Effect of Molecular Weight and Chemical Structure of Terminal Groups on the Properties of Porous Hollow Fiber Polysulfone Membranes. MEMBRANES 2023; 13:412. Abstract
For the first time, polysulfones (PSFs) were synthesized with chlorine and hydroxyl terminal groups and studied for the task of producing porous hollow fiber membranes. The synthesis was carried out in dimethylacetamide (DMAc) at various excesses of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (Bisphenol A) and 4,4'-dichlorodiphenylsulfone, as well as at an equimolar ratio of monomers in various aprotic solvents. The synthesized polymers were studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and the coagulation values of 2 wt.% PSF polymer solutions in N-methyl-2-pyrollidone were determined. According to GPC data, PSFs were obtained in a wide range of molecular weights Mw from 22 to 128 kg/mol. NMR analysis confirmed the presence of terminal groups of a certain type in accordance with the use of the corresponding monomer excess in the synthesis process. Based on the obtained results on the dynamic viscosity of dope solutions, promising samples of the synthesized PSF were selected to produce porous hollow fiber membranes. The selected polymers had predominantly -OH terminal groups and their molecular weight was in the range of 55-79 kg/mol. It was found that porous hollow fiber membrane from PSF with Mw 65 kg/mol (synthesized in DMAc with an excess of Bisphenol A 1%) has a high helium permeability of 45 m3/m2∙h∙bar and selectivity α (He/N2) = 2.3. This membrane is a good candidate to be used as a porous support for thin-film composite hollow fiber membrane fabrication.

Preparation and performance of poly(4-vinylpyridine)-b-polysulfone-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) triblock copolymer/polysulfone blend membrane for separation of palladium (II) from electroplating wastewaters. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2020; 384:121277. Abstract
In order to separate palladium (II) from electroplating wastewaters, poly(4-vinylpyridine)-b-polysulfone-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP-PSF-P4VP) / polysulfone blend membranes were fabricated by combining non-solvent induced phase separation, surface segregation and self-assembly of block copolymer. Amphiphilic P4VP-PSF-P4VP was used as the membrane base material, which was synthesized by introducing the functional monomer of 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP), and polysulfone as the additive. Effects of blend ratio and 4-VP content on membrane performance, such as structure, hydrophilicity, pure water flux and adsorption capacity towards Pd (II), were investigated. The membranes exhibited dense surface structure and low roughness due to surface segregation and self-assembly of P4VP-PSF-P4VP. The presence of 4-VP increased hydrophilicity and water flux of membrane, and it also provided good adsorption capacity towards Pd (II) (up to 103.1 ± 5.15 mg/g). Further, the membrane was used to separate Pd (II) from simulated wastewaters during filtration. It showed good rejection ability and high selectivity towards Pd (II) in co-existence of Cu (II) and Ni (II), and selectivity coefficients of Pd/Cu and Pd/Ni are 41.9 ± 1.88 and 97.8 ± 4.32, respectively. In filtration process of actual electroplating wastewater, the membrane also exhibited excellent rejection performance (Pd (II) rejection reached up to 96.8 ± 2.71%). Perhaps it is suitable for future practice applications.

Abstract
Abstract
Compared with current conventional technologies, oxygen/nitrogen (O2/N2) separation using membrane offers numerous advantages, especially in terms of energy consumption, footprint, and capital cost. However, low product purity still becomes the major challenge for commercialization of membrane-based technologies. Therefore, numerous studies on membrane development have been conducted to improve both membrane properties and separation performance. Various materials have been developed to obtain membranes with high O2 permeability and high O2/N2 selectivity, including polymer, inorganic, and polymer-inorganic composite materials. The results showed that most of the polymer membranes are suitable for production of low to moderate purity O2 and for production of high-purity N2. Meanwhile, perovskite membrane can be used to produce a high-purity oxygen. Furthermore, the developments of O2/N2 separation using membrane broaden the applications of oxygen enrichment for oxy-combustion, gasification, desulfurization, and intensification of air oxidation reactions, while nitrogen enrichment is also important for manufacturing pressure-sensitive adhesive and storing and handling free-radical polymerization monomers.
