Mangrove carbon and nutrient accumulation shifts driven by rapid development in a tropical estuarine system, northeast Brazil

Human activity has increasingly affected recent carbon accumulation in Zhanjiang mangrove wetland, South China

Mangrove wetlands are an important component of blue carbon (C) ecosystems, although the anthropogenic impact on organic C accumulation rate (OCAR) in mangrove wetlands is not yet clear. Three sediment cores were collected from Zhanjiang Gaoqiao Mangrove Reserve in Southern China, dated by 210Pb and 137Cs, and physico-chemical parameters measured. Results show that the OCARs in mangroves and grasslands have significantly increased by 4.4 and 1.3 times, respectively, since 1950, which is consistent with the transformation of organic C sources and the increase of sedimentation rate. This increment is due to increased soil erosion and nutrient enrichment caused by land use change and the discharge of fertilizer runoff and aquaculture wastewater. This study provides clear evidence for understanding the changes in organic C accumulation processes during the Anthropocene and is conducive to promoting the realization of C peak and neutrality targets.

Increasing carbon and nutrient burial rates in mangroves coincided with coastal aquaculture development and water eutrophication in NE Hainan, China

Mangroves sequester and store large area-specific quantities of blue carbon (C) and essential nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P). Quantifying C and nutrient burial rates in mangroves across a centennial time span and relating these rates to mangrove habitat is fundamental for elucidating the role of mangroves in carbon and nutrient budgets and their responses to environmental changes. However, relevant data are very limited in China. In this study, we used the radionuclides (210Pb and 137Cs) to determine chronologies and C, N and P burial rates in two mangrove forests located at different geomorphologic settings in NE Hainan Island, China. We found that the temporal patterns of C, N and P burial rates since 1900 fitted a quadratic function with a notable increase after 1960s in both mangroves, which coincided with the rapid development of coastal aquaculture since 1960s in NE Hainan and the subsequent coastal water eutrophication in this area. Sediment accretion rate (SAR) and mass accumulation rate (MAR) stayed relatively steady in the open-coastal mangroves, while they increased exponentially in the estuarine mangroves since 1900. The estuarine mangroves had significantly higher SAR and C, N and P burial rates than the open-coastal mangroves. C, N and P burial rates averaged at 141.52 g m-2 a-1, 6.27 g m-2 a-1 and 1.14 g m-2 a-1, respectively in the estuarine core, and these rates averaged at 61.71 g m-2 a-1, 3.71 g m-2 a-1 and 0.43 g m-2 a-1, respectively in the open-coastal core. The results suggest that estuarine mangroves may be more capable of surviving accelerating sea level rise under climate change and play a greater role in C accumulation and nutrient filtering under anthropogenic nutrient enrichment than marine-dominated mangroves. Blue C burial may be enhanced by coastal water eutrophication, but such a relationship needs to be tested in further studies.

Spatiotemporal response of water quality in fragmented mangroves to anthropogenic activities and recommendations for restoration

Mangroves have received substantial attention for their pivotal role as ecological barriers between land and sea, owing to their capacity to effectively capture considerable quantities of terrestrial pollutants. Mangrove fragmentation has been a widespread global trend. There is limited information on the water quality status of these small scattered mangrove patches in coastal sub-developed areas, coupled with a paucity of efficient and intuitive assessment methodologies. To address this gap, the Water Quality Index (WQI) was introduced to evaluate the spatiotemporal characteristics of mangrove water quality. The major sources of pollution and anthropogenic activities that affect mangrove water quality were identified. The results revealed an average WQI value of 44.1 ± 13.3 for mangrove patches, consistently indicating a "low" water quality classification throughout all seasons. Both the size and natural conditions impact the water quality of mangroves. The large artificial patch (WQI: 56.4 ± 7.61) and the natural patch (WQI: 46.6 ± 13.6) exhibited relatively superior water quality, while the WQI value of a size-equivalent artificial patch compared with the natural patch is 38.6 ± 11.8. Aquaculture was the primary human activity that adversely affected the water quality of mangroves, and the potential sources of pollution were rainfall runoff and river discharge. These findings elucidate the unfavorable water quality characteristics and dominant pollution of fragmented mangroves, and validate the applicability of the WQI method for long-term evaluation of the water quality in mangrove patches. This study provides a basis for decision-making in water quality assessment and management of coastal wetlands and marine ecosystems. Scientific guidance to the management for mangrove protection and restoration was offered, such as regulating aquaculture activities, controlling non-point source pollution, implementing mangrove reforestation by using native species in historical mangrove sites.

Outwelling of nutrients into the Pasur River estuary from the Sundarbans mangrove creeks

The Pasur River estuary (PRE), the largest estuary in the Sundarbans mangrove area, provides vital fishery resources and supports millions of livelihoods in the southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh. This study focused on the tidal and run-off effects on the outwelling of nutrients from the Sundarbans mangrove creeks to the PRE. Spatial and temporal variations of nutrient and chlorophyll-a concentrations were assessed by water sampling at 11 stations in the study area from January to December 2019. Dissolved inorganic nutrients and chlorophyll-a were analyzed by standard methods using a spectrophotometer. In the tidal mangrove creeks, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate, and silica concentrations were significantly higher (p < 0.05) during the spring tide than those during the neap tide, suggesting that these nutrients were flushed from the mangrove area by the inundation and tidal mixing of the spring tide. In general, chlorophyll-a (mean ± SD) concentrations in the PRE and the tidal mangrove creeks were 5.62 ± 1.30 μg/L and 9.03 ± 0.59 μg/L in the wet season, respectively. During the dry season, the chlorophyll-a decreased to 4.37 μg/L ± 0.68 and 4.94 ± 1.52 μg/L in the PRE and the tidal mangrove creek, respectively. The amount of nutrients outwelled from the mangrove creeks to the estuary was 1.53 ± 0.67 mg/L DIP, 0.001 ± 0.0004 mg/L DIN, and 1.38 ± 0.48 mg/L dissolved silica. DIP, silica, and chlorophyll-a concentrations were significantly higher (p < 0.05) during the spring tide compared to the neap tide, but salinity was not significantly (p > 0.05) different between the two tidal levels. This study showed that the mangrove creeks formed an important link in transporting nutrients from the mangrove forest to the estuary.

Elemental Composition of Above and Belowground Mangrove Tissue and Sediment in Managed and Unmanaged Compartments of the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve

Mangrove productivity depends on the storage of nutrients and elements. Elemental concentrations were examined in leaves, roots, and sediments for three age stands (15, 25 years, and VJR) of Rhizophora apiculata in the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve (MMFR). Six compartments with two compartments each for each age group were used to analyze sixteen elements. Four types of elemental patterns were examined with decreasing order during analysis: (1) Cd < Cu < Pb < Zn < Mg < Mn < Fe < K < Na < Ca and P% < S% < N% < C% in leaves, (2) Cd < Pb < Cu < Zn < Mg < Mn < Fe < K < Na < Ca and P% < S% < N% < C% in roots, (3) Cd < Pb < Cu < Zn < Mg < Mn < K < Fe < Na < Ca and P% < N% < S% < C% in sediment samples and (4) Cd(S) < Pb(S) < Cu(S) < Zn(S) < Mg(S) < Mn(L) < K(L) < Fe(S) < Na(R) < Ca(R) and P%(S) < S%(S) < N%(L) < C%(R) collectively for all samples. Evidence that elements do not store primarily in above-ground biomass can be found in the observation that elements are stored more in sediment and roots. The outcome of the present study shows that the rate of increase of elements in trees (leaves and roots) was less as compared to sediments, where the elemental concentration increased considerably with time. Elemental concentration comparison within three age classes showed that C, N, and S were significantly different in all three types of samples. The δ15N ratios showed positive values in all six compartments which supported the concept that the δ15N ratio could not be observed in N concentration in this study. The δ13C values showed more negative values in all six compartments which represented less salinity and a freshwater intake. The S, P, and heavy metals concentrations were high. The concentrations of Cd, P, N, C, and S in the sediment influenced variations in four compartments in accordance with the three mangrove age groups. The results of this study can be utilized to create management plans for MMFR and conduct risk assessments of the elements’ concentration in sediment.

Increasing carbon, nutrient and trace metal accumulation driven by development in a mangrove estuary in south Asia

Mangrove forests sequester organic carbon, nutrients and toxic metals sorbed to fine sediment, and thus restrict the mobility of pollutants through estuarine environments. However, mangrove removal and environmental degradation caused by industrial activity and urban growth can impact the ability of mangrove communities to provide these critical ecosystem services. Here, we use sediment profiles from an impacted tropical estuary in southwest India to provide a c. 70-year record of carbon, nutrient and trace metal burial in the context of rapid urban development and the systemic removal of mangrove communities. Our results show that carbon and nutrient accumulation rates increase sharply during the 1990's in accordance with the high rates of deforestation. Nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation rates increased fourfold and twofold, respectively, during the same period. Organic carbon accumulation was fivefold higher than the global average during this period, reflecting intense deforestation during the last three decades. The enrichment of Hg, Zn, Pb, Mo, Ni, Cu and Mn demonstrate clear anthropogenic impact starting in the 1950's and peaking in 1990. Mercury, the trace metal with the highest enrichment factor, increased sevenfold in the most recent sediments due to increased fossil fuel emissions, untreated water and incineration of medical waste and/or fertilizers used in aquaculture. Organic carbon isotope (δ¹³C) and C:N molar ratios indicate shifts to more terrestrial-derived source of organic matter in the most recent sediments reflecting growing deforestation of which may be prevalent in southeast Asia due to increasing development. This study emphasizes the critical role played by mangrove ecosystems in attenuating anthropogenically-derived pollutants, including carbon sequestration, and reveals the long-term consequences of mangrove deforestation in the context of rapidly developing economies.

Assessment of the temporal retention of mercury and nutrient records within the mangrove sediments of a highly impacted estuary

Mangrove ecosystems are dynamic and biodiverse environments with the capacity to sequester more organic carbon per unit area, per time, than terrestrial forests, yet are among one of the most heavily degraded ecosystems on Earth. Here, we quantify trace metal, nutrient and carbon accumulation rates in a tropical mangrove environment in northeast Brazil, a region that has been rapidly developed over the past seven decades. Carbon accumulation rate results show modest or no increase since the 1950's, when major development occurred in the region. Organic carbon isotope (δ¹³C) and C:N molar ratios indicate that the OM is primarily derived from autochthonous C₃ plant sources. However, the most recent sediments revealed changes from terrestrial to alga-derived source of OM, which is consistent with the increase of total nitrogen, δ¹⁵N and total phosphorous content in the last seven decades, suggesting anthropogenic impact. Furthermore, the Hg enrichment factor (EF) in mangrove sediments is shown to have increased 13-fold since the 1960's, highlighting the ability of tropical mangrove systems in trap filtering pollutants from proximal urban development.

Impacts of Climate Change on Blue Carbon Stocks and Fluxes in Mangrove Forests

Mangroves store blue carbon (693 Mg CORG ha−1) disproportionate to their small area, mainly (74%) in deep soil horizons. Global stock estimates for mangroves (5.23–8.63 Pg CORG) are equivalent to 15–24% of those in the tropical coastal ocean. Carbon burial in mangrove soils averages 184 g CORG m−2 a−1 with global estimates (9.6–15.8 Tg CORG a−1) reflecting their importance in carbon sequestration. Extreme weather events result in carbon stock losses and declines in carbon cycling and export. Increased frequency and ferocity of storms result in increasingly negative responses with increasing strength. Increasing temperatures result in increases in carbon stocks and cycling up to a critical threshold, while positive/negative responses will likely result from increases/decreases in rainfall. Forest responses to sea-level rise (SLR) and rising CO2 are species- and site-specific and complex due to interactive effects with other drivers (e.g., temperature, salinity). The SLR critical threshold is ≈ 6 mm a−1 indicating survival only under very low-low CO2 emissions scenarios. Under low coastal squeeze, landward migration could result in sequestration and CO2 losses of 1.5 and −1.1 Pg C with net stock gains and losses (−0.3 to +0.5 Pg C) and CO2 losses (−3.4 Pg) under high coastal squeeze.

Nutrient and physicochemical properties as potential causes of stress in mangroves of the central Red Sea

Mangrove ecosystems are some of the most productive and important sinks for sediment globally. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in possible causes of stress in mangroves, such as nutrient limitation, high salinity, solar radiation and temperature. We measured different factors casing stress and determined how they influenced oxidative stress and growth biomarkers in six study sites dominated by mangroves; Al Lith, South Jeddah, Dahban, Thuwal, Rabigh and Mastorah. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were recorded in water salinities and temperatures, nitrogen and phosphorus content in sediments, and antioxidant enzyme activities in different study sites. The highest salinity (40.75 ‰) and temperature (29.32°C) were recorded in the Rabigh mangrove stand, which corresponds to the lowest dissolved oxygen (5.21 mg/L). Total organic carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorus in sediment across the study areas were in the order Rabigh>Thuwal>Dahban>Al Lith>South Jeddah>Mastorah. Total nitrogen in mangrove leaves at Rabigh was the highest and about 1.3 times higher than the total nitrogen in South Jeddah mangrove ecosystem, very different from the ratio of total nitrogen in the sediments at Rabigh and South Jeddah mangrove ecosystems. The average values of δ13C (-17.60‰) and δ15N (2.84‰) in the six mangrove ecosystems, and the highest δ13C (-13.62‰) and δ15N (4.39‰) at Rabigh in the sediments suggest that nutrient input differed among study sites. Higher nutrient levels at Rabigh mangrove ecosystem were attributed to restricted circulation, camel grazing and land runoff with agricultural waste during seasonal flooding events. However, N limitation and possibly salinity contributed to stress in Al Lith, South Jeddah, Dahban, Thuwal, Rabigh, and Mastorah mangrove ecosystems. Salinity (r = 0.9012) contribute more to stress at Rabigh.
