Abstract
Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-methoxypolyethylene glycols (PDMS-b-mPEG) were synthesized by Steglich esterification. The high-permeable membrane (PSf/PDMS-b-mPEG) was prepared by using PDMS-b-mPEG as additives. The successful synthesis of PDMS-b-mPEG was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images show that the distribution of finger-like macroporous and sponge-like macroporous can be modulated by controlling the ratio of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic components of additives. The distribution of additives and membrane wettability are validated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and water contact angle test. The permeability of the blended membrane, especially for the membrane PSf/PDMS-b-mPEG1900 (M3), was remarkably improved. The water permeability of M3 (239.4 L/m2·h·bar) was 6.6 times that of the unblended membrane M0 (42.5 L/m2·h·bar). The findings of protein BSA filtration show that the flux recovery ratio of M3 is 89.2% at a BSA retention rate of about 80%, which demonstrates that the polysulfone membranes blended with PDMS-b-mPEG have excellent antifouling performance and extraordinary permeability.

Abstract
Synthesis of cationic polyacrylamides (CPAMs) by introducing cationic polymer precursors followed by chain extension of acrylamide (AM) homopolymer blocks via RAFT polymerization is a promising approach for engineering high-performance CPAMs. However, the aqueous solution polymerization of AM usually leads to high viscosity, thus limiting the solid content in the polymerization system. Herein a novel approach is introduced that uses a random copolymer of AM and methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) as a macro RAFT chain transfer agent (mCTA) and stabilizer for aqueous RAFT dispersion polymerization of AM. The AM/DMC random copolymers synthesized by RAFT solution polymerization, having narrow dispersities (Đ s) at different molecular weights and cationic degrees (C s), could serve as the mCTA, which was confirmed by mCTA chain extension in aqueous solution polymerization of AM under different C s, solid contents, AM addition contents, extended PAM block lengths, and mCTA chain lengths. The block CPAMs had a Đ value of less than 1.2. A model was developed using the method of moments with consideration of the diffusion control effect, for further understanding the chain extension kinetics. Predicted polymerization kinetics provided an accurate fit of the experimental data. The AM/DMC random copolymers were further used for aqueous RAFT dispersion polymerization of AM under different polymerization temperatures, C s, and mCTA chain lengths. The resulting products had a milky appearance, and the block copolymers had Đ s of less than 1.3. Higher C s and longer chain lengths on mCTAs were beneficial for stabilizing the polymerization systems and produced smaller particle sizes and less particle aggregation. The products remained stable at room temperature storage for more than a month. The results indicate that aqueous RAFT dispersion polymerization using random copolymers of AM and DMC at moderate cationic degrees as a stabilizer and mCTA is a suitable approach for synthesizing CPAM block precursors at an elevated solid content.

Abstract
To generate polyethersulfone membranes with a biocatalytically active surface, pancreatin was covalently immobilized. Pancreatin is a mixture of digestive enzymes such as protease, lipase, and amylase. The resulting membranes exhibit self-cleaning properties after “switching on” the respective enzyme by adjusting pH and temperature. Thus, the membrane surface can actively degrade a fouling layer on its surface and regain initial permeability. Fouling tests with solutions of protein, oil, and mixtures of both, were performed, and the membrane’s ability to self-clean the fouled surface was characterized. Membrane characterization was conducted by investigation of the immobilized enzyme concentration, enzyme activity, water permeation flux, fouling tests, porosimetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract
Polymer membranes have been modified with hyperbranched polymers with the aim to generate a high density of hydrophilic functional groups at the membrane surface. For this purpose hyperbranched polymers containing amino, alcohol, and carboxylic acid end groups were used for membrane modification, respectively. Thus, surface potential and charges were changed significantly to result in attractive or repulsive interactions towards three different proteins (albumin, lysozyme, myoglobin) that were used to indicate membrane fouling properties. Our studies demonstrated that hydrophilization alone is not effective for avoiding membrane fouling when charged proteins are present. In contrast, electrostatic repulsion seems to be a general key factor.

Zwitterionic polymer functionalization of polysulfone membrane with improved antifouling property and blood compatibility by combination of ATRP and click chemistry. Acta Biomater 2016; 40:162-171. Abstract
The chemical compositions are very important for designing blood-contacting membranes with good antifouling property and blood compatibility. In this study, we propose a method combining ATRP and click chemistry to introduce zwitterionic polymer of poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA), negatively charged polymers of poly(sodium methacrylate) (PNaMAA) and/or poly(sodium p-styrene sulfonate) (PNaSS), to improve the antifouling property and blood compatibility of polysulfone (PSf) membranes. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and water contact angle results confirmed the successful grafting of the functional polymers. The antifouling property and blood compatibility of the modified membranes were systematically investigated. The zwitterionic polymer (PSBMA) grafted membranes showed good resistance to protein adsorption and bacterial adhesion; the negatively charged polymer (PNaSS or PNaMAA) grafted membranes showed improved blood compatibility, especially the anticoagulant property. Moreover, the PSBMA/PNaMAA modified membrane showed both antifouling property and anticoagulant property, and exhibited a synergistic effect in inhibiting blood coagulation. The functionalization of membrane surfaces by a combination of ATRP and click chemistry is demonstrated as an effective route to improve the antifouling property and blood compatibility of membranes in blood-contact.
