Abstract
INTRODUCTION PCOS, a common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age, affects fertility and increases the risks of other diseases. Early detection, risk factor assessment, and intervention are crucial to prevent long-term complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was conducted using a pre-validated questionnaire at two medical colleges in the UAE and Oman. The first study (UAE) results are already published. Here, we present the findings of the second study (Oman) and compare them. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The prevalence of PCOS was 4.6% (n = 7) in Oman and 27.6% (n = 69) in the UAE using the NIH criteria. The most common symptoms were irregular periods, acne, and thinning of hair. Students showed acne as the most prevalent symptom of clinical hyperandrogenism. Omani students showed significantly more acne [70.1% (n = 108) vs. 41.6% (n = 104)], while Emirati students showed a higher prevalence of hirsutism [32% (n = 80) vs. 23.3% (n = 36)]. A higher number of students had irregular periods 30.8% (77/150) in the UAE, although the difference was not statistically significant. The prevalence of PCOS was significantly higher in Emirati medical students than in Omani students (p < 0.05). The prevalence was also lower among medical students in Oman compared to an unselected population, reported by a study that included all consecutive women between 12 and 45 years of age attending a hospital. An increased trend in unhealthy lifestyle practices was observed in the recent study. Obesity was a strong predictor of PCOS symptoms across the populations in both countries (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The prevalence of PCOS and clinical signs of hyperandrogenism vary significantly between countries in the MENA region. There is a need to identify specific risk factors associated with PCOS in different populations, explore the genetic basis, and undertake collaborative efforts among healthcare professionals from various disciplines to raise awareness about PCOS and its associated risks.

Abstract
Introduction Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrinological disorder affecting millions of women worldwide, often leading to significant physiological and psychological challenges among medical students because of unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among female medical students at Taif University in Saudi Arabia in January 2024 using an online questionnaire distributed via a Google form. Results Out of 243 participants, 23 students (9.5%) were diagnosed with PCOS. One hundred and fifty-six (64.9%) of females experienced skin symptoms, including acne and oily skin, mostly during exam periods. More than half (n=131, 54.4%) had generalized anxiety, and 42 students (17.4%) reported delays in the menstrual cycle. Significant associations were found between being diagnosed with PCOS and experiencing generalized anxiety (p=0.020), irregular menstrual cycles (p=0.004), having diabetes (p=0.006), family history of PCOS (p=0.001), and being aware of PCOS and lifestyle relation (p=0.022). Conclusion The study findings showed that Taif University medical students do not exhibit a noticeably increased prevalence of PCOS. Still, most students are at risk of developing PCOS due to the positive family history of PCOS and excessive generalized anxiety and females with irregularity in the menstrual cycle and those who have diabetes.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age. It increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, endometrial cancer, infertility, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm birth. Accurately identifying predictors of these health risks is crucial. Electronic health records (EHRs) offer an affordable approach, however, the validity and reliability of EHRs for PCOS diagnosis are unclear. A scoping review of the literature on the prevalence and reliability of the diagnosis of PCOS using EHRs was performed. An analysis of the feasibility of obtaining diagnostic variables from a PCOS patient database was also carried out. Eight studies met the criteria. The prevalence of PCOS ranged from 0.27% to 5.8%. Reliability varied, with one study reporting a sensitivity of 50% and a specificity of 29%. Another study found a 74.4% agreement between international classification of disease (ICD) codes and clinical criteria. The database analysis found only 13.7%, 8%, and 7.5% of women had all the necessary variables for an objective diagnosis of PCOS using the Rotterdam, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Androgen Excess and PCOS Society (AEPCOS) criteria, respectively. Using EHRs results in an underestimation of PCOS prevalence compared to other diagnostic criteria, and many women identified may not meet the complete diagnostic criteria. These findings have implications for future research studies on PCOS prevalence and related health risks.

Abstract
Women currently comprise the majority of students graduating from medical school and face unique stressors not seen with their male counterparts. In particular, during their medical education, women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) experience symptoms of the disorder, which strongly impact both their academic and social lives. This in turn influences their academic and professional future. Although women as medical professionals, in general, are happy with their careers, awareness, and understanding on the part of medical educators will definitely be helpful to women medical students in their path to being successful medical professionals. The first objective of our current study is to find the prevalence of PCOS in medical and dental students. The second objective is to find the academic and health impacts of PCOS and what type of interventions are being adopted to relieve the symptoms. Using the keywords such as "PCOS," "medical students," and "dental students", the search engines PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were used to retrieve relevant articles published from 2020 to 2022. After removing the duplicates, 11 prospective cross-sectional studies were utilized for qualitative and quantitative analysis. The pooled prevalence of 2,206 female medical students diagnosed with PCOS was 24.7%. The students in the various studies were aware of their PCOS diagnosis and were taking therapeutic medications. The most common associated complications reported were BMI abnormalities, abnormal hair growth, and acne, along with other complications such as stress and poor academic and social life. The majority also had significant family histories of concurrent clinical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and other menstrual abnormalities. Considering the huge impact of PCOS, medical educators, policymakers, and all stakeholders should take proactive measures to accommodate students' needs and bridge the social gap. Special awareness of needed lifestyle changes should be a part of the medical education curriculum for an inclusive educational environment, as it will minimize the gender discrepancy in academic satisfaction and professional life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting females of reproductive age. Clinical guidelines recommend following the diagnostic criteria of PCOS based on an appropriate assessment of the patient's clinical presentation. Sufficient awareness among the population will prompt females to seek medical attention when necessary. This study aimed to assess knowledge and awareness about PCOS among females above the age of 18 years in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and to correlate the level of awareness with women's backgrounds, demographics, and education levels. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study conducted in early 2020. 430 females over the age of 18 years were conveniently selected and interviewed in the UAE using a 21-item questionnaire that assessed participants' awareness of PCOS as a term, its causes, symptoms, complications, treatment, and prevention. 414 entries were eligible for data analysis. IBM® SPSS® Statistics version 25 was used for data entry and analysis. RESULTS 349 participants (84.3%) were familiar with the term PCOS. However, only 21.7% of them had sufficient awareness of the syndrome (95% CI = 17.77-25.71%). Being knowledgeable of PCOS was significantly associated with having a previous diagnosis (p = 0.002) and with studying or working in a medical field (p < 0.001). In addition, females who knew someone diagnosed with PCOS were 5 times more likely to be more aware compared to those who didn't (95% CI = 2.5-10.8; p < 0.001). Age, education level, and nationality showed no correlation with the level of awareness. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the level of PCOS awareness was insufficient in the study sample. Participants whose source of information was medical practitioners demonstrated more accurate knowledge. Accordingly, awareness of PCOS needs to be raised among females in the UAE, aiding early diagnosis and improving patient-oriented outcomes.

Abstract
Statistics indicate that at least 20-25% of women suffer from PCOS in the Gulf region. Despite its prevalence and negative implications on reproductive, metabolic, and physiological heath the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, in part due to the diversity of symptoms manifested by this disorder. In this review, we investigate causes of PCOS globally and draw on these studies, to determine the potential contributing factors for PCOS pathogenesis in the UAE population. The most frequently identified factors promoting PCOS pathogenesis that may be pertinent to this population include physiological factors such as insulin resistance, vitamin D deficiency, genetic factors, obesity, and anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) levels in the body as well as environmental factors such as air pollution, endocrine disrupting chemicals, and pesticide use. This evidence will help inform healthcare workers and government agencies to set up optimal guidelines for control and awareness of PCOS in the UAE.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. PCOS is a heterogeneous complex disorder of unwell defined aetiology. Some studies report its association to various endocrine, metabolic and immunological abnormalities. The hunger hormones ghrelin and leptin affect the pathogenesis of PCOS and might lead to the development of metabolic syndrome (MS) in obese women. AIM The study aims at evaluating the role of ghrelin and leptin level in female with poly cystic ovary syndrome as a biochemical marker for the diagnosis and monitoring progression. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study including one hundred PCOS patients and fifty apparently healthy subjects with regular menstrual cycle, visiting gynecology outpatient clinic of Kalar General Hospital, from the beginning of February 2015 to the end of June 2015. Body mass index (BMI) along with serum ghrelin, leptin, Luteinizing hormone (LH), Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone levels were measured for both groups. Serum leptin was determined using sandwich ELISA, while serum ghrelin was determined using competitive ELISA. Differences between patient and control groups were tested by using t-test. Also one way Anova was used to test the relation among different groups. RESULTS There was a significant decrease in ghrelin level and increase in leptin levels in women with PCOS when compared with control group. Also there was a significant elevation in serum level of LH ,Testosterone , Prolactin and decrease in serum FSH in PCOS patients when compared to control group. Additionally, serum ghrelin decreased and serum leptin level increased significantly in women with PCOS compared to controls in all age and BMI groups. CONCLUSION The significant decrease in ghrelin and increased in leptin in PCOS patients than in controls indicated that they are at high risk for metabolic syndrome development.

Abstract
Introduction: High prevalence of gynecological conditions in women of Middle Eastern origin is reported, likely due to regional risk factors and mediators. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to investigate the prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and adenomyosis in women of Middle Eastern origin. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Global Health, and Google Scholar databases were searched from database inception until 14 February 2021 to identify relevant studies. Peer-reviewed research articles that reported the prevalence of PCOS, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and adenomyosis in the Middle Eastern population were written in English or Arabic. The primary outcome was the estimated pooled prevalence of PCOS, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and adenomyosis in the Middle Eastern populations. The secondary outcome was to assess the evidence in the data for the presence of heterogeneity, by conducting subtype-pooled analysis of prevalence estimates of the conditions. Total weighted prevalence was calculated via Freeman-Tukey arcsine transformation and heterogeneity through the I 2 statistic. Quality control was performed using GRADE criteria. Results: A total of 47 studies, 26 on PCOS, 12 on endometriosis, eight on uterine fibroids, and seven on adenomyosis, were included. The pooled prevalence of PCOS diagnosed according to the NIH criteria was 8.9% (95% CI: 6.5-11.7; prevalence range: 4.0-27.6%), with a higher prevalence from the Gulf Arab states (18.8%, 95% CI: 9.5-30.3; range: 12.1-27.6%). According to the Rotterdam criteria, the pooled prevalence of PCOS was 11.9% (95% CI: 7.1-17.7; range: 3.4-19.9%) with studies limited to the Persian and Levant regions. Endometriosis was diagnosed in 12.9% (95% CI: 4.2-25.4; range: 4.2-21.0%) of women undergoing laparoscopy, for any indication. Uterine fibroid and adenomyosis prevalence of women was 30.6% (95% CI: 24.9-36.7; range: 18.5-42.6%) and 30.8% (95% CI: 27.1-34.6, range: 25.6-37.7%), respectively. Heterogeneity was present between studies due to statistical and methodological inconsistencies between studies, and quality of evidence was low due to sample size and unrepresentative participant selection. Conclusion: This is the first review that has reported the prevalence of gynecological diseases in the Middle Eastern population, suggesting that gynecological morbidity is a public health concern. Due to the health disparities in women, further research is required to understand the relative roles of environmental and genetic factors in the region to serve as a benchmark for evaluation and comparative purposes with other populations.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the body composition and anthropometric profile of infertile women who have been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and to investigate the incidence of PCOS and to examine body fat composition as a risk factor for this disease. Methods This hospital-based case controlled study was conducted on a cohort of 132 patients with and without PCOS. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to record body composition parameters, such as total body fat, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, skeletal muscle composition and their distribution in the trunk, legs and arms, as well as blood pressure. Anthropometric profile parameters, including body mass index (BMI), ideal body weight (IBW), waist circumference, hip circumference and waist-to-hip ratio, were also recorded. Results The mean age of incidence of PCOS was 29.74 ± 3.32 years (OR 1.417), and most of the cohort exhibited high to very high visceral fat with significant correlation (p < 0.001). Total body fat distribution and whole, trunk, arm and leg subcutaneous fat were significantly higher in patients with PCOS (p < 0.001). The mean BMI, waist and hip circumference of the PCOS group were 28.2 ± 6.08, 97.44 ± 15.11 cm and 109.22 ± 17.39 cm, respectively. The results also indicated significant increases in DP and MAP (OR 1.528) in patients with PCOS compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Conclusion This study exhibits higher levels of BMI, body fat distribution, waist and hip circumference, diastolic and mean blood pressure, visceral fat, and a disproportionate increase in the level of global fat and its distribution.
