Abstract
This Comment raises several questions concerning the surface structure concluded in the paper referenced in the title. Specifically, that paper ignores previous experiments and simulations which demonstrate for the same ionic liquids depth-decaying, multilayered surface-normal density profiles rather than the claimed molecular mono- or bi-layers. We demonstrate that the claimed structure does not reproduce the measured X-ray reflectivity, which probes directly the surface-normal density profile. The measured reflectivities are found, however, to be well-reproduced by a multilayered density model. These results, and previous experimental and simulation results, cast severe doubt on the validity of the surface structure claimed in the paper referenced in the title.

Abstract
Molecular dynamics simulations (up to the nanoscale) were performed on the 3-methyl-1-pentylimidazolium ionic liquid cation paired with three anions; chloride, nitrate, and thiocyanate as aqueous mixtures, using the effective fragment potential (EFP) method, a computationally inexpensive way of modeling intermolecular interactions. The simulations provided insight (preferred geometries, radial distribution functions and theoretical proton NMR resonances) into the interactions within the ionic domain and are validated against 1H NMR spectroscopy and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments on 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium. Ionic liquids containing thiocyanate typically resist gelation and form poorly ordered lamellar structures upon mixing with water. Conversely, chloride, a strongly coordinating anion, normally forms strong physical gels and produces well-ordered nanostructures adopting a variety of structural motifs over a very wide range of water compositions. Nitrate is intermediate in character, whereby upon dispersal in water it displays a range of viscosities and self-assembles into nanostructures with considerable variability in the fidelity of ordering and symmetry, as a function of water content in the binary mixtures. The observed changes in the macro and nanoscale characteristics were directly correlated to ionic domain structures and intermolecular interactions as theoretically predicted by the analysis of MD trajectories and calculated RDFs. Specifically, both chloride and nitrate are positioned in the plane of the cation. Anion to cation proximity is dependent on water content. Thiocyanate is more susceptible to water insertion into the second solvent shell. Experimental 1H NMR chemical shifts monitor the site-specific competition dependence with water content in the binary mixtures. Thiocyanate preferentially sits above and below the aromatic ring plane, a state disallowing interaction with the protons on the imidazolium ring.

Abstract
The nanosegregated bulk structure, and its evolution with the cation's alkyl length n, are studied by X-ray scattering for an unprecedentedly broad homologous series of a model room-temperature ionic liquid, [CnMIM][NTf2] (n = 4-22). A tri-periodic local structure is found, with the lateral periodicities, dII and dIII independent of n, and a longitudinal one, dI, linearly increasing with n. The results are consistent with a local structure comprising alternating layers of polar headgroups and apolar, interdigitated, partly overlapping, cations' alkyl tails, of an average macroscopic mass density close to that of liquid alkanes. A slope decrease in the linear dI(n) suggests a change from a lower to a higher rate of increase with n of chain overlap for n ≥ 12. The order decay lengths of the layering, and of the lateral chain packing, increase with n, as expected from the increasing van der Waals interaction's domination of the structure. The headgroups' lateral packing decay length decreases with n, due to increasing frustration between the longer lateral periodicity preferred by the headgroups, and the shorter lateral periodicity preferred by the chains. A comparison of the bulk and surface structures highlights the surface's ordering effect, which, however, does not induce here a surface phase different from the bulk, as it does in liquid crystals and liquid alkanes.

Abstract
A common feature of ionic liquids composed of cations with long aliphatic side chains is structural heterogeneities on the nanometer length scale. This so-called microphase separation arises from the clustering of aliphatic moieties. The temperature dependence of the liquid bulk structure was studied by small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering for a set of methylimidazolium ([C18C1im]+, [C22C1im]+) based ionic liquids with tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate ([FAP]-), bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([NTf2]-), and bis(nonafluorobutylsulfonyl)imide ([NNf2]-) anions. The experimental data is quantitatively analyzed using a generalized Teubner-Strey model. Discussion of the resulting periodicity d and correlation length ξ shows that the structural heterogeneities are governed by the interplay between the alkyl chain length, the geometry of the anion, and entropic effects. Connections between the mesoscopic correlation functions, density, and entropy of fusion are discussed in comparison to alcohols. The observed dependencies allow predictions on the mesoscopic correlation functions based on macroscopic bulk quantities.

Abstract
The rate constant for the reaction between hexan-1-amine and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde was determined in ionic liquids containing an imidazolium cation. The effect on the rate constant of increasing the length of the alkyl substituent on the cation was examined in a number of ionic liquid/acetonitrile mixtures. In general it was found that there was no significant effect of changing the alkyl substituent on the rate constant of this process, suggesting that any nanodomains in these mixtures do not have a significant effect on the outcome of this process. A series of small-angle X-ray scattering and wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments were performed on mixtures of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([Bmim][N(CF3SO2)2]) and acetonitrile; this work indicated that the main structural changes in the mixtures occur by about a 0.2 mole fraction of ionic liquid in the mixture (χIL). This region at which the main changes in the solvent structuring occurs corresponds to the region at which the main changes in the rate constant and activation parameters occur for SN2 and condensation reactions examined previously; this is the first time that such a correlation has been observed. To examine the ordering of the solvent about the nucleophile hexan-1-amine, WAXS experiments were performed on a number of [Bmim][N(CF3SO2)2]/acetonitrile/hexan-1-amine mixtures, where it was found that some of the patterns featured asymmetric peaks as well as additional peaks not observed in the [Bmim][N(CF3SO2)2]/acetonitrile mixtures; this suggests that the addition of hexan-1-amine to the mixture affects the bulk structure of the liquid. The SAXS/WAXS patterns of mixtures of 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([Bm2im][N(CF3SO2)2]) and acetonitrile were also determined, with the results suggesting that [Bm2im][N(CF3SO2)2] is more ordered than [Bmim][N(CF3SO2)2] due to an enhancement in the short-range interactions.
