Abstract
This study focuses on the development of nanofiltration (NF) membranes with enhanced antifouling properties, high flux, and low molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) for the separation of lignin from paper mill wastewater. Using a sol-gel method by dip-coating, alumina hollow fiber membranes were fabricated with an interlayer to reduce surface roughness. The interlayer improved mechanical properties, effectively covering the surface irregularities and allowing for the subsequent application of a thinner functional layer. This approach significantly reduced surface roughness, from 112.6 nm to 62.9 nm, enhancing contamination resistance and lifetime. Characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and water contact angle measurements, confirmed the successful fabrication and enhanced properties of the membranes. The C2T6T3 membrane demonstrated the smallest roughness and the highest flux recovery rate (FRR) of 82.39% after cleaning with a 0.1 M NaOH solution. Performance evaluations showed that the developed membranes maintained high permeability (initial flux of 25.58 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹, decreasing to 14.06 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹ over time), achieved effective lignin rejection (consistently above 80%), and exhibited excellent long-term operational stability over 144 h of operation.

Abstract
This review presents a concise conceptual overview of membranes derived from organic chelating ligands as studied in several works. The authors' approach is from the viewpoint of the classification of membranes by matrix composition. The first part presents composite matrix membranes as a key class of membranes and makes a case for the importance of organic chelating ligands in the formation of inorganic-organic composites. Organic chelating ligands, categorized into network-modifying and network-forming types, are explored in detail in the second part. Four key structural elements, of which organic chelating ligands (as organic modifiers) are one and which also include siloxane networks, transition-metal oxide networks and the polymerization/crosslinking of organic modifiers, form the building blocks of organic chelating ligand-derived inorganic-organic composites. Three and four parts explore microstructural engineering in membranes derived from network-modifying and network-forming ligands, respectively. The final part reviews robust carbon-ceramic composite membranes as important derivatives of inorganic-organic hybrid polymers for selective gas separation under hydrothermal conditions when the proper organic chelating ligand and crosslinking conditions are chosen. This review can serve as inspiration for taking advantage of the wide range of possibilities presented by organic chelating ligands.

Abstract
A method for creating genuine nanopores in high area density on monolayer two-dimensional (2D) metallic oxides has been developed. By use of the strong reduction capability of hydroiodic acid, active metal ions, such as FeIII and CoIII, in 2D oxide nanosheets can be reduced to a divalent charge state (2+). The selective removal of FeO2 and CoO2 metal oxide units from the framework can be tuned to produce pores in a range of 1-4 nm. By monitoring of the redox reaction kinetics, the pore area density can be also tuned from ∼0.9 × 104 to ∼3.3 × 105 μm-2. The universality of this method to produce much smaller pores and higher area density than the previously reported ones has been proven in different oxide nanosheets. To demonstrate their potential applications, ultrasmall metal organic framework particles were grown inside the pores of perforated titania oxide nanosheets. The optimized hybrid film showed ∼100% rejection of methylene blue (MB) from the water. Its water permeance reached 4260 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, which is 1-3 orders of that for reported 2D membranes with good MB rejections.

Abstract
Developing multifunctional, efficient and durable membrane for long-term usage for treating complex oily wastewater is highly desirable but still a challenge due to the severe membrane fouling. Herein, a hierarchical structured superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic nanofibrous with antifouling and visible-light-induced self-cleaning performance was manufactured by a facile combination of electrospun silver/β-cyclodextrin/polyacrylonitrile (Ag/β-CD/PAN) nanofibers and then the in-situ growth of a zinc oxide (ZnO) layer. The formed micro/nano sized hierarchical structure greatly increased the roughness and improved the underwater superoleophobic ability of the membrane. Therefore, the resultant ZnO/Ag/β-CD/PAN membrane displays splendid separation performance for oil/dye/water complex emulsions and high flux recovery (>90%). Meanwhile, the permeation flux of a variety of oil/water emulsions was higher than 619 L m-2h-1 with a separation efficiency above 99.7% under the action of gravity. Furthermore, the as-fabricated membrane exhibits excellent stability towards different harsh conditions (e. g. corrosive solution, high temperature, UV irradiation and ultrasound washing). The robust mechanical and chemical stability, outstanding separation capabilities as well as excellent flux recovery capabilities makes the self-cleaning membrane a good candidate for the remediation of complex oily wastewater.

Recent developments in porous ceramic membranes for wastewater treatment and desalination: A review. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2021; 293:112925. Abstract
The development of membrane technology has proved vital in providing a sustainable and affordable supply of clean water to address the ever-increasing demand. Though liquid separation applications have been still dominated by polymeric membranes, porous ceramic membranes have gained a commercial foothold in microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) applications due to their hydrophilic nature, lower fouling, ease of cleaning, reliable performance, robust performance with harsh feeds, relative insensitivity to temperature and pH, and stable long-term flux. The enrichment of research and development on porous ceramic membranes extends its focus into advanced membrane separation technologies. The latest emerging nanofiltration (NF) and membrane distillation (MD) applications have witnessed special interests in constructing porous membrane with hydrophilic/functional/hydrophobic properties. However, NF and MD are relatively new, and many shortcomings must be addressed to compete with their polymeric counterparts. For the last three years (2018-2020), state-of-the-art literature on porous ceramic membranes has been collected and critically reviewed. This review highlights the efficiency (permeability, selectivity, and antifouling) of hydrophilic porous ceramic membranes in a wide variety of wastewater treatment applications and hydrophobic porous ceramic membranes in membrane distillation-based desalination applications. A significant focus on pores characteristics, pore sieving phenomenon, nano functionalization, and synergic effect on fouling, the hydrophilic porous ceramic membrane has been discussed. In another part of this review, the role of surface hydrophobicity, water contact angle, liquid entry pressure (LEP), thermal properties, surface micro-roughness, etc., has been discussed for different types of hydrophobic porous ceramic membranes -(a) metal-based, (b) silica-based, (c) other ceramics. Also, this review highlights the potential benefits, drawbacks, and limitations of the porous membrane in applications. Moreover, the prospects are emphasized to overcome the challenges in the field.

Gas Permeation Characteristics of TiO 2-ZrO 2-Aromatic Organic Chelating Ligand (aOCL) Composite Membranes. MEMBRANES 2020; 10:membranes10120388. Abstract
Methyl gallate (MG) and ethyl ferulate (EF) with a benzene ring were separately used as aromatic organic chelating ligands (aOCLs) to prepare two versions of TiO2-ZrO2-aOCL composite sols via hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions with titanium(IV) isopropoxide (Ti(OC3H7)4) and zirconium(IV) butoxide (Zr(OC4H9)4). Thermogravimetric and FT-IR analysis of dry gels revealed that aromatic rings were present in the residual organic matter when the gel was fired under nitrogen at 300 °C. In X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, the TiO2-ZrO2 composite material prepared using these two aOCLs showed an amorphous structure with no crystalline peaks for TiO2 and ZrO2. In N2 adsorption/desorption measurements at 77 K, the TiO2-ZrO2 samples using the aOCLs as a template appeared porous with a larger specific surface area than TiO2-ZrO2 without aOCL. TiO2-ZrO2-aOCL composite membranes were prepared by coating and firing TiO2-ZrO2-aOCL sol onto a SiO2 intermediate layer using an α-alumina porous tube as a substrate. Compared with the TiO2-ZrO2 membrane, the TiO2-ZrO2-aOCL membranes had higher gas permselectivity. The TiO2-ZrO2-EF membrane showed a He permeance of 2.69 × 10−6 mol m−2 s−1 Pa−1 with permeance ratios of He/N2 = 10.6 and He/CF4 = 163, while the TiO2-ZrO2-MG membrane revealed a bit less He permeance at 8.56 × 10−7 mol m−2 s−1 Pa−1 with greater permeance ratios of He/N2 = 61.7 and He/CF4 = 209 at 200 °C. A microporous TiO2-ZrO2 amorphous structure was obtained by introducing aOCL. The differences in the side chains of each aOCL could possibly account for the differences in the microporous structures of the resultant TiO2-ZrO2-aOCL membranes.
