Abstract
In this study, an oxidation label for the quantitative identification of aldehydes was developed using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the carrier polymer, blueberry anthocyanin (BA) as the chromogenic agent, and hydroxylamine sulfate (HAS) as the coupling agent. Electrospinning technology was employed in this process. Based on aldehyde-specific recognition, the PVA-BA-HAS oxidation label displayed noticeable changes from white to rose pink corresponding to varying degrees of oxidation in processed meat products, with a detection time of less than 1 min. The label showed exceptional morphology and performance, including hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and biocompatibility, etc. Moreover, the assessment of oxidation levels obtained from the PVA-BA-HAS labels were in good agreement with the data measured through POV analysis, confirming practicability of the oxidation label. These results indicated that the prepared oxidation label could be utilized for real-time monitoring of oxidation levels with high accuracy and efficiency, expanding new possibilities for meat quality grading.

Abstract
Oil spills and industrial oily wastewater pose serious threats to the environment. A series of modified membranes with special wettability have been widely used for separating oil/water mixtures and emulsions. However, these membranes still face challenges such as the detachment of the modified coatings and membrane fouling. Here, a freestanding biobased superwetting nanofibrous membrane for oil/water mixture separation was electrospun with chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as precursors, followed by chemical cross-linking and in situ growth of β-FeOOH nanoparticles on the surface. Moreover, by precisely controlling both the cross-linking time between CS and PVA and the growth time of β-FeOOH nanoparticles, the nanosize apertures and rough structures on the membrane surface can be regulated toward a wide range of oil/water separation scenarios. As a result, FeOOH@CS/PVA-4-12 demonstrated superwettability, with a water contact angle of 9.5 ± 3.5° in air and an underwater-oil contact angle above 140°, achieving a separation efficiency of 98.5% and a water permeation flux of 2350 L·m-2·h-1 for n-heptane/water mixtures. The membrane FeOOH@CS/PVA-24-24 exhibited exceptional oil-in-water emulsion separation performance with a separation efficiency of up to 99.9% for water/n-heptane emulsions. Additionally, the membrane exhibited remarkable antifouling properties, attributed to its superwetting surface and the photocatalytic ability of β-FeOOH nanoparticles. After five photocatalytic self-cleaning cycles, the water permeation flux and separation efficiency remained almost unchanged, demonstrating its great potential for practical application.

Abstract
The alkaline solid-state electrolytes have received widespread attention for their good safety and electrochemical stability. However, they still suffer from low conductivity and poor mechanical properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of double-network featured hydroxide-conductive membranes fabricated by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) as the double-skeletons. Then, we implanted quaternary ammonium salt guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride (GG) as the OH- conductor for high-performance electrochemical devices. By virtue of the unique stripe-like structure shared from the double skeleton with a high degree of compatibility and stronger hydrogen bond interactions, the polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan-guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride (PCG) solid-state electrolytes achieved optimal thermal stability (> 300 °C), mechanical property (∼ 34.15 MPa), dimensional stability (at any bending angle), and high ionic conductivity (13 mS cm-1) and ion mobility number (tion ∼ 0.90) compared with chitosan-guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride (CG) and polyvinyl alcohol-guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride (PG) electrolyte membrane. As a proof-of-concept application, the "sandwich"-type zinc-air battery (ZAB) assembled using PCG membrane as the electrolyte realized a high open-circuit voltage (1.39 V) and an excellent power density (128 mW cm-2). Notably, in addition to its long-term cycle life (30 h, 2 mA cm-2) and stable discharge plateau (12 h, 5 mA cm-2), it could even enable a flexible ZAB (F-ZAB) to readily power light-emitting diodes (LED) at any bending angle. These merits afford the PCG membrane a promising electrolyte for improving the performance of solid-state batteries.

Abstract
Ion transportation via the mixed mechanisms of hydrogels underpins ultrafast biological signal transmission in nature, and its application to the rapid and sensitive sensing detection of human specific ions is of great interest for the field of medical science. However, current research efforts are still unable to achieve transmission results that are comparable to those of bioelectric signals. Herein, 3D interconnected nanochannels based on poly(pyrrole-co-dopamine)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (P(Py-co-DA)/PVA) supernetwork conductive hydrogels are designed and fabricated as stimuli-responsive structures for K+ ions. Distinct from conventional configurations, which exhibit rapid electron transfer and permeability to biosubstrates, interconnected nanofluidic nanochannels collaborated with the P(Py-co-DA) conductive polymer in the supernetwork conductive hydrogel significantly improve conductivity (88.3 mS/cm), ion transport time (0.1 s), and ion sensitivity (74.6 mV/dec). The faster ion response time is attributed to the synergism of excellent conductivity originating from the P(Py-co-DA) polymer and the electronic effect in the interconnected nanofluidic channels. Furthermore, the supernetwork conductive hydrogel demonstrates K+ ion selectivity relative to other cations in biofluids such as Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+. The DFT calculation indicates that the small solvation energy and low chemical transfer resistance are the main reasons for the excellent K+ ion selectivity. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulations further support these experimental results. Consequently, the P(Py-co-DA)/PVA supernetwork conductive hydrogels enriched with the 3D interconnected nanofluidic channels developed in this work possess excellent sensing of K+ ions. This strategy provides great insight into efficient ion sensing in traditional biomedical sensing that has not been explored by previous researchers.

Abstract
Membrane technology is an efficient way to purify water, but it generates non-biodegradable biohazardous waste. This waste ends up in landfills, incinerators, or microplastics, threatening the environment. To address this, research is being conducted to develop compostable alternatives that are sustainable and ecofriendly. Bioplastics, which are expected to capture 40% of the market share by 2030, represent one such alternative. This review examines the feasibility of using synthetic biodegradable materials beyond cellulose and chitosan for water treatment, considering cost, carbon footprint, and stability in mechanical, thermal, and chemical environments. Although biodegradable membranes have the potential to close the recycling loop, challenges such as brittleness and water stability limit their use in membrane applications. The review suggests approaches to tackle these issues and highlights recent advances in the field of biodegradable membranes for water purification. The end-of-life perspective of these materials is also discussed, as their recyclability and compostability are critical factors in reducing the environmental impact of membrane technology. This review underscores the need to develop sustainable alternatives to conventional membrane materials and suggests that biodegradable membranes have great potential to address this challenge.

Abstract
The scope of this research aims at merging a new deep eutectic mixture (DES) into a biopolymer-based membrane for a pervaporation application in dehydrating ethanol. Herein, an L-proline:xylitol (at 5:1) eutectic mixture was successfully synthesized and blended with chitosan (CS). A complete characterization of the hybrid membranes, in terms of morphology, solvent uptake, and hydrophilicity, has been conducted. As part of their applicability, the blended membranes were assayed for their ability to separate water from ethanolic solutions by means of pervaporation. At the highest temperature (50 °C), a water permeation of ca. 0.46 kg m-2 h-1 was acquired, representing a higher permeation than the pristine CS membranes (ca. 0.37 kg m-2 h-1). Therefore, CS membranes demonstrated an enhanced water permeation thanks to their blending with the hydrophilic L-proline:xylitol agent, making these membranes a good candidate for other separations containing polar solvents.

Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) pervaporation (PV) membranes have been extensively studied in the field of ethanol dehydration. The incorporation of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials into the PVA matrix can greatly improve the hydrophilicity of the PVA polymer matrix, thereby enhancing its PV performance. In this work, self-made MXene (Ti3C2Tx-based) nanosheets were dispersed in the PVA polymer matrix, and the composite membranes were fabricated by homemade ultrasonic spraying equipment with poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) electrospun nanofibrous membrane as support. Due to the gentle coating of ultrasonic spraying and following continuous steps of drying and thermal crosslinking, a thin (~1.5 μm), homogenous and defect-free PVA-based separation layer was fabricated on the PTFE support. The prepared rolls of the PVA composite membranes were investigated systematically. The PV performance of the membrane was significantly improved by increasing the solubility and diffusion rate of the membranes to the water molecules through the hydrophilic channels constructed by the MXene nanosheets in the membrane matrix. The water flux and separation factor of the PVA/MXene mixed matrix membrane (MMM) were dramatically increased to 1.21 kg·m-2·h-1 and 1126.8, respectively. With high mechanical strength and structural stability, the prepared PGM-0 membrane suffered 300 h of the PV test without any performance degradation. Considering the promising results, it is likely that the membrane would improve the efficiency of the PV process and reduce energy consumption in the ethanol dehydration.

Abstract
Chitosan-capped silver nanoparticle (CS-capped AgNPs)-incorporated Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hybrid membranes were prepared by a solution-casting technique for ethanol dehydration via pervaporation. The incorporation of CS-capped AgNPs into the PVA membrane and its influence on membrane properties and pervaporation-separation process of azeotropic water/ethanol mixture was studied. The addition of CS-capped AgNPs into the PVA membrane reduced the crystallinity, thereby increasing the hydrophilicity and swelling degree of the hybrid membrane, supported by contact angle (CA) analyzer and swelling degree experiments, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) demonstrated the formation of polymeric matrix between PVA and CS and also the binding of AgNPs onto the functional group of CS and PVA, which was also reflected in the microstructure images demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by 2θ angle of wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The effect of CS-capped AgNPs on the thermal stability of the hybrid membrane was demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). These characteristics of the hybrid membrane positively impact the efficiency of the dehydration of ethanol, as indicated by pervaporation experiments. The best performances in total flux (12.40 ± 0.20 × 10−2 kg/m2 h) and selectivity (3612.33 ± 6.03) at 30 °C were shown for CS-capped AgNPs PVA hybrid membrane containing 2 wt.% CS-capped AgNPs (M-4). This confirms that the developed hybrid membranes can be efficiently used to separate water from azeotropic aqueous ethanol.

Abstract
With the rapid development of flexible and wearable electronic devices, research on high-sensitivity strain sensors has been attracting much attention. Here, glutaraldehyde is used as a cross-linking reagent to precross-link poly(vinyl alcohol); then FeCl3·6H2O is added into the precross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) to obtain composite films of FeCl3@PVA after gelatinization and freeze drying. Elastic conductive films of polypyrrole@poly(vinyl alcohol) (PPy@PVA) are prepared by immersing FeCl3@PVA into a solution of pyrrole in acetonitrile and water to complete the polymerization in situ. The effects of the concentrations of glutaraldehyde and FeCl3·6H2O on the film's structure and properties have been studied in detail; the results show that the strain sensor prepared from the optimized film has excellent stretchability (strain up to 309.5%), mechanical property (tensile strength of 32.8 MPa), and relatively high sensitivity (gauge factor can reach 5.07 under 1.0% strain). It can be used to detect various tiny physiological signals, for example, detecting the number of pulse beats, bending of the knuckles at different frequencies, and recognizing the pronunciation of different words by vocal cord vibration. These good properties mean that this kind of PPy@PVA strain sensor has great application prospects in physiological monitoring.

Abstract
In this paper, PVA/Ti3C2T x mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by mixing the synthesized Ti3C2T x with the PVA matrix, and the pervaporation (PV) performance of the ethanol-water binary system was tested. The morphology, structural properties, and surface characteristics of the membranes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, degree of swelling, and water contact angle. The PVA/Ti3C2T x MMMs exhibit excellent compatibility and swelling resistance. Moreover the effects of the Ti3C2T x filling level, feed concentration, and operating temperature on the ethanol dehydration performance were systematically studied. The results demonstrated that the separation factor of PVA/Ti3C2T x MMMs was significantly increased because of Ti3C2T x promoting the cross-linking density of the membrane. Specifically, the membrane showed the best PV performance when Ti3C2T x loading was 3.0 wt %, achieving a separation factor of 2585 and a suitable total flux of 0.074 kg/m2 h for separating 93 wt % ethanol solution at 37 °C.

Abstract
Abstract
Today, the need of replacing synthetic polymers in the membrane preparation for diverse pervaporation (PV) applications has been recognized collectively and scientifically. Chitosan (CS), a bio-polymer, has been studied and proposed to achieve this goal especially in specific azeotropic water-organic, organic-water, and organic-organic separations, as well as in assisting specific processes (e.g. seawater desalination and chemical reactions). Different concepts of CS-based membranes have been developed, which include material blending and composite and mixed matrix membranes which have been tested for different separations. Hereby, the goal of this review is to provide a critical overview of the ongoing CS-based membrane developments, paying a special attention to the most relevant findings and results in the field. Furthermore, future trends of CS-based membranes in PV technology are presented, as well as concluding remarks and suggested strategies for the new scientist in the field.

Abstract
Several concepts of membranes have emerged, aiming at the enhancement of separation performance, as well as some other physicochemical properties, of the existing membrane materials. One of these concepts is the well-known mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which combine the features of inorganic (e.g., zeolites, metal–organic frameworks, graphene, and carbon-based materials) and polymeric (e.g., polyimides, polymers of intrinsic microporosity, polysulfone, and cellulose acetate) materials. To date, it is likely that such a concept has been widely explored and developed toward low-permeability polyimides for gas separation, such as oxydianiline (ODA), tetracarboxylic dianhydride–diaminophenylindane (BTDA-DAPI), m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA), and hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA). When dealing with the gas separation performance of polyimide-based MMMs, these membranes tend to display some deficiency according to the poor polyimide–filler compatibility, which has promoted the tuning of chemical properties of those filling materials. This approach has indeed enhanced the polymer–filler interfaces, providing synergic MMMs with superior gas separation performance. Herein, the goal of this review paper is to give a critical overview of the current insights in fabricating MMMs based on chemically modified filling nanomaterials and low-permeability polyimides for selective gas separation. Special interest has been paid to the chemical modification protocols of the fillers (including good filler dispersion) and thus the relevant experimental results provoked by such approaches. Moreover, some principles, as well as the main drawbacks, occurring during the MMM preparation are also given.

Abstract
This paper aims to develop novel hydrophilic ionic liquid membranes using pervaporation for the recovery of biobutanol. Multiple polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membranes based on three commercial ionic liquids with different loading were prepared for various experimental trials. The ionic liquids selected for the study include tributyl (tetradecyl) phosphonium chloride ([TBTDP][Cl]), tetrabutyl phosphonium bromide ([TBP][Br]) and tributyl methyl phosphonium methylsulphate ([TBMP][MS]). The synthesized membranes were characterized and tested in a custom-built pervaporation set-up. All ionic liquid membranes showed better results with total flux of 1.58 kg/m2h, 1.43 kg/m2h, 1.38 kg/m2h at 30% loading of [TBP][Br], [TBMP][MS] and [TBTDP][Cl] respectively. The comparison of ionic liquid membranes revealed that by incorporating [TBMP]MS to PVA matrix resulted in a maximum separation factor of 147 at 30 wt% loading combined with a relatively higher total flux of 1.43 kg/m2h. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also carried out to evaluate the experimental observations along with theoretical studies. The improved permeation properties make these phosphonium based ionic liquid a promising additive in PVA matrix for butanol-water separation under varying temperature conditions.

Abstract
Although poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes are widely used in solvent dehydration by pervaporation, the separation factor is rather limited. Considering this, novel PVA mixed matrix membranes with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were prepared. poly(acrylonitrile) ultrafiltration (PAN) membrane was used as support layer. The PVA/GO composite membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and water contact angle. We also explored the pervaporation performance of the membrane for ethanol dehydration. GO slightly improves the thermal stability and crystallinity of the composite membranes. In addition, the hydrophilicity of the composite membranes is weakened after GO addition, but the crosslinking degree is increased, resulting a significant increase in the separation factor and a certain decrease in the total flux. With the amount of GO addition increases, the total flux of the PVA/GO composite membrane decreases, while the separation factor increases first and then decreases, and the preferred amount of GO addition is 2.0 wt%. Especially, the separation factor of the composite membranes with 2.0 wt% GO addition could reach 3 059, which is 16 times higher than PVA membranes, with the corresponding permeability flux is 145 g m−2 h−1. The separation factor of the composite GOP-2.0 membranes could reach 3 059, which is 16 times higher than PVA membranes.![]()
