Vertical profiles and contamination assessments of heavy metals in sediment cores from typical intertidal zones in northern China

Multivariate statistical analysis of potentially toxic elements in the sediments of Quanzhou Bay, China: Spatial relationships, ecological toxicity and sources identification

In this paper, the spatial distribution, pollution degree, ecological toxicity and possible sources of seven potentially toxic elements (PTEs) collected from the surface sediments of Quanzhou Bay (QZB) were analyzed by obtaining concentration measurements. The results indicated that the areas with high Cu, Pb, Zn and Hg concentrations were mainly located in the Luoyang River estuary, while the areas with high contents of Cd and As appeared in the Luoyang River estuary area and in the southern part of QZB, respectively. The contamination indices showed that the Cd pollution degree was slight to serious, while other elements were slightly enriched. The calculation results of the potential ecological risk index (RI) and toxic risk index (TRI) indicated that Cd was the main element posing ecological risk among the PTEs of sediments in QZB, followed by Hg. Moreover, in approximately 30% of the surveyed sites, PTEs exhibited low toxicity to aquatic ecosystems. Finally, the self-organizing map (SOM) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model were used to determine the PTEs sources. Natural sources, industrial emissions, and the combustion of fossil fuels were three main sources for PTEs in the surface sediments of QZB. This study provides a reference for assessing sediment pollution and managing marine pollution in QZB.

Distribution and pollution risk assessment of heavy metals in the surface sediment of the intertidal zones of the Yellow River Estuary, China

Eleven heavy metals (V, Cr, Mn, Co, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in surface sediment in the intertidal zones of the Yellow River Estuary, China were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in summer and autumn 2019. Results indicated that the 11 heavy metals had the same sources. Sediment particle size and total organic matter were the main factors influencing the distribution of heavy metals. Most sites in the intertidal zones of the study area were not contaminated with V, Cr, Fe, Co, Zn, Pb, Cu, As, Mn and Ni, while Cd was the priority pollutant. Heavy metal pollution risk in autumn was higher than that in summer, which may be due to hydrodynamic effects. The present study showed that the heavy metal concentrations in the study area had a temporal decreasing trend compared to previous studies, which may be due to the reduction in human activities.

Water and suspended sediment runoff from vineyard watersheds affecting the behavior and physiology of zebrafish

Viticulture plays an important role in generating income for small farms globally. Historically, vineyards use large quantities of phytosanitary products, such as Bordeaux mixture [Ca(OH)₂ + CuSO₄], to control plant diseases. These products result in the accumulation of copper (Cu) in the soil and increases the risk of transfer to water bodies. Thus, it is important to evaluate whether the presence of Cu-bearing particles in water is toxic to aquatic fauna. This study conducted chemical, mineralogical, and particle size evaluations on water samples and sediments collected from a watershed predominantly cultivated with old vineyards. The proportion of Cu-rich nanoparticles (<10 nm) in the sediment was ~27%. We exposed zebrafish to different dilutions of water and sediment samples that collected directly from the study site (downstream river) under laboratory conditions. Then, we evaluated their exploratory behavior and the stress-related endocrine parameter, whole-body cortisol. We also carried out two experiments in which zebrafish were exposed to Cu. First, we determined the median lethal concentration (LC_{50-96 h}) of Cu and then assessed whether Cu exposure results in effects similar to those associated with exposure to the water and sediment samples collected from the study site. The water and sediment samples directly impacted the exploratory behavior of zebrafish, showing clear anxiety-like behavioral phenotype and stress in terms of cortisol increase (during the second rain event). The Cu exposure did not mimic the same behavioral changes triggered by the water and sediment samples, although it had caused similar stress in the fish. Our results highlight that even at low concentrations, the water and sediment samples from vineyard watershed runoff were able to induce behavioral and endocrine changes that may harm the ecological balance of an aquatic environment.
