MOF-derived CeO2 supported Ag catalysts for toluene oxidation: The effect of synthesis method

MOF-Derived ZrO2-Supported Bimetallic Pd-Ni Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of 1,3-Butadiene

A series of MOF-derived ZrO2-supported Pd-Ni bimetallic catalysts (PdNi/UiO-67-CTAB(n)-A500) were prepared by co-impregnation and pyrolysis at 500 °C under air atmosphere using UiO-67-CTAB(n) (CTAB: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide; n: the concentration of CTAB; n = 0, 3, 8, 13, 18) as a sacrificial template. The catalytic activity of PdNi/UiO-66-CTAB(n)-A500 in 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation was found to be dependent on the crystal morphology of the UiO-67 template. The highest activity was observed over the PdNi/UiO-67-CTAB(3)-A500 catalyst which was synthesized using UiO-67-CTAB(3) with uniform octahedral morphology as the template for the 1,3-butadiene selective hydrogenation. The 1,3-butadiene conversion and total butene selectivity were 98.4% and 44.8% at 40 °C within 1 h for the PdNi/UiO-67-CTAB(3)-A500 catalyst, respectively. The catalyst of PdNi/UiO-67-CTAB(3)-A500 can be regenerated in flowing N2 at 200 °C. Carbon deposited on the surface of the catalyst was the main reason for its deactivation. This work is valuable for the high-efficiency bimetallic catalyst's development on the selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene.

Catalytic Oxidation of Benzene over Atomic Active Site AgNi/BCN Catalysts at Room Temperature

Benzene is the typical volatile organic compound (VOC) of indoor and outdoor air pollution, which harms human health and the environment. Due to the stability of their aromatic structure, the catalytic oxidation of benzene rings in an environment without an external energy input is difficult. In this study, the efficient degradation of benzene at room temperature was achieved by constructing Ag and Ni bimetallic active site catalysts (AgNi/BCN) supported on boron-carbon-nitrogen aerogel. The atomic-scale Ag and Ni are uniformly dispersed on the catalyst surface and form Ag/Ni-C/N bonds with C and N, which were conducive to the catalytic oxidation of benzene at room temperature. Further catalytic reaction mechanisms indicate that benzene reacted with ·OH to produce R·, which reacted with O2 to regenerate ·OH. Under the strong oxidation of ·OH, benzene was oxidized to form alcohols, carboxylic acids, and eventually CO2 and H2O. This study not only significantly reduces the energy consumption of VOC catalytic oxidation, but also improves the safety of VOC treatment, providing new ideas for the low energy consumption and green development of VOC treatment.

Principles of Design and Synthesis of Metal Derivatives from MOFs

Materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated exceptional structural variety and complexity and can be synthesized using low-cost scalable methods. Although the inherent instability and low electrical conductivity of MOFs are largely responsible for their low uptake for catalysis and energy storage, a superior alternative is MOF-derived metal-based derivatives (MDs) as these can retain the complex nanostructures of MOFs while exhibiting stability and electrical conductivities of several orders of magnitude higher. The present work comprehensively reviews MDs in terms of synthesis and their nanostructural design, including oxides, sulfides, phosphides, nitrides, carbides, transition metals, and other minor species. The focal point of the approach is the identification and rationalization of the design parameters that lead to the generation of optimal compositions, structures, nanostructures, and resultant performance parameters. The aim of this approach is to provide an inclusive platform for the strategies to design and process these materials for specific applications. This work is complemented by detailed figures that both summarize the design and processing approaches that have been reported and indicate potential trajectories for development. The work is also supported by comprehensive and up-to-date tabular coverage of the reported studies.

Synthesis and Peroxide Activation Mechanism of Bimetallic MOF for Water Contaminant Degradation: A Review

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials possess a large specific surface area, high porosity, and atomically dispersed metal active sites, which confer excellent catalytic performance as peroxide (peroxodisulfate (PDS), peroxomonosulfate (PMS), and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂)) activation catalysts. However, the limited electron transfer characteristics and chemical stability of traditional monometallic MOFs restrict their catalytic performance and large-scale application in advanced oxidation reactions. Furthermore, the single-metal active site and uniform charge density distribution of monometallic MOFs result in a fixed activation reaction path of peroxide in the Fenton-like reaction process. To address these limitations, bimetallic MOFs have been developed to improve catalytic activity, stability, and reaction controllability in peroxide activation reactions. Compared with monometallic MOFs, bimetallic MOFs enhance the active site of the material, promote internal electron transfer, and even alter the activation path through the synergistic effect of bimetals. In this review, we systematically summarize the preparation methods of bimetallic MOFs and the mechanism of activating different peroxide systems. Moreover, we discuss the reaction factors that affect the process of peroxide activation. This report aims to expand the understanding of bimetallic MOF synthesis and their catalytic mechanisms in advanced oxidation processes.

CeO2 Frustrated Lewis Pairs Improving CO2 and CH3OH Conversion to Monomethylcarbonate

Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), discovered in the last few decades for homogeneous catalysts and in the last few years also for heterogeneous catalysts, are stimulating the scientific community's interest for their potential in small-molecule activation. Nevertheless, how an FLP activates stable molecules such as CO₂ is still undefined. Through a careful spectroscopic study, we here report the formation of FLPs over a highly defective CeO₂ sample prepared by microwave-assisted synthesis. Carbon dioxide activation over FLP is shown to occur through a bidentate carbonate bridging the FLP and implying a Ce³⁺-to-CO₂ charge transfer, thus enhancing its activation. Carbon dioxide reaction with methanol to form monomethylcarbonate is here employed to demonstrate active roles of FLP and, eventually, to propose a reaction mechanism clarifying the role of Ce³⁺ and oxygen vacancies.

Yeast—As Bioremediator of Silver-Containing Synthetic Effluents

Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae may be regarded as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly biosorbent for complex effluent treatment. The effect of pH, contact time, temperature, and silver concentration on metal removal from silver-containing synthetic effluents using Saccharomyces cerevisiae was examined. The biosorbent before and after biosorption process was analysed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and neutron activation analysis. Maximum removal of silver ions, which constituted 94–99%, was attained at the pH 3.0, contact time 60 min, and temperature 20 °C. High removal of copper, zinc, and nickel ions (63–100%) was obtained at pH 3.0–6.0. The equilibrium results were described using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm, while pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models were applied to explain the kinetics of the biosorption. The Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order model fitted better experimental data with maximum adsorption capacity in the range of 43.6–108 mg/g. The negative Gibbs energy values pointed at the feasibility and spontaneous character of the biosorption process. The possible mechanisms of metal ions removal were discussed. Saccharomyces cerevisiae have all necessary characteristics to be applied to the development of the technology of silver-containing effluents treatment.

Combining the Potent Reducing Properties of Pecan Nutshell with a Solvent-Free Mechanochemical Approach for Synthesizing High Ag0 Content-Silver Nanoparticles: An Eco-Friendly Route to an Efficient Multifunctional Photocatalytic, Antibacterial, and Antioxidant Material

A straightforward, low-cost, and scalable solid-state mechanochemical protocol for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) based on the use of the highly reducing agri-food by-product pecan nutshell (PNS) is reported herein. Under optimized conditions (180 min, 800 rpm, PNS/AgNO₃ ratio = 55/45 w/w), a complete reduction in silver ions was achieved, leading to a material containing ca. 36% w/w Ag⁰ (X-ray diffraction analysis). Dynamic light scattering and microscopic analysis showed a uniform size distribution (15-35 nm average diameter) of the spherical AgNP. The 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay revealed lower-although still absolutely high (EC₅₀ = 5.8 ± 0.5 mg/mL)-antioxidant properties for PNS for the further incorporation of AgNP, supporting the efficient reduction of Ag⁺ ions by PNS phenolic compounds. Photocatalytic experiments indicated that AgNP-PNS (0.4 mg/mL) was able to induce the >90% degradation of methylene blue after 120 min visible light irradiation, with good recycling stability. Finally, AgNP-PNS demonstrated high biocompatibility and significantly light-enhanced growth inhibition properties against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus mutans at concentrations as low as 250 μg/mL, also eliciting an antibiofilm effect at 1000 μg/mL. Overall, the adopted approach allowed to reuse a cheap and abundant agri-food by-product and required no toxic or noxious chemicals, making AgNP-PNS a sustainable and easy-to-access multifunctional material.

MOF-Derived CeO2 and CeZrOx Solid Solutions: Exploring Ce Reduction through FTIR and NEXAFS Spectroscopy

The development of Ce-based materials is directly dependent on the catalyst surface defects, which is caused by the calcination steps required to increase structural stability. At the same time, the evaluation of cerium's redox properties under reaction conditions is of increasing relevant importance. The synthesis of Ce-UiO-66 and CeZr-UiO-66 and their subsequent calcination are presented here as a simple and inexpensive approach for achieving homogeneous and stable CeO₂ and CeZrO_x nanocrystals. The resulting materials constitute an ideal case study to thoroughly understand cerium redox properties. The Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ redox properties are investigated by H₂-TPR experiments exploited by in situ FT-IR and Ce M₅-edge AP-NEXAFS spectroscopy. In the latter case, Ce³⁺ formation is quantified using the MCR-ALS protocol. FT-IR is then presented as a high potential/easily accessible technique for extracting valuable information about the cerium oxidation state under operating conditions. The dependence of the OH stretching vibration frequency on temperature and Ce reduction is described, providing a novel tool for qualitative monitoring of surface oxygen vacancy formation. Based on the reported results, the molecular absorption coefficient of the Ce³⁺ characteristic IR transition is tentatively evaluated, thus providing a basis for future Ce³⁺ quantification through FT-IR spectroscopy. Finally, the FT-IR limitations for Ce³⁺ quantification are discussed.

Chlorine-Coordinated Pd Single Atom Enhanced the Chlorine Resistance for Volatile Organic Compound Degradation: Mechanism Study

The development of catalysts with high chlorine resistance for volatile organic compound (VOC) degradation is of great significance to achieve air purification. Herein, Pd@ZrO₂ catalysts with monodispersed Pd atoms coordinated with Cl were prepared using an in situ grown Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) as the sacrifice templates to enhance the chlorine resistance for VOC elimination. The residual Cl species from the Zr-MOF coordinated with Pd, forming Pd₁-Cl species during the pyrolysis. Meanwhile, abundant oxygen vacancies (V_O) were generated, which enhanced the adsorption and activation of gaseous oxygen molecules, accelerating the degradation of VOCs. In addition, the Pd@ZrO₂ catalysts exhibited satisfactory water resistance, long-term stability, and great resistance to CO and dichloromethane (DCM) for VOC elimination. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) results elucidated that the generation of Pd₁-Cl species in Pd@ZrO₂ suppressed the absorption of DCM, releasing more active sites for toluene and its intermediate adsorption. Simultaneously, the monodispersed Pd atoms and V_O improved the reactivity of gaseous oxygen molecule adsorption and dissociation, boosting the deep decomposition of toluene and its intermediates. This work may provide a new strategy for rationally designing high-chlorine resistance catalysts for VOC elimination to improve the atmospheric environment.

A Review of Noble Metal Catalysts for Catalytic Removal of VOCs

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important precursors for the formation of secondary pollutants, such as fine particulate matter (PM) and ozone (O3), which will lead to severe atmospheric environmental problems to restrict the sustainable development of the social economy. Catalytic oxidation is a safe, eco-friendly, and simple method for eliminating VOCs, which can be converted into CO2 and H2O without the generation of other harmful substances. The fabrication and development of catalysts are very crucial to enhance the catalytic oxidation efficiency of the removal of VOCs. The noble metal catalyst is one of the commonly used catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of VOCs because of the high reaction activity, good stability, poisoning-resistant ability, and easy regeneration. In this review, the research progress of noble metal (Pt, Pd, Au, Ag, and Ir) catalysts for the removal of VOCs in recent years was summarized with the discussion of the influence factors in the preparation process on the catalytic performance. The reaction mechanisms of the removal of VOCs over the corresponding noble metal catalysts were also briefly discussed.

Synergistic Catalytic Performance of Toluene Degradation Based on Non-Thermal Plasma and Mn/Ce-Based Bimetal-Organic Frameworks

A series of Mn/Ce-based bimetal-organic frameworks, recorded as MCDx (x = 1, 2, 4, 6), were prepared by a solvothermal synthesis method to explore their effects and performance in the synergistic catalysis of toluene under the irradiation of non-thermal plasma. The catalytic properties of different manganese loadings in MCDx for degradation of toluene were investigated. The microphysical structures of the material were analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that a MCDx coupling with non-thermal plasma can greatly improve the degradation efficiency, the energy efficiency and the CO2 selectivity, and could also significantly reduce the generation of O3 in the by-products. Among the test samples, MCD6 with Mn:Ce = 6:1 (molar ratio) showed the best catalytic performance and stability, exhibited toluene catalytic efficiency 95.2%, CO2 selectivity 84.2% and energy efficiency 5.99 g/kWh, and reduced O3 emission concentration 81.6%. This research provides a reference for the development and application of synergistic catalysis based on bimetal-organic frameworks and non-thermal plasma in the reduction of industrial volatile organic compounds.

A comprehensive review on water remediation using UiO-66 MOFs and their derivatives

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a versatile class of porous materials offering unprecedented scope for chemical and structural tunability. On account of their synthetic versatility, tunable and exceptional host-guest chemistry they are widely utilized in many prominent water remediation techniques. However, some of the MOFs present low structural stabilities specifically in aqueous and harsh chemical conditions which impedes their potential application in the field. Among the currently explored MOFs, UiO-66 exhibits structural robustness and has gained immense scientific popularity. Built with a zirconium-terephthalate framework, the strong Zr-O bond coordination contributes to its stability in aqueous, chemical, and thermal conditions. Moreover, other exceptional features such as high surface area and uniform pore size add to the grand arena of porous nanomaterials. As a result of its stable nature, UiO-66 offers relaxed admittance towards various functionalization, including synthetic and post-synthetic modifications. Consequently, the adsorptive properties of these highly stable frameworks have been modulated by the addition of various functionalities. Moreover, due to the presence of catalytically active sites, the use of UiO-66 has also been extended towards the degradation of pollutants. Furthermore, to solve the practical handling issues of the crystalline powdered forms, UiO-66 has been incorporated into various membrane supports. The incorporation of UiO-66 in various matrices has enhanced the rejection, permeate flux, and anti-fouling properties of membranes. The combination of such exceptional characteristics of UiO-66 MOF has expanded its scope in targeted purification techniques. Subsequently, this review highlights the role of UiO-66 in major water purification techniques such as adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and membrane separation. This comprehensive review is expected to shed light on the existing developments and guide the inexhaustible futuristic scope of UiO-66 MOF.

Application of sulfate radicals-based advanced oxidation technology in degradation of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs): Recent advances and prospects

The large amount of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in wastewater has caused serious impacts on human health. In the past few years, Sulfate radical (SO₄^•-) based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are widely recognized for their high removal rates of recalcitrant TrOCs from water. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and persulfate (PS) are stable and non-toxic strong oxidizing oxidants and can act as excellent SO₄^•- precursors. Compared with hydroxyl radicals(·OH)-based methods, SR-AOPs have a series of advantages, such as long half-life and wide pH range, the oxidation capacity of SO₄^•- approaches or even exceeds that of ·OH under suitable conditions. In this review, we present the progress of activating PS/PMS to remove TrOCs by different methods. These methods include activation by transition metal, ultrasound, UV, etc. Possible activation mechanisms and influencing factors such as pH during the activation are discussed. Finally, future activation studies of PS/PMS are summarized and prospected. This review summarizes previous experiences and presents the current status of SR-AOPs application for TrOCs removal. Misconceptions in research are avoided and a research basis for the removal of TrOCs is provided.

Iron-based materials for simultaneous removal of heavy metal(loid)s and emerging organic contaminants from the aquatic environment: Recent advances and perspectives

The existence of heavy metals and emerging organic contaminants in wastewater produces serious toxic residues to the environment. Developing cheap and efficient materials to remove these persistent pollutants is crucial. Iron-based materials are cost-effective and environmentally friendly catalysts, and their applications in the environmental field deserve attention. This paper critically reviewed the removal mechanisms of heavy metals and emerging organic pollutants by different influencing factors. The removal of pollutants (heavy metals and emerging organic pollutants) in a multi-component system was analyzed in detail. The mechanisms of synergism, antagonism and non-interference were discussed. This paper had a certain reference value for the research of wastewater remediation technology which could simultaneously remove various pollutants by iron-based materials.

Selective laser welding in liquid: A strategy for preparation of high-antibacterial activity nanozyme against Staphylococcus aureus

Nanozyme was considered as one of the most promising substitutes for antibiotics, due to the selective catalysis for pathogens. In this work, a high-antibacterial activity SOD-like nanozyme based on hybrid Ag/CeO₂ nanocomposite was facilely prepared by using an innovative approach of selective laser welding in liquid. This prepared nanozyme displayed a high antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus under visible light illumination, the sterilization rate as high as 82.4%, which was 2.93 and 2.99 times higher than those of pure Ag and pure CeO₂, respectively. The enhanced antibacterial activity was attributed to the anchoring of Ag nanospheres on the surface of CeO₂ nanosheets, which induced the reduction of CeO₂ bandgap and boosted the visible light harvesting. Therefore, the charge carriers can be effectively stimulated to produce abundant reactive oxygen species on the Ag/CeO₂ nanocomposite via a SOD-like route. This work demonstrated a facile strategy for the preparation of high-antibacterial activity nanozyme, giving it great potential for scalable application in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industry.

Degradation of norfloxacin by MOF-derived lamellar carbon nanocomposites based on microwave-driven Fenton reaction: Improved Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle

In this paper, a new type of iron-based magnetic nanoparticle material embedding mesoporous carbon (Fe@C₇₀₀) was prepared by simple pyrolysis of a MIL-101-Fe precursor and employed in the microwave-catalyzed degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) with the presence of H₂O₂. Characterization results showed successful anchoring of Fe⁰ nanoparticles in the carbon matrix. Under optimal treatment conditions (Calcination temperature = 700 °C, H₂O₂ dosage = 40 mM, MW power = 500 W, NOR dosage = 50 mg L^-1 and initial pH = 4), the degradation efficiency of NOR reached 95.22%. The catalyst showed exceptional degradation properties over a relatively wide pH range. The mesoporous carbon in the catalyst promoted electron transfer, enhanced the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, increased contact between Fe⁰ and Fe²⁺ with H₂O₂, and accelerated the production of ·OH. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to predict the fragile active sites in NOR and to analyze the degradation pathway of NOR in combination with intermediates. Fe@C₇₀₀ retained good activity after 5 cycles. Reduced toxicity of intermediates predicted by T.E.S.T. compared to NOR. This study presented a new avenue for the rational design of Fe⁰-carbon composites as microwave-assisted Fenton-like catalysts for potential applications in wastewater treatment.

Facile preparation of graphitic carbon nitride nanosheet/agar composite hydrogels for removal of tetracycline via the synergy of adsorption and photocatalysis
