe cases, emergency feedback can be provided through the hospital for rapid treatment. Smart healthcare can possibly prevent the development of severe COVID-19 cases and therefore lower the burden on intensive care units.

Abstract
This study sampled 86 community-dwelling older adults to investigate the effect of horticultural activities on their quality of life, perceived stress, and working memory. The results demonstrated that after 8 weeks of horticultural activities, the effect sizes (Cohen's d) of their quality of life, perceived stress, and working memory were 0.92, -1.32, and 0.62, respectively. Among the four domains of quality of life, the social relationships domain improved the most. For perceived stress, the score of the experimental group decreased from 1.70 (0.48) to 1.29 (0.58). For working memory, the score increased from 3.43 (1.13) to 4.14 (1.27), whereas the score of the control group did not change substantially. Statistical analysis conducted using a generalized estimating equation revealed a significant interaction effect between group and time (P < 0.001). This study provides a reference for improving the quality of life, perceived stress, and working memory in older people.

Abstract
Background The implementation of genotyping for anti-hypertensive drugs in clinical practice remains a challenge. We conducted this study to analyze the distribution of polymorphisms of antihypertensive drug-related genes in Changsha County in China and compare the clinical effectiveness of genotype-guided and clinical experience-guided antihypertensive therapy in hypertensive individuals. Methods A total of 9,933 essential hypertensive participants from Changsha County were consecutively enrolled in our study, and 7 genetic polymorphic loci (CYP2D6*10, ADRB1, CYP2C9*3, AGTR1, ACE, CYP3A5*3 and NPPA) were detected by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-fluorescence probe. From an available sample of 660 hypertensive participants, 495 cases were randomly identified by genotype-guided therapy and 165 cases by clinical experience-guided therapy. We performed 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring on each of these cases, pre- and post-intervention. Results In the enrolled 9,933 cases, the mutation frequencies of CYP2C9*3, ADRB1(1165G>C), AGTR1(1166A>C), CYP2D6*10, ACE(I/D), CYP3A5*3 and NPPA(2238T>C) were 4.41%, 74.60%, 5.55%, 57.08%, 30.94%, 69.03% and 1.19%, respectively. In both genotype-guided and clinical experience-guided groups, the comparisons of intra-group pre-and post-treatments showed significant decreases in diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P<0.01) and significant increases in the control rate of BP (47.1% vs. 38.6% and 37.5% vs. 33.9%, P<0.05) in response to adjusted antihypertensive agents. Correspondingly, the extent of the reduction of systolic blood pressure (SBP; 3.52±11.72 vs. 0.92±9.14 mmHg), the extent of the increase in the rate of BP control (8.5% vs. 3.6%) and the percentage rate of decrease of grades 2 and 3 hypertensive individuals were more significant in the genotype-guided group than that in the clinical experience-guided group (P<0.01). Conclusions While prescribing anti-hypertensive drugs, appropriate dosage and type adjustments should be made according to the gene mutation frequency and individual circumstances. Pharmacogenomics-guided personalized treatment of hypertensive patients is likely to be a more effective strategy, especially in those with significantly elevated SBP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of cognitive dysfunction in diabetes is increasing yearly, which severely affects the quality of life of patients and places a heavy burden on families and society. It has been demonstrated that impaired clearance of cerebral amyloid β-protein (Aβ) is a central event in the initiation and progression of Aβ deposition and cognitive impairment in diabetic patients. However, until now, the molecular mechanism by which diabetes mellitus induces impaired clearance of Aβ has remained unclear. OBJECTIVE To investigate the role and mechanism of lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) in Aβ clearance impairment and cognitive function damage caused by diabetes. METHODS SPF male C57BL/6 mice were bred, and streptozotocin (STZ) (60 mg/kg/d) was intraperitoneally injected for 5 days to establish a diabetes model. The novel object recognition test and fear conditioning test were used to assess the cognitive function of mice in each group. Western blotting, qRT-PCR, ELISAs, and immunofluorescence staining were used to detect the expression levels of Aβ and Aβ clearance-related proteins in mouse brains. HBMECs were cultured in vitro to establish the blood-brain barrier model. The clearance rate of Aβ and the expression levels of LRP1 were measured under different glucose concentration culture conditions. HBMECs were transfected with lentivirus to overexpress or knock down the LRP1, and then, the changes in Aβ clearance were detected again. We injected adeno-associated virus AAV9-SP-A-LRP1 shRNA into the tail vein of DM mice to selectively knock down LRP1 gene expression in cerebral vascular endothelial cells. Then, the cognitive function and the expression levels of Aβ and Aβ clearance-related proteins in the brains of normal, DM and LRP1 knockdown mice were detected. RESULTS Compared with the controls, diabetic mice showed impaired cognitive performance, increased deposition of Aβ in the brain and decreased expression of LRP1 in the brain microvasculature. In vitro experiments showed that high glucose can downregulate the expression of LRP1 in HBMECs and damage the Aβ clearance across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The reduction in the clearance rate of Aβ induced by high glucose was reversed by LRP1 overexpression but further substantially decreased when LRP1 was knocked down. CONCLUSION Hyperglycemia can impair Aβ efflux in the brain by downregulating the expression of LRP1 in the brain microvasculature, eventually resulting in cognitive impairment.

Abstract
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its variants of concern can infect people of all ages and can cause severe diseases in children, such as encephalitis, which require intensive care. Therefore, vaccines are urgently required to prevent severe disease in all age groups. We reviewed the safety and efficacy profiles of mRNA vaccines-BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273-demonstrated by clinical trials or observed in the real world. mRNA-1273 is effective in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection in preschool children (6 months-6 years old). Both BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 are effective in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection in school-aged children and adolescents, thereby preventing post-coronavirus disease (COVID) conditions. The common side effects of vaccination are pain at the injection site, fatigue, and headache. Myocarditis and pericarditis are uncommon. Monitoring post-vaccination troponin levels may help prevent severe cardiac events. The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus mutates its genome to overcome the herd immunity provided by mass vaccinations; therefore, we may need to develop new generations of vaccines, such as those using viral nucleocapsid proteins as antigens. In conclusion, the mRNA vaccines are generally safe and effective in preventing severe diseases and hospitalization among children and adolescents.

Abstract
A series of novel D-ring fused or substituted steroidal N-heterocycles were synthesized, and their chemical structures were characterized by spectroscopic analysis. The anticancer activity of these compounds against four human cancer cell lines (MCF-7, H1299, HeLa and HepG2) were evaluated and the structure-activity relationship (SAR) was also investigated. Compound 3c displayed significant inhibitory activity on the four cancer cells with IC 50 values ranging from 3.88 to 10.05 µ M. Overall, these studies indicated that construction of N-heterocyclic system with D-ring substituted containing a double bond at C-16 and C-17 or D-ring fused with [17,16-d]azolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine could be a promising strategy to improve antitumor activity for steroids deserved further investigation.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the choroidal blood flow and visual function in idiopathic macular hole. Methods: In this prospective study, fundus structure and visual function in 22 eyes with macular hole and their fellow eyes and 16 normal eyes were assessed. The best corrected visual acuity and retinal sensitivity were detected by the EDTRS visual chart and MP1. The choroidal blood flow was observed by optical coherence tomography angiography. The choriocapillary blood flow density was measured using MatLab. The thickness of the choroid and the aperture size of macular hole were measured using enhanced depth imaging mode of Heidelberg optical coherence tomography. Results: The best corrected visual acuity and retinal sensitivity of macular hole eyes [1.02±0.20 and (13.03±2.91) dB] were significantly lower than fellow eyes [0.15±0.11, t=17.019, P<0.001 and (17.25±2.03) dB, t=-4.085, P<0.001] and normal eyes [0.04±0.05, t=21.736, P=0.001 and (16.63±2.89) dB, t=-3.134, P=0.004]. The blood flow area of choroidal capillaries in macular hole eyes [(1.33±0.29) mm2] was significantly lower than fellow eyes [(1.98±0.13) mm2; t=-9.424, P<0.001] and normal eyes [(1.93±0.12) mm2; t=-8.707, P<0.001]. The paracentral blood vessel density of the choroid capillary layer in macular hole eyes (48.91%±10.12%) was significantly lower than fellow eyes (58.27%±6.18%; t=-3.502, P=0.001) and normal eyes (55.20%±2.12%; t=-2.830, P=0.020). The subfoveal choroidal thickness of macular hole eyes [(188±21) μm] was significantly lower than fellow eyes [(217±36) μm; t=-3.672, P=0.002] and normal eyes [(229±25) μm; t=-3.304, P<0.001]. The basic diameter of macular hole eyes was correlated with the blood vessel density (r=-0.584, P=0.004), the subfoveal choroidal thickness (r=-0.511, P=0.015) and the retinal sensitivity (r=-0.432, P=0.044). The retinal sensitivity was correlated with the blood vessel density (r=0.450, P=0.035) and the subfoveal choroidal thickness (r=0.429, P=0.046). Conclusions: The retinal sensitivity and fundus blood perfusion of idiopathic macular hole was decreased, and the thickness of paracentral choroid in the contralateral eye tended to become thinner. The reduced visual function in eyes with macular hole may be associated with the decreased choroidal thickness and worse blood flow of fundus microcirculation.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the influencing factors and the effect of myopia control in children treated with orthokeratology. Methods: It was a retrospective case series study. Data of 137 children from June 2016 to July 2020 in the Optometry Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University who were fitted with orthokeratology lenses and kept wearing them for 24 months were retrospectively reviewed. These children were divided into the modeling group (n=91) and verification group (n=46). The baseline conditions were recorded before they wore the orthokeratology lenses, including age, spherical equivalent refractive power (SER) and pupil area. The decentration distance was measured with a tangential difference map. Axial length (AL) changes of all children during 24 months were calculated. The influencing factors and the effect of myopia control were analyzed, and a regression equation was formulated with the modeling group. Then the influencing factors were imported with the verification group to compare the AL change differences between prediction and measurement. Results: There was statistical difference in AL between baseline and after wearing orthokeratology lenses for 24 months both in the modeling group [(25.16±0.90) mm vs. (25.56±0.82) mm; t=-10.119, P<0.001] and verification group [(25.29±0.71) mm vs. (25.67±0.69) mm; t=-8.785, P<0.001]. The AL changes in the modeling group showed significant correlations with baseline age (r=-0.365, P<0.001), baseline SER (r=0.308, P=0.003), pupil area (r=-0.260, P=0.013) and decentration distance (r=-0.352, P=0.001). The regression equation was as follows: y=1.609-0.056a-0.315b-0.009c+0.054d (y: AL changes, a: baseline age, b: decentration distance, c: pupil area, d: baseline SER). There was no statistical difference between prediction and measurement [(0.40±0.20) mm vs. (0.40±0.32) mm; t=-0.036, P=0.971]. Conclusion: Baseline age, decentration distance, baseline SER and pupil area contributed to predict the effect of myopia control after orthokeratology treatment.

Abstract
The clinical manifestations, laboratory and imaging results, diagnosis and treatment and prognosis of 5 patients with mucinous adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder were analyzed. It was found that the clinical characteristics of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder were very similar to that of gallbladder malignant tumor, and it was difficult to differentiate. Ultrasound guided gallbladder needle biopsy can confirm the diagnosis before surgery. Surgery is still the first choice of treatment. Since laparoscopic surgery has obvious advantages over open surgery, it is recommended to be preferentially used. If the tumor is under T2 stage and has no aggressive metastasis, the prognosis is generally good.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been implicated in the development and progression of diabetic vasculopathy. However, the role of profilin-1 as a multifunctional actin-binding protein in AGEs-induced atherosclerosis (AS) is largely unknown.
AIM To explore the potential role of profilin-1 in the pathogenesis of AS induced by AGEs, particularly in relation to the Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway.
METHODS Eighty-nine individuals undergoing coronary angiography were enrolled in the study. Plasma cytokine levels were detected using ELISA kits. Rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (RASMCs) were incubated with different compounds for different times. Cell proliferation was determined by performing the MTT assay and EdU staining. An AGEs-induced vascular remodeling model was established in rats and histological and immunohistochemical analyses were performed. The mRNA and protein levels were detected using real-time PCR and Western blot analysis, respectively. In vivo, shRNA transfection was performed to verify the role of profilin-1 in AGEs-induced proatherogenic mediator release and aortic remodeling. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 22.0 software.
RESULTS Compared with the control group, plasma levels of profilin-1 and receptor for AGEs (RAGE) were significantly increased in patients with coronary artery disease, especially in those complicated with diabetes mellitus (P < 0.01). The levels of profilin-1 were positively correlated with the levels of RAGE (P < 0.01); additionally, the levels of both molecules were positively associated with the degree of coronary artery stenosis (P < 0.01). In vivo, tail vein injections of AGEs induced the release of proatherogenic mediators, such as asymmetric dimethylarginine, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and the N-terminus of procollagen III peptide, concomitant with apparent aortic morphological changes and significantly upregulated expression of the profilin-1 mRNA and protein in the thoracic aorta (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Downregulation of profilin-1 expression with an shRNA significantly attenuated AGEs-induced proatherogenic mediator release (P < 0.05) and aortic remodeling. In vitro, incubation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) with AGEs significantly promoted cell proliferation and upregulated the expression of the profilin-1 mRNA and protein (P < 0.05). AGEs (200 μg/mL, 24 h) significantly upregulated the expression of the STAT3 mRNA and protein and JAK2 protein, which was blocked by a JAK2 inhibitor (T3042-1) and/or STAT3 inhibitor (T6308-1) (P < 0.05). In addition, pretreatment with T3042-1 or T6308-1 significantly inhibited AGEs-induced RASMC proliferation (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION AGEs induce proatherogenic events such as VSMC proliferation, proatherogenic mediator release, and vascular remodeling, changes that can be attenuated by silencing profilin-1 expression. These results suggest a crucial role for profilin-1 in AGEs-induced vasculopathy.

Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated that the levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, are strongly associated with hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Profilin-1, an actin-binding protein, has been documented to be involved in endothelial injury and in the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells resulting from hypertension. However, the role of profilin-1 in ADMA-induced vascular injury in hypertension remains largely unknown. Forty healthy subjects and forty-two matched patients with essential hypertension were enrolled, and the related indexes of vascular injury in plasma were detected. Rat aortic smooth muscle cells (RASMCs) were treated with different concentrations of ADMA for different periods of time and transfected with profilin-1 small hairpin RNA to interrupt the expression of profilin-1. To determine the role of the Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) pathway, RASMCs were pretreated with AG490 or rapamycin. The expression of profilin-1 was tested using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and western blot analysis. Cell proliferation was measured by flow cytometry and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide assays. Compared with healthy subjects, the levels of ADMA and profilin-1 were markedly elevated in hypertensive individuals, while the levels of NO were significantly decreased (p < 0.05). In vitro, studies showed ADMA-induced profilin-1 expression in a concentration- and time-dependent manner in RASMCs (p < 0.05), concomitantly with promoting the proliferation of RASMCs. Furthermore, ADMA-mediated proliferation of RASMCs and upregulation expression of profilin-1 were inhibited by blockade of the JAK2/STAT3 pathway or knockdown of profilin-1. Profilin-1 implicated in the ADMA-mediated vascular lesions in hypertension.

Abstract
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive nervous system disease that causes motor neuron (MN) degeneration and results in patient death within a few years. To recapitulate the cytopathies of ALS patients’ MNs, SOD1G85R mutant and corrected SOD1G85G isogenic-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines were established. Two SOD1 mutant ALS (SOD1G85R and SOD1D90A), two SOD1 mutant corrected (SOD1G85G and SOD1D90D), and one sporadic ALS iPSC lines were directed toward MNs. After receiving ~90% purity for MNs, we first demonstrated that SOD1G85R mutant ALS MNs recapitulated ALS-specific nerve fiber aggregates, similar to SOD1D90A ALS MNs in a previous study. Moreover, we found that both SOD1 mutant MNs showed ALS-specific neurite degenerations and neurotransmitter-induced calcium hyperresponsiveness. In a small compound test using these MNs, we demonstrated that gastrodin, a major ingredient of Gastrodia elata, showed therapeutic effects that decreased nerve fiber cytopathies and reverse neurotransmitter-induced hyperresponsiveness. The therapeutic effects of gastrodin applied not only to SOD1 ALS MNs but also to sporadic ALS MNs and SOD1G93A ALS mice. Moreover, we found that coactivation of the GSK3β and IGF-1 pathways was a mechanism involved in the therapeutic effects of gastrodin. Thus, the coordination of compounds that activate these two mechanisms could reduce nerve fiber cytopathies in SOD1 ALS MNs. Interestingly, the therapeutic role of GSK3β activation on SOD1 ALS MNs in the present study was in contrast to the role previously reported in research using cell line- or transgenic animal-based models. In conclusion, we identified in vitro ALS-specific nerve fiber and neurofunctional markers in MNs, which will be useful for drug screening, and we used an iPSC-based model to reveal novel therapeutic mechanisms (including GSK3β and IGF-1 activation) that may serve as potential targets for ALS therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of an enterovirus board game on improving knowledge of enterovirus for elementary school children in Taiwan. DESIGN A pilot study with a one-group pretest-posttest design. SAMPLE Using convenience sampling, 27 children were recruited from a single elementary school in Taiwan in June 2020. MEASUREMENTS Demographic data were collected and the children completed an enterovirus knowledge questionnaire. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, McNemar test, and Wilcoxon test. INTERVENTION Each experimental group of four to five children participated in a 40-min enterovirus board game. RESULTS After using the board game, the children had significantly higher mean scores for enterovirus knowledge. Specifically, the children had a higher proportion of correct answers for seven questions related to enterovirus after playing the game compared to before. CONCLUSIONS Board games designed for elementary school-aged children can support public health education and help prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases such as enterovirus.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of an 8-week horticultural activity intervention on attitudes toward aging, sense of hope, and hand-eye coordination in 88 older adults in residential care facilities. In the experimental group, the mean score for "attitudes toward aging" increased from 3.81 before the intervention to 4.74 points after the intervention (standard deviation SD = 0.24 and 0.27, respectively), and the control group dropped from 3.75 to 3.70 (standard deviations, respectively SD = 0.27 and 0.28). The mean score for "sense of hope" increased from 3.28 before the intervention to 3.81 points after the intervention (SD = 0.49 and 0.26, respectively). In contrast to the control group, the mean score gradually declined from 3.26 to 3.16 points (standard deviation SD = 0.54 and 0.48, respectively). In the test of hand-eye coordination, the time required to complete the cup stacking test significantly decreased from 33.56 to 25.38 s in the experimental group but did not significantly change in the control group. Generalized estimating equation analysis revealed a significant interaction between group and time (p < 0.001). The data trends revealed significant differences in outcomes between the experimental group and the control group. At 3 months after the end of the study, the effect size in the experimental group remained higher than that in the control group.

Abstract
Background The innate immune system especially Toll-like receptor (TLR) 7/8 and the interferon pathway, constitutes an important first line of defense against single-stranded RNA viruses. However, large-scale, systematic comparisons of the TLR 7/8-stimulating potential of genomic RNAs of single-stranded RNA viruses are rare. In this study, a computational method to evaluate the human TLR 7/8-stimulating ability of single-stranded RNA virus genomes based on their human TLR 7/8-stimulating trimer compositions was used to analyze 1,002 human coronavirus genomes. Results The human TLR 7/8-stimulating potential of coronavirus genomic (positive strand) RNAs followed the order of NL63-CoV > HKU1-CoV >229E-CoV ≅ OC63-CoV > SARS-CoV-2 > MERS-CoV > SARS-CoV. These results suggest that among these coronaviruses, MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 may have a higher ability to evade the human TLR 7/8-mediated innate immune response. Analysis with a logistic regression equation derived from human coronavirus data revealed that most of the 1,762 coronavirus genomic (positive strand) RNAs isolated from bats, camels, cats, civets, dogs and birds exhibited weak human TLR 7/8-stimulating potential equivalent to that of the MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 genomic RNAs. Conclusions Prediction of the human TLR 7/8-stimulating potential of viral genomic RNAs may be useful for surveillance of emerging coronaviruses from nonhuman mammalian hosts.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that triggers severe thrombotic cardiovascular events, such as stroke and myocardial infarction. In atherosclerotic processes, both macrophages and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are essential cell components in atheromata formation through proinflammatory cytokine secretion, defective efferocytosis, cell migration, and proliferation, primarily controlled by Ca2+-dependent signaling. Calmodulin (CaM), as a versatile Ca2+ sensor in diverse cell types, regulates a broad spectrum of Ca2+-dependent cell functions through the actions of downstream protein kinases. Thus, this review focuses on discussing how CaM and CaM-dependent kinases (CaMKs) regulate the functions of macrophages and VSMCs in atherosclerotic plaque development based on literature from open databases. A central theme in this review is a summary of the mechanisms and consequences underlying CaMK-mediated macrophage inflammation and apoptosis, which are the key processes in necrotic core formation in atherosclerosis. Another central theme is addressing the role of CaM and CaMK-dependent pathways in phenotypic modulation, migration, and proliferation of VSMCs in atherosclerotic progression. A complete understanding of CaM and CaMK-controlled individual processes involving macrophages and VSMCs in atherogenesis might provide helpful information for developing potential therapeutic targets and strategies.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the situation supported by the National Natural Science Foundation in the field of occupational diseases (H2402) in China, so as to provide a reference basis for the application and research of scientific researchers in the field of occupational diseases in China. Methods: The information system of scientific and technological achievements was used to search the financial support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in the field of occupational diseases from 2010 to 2019. Results: From 2010 to 2019, a total of 55 projects were funded under the Occupational Disease code (H2402) , with a total funding of 22.33 million yuan, of which 30 were supported by the Youth Science Foundation, 20 by the Youth Science Foundation and 5 by the Regional Science Foundation. Thirty five items of the research projects focused on pneumoconiosis and other respiratory diseases which accounted for 63.64 per cent. Forty one items of scientific research projects are supported by domestic institutions of higher learning which accounted for 74.55 per cent. Conclusion: The research support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China to the field of occupational diseases (H2402) has increased steadily, but the support of different research directions and supporting units is not balanced. It is suggested that departments concerned strengthen guidance and support for the applicants in less developed areas and weak research directions of the projects in the National Natural Science Foundation.

Abstract
Vascular dysfunction plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of sepsis. We elucidated the mechanisms underlying the amelioration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced vascular inflammation by oroxylin A (OroA) post-treatment in rats. The animals were intraperitoneally injected with LPS (10 mg/kg) to induce systemic inflammation and intravenously (iv) administered OroA (15 mg/kg) 6 h after the LPS treatment. The assessments included biochemical changes in peripheral blood, vascular reactivity which was evaluated by blood-vessel myography, morphological/histological assessment of inflammation, toll-like receptor (TLR)-4-mediated interleukin-1-receptor-associated-kinase (IRAK)-4 activation, changes in adhesion molecule expression, and endothelial junctional stability in the aorta. LPS significantly enhanced the proinflammatory cytokine release, increased vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1 expression, disrupted endothelial tight junction, reduced vascular endothelial barrier stability, and increased macrophage infiltration and accumulation in the aorta. All observed pathological changes and vascular inflammation were significantly reversed by the OroA post-treatment. Importantly, OroA suppressed the increased adhesion molecule expression and the endothelial barrier disruption by inhibiting LPS-activated IRAK-4-targeted inhibitory nuclear factor kappa B kinase (IKK) α/β complex phosphorylation, without directly affecting the interaction between LPS and TLR-4. Moreover, the iNOS activity induced by the LPS challenge was inhibited by the OroA pretreatment of the isolated aortic rings. These results suggest that OroA regulates the vascular tone by inhibiting vascular hyporeactivity caused by NO overproduction and reverses the endothelial barrier dysfunction and inflammation by inhibiting the IRAK-4-mediated IKKα/β phosphorylation. Overall, these findings suggest OroA administration as a potentially useful therapeutic approach for clinical interventions in septic shock.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sedentary behaviours may be related to factors such as self-efficacy, mood and social support. However, there is a paucity of longitudinal follow-up studies examining factors related to sedentary behaviour from physical-psychosocial perspectives in patients with heart failure. AIMS The purpose of this study was to explore the multidimensional associated factors and impacts of sedentary behaviour in heart failure patients. METHODS A longitudinal design was used. A convenience sample of 128 heart failure patients recruited from two large medical centres in northern Taiwan was obtained. Patients were interviewed with structured questionnaires to assess physical activity, symptom distress, exercise self-efficacy, anxiety and depression, social support, sleep quality and quality of life before discharge and at 3 and 6 months after discharge. RESULTS Heart failure patients reported low physical activity and tended to be sedentary. Sedentary behaviour was gradually reduced from hospitalization to 6 months after discharge. Sleep quality, quality of life, analgesic use, symptom distress and exercise self-efficacy were significant associated factors that explained 42.1-51% of the variance in sedentary behaviour. Patients with high sedentary behaviour had significantly greater depression and poorer sleep and quality of life than those with low sedentary behaviour at hospitalization and showed a significant improvement in depression at 3 and 6 months after discharge. CONCLUSION Sedentary behaviour is common in heart failure patients and has impacts on depression and quality of life. An appropriate physical activity programme focusing on disease self-management and enhancing self-efficacy is needed for heart failure patients to improve their sedentary behaviour and quality of life.

Abstract
In this study, perceived moral obligations were included in the protection motivation theory (PMT) model to explain people's intentions to participate in climate change mitigation behaviors. Empirical data and structural equation modeling results of a nationwide cross-sectional survey in Taiwan confirmed the higher explanatory power of the moral extension PMT model than that of the original PMT model. As expected, threat and coping appraisal of climate change affect protection motivation. In addition, perceived moral obligation affects protection motivation. This protection motivation enhances the intention to participate in climate change mitigation behaviors. The mediation effect of protection motivation was also verified in the moral extension PMT model. Practical implications and suggestions are proposed for the government and related authorities as well as environmental groups to encourage people to participate in climate change mitigation behaviors.

Abstract
Translation of a genetic codon without a cognate tRNA gene is affected by both the cognate tRNA availability and the interaction with non-cognate isoacceptor tRNAs. Moreover, two consecutive slow codons (slow di-codons) lead to a much slower translation rate. Calculating the composition of host specific slow codons and slow di-codons in the viral protein coding sequences can predict the order of viral protein synthesis rates between different virus strains. Comparison of human-specific slow codon and slow di-codon compositions in the genomes of 590 coronaviruses infect humans revealed that the protein synthetic rates of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SARS-CoV) may be much faster than other coronaviruses infect humans. Analysis of host-specific slow codon and di-codon compositions provides links between viral genomic sequences and capability of virus replication in host cells that may be useful for surveillance of the transmission potential of novel viruses.

Abstract
Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor activation on the perivascular sympathetic nerves via axo-axonal interaction mechanism causes norepinephrine release, which triggers the neurogenic nitrergic relaxation in basilar arteries to meet the need of a brain. Donepezil and huperzine A, which are the cholinesterase inhibitors used for Alzheimer's disease therapy, exert controversial effects on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Therefore, we investigated how donepezil and huperzine A via the axo-axonal interaction regulate the neurogenic vasodilation of isolated porcine basilar arteries and define their action on different subtypes of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor by using blood vessel myography, calcium imaging, and electrophysiological techniques. Both nicotine (100 μM) and transmural nerve stimulation (TNS, 8 Hz) induce NO-mediated dilation in the arteries. Nicotine-induced vasodilations were concentration-dependently inhibited by huperzine A and donepezil, with the former being 30 fold less potent than the latter. Both cholinesterase inhibitors weakly and equally decreased TNS-elicited nitrergic vasodilations. Neither huperzine A nor donepezil affected isoproterenol (a β adrenoceptor-agonist)- or sodium nitroprusside (a NO donor)-induced vasodilation. Further, huperzine A was less potent than donepezil in inhibiting nicotine-elicited calcium influxes in rodent superior cervical ganglionic neurons and inward currents in α7- and α3β2-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-expressing Xenopus oocytes. In conclusion, huperzine A may exert less harmful effect over donepezil on maintaining brainstem circulation and on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-associated cognition deficits during treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
Chronic diseases often impact the quality of life of the patient, causing complications and increased mortality and medical costs. The World Health Organization proposed applying mindfulness as an important strategy to help transform the situation faced by chronic disease cases and to promote their mental flexibility and adaptability. The author reviewed the related literature on mindfulness and introduces the "SMILE" strategy in this article. This strategy includes several stages, including 1) Starting where I am, 2) Motivating patients to become self-aware of the experience of self and internal and external environment interactions, 3) Developing individual health beliefs, 4) Learning mindfulness-based health-promotion behaviors, 5) Evaluating the efficacy of mindfulness-based health-promotion behaviors and self-regulation. SMILE is a powerful strategy with the potential to promote patient wellbeing, acceptance of the need to coexist with chronic disease, and freedom. Mindfulness is an abstract concept. This article provides a reference on mindfulness intervention for healthcare providers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adult retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) is extremely rare, and most cases reported in the literature were related to tuberculous infection. We present a case of RPA with acute airway obstruction as the main manifestation in a 66-year-old woman that was considered to be non-tubercular suppurative inflammation in the retropharyngeal space.
CASE SUMMARY A 66-year-old woman complaining of chills and fever was admitted to our hospital. She was initially diagnosed with an acute upper respiratory tract infection. She lost consciousness twice during hospitalization. She regained consciousness immediately upon emergency tracheal intubation. Acute upper airway obstruction was suspected as arterial blood gas analysis showed obvious acute retention of carbon dioxide before the second tracheal intubation. The diagnosis of RPA was confirmed by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Kocuria kristinae was isolated from blood samples taken from both hands. The patient recovered and was subsequently discharged after receiving antibiotic therapy together with surgical incision and drainage of the abscess.
CONCLUSION Clinicians should be alert to the possibility of RPA in patients with acute airway obstruction. Surgical incision and drainage is an effective treatment for RPA.

Abstract
Introduction A previous study has shown that Ala-Thr-Pro-Gly-Asp-Glu-Gly (ATPGDEG) peptide identified from boiled abalone by-products has high antioxidant activities and antihypertensive effect. Objective In this study, we further investigated its antiphotoaging activities by ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced HaCaT cells. Result UVB irradiation significantly increased the content of intercellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in HaCaT cells and decreased its content of collagen. First, the generation of intercellular ROS was reduced by abalone peptide in UVB-induced HaCaT cells. And activities of MMP-1 and MMP-9 were reduced by abalone peptide in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, western blot analysis demonstrated that abalone peptide downregulated the expression of p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinases, and extracellular signal-regulated kinases via mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and NF-κB signaling to protect type I pro collagen and DNA damage. Molecular docking simulation confirms that abalone peptide inhibited activities of MMP-1 and MMP-9 by docking their active site, among them N-terminal Ala, C-terminal Gly, and Pro at the third position of N-terminal made a great contribution. Conclusion and recommendation Abalone peptide could protect type I procollagen synthesis in UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells, and it is a potential peptide for the treatment of skin photoaging in the future.

Abstract
Background Postoperative cerebral complications (PCC) are common and serious postoperative complications for patients with Stanford type A aortic dissection (AAD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for PCC in these patients and to provide a scientific basis for effective prevention of PCC. Methods In this retrospective case-control study, 125 patients with AAD who underwent thoracotomy in our department from October 2017 to October 2018 in the department of cardiovascular surgery, Fujian Medical University Union Hospital were divided into two groups: patients with PCC (n = 12), and patients without PCC (n = 113). The general clinical data, the types of corrective surgeries, the intraoperative situations, the postoperative complications, and the midterm outcomes of the patients were analyzed. Results The patients with PCC were significantly older than the patients without PCC (P = 0.016), and the incidence of the preoperative cerebral disease history in the patients with PCC was significantly higher than those of the PCC (−) group (P = 0.024). The Euro SCORE II of patients with PCC was dramatically higher than the patients without PCC (P = 0.005). There were significant differences between the two groups in terms of the duration of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) (P = 0.010) and the length of moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest (MHCA) combined with selective cerebral perfusion (SCP) (P = 0.000). The monitoring of rcSO2 indicated that there was significant difference between the two groups in terms of the bilateral baseline (P = 0.000). Patients with PCC were observed to have experienced significantly longer intubation times (P = 0.000), ICU stays (P = 0.001), and postoperative hospital stays (P = 0.009), and they also had dramatically higher rates of pulmonary infection (P = 0.000), multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (P = 0.041) and tracheotomy (P = 0.022) after surgeries. The duration of MHCA+SCP (OR:9.009, P = 0.034) and the average baseline value of rcSO2 (OR:0.080, P = 0.009) were ultimately identified as significant risk factors. Conclusions PCC has a serious influence on the prognoses of patients following surgical treatment with AAD. The duration of MHCA+SCP and the average baseline value of rcSO2 were the independent risk factors for PCC.

Abstract
Abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) is a precious seafood in the market. It has been reported that biological active substances derived from abalone have anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-thrombosis potential. However, there were few studies to assess whether they have anti-cancer potential. In this study, we evaluated the anti-metastasis and anti-pro-angiogenic factors and mechanism of action of boiled abalone byproduct peptide (BABP, EMDEAQDPSEW) in human fibrosarcoma (HT1080) cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The results demonstrated that BABP treatment significantly lowers migration and the invasion of HT1080 cells and HUVECs. BABP inhibits phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-induced matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression and activity by blocking mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and NF-κB signaling and hypoxia-induced vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1α accumulation through suppressing the AKT/mTOR signal pathway. BABP treatment inhibits VEGF-induced VEGFR-2 expression and tube formation in HUVECs. The effect of BABP on anti-metastatic and anti-vascular activity in HT1080 cells and HUVECs revealed that BABP may be a potential pharmacophore for tumor therapy in the future.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the protective effects of a peptide (YGDEY, Tyr-Gly-Asp-Glu-Tyr) isolated from tilapia skin gelatin hydrolysates (TGHs), against UVB-induced photoaging in human keratinocytes (HaCaT) cells. Results showed that YGDEY significantly decreased levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), increased antioxidant factors (Superoxide Dismutase, SOD and Glutathione, GSH) expression and maintained balance between GSH and GSSG in HaCaT cells. Comet assay shows that YGDEY can protect DNA from oxidative damage. Furthermore, it significantly inhibited MMP-1 (collagenase) and MMP-9 (gelatinase) expression and increased Type I procollagen production. In addition, the molecular docking study showed that YGDEY may form active sites with MMP-1 and MMP-9. Moreover, Western blot analysis was utilized to measure the protein levels of UVB-induced mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways. Therefore, these results suggested that YGDEY has a therapeutic effectiveness in prevention of UVB-induced cellular damage, and it is a candidate worthy of being developed as a potential natural antioxidant and food additive.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the cerebral outcomes of patients underwent novel triple‐branched stent graft implantation combined with the intraoperative monitoring of regional cerebral oxygen saturation. Methods One hundred thirty‐seven consecutive patients who underwent the surgery of triple‐branched stent graft implantation in our department were enrolled in this retrospective case‐control study. The patients in group A received brain protection based on the intraoperative monitoring of regional cerebral oxygen saturation and the patients in group B received conventional brain protection. The general clinical data, the types of corrective surgeries, the intraoperative situations, the postoperative complications, and the midterm outcomes of the patients were analyzed. Results The incidence of postoperative cerebral dysfunction in the patients of group A was significantly lower than that in the patients in group B (3.2% vs 14.9%, P = .020). We found significant differences in the incubation times (30.3 ± 22.1 vs 42.3 ± 27.9 hours, P = .014), the lengths of intensive care unit stay (58.0 ± 54.3 vs 79.7 ± 55.5 hours, P = .004), and the hospital stays (19.3 ± 6.7 vs 24.9 ± 17.3 days, P = .045). A descending trend in the mortality rates was observed between the patients in the two groups based on the 20 months of observation; however, this trend was not statistically significant (1.6% vs 6.8%, P = .218). Conclusions The novel triple‐branched stent graft implantation procedure combined with intraoperative monitoring of the regional cerebral oxygen saturation was an effective treatment for Stanford type A aortic dissection, with a relatively low incidence of postoperative cerebral dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal hemorrhage (GH) is one of the most serious complications after cardiovascular surgery. The aim of the study was to provide an optimal therapeutic strategy for preventing postoperative GH in high-risk patients. METHODS This retrospective case-control study included 188 adult patients at high risk of postoperative GH. These patients were divided into two groups based on a strategy for preventing postoperative GH: Group A (n = 97) received continuous intravenous infusion of proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) combined with early enteral nutrition, and Group B (n = 91) received a bolus intravenous infusion of PPI combined with late enteral nutrition. The clinical features of the groups were examined. RESULTS The incidence of postoperative GH in the patients of group A was significantly lower than the patients in group B. The duration from the end of surgery to eating for the first time in the patients of group A was significantly shorter than in the patients of group B. A descending trend in 30-day mortality was observed in the patients of group A compared with group B, but no significant difference was found between the two groups. CONCLUSION Continuous intravenous infusion of PPI combined with early enteral nutrition could effectively prevent GH and reduce 30-day mortality after cardiovascular surgery in high-risk patients.

Abstract
According to a previous study, YGDEY from tilapia fish skin gelatin hydrolysates has strong free radical scavenging activity. In the present study, the protective effect of YGDEY against oxidative stress induced by ethanol in HepG2 cells was investigated. First, cells were incubated with YGDEY (10, 20, 50, and 100 μM) to assess cytotoxicity, and there was no significant change in cell viability. Next, it was established that YGDEY decreased the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Western blot results indicated that YGDEY increased the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) and decreased the expression of gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) in HepG2 cells. It was then revealed that YGDEY markedly reduced the expressions of bax and cleaved-caspase-3 (c-caspase-3); inhibited phosphorylation of Akt, IκB-α, p65, and p38; and increased the level of bcl-2. Moreover, the comet assay showed that YGDEY effectively decreased the amount of ethanol-induced DNA damage. Thus, YGDEY protected HepG2 cells from alcohol-induced injury by inhibiting oxidative stress, and this may be associated with the Akt/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal transduction pathways. These results demonstrate that YGDEY from tilapia fish skin gelatin hydrolysates protects HepG2 cells from oxidative stress, making it a potential functional food ingredient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Genetically modified (GM) foods have received substantial attention in recent years for being associated with unnaturalness, untrustworthiness, moral considerations, uncertainty, unhealthiness, and risks. This study highlighted the relevance of how social representations of genetically modified (GM) foods influence the Taiwanese public's willingness to consume GM foods. RESULTS Moderated regression analysis results revealed that the social representation dimensions of adherence to technology and food as a necessity positively influenced the public's willingness to consume GM foods; however, the dimension of resistance to and suspicion of novelties had a negative influence. Food technology neophobia played a role in predicting people's willingness to consume GM foods and exerted moderating effects to enhance the negative relationship between the respondents' resistance to and suspicion of novelties and their willingness to consume GM foods. This neophobia also changed the positive relationship between food as a necessity and willingness to consume GM foods into negative. One-way ANOVA results revealed that food technology neophobia influences the public's specific social representations of GM foods, personal domain-specific innovativeness, and willingness to consume GM foods. CONCLUSION Innovations in the food industry exhibit a high market failure rate partially because of the phenomenon known as food technology neophobia, which refers to rejection of new or unfamiliar foods. The findings of this empirical study can facilitate the development of a clearer understanding of people's acceptance and usage of emerging technologies applied in the innovation of food products in Taiwan. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Memory retrieval dysfunction is a symptom of schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and absence epilepsy (AE), as well as an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. To date, few drugs have been reported to enhance memory retrieval. Here, we found that a coral-derived natural product, excavatolide-B (Exc-B), enhances contextual memory retrieval in both wild-type and Cav3.2−/− mice via repressing the delayed rectifier potassium current, thus lowering the threshold for action potential initiation and enhancing induction of long-term potentiation (LTP). The human CACNA1H gene encodes a T-type calcium channel (Cav3.2), and its mutation is associated with schizophrenia, ASD, and AE, which are all characterized by abnormal memory function. Our previous publication demonstrated that Cav3.2−/− mice exhibit impaired contextual-associated memory retrieval, whilst their retrieval of spatial memory and auditory cued memory remain intact. The effect of Exc-B on enhancing the retrieval of context-associated memory provides a hope for novel drug development.

Abstract
Out-migrating steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss from four Puget Sound rivers and associated marine basins of Puget Sound in Washington State were examined for the parasite, Nanophyetus salmincola in 2014 to determine whether recent trends in reduced marine survival are associated with the presence of this pathogen. A subset of steelhead from three of these river-marine basin combinations was analyzed for the presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to assess whether exposure to these contaminants is a contributing factor to their reduced marine survival. The prevalence and parasite load of N. salmincola were significantly higher in fish from central and southern Puget Sound than in fish from river systems in northern Puget Sound. The proportion of steelhead samples with concentrations of POPs higher than adverse effects thresholds (AETs) or concentrations known to cause adverse effects was also greater in fish from the central and southern regions of Puget Sound than in those from the northern region. Polybrominated diphenyl ether concentrations associated with increased disease susceptibility were observed in 10% and 40% of the steelhead sampled from central and southern Puget Sound regions, respectively, but in none of the fish sampled from the northern region. The AET for polychlorinated biphenyls was exceeded in steelhead collected from marine habitats: 25% of the samples from the marine basins in the central and southern regions of Puget Sound and 17% of samples from northern Puget Sound region. Both N. salmincola and POP levels suggest there are adverse health effects on out-migrating steelhead from one southern and one central Puget Sound river that have lower early marine survival than those from a river system in northern Puget Sound.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to analyze the disease distribution of patients in the late stage of dementia through a cross-sectional investigation and to clarify the association between apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotypes and the serum levels of total cholesterol, total triglycerides, and blood glucose in the late-stage Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients. Methods Patients who were in the late stage of dementia in a mental health center were enrolled in this study. A broad battery of neuropsychological tests and neuroimaging was applied to make the diagnosis. The APOE genotype was determined by the multiplex amplification refractory mutation system polymerase chain reaction. The association between APOE genotype and the blood level of biochemical parameters was studied. Results A total of 155 patients were enrolled in this study. The majority of patients had AD (67.8%), followed by vascular dementia (15.5%), mixed dementia (9%), and others (7.7%). The APOE ε4 allele frequency was significantly different in the different groups. The serum level of total cholesterol (TC) in APOE ε4 carriers was higher than in non-carriers (P<0.05). No statistically significant differences were found in the blood glucose and triglycerides (TG) levels between these two groups. Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first paper to study the characteristics of late-stage dementia in hospital patients in Southeast China. We found that the disease distribution was quite consistent with previous prevalence studies. Moreover, we found that the serum level of TC was higher in APOE ε4 carriers group. However, no association was found between the APOE ε4 allele and serum levels of glucose, TC and TG in the late stage of AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Practicing a health-promoting lifestyle is believed to be effective for delaying or preventing the onset of diabetes. However, although empowerment interventions have proven effective for encouraging the adoption of a health-promoting lifestyle in people with diabetes, these interventions are rarely promoted to people with prediabetes. PURPOSE The aims of this study were to develop an empowerment program for people with prediabetes and to examine its efficacy in terms of the adoption of a health-promoting lifestyle and improvements in blood sugar, body mass index, and self-efficacy. METHODS A randomized controlled trial was conducted between May and December 2013. A convenience sample of people with a fasting blood sugar level of 100-125 mg/dl during the previous 3 months was recruited from the health examination center of a hospital in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Participants were assigned to either the experimental group or the control group using block randomization with a block size of 8. The experimental group (n = 38) participated in a 4-month empowerment program (the ABC empowerment program), which encouraged participants to practice a health-promoting lifestyle in three phases: awareness raising, behavior building, and results checking. The control group (n = 40) received routine clinical care. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, independent t test, paired t test, and generalized estimated equations. RESULTS After controlling for the differences at baseline and considering the interaction between group and time from baseline to 1 week and 3 months after completing the intervention, the generalized estimating equation showed significantly larger improvements in a health-promoting lifestyle, blood sugar, and self-efficacy in the experimental group than in the control group (p < .01). Furthermore, the experimental group achieved a larger reduction in body mass index than the control group at 3 months after completing the intervention (p = .001). CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The empowerment program was shown to have short-term, positive effects on behavioral, physical, and psychosocial outcomes in a Taiwan population with prediabetes. The results of this study provide a useful reference not only for healthcare personnel when implementing empowerment interventions in people with prediabetes but also for nursing educators and healthcare policymakers.

Abstract
The aim of this article is to identify the factors that predict self-perceived nursing competency among new nurses in Taiwan. This quantitative cross-sectional survey was performed with a convenience sample of 105 new nurses. Data were collected with questionnaires. Multiple linear regression showed perceived benefit of preceptor policies to nursing capacity and age accounted for 21.1% of the variance in dependent variables for self-perceived nursing competency importance. Satisfaction with current preceptor, satisfaction with current nursing job, and participation in interprofessional education conferences accounted for 22% of the variance in dependent variables for self-perceived nursing competency adequacy.
