Modified Membranes for Redox Flow Batteries-A Review

In this review, the state of the art of modified membranes developed and applied for the improved performance of redox flow batteries (RFBs) is presented and critically discussed. The review begins with an introduction to the energy-storing chemical principles and the potential of using RFBs in the energy transition in industrial and transport-related sectors. Commonly used membrane modification techniques are briefly presented and compared next. The recent progress in applying modified membranes in different RFB chemistries is then critically discussed. The relationship between a given membrane modification strategy, corresponding ex situ properties and their impact on battery performance are outlined. It has been demonstrated that further dedicated studies are necessary in order to develop an optimal modification technique, since a modification generally reduces the crossover of redox-active species but, at the same time, leads to an increase in membrane electrical resistance. The feasibility of using alternative advanced modification methods, similar to those employed in water purification applications, needs yet to be evaluated. Additionally, the long-term stability and durability of the modified membranes during cycling in RFBs still must be investigated. The remaining challenges and potential solutions, as well as promising future perspectives, are finally highlighted.

Engineering Polymeric Nanofluidic Membranes for Efficient Ionic Transport: Biomimetic Design, Material Construction, and Advanced Functionalities

Design elements extracted from biological ion channels guide the engineering of artificial nanofluidic membranes for efficient ionic transport and spawn biomimetic devices with great potential in many cutting-edge areas. In this context, polymeric nanofluidic membranes can be especially attractive because of their inherent flexibility and benign processability, which facilitate massive fabrication and facile device integration for large-scale applications. Herein, the state-of-the-art achievements of polymeric nanofluidic membranes are systematically summarized. Theoretical fundamentals underlying both biological and synthetic ion channels are introduced. The advances of engineering polymeric nanofluidic membranes are then detailed from aspects of structural design, material construction, and chemical functionalization, emphasizing their broad chemical and reticular/topological variety as well as considerable property tunability. After that, this Review expands on examples of evolving these polymeric membranes into macroscopic devices and their potentials in addressing compelling issues in energy conversion and storage systems where efficient ion transport is highly desirable. Finally, a brief outlook on possible future developments in this field is provided.

Trust is good, control is better: a review on monitoring and characterization techniques for flow battery electrolytes

Flow batteries (FBs) currently are one of the most promising large-scale energy storage technologies for energy grids with a large share of renewable electricity generation. Among the main technological challenges for the economic operation of a large-scale battery technology is its calendar lifetime, which ideally has to cover a few decades without significant loss of performance. This requirement can only be met if the key parameters representing the performance losses of the system are continuously monitored and optimized during the operation. Nearly all performance parameters of a FB are related to the two electrolytes as the electrochemical storage media and we therefore focus on them in this review. We first survey the literature on the available characterization methods for the key FB electrolyte parameters. Based on these, we comprehensively review the currently available approaches for assessing the most important electrolyte state variables: the state-of-charge (SOC) and the state-of-health (SOH). We furthermore discuss how monitoring and operation strategies are commonly implemented as online tools to optimize the electrolyte performance and recover lost battery capacity as well as how their automation is realized via battery management systems (BMSs). Our key findings on the current state of this research field are finally highlighted and the potential for further progress is identified.

A Novel State of Charge Estimating Scheme Based on an Air-Gap Fiber Interferometer Sensor for the Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

Real-time and remote monitoring of the state of charge (SOC) of a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is technically desirable for achieving advanced compensation functions of VRFB systems. This paper, for the first time, proposes a novel SOC monitoring scheme based on an air-gap fiber Fabry–Perot interferometer (AGFFPI) sensor for the VRFB. The proposed sensing concept is based on real-time sensing of the refractive index (RI) of the positive electrolyte, which is found closely correlated to the VRFB’s SOC. The proposed SOC estimating scheme using fiber sensor has a number of merits, e.g., being precise, having lightweight, having strong acid resistance, and being easy to incorporate the state-of-the-art fiber communication technology for remote monitoring. It is found that the RI of the positive electrolyte solution exhibits distinct and linear variations in accordance with changes of the VRFB’s SOC value. Using the linear relationship between the electrolyte’s RI and SOC, a real-time SOC monitoring mechanism can be readily realized by the proposed AGFFPI. In this paper, existing SOC detecting methods for VRFB are firstly reviewed. The details concerning the proposed detecting method are then addressed. Typical experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed SOC estimating scheme.
