A novel smart membrane with ion-recognizable nanogels as gates on interconnected pores for simple and rapid detection of trace lead(II) ions in water

Perfect confinement of crown ethers in MOF membrane for complete dehydration and fast transport of monovalent ions

Fast transport of monovalent ions is imperative in selective monovalent ion separation based on membranes. Here, we report the in situ growth of crown ether@UiO-66 membranes at a mild condition, where dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) or dibenzo-15-crown-5 is perfectly confined in the UiO-66 cavity. Crown ether@UiO-66 membranes exhibit enhanced monovalent ion transport rates and mono-/divalent ion selectivity, due to the combination of size sieving and interaction screening effects toward the complete monovalent ion dehydration. Specifically, the DB18C6@UiO-66 membrane shows a permeation rate (e.g., K+) of 1.2 mol per square meter per hour and a mono-/divalent ion selectivity (e.g., K+/Mg2+) of 57. Theoretical calculations and simulations illustrate that, presumably, ions are completely dehydrated while transporting through the DB18C6@UiO-66 cavity with a lower energy barrier than that of the UiO-66 cavity. This work provides a strategy to develop efficient ion separation membranes via integrating size sieving and interaction screening and to illuminate the effect of ion dehydration on fast ion transport.

Advanced stimuli-responsive membranes for smart separation

Membranes have been extensively studied and applied in various fields owing to their high energy efficiency and small environmental impact. Further conferring membranes with stimuli responsiveness can allow them to dynamically tune their pore structure and/or surface properties for efficient separation performance. This review summarizes and discusses important developments and achievements in stimuli-responsive membranes. The most commonly utilized stimuli, including light, pH, temperature, ions, and electric and magnetic fields, are discussed in detail. Special attention is given to stimuli-responsive control of membrane pore structure (pore size and porosity/connectivity) and surface properties (wettability, surface topology, and surface charge), from the perspective of determining the appropriate membrane properties and microstructures. This review also focuses on strategies to prepare stimuli-responsive membranes, including blending, casting, polymerization, self-assembly, and electrospinning. Smart applications for separations are also reviewed as well as a discussion of remaining challenges and future prospects in this exciting field. This review offers critical insights for the membrane and broader materials science communities regarding the on-demand and dynamic control of membrane structures and properties. We hope that this review will inspire the design of novel stimuli-responsive membranes to promote sustainable development and make progress toward commercialization.

Designable Micro-/Nano-Structured Smart Polymeric Materials

Smart polymeric materials with dynamically tunable physico-chemical characteristics in response to changes of environmental stimuli, have received considerable attention in myriad fields. The diverse combination of their micro-/nano-structural and molecular designs creates promising and exciting opportunities for exploiting advanced smart polymeric materials. Engineering micro-/nano-structures into smart polymeric materials with elaborate molecular design enables intricate coordination between their structures and molecular-level response to cooperatively realize smart functions for practical applications. In this review, recent progresses of smart polymeric materials that combine micro-/nano-structures and molecular design to achieve designed advanced functions are highlighted. Smart hydrogels, gating membranes, gratings, milli-particles, micro-particles and microvalves are employed as typical examples to introduce their design and fabrication strategies. Meanwhile, the key roles of interplay between their micro-/nano-structures and responsive properties to realize the desired functions for their applications are emphasized. Finally, perspectives on the current challenges and opportunities of micro-/nano-structured smart polymeric materials for their future development are presented.

Natural and Engineered Nanomaterials for the Identification of Heavy Metal Ions—A Review

In recent years, there has been much interest in developing advanced and innovative approaches for sensing applications in various fields, including agriculture and environmental remediation. The development of novel sensors for detecting heavy metals using nanomaterials has emerged as a rapidly developing research area due to its high availability and sustainability. This review emphasized the naturally derived and engineered nanomaterials that have the potential to be applied as sensing reagents to interact with metal ions or as reducing and stabilizing agents to synthesize metallic nanoparticles for the detection of heavy metal ions. This review also focused on the recent advancement of nanotechnology-based detection methods using naturally derived and engineered materials, with a summary of their sensitivity and selectivity towards heavy metals. This review paper covers the pros and cons of sensing applications with recent research published from 2015 to 2022.

A novel chemosensor for sensitive and facile detection of strontium ions based on ion-imprinted hydrogels modified with guanosine derivatives

A novel chemosensor is developed for the sensitive and facile detection of trace strontium ions (Sr²⁺) based on the ion-imprinted hydrogels. With Sr²⁺ as the templates, the ion-imprinted hydrogels are synthesized by copolymerizing the ion-responsive units 5'-O-acryloyl-2',3'-O-isopropylidene guanosine (APG) and the thermo-responsive units N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM). In the presence of Sr²⁺, APG units can self-assemble to form planar G-quartets via the complexation with Sr²⁺, which are introduced into the gel network during polymerization. Then Sr²⁺ templates can be removed by multiple repeated washing. When re-exposed to Sr²⁺, the relaxed G-quartets can recognize Sr²⁺, leading to the weakening of electrostatic repulsion between the four oxygen atoms in the G-quartets and inducing the shrinkage of the hydrogels. In this work, the Sr²⁺-imprinted chemosensors are designed as the grating systems for detecting trace Sr²⁺. Based on the array of hydrogel strings synthesized on a nano-scale, the smart grating systems thus constructed can convert and amplify the Sr²⁺ concentration signals to the easily-measurable optical signals. With the Sr²⁺-imprinted hydrogel gratings, trace Sr²⁺ (10^-11 M) in an aqueous solution can be detected sensitively. Moreover, the proposed Sr²⁺-imprinted chemosensors can be integrated with other smart systems for developing various detectors with high performance.

A Novel Generation of Polysulfone/Crown Ether-Functionalized Reduced Graphene Oxide Membranes with Potential Applications in Hemodialysis

Heavy metal poisoning is a rare health condition caused by the accumulation of toxic metal ions in the soft tissues of the human body that can be life threatening if left untreated. In the case of severe intoxications, hemodialysis is the most effective method for a rapid clearance of the metal ions from the bloodstream, therefore, the development of hemodialysis membranes with superior metal ions retention ability is of great research interest. In the present study, synthetic polysulfone membranes were modified with reduced graphene oxide functionalized with crown ether, an organic compound with high metal ions complexation capacity. The physico-chemical characteristics of the composite membranes were determined by FT-IR, Raman, XPS and SEM analysis while their efficiency in retaining metal ions was evaluated via ICP-MS analysis. The obtained results showed that the thermal stability of reduced graphene oxide was improved after functionalization with crown ether and that the presence of the carbonaceous filler influenced the membranes morphology in terms of pore dimensions and membrane thickness. Moreover, the ability of Cu2+ ions retention from synthetic feed solution was up to three times higher in the case of the composite membranes compared to the neat ones.

Enhanced Specific Mechanism of Separation by Polymeric Membrane Modification-A Short Review

Membrane technologies have found a significant application in separation processes in an exceeding range of industrial fields. The crucial part that is decided regarding the efficiency and effectivity of separation is the type of membrane. The membranes deal with separation problems, working under the various mechanisms of transportation of selected species. This review compares significant types of entrapped matter (ions, compounds, and particles) within membrane technology. The ion-exchange membranes, molecularly imprinted membranes, smart membranes, and adsorptive membranes are investigated. Here, we focus on the selective separation through the above types of membranes and detect their preparation methods. Firstly, the explanation of transportation and preparation of each type of membrane evaluated is provided. Next, the working and application phenomena are evaluated. Finally, the review discusses the membrane modification methods and briefly provides differences in the properties that occurred depending on the type of materials used and the modification protocol.

Design of Switchable Enzyme Carriers Based on Stimuli-Responsive Porous Polymer Membranes for Bioapplications

Design of efficient enzyme carriers, where enzymes are conjugated to supports, has become an attractive research avenue. Immobilized enzymes are advantageous for practical applications because of their convenience in handling, ease of separation, and good reusability. However, the main challenge is that these traditional enzyme carriers are unable to regulate the enzymolysis efficiency or to protect the enzymes from proteolytic degradation, which restricts their effectiveness of enzymes in bioapplications. Enlightened by the stimuli-responsive channels in the natural cell membranes, conjugation of the enzymes within flat-sheet stimuli-responsive porous polymer membranes (SR-PPMs) as artificial cell membranes is an efficient strategy for circumventing this challenge. Controlled by the external stimuli, the multifunctional polymer chains, which are incorporated within the membranes and attached to the enzyme, change their structures to defend the enzyme from the external environmental disturbances and degradation by proteinases. Specifically, smart SR-PPM enzyme carriers (SR-PPMECs) not only permit convective substrate transfer through the accessible porous network, dramatically improving enzymolysis efficiency due to the adjustable pore sizes and the confinement effect, but they also act as molecular switches for regulating its permeability and selectivity. In this review, the concept of SR-PPMECs is presented. It covers the latest developments in design strategies of flat-sheet SR-PPFMs, fabrication protocols of SR-PPFMECs, strategies for the regulation of enzymolysis efficiency, and their cutting-edge bioapplications.

Visual detection of trace lead(II) using a forward osmosis-driven device loaded with ion-responsive nanogels

A simple and portable thermometer-type device based on forward osmosis-driven liquid column rising is developed for visual detection of trace Pb²⁺. The device consists of a top indicator tube, a chamber loaded with Pb²⁺-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-benzo-18-crown-6-acrylamide) (PNB) smart nanogels and a bottom semipermeable membrane. Upon the recognition of Pb²⁺, PNB smart nanogels undergo a Pb²⁺-induced hydrophobic to hydrophilic transition, which simultaneously causes the increase of osmotic pressure inside the device. Driven by this osmotic pressure difference, more Pb²⁺ solution flows into the device, causing the rise of the liquid column in the indicator tube, which can be directly observed by naked eyes. The relationship between the change of liquid column height and the Pb²⁺ concentration is investigated for the quantitative detection of Pb²⁺. With the proposed forward osmosis-driven device, trace Pb²⁺ as low as 10^-10 M in aqueous solutions can be detected. This method provides a novel and simple strategy for the visual detection of trace Pb²⁺.

Micro- to Nanoscale Bio-Hybrid Hydrogels Engineered by Ionizing Radiation

Bio-hybrid hydrogels consist of a water-swollen hydrophilic polymer network encapsulating or conjugating single biomolecules, or larger and more complex biological constructs like whole cells. By modulating at least one dimension of the hydrogel system at the micro- or nanoscale, the activity of the biological component can be extremely upgraded with clear advantages for the development of therapeutic or diagnostic micro- and nano-devices. Gamma or e-beam irradiation of polymers allow a good control of the chemistry at the micro-/nanoscale with minimal recourse to toxic reactants and solvents. Another potential advantage is to obtain simultaneous sterilization when the absorbed doses are within the sterilization dose range. This short review will highlight opportunities and challenges of the radiation technologies to produce bio-hybrid nanogels as delivery devices of therapeutic biomolecules to the target cells, tissues, and organs, and to create hydrogel patterns at the nano-length and micro-length scales on surfaces.

Polymerization Reactions and Modifications of Polymers by Ionizing Radiation

Ionizing radiation has become the most effective way to modify natural and synthetic polymers through crosslinking, degradation, and graft polymerization. This review will include an in-depth analysis of radiation chemistry mechanisms and the kinetics of the radiation-induced C-centered free radical, anion, and cation polymerization, and grafting. It also presents sections on radiation modifications of synthetic and natural polymers. For decades, low linear energy transfer (LLET) ionizing radiation, such as gamma rays, X-rays, and up to 10 MeV electron beams, has been the primary tool to produce many products through polymerization reactions. Photons and electrons interaction with polymers display various mechanisms. While the interactions of gamma ray and X-ray photons are mainly through the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, and pair-production, the interactions of the high-energy electrons take place through coulombic interactions. Despite the type of radiation used on materials, photons or high energy electrons, in both cases ions and electrons are produced. The interactions between electrons and monomers takes place within less than a nanosecond. Depending on the dose rate (dose is defined as the absorbed radiation energy per unit mass), the kinetic chain length of the propagation can be controlled, hence allowing for some control over the degree of polymerization. When polymers are submitted to high-energy radiation in the bulk, contrasting behaviors are observed with a dominant effect of cross-linking or chain scission, depending on the chemical nature and physical characteristics of the material. Polymers in solution are subject to indirect effects resulting from the radiolysis of the medium. Likewise, for radiation-induced polymerization, depending on the dose rate, the free radicals generated on polymer chains can undergo various reactions, such as inter/intramolecular combination or inter/intramolecular disproportionation, b-scission. These reactions lead to structural or functional polymer modifications. In the presence of oxygen, playing on irradiation dose-rates, one can favor crosslinking reactions or promotes degradations through oxidations. The competition between the crosslinking reactions of C-centered free radicals and their reactions with oxygen is described through fundamental mechanism formalisms. The fundamentals of polymerization reactions are herein presented to meet industrial needs for various polymer materials produced or degraded by irradiation. Notably, the medical and industrial applications of polymers are endless and thus it is vital to investigate the effects of sterilization dose and dose rate on various polymers and copolymers with different molecular structures and morphologies. The presence or absence of various functional groups, degree of crystallinity, irradiation temperature, etc. all greatly affect the radiation chemistry of the irradiated polymers. Over the past decade, grafting new chemical functionalities on solid polymers by radiation-induced polymerization (also called RIG for Radiation-Induced Grafting) has been widely exploited to develop innovative materials in coherence with actual societal expectations. These novel materials respond not only to health emergencies but also to carbon-free energy needs (e.g., hydrogen fuel cells, piezoelectricity, etc.) and environmental concerns with the development of numerous specific adsorbents of chemical hazards and pollutants. The modification of polymers through RIG is durable as it covalently bonds the functional monomers. As radiation penetration depths can be varied, this technique can be used to modify polymer surface or bulk. The many parameters influencing RIG that control the yield of the grafting process are discussed in this review. These include monomer reactivity, irradiation dose, solvent, presence of inhibitor of homopolymerization, grafting temperature, etc. Today, the general knowledge of RIG can be applied to any solid polymer and may predict, to some extent, the grafting location. A special focus is on how ionizing radiation sources (ion and electron beams, UVs) may be chosen or mixed to combine both solid polymer nanostructuration and RIG. LLET ionizing radiation has also been extensively used to synthesize hydrogel and nanogel for drug delivery systems and other advanced applications. In particular, nanogels can either be produced by radiation-induced polymerization and simultaneous crosslinking of hydrophilic monomers in "nanocompartments", i.e., within the aqueous phase of inverse micelles, or by intramolecular crosslinking of suitable water-soluble polymers. The radiolytically produced oxidizing species from water, •OH radicals, can easily abstract H-atoms from the backbone of the dissolved polymers (or can add to the unsaturated bonds) leading to the formation of C-centered radicals. These C-centered free radicals can undergo two main competitive reactions; intramolecular and intermolecular crosslinking. When produced by electron beam irradiation, higher temperatures, dose rates within the pulse, and pulse repetition rates favour intramolecular crosslinking over intermolecular crosslinking, thus enabling a better control of particle size and size distribution. For other water-soluble biopolymers such as polysaccharides, proteins, DNA and RNA, the abstraction of H atoms or the addition to the unsaturation by •OH can lead to the direct scission of the backbone, double, or single strand breaks of these polymers.

Synthesis of imprinted chitosan/AuNPs/graphene-coated MWCNTs/Nafion film for detection of lead ions

An ultrasensitive electrochemical platform based on ion-imprinted nanocomposites for monitoring Pb²⁺ was proposed for environmental protection and food safety applications.

Photothermal-Responsive Graphene Oxide Membrane with Smart Gates for Water Purification

In this work, photothermal-responsive graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes intercalated by multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by polydopamine (PDA) modification and 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) assembly process. Benefited from the high photothermal conversion ability of PDA and reversible UPy dimer, the permeation flux of the GO-based membrane can be easily modulated with a high gating ratio under near-infrared light switched off and on. Nanochannels created by the intercalation of MWCNTs into GO layers greatly increase water permeation without sacrificing the rejection of dye molecules in water (96.2% for methyl orange, 98.9% for rhodamine B, and 99.7% for Coomassie brilliant blue). The composite membranes also exhibit trade-off between rejection of heavy metal ions (Cu²⁺ and Fe³⁺). Moreover, such GO-based membranes show high pH stabilities, which show great potential in the water purification applications.

Modification of Supramolecular Membranes with 3D Hydrophilic Slide-Rings for the Improvement of Antifouling Properties and Effective Separation

A three-dimensional (3D) strategy for the fabrication of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVAL) membranes with a dynamic surface was developed based on sliding supramolecular polymer brushes (SSPBs). The SSPBs with a 3D hydrophilic structure were introduced into the alkyne-EVAL membrane matrix via an azide-alkyne click coupling reaction. The self-mobile hydrophilic slide-rings in the SSPB provided a proactive exclusion system. This resulted in reduced direct contact of the membrane surface with multiple pollutants such as bovine serum albumin (BSA) and oil droplets. The EVAL-SSPB membrane demonstrated increased surface hydrophilicity, underwater oleophobicity, and antifouling properties. More importantly, the abundant hydrophilic rings in the membrane matrix result in supramolecular assembly and efficient hydrophilic sliding channels. This resulted in a dramatic increase in the water flux [2000 L/(m² h)] while retaining a 96% rejection of BSA and oil/water emulsions. The results of the study indicate that three effects of the cyclodextrins rings, i.e., the hydrophilic effect, the exclusion effect, and the sliding effect, enabled the improved membrane performance. The demonstrated 3D fabrication strategy is versatile, facile, and scalable, which allows for its application to various other membranes. The fabricated materials possess excellent permeability and separation efficiencies, which make them attractive candidates for use as separation membranes with novel functions.
