Advancements in Clay Materials for Trace Level Determination and Remediation of Phenols from Wastewater: A Review

The wide spread of phenols and their toxicity in the environment pose a severe threat to the existence and sustainability of living organisms. Rapid detection of these pollutants in wastewaters has attracted the attention of researchers from various fields of environmental science and engineering. Discoveries regarding materials and method developments are deemed necessary for the effective detection and remediation of wastewater. Although various advanced materials such as organic and inorganic materials have been developed, secondary pollution due to material leaching has become a major concern. Therefore, a natural-based material is preferable. Clay is one of the potential natural-based sorbents for the detection and remediation of phenols. It has a high porosity and polarity, good mechanical strength, moisture resistance, chemical and thermal stability, and cation exchange capacity, which will benefit the detection and adsorptive removal of phenols. Several attempts have been made to improve the capabilities of natural clay as sorbent. This manuscript will discuss the potential of clays as sorbents for the remediation of phenols. The activation, modification, and application of clays have been discussed. The achievements, challenges, and concluding remarks were provided.

Optimization of the Pentachlorophenol Adsorption by Organo-Clays Based on Response Surface Methodology

The aim of this study is to optimize the adsorption of pentachlorophenol (PCP) using an organo-clay under the response surface methodology. The adsorbent was selected from a montmorillonite exchanged by various cations, such as Fe³⁺, Al³⁺, Zn²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, and modified by bromide cetyltrimethylammonium (CTAB) as surfactant. The obtained organo-montmorillonite was characterized using several techniques, such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nitrogen adsorption, performed at -196 °C. The results showed an increase in basal space from 1.65 to 1.88 nm and a decrease in the specific surface and pore volume, with an increase in pore diameter, including the presence of characteristic bands of -CH₂- and -CH₃- groups at 2926 and 2854 cm^-1 in the FTIR spectrum after the modification. The optimization of PCP removal by clay adsorbents is achieved using the response surface methodology (RSM) with a four-factor central composite model, including pH of solution, mass of adsorbent, contact time, and initial concentration. The results proved the validity of the regression model, wherein the adsorption capacity reaches its maximum value of 38 mg/g at a lower adsorbent mass of 20 mg, pH of 6, contact time (t_c) of 5 h, and initial concentration of 8 mg/L.

Efficient removal of mefenamic acid and ibuprofen on organo-Vts with a quinoline-containing gemini surfactant: Adsorption studies and model calculations

To pursue the adsorptivity of versatile vermiculite (Na-Vt)-based adsorbent targeted at emerging pharmaceuticals (mefenamic acid and ibuprofen, corresponding to MEA and IBP, respectively), a quinoline-based gemini surfactant (DHQU) with multi-functional groups is applied as modifier on Na-Vt. Enhanced hydrophobicity, enlarged interlayer space and decreased surface area of DHQU-Vt are obtained, whose modifier availability (the mole ratio of modifier intercalated to added) reaches up to 84.18% as characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TG-DTG, EA and BET analysis. Efficient adsorption of MEA/IBP (123.71/240.69 mg/g) is achieved under an extremely low DHQU dosage (0.2 CEC lower than the usual saturated dosage of organo-Vts), with all the processes fitting satisfactorily with pseudo-second order and Freundlich isotherm models accompanied by an exothermic nature. Acid pickling testifies a stable and reliable reusability process of DHQU-Vt even after 3 cycles. Multiple interactions (i.e., partition process, XH-π interaction, π-π interaction, π-π stacking and electrostatic interaction) are revealed and compared from not only characterization results, but also simulation of frontier orbital analysis, the adsorption configuration and bonding analysis: (i) The greater molecular flexibility of the adsorbate, the greater intra particle diffusion effect. (ii) π-π stacking between isolated aromatic rings is stronger than that between parallelly connected aromatic rings. (iii) The strength of multiple active sites provided by quinoline (CH-π, NH-π and π-π interactions) are comparable but weaker than electrostatic interaction/intra particle diffusion.

Effective Adsorption of Methyl Orange on Organo-Silica Nanoparticles Functionalized by a Multi-Hydroxyl-Containing Gemini Surfactant: A Joint Experimental and Theoretical Study

A novel multi-hydroxyl-containing gemini surfactant (G₁₆) is first designed for modifying silica precursors (SiNPs), with the purpose of fabricating organic adsorbents targeted at methyl orange (MO). The purity of G₁₆ and structural character of the resultant G₁₆-SiNPs are unveiled through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry-derivative thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and surface analysis (BET). Compared with SiNPs, G₁₆-SiNPs exhibit enhanced hydrophobicity, enlarged interlayer spacing, and increased thermal weight losses with the modifier availability reaching as high as 100%. Enhanced MO adsorption is obtained from the higher adsorption capacity of G₁₆-SiNPs (401.88 mg/g) than SiNPs (64.72 mg/g), which is more effective than most of the existing silica-based adsorbents. Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models conform to all adsorption processes, indicating that the adsorption mainly relies on the availability of adsorption sites and characterized by a homogeneous adsorption form. By combining the experimental study and theoretical calculation methods, it can be demonstrated that the as-synthesized adsorbent G₁₆-SiNPs own multi-active sites that contribute to multi-adsorption mechanisms. The partition process, electrostatic interactions, and OH-π interactions are all responsible for the adsorption performance of G₁₆-SiNPs. This study throws light on the exploration of the superb MO adsorbent in aspects of not only the novel structured modifier and precursor but also theoretical analysis for gaining insights into the adsorption mechanism.

Pore wettability for enhanced oil recovery, contaminant adsorption and oil/water separation: A review

Wettability, a fundamental property of porous surface, occupies a pivotal position in the fields of enhanced oil recovery, organic contaminant adsorption and oil/water separation. In this review, wettability and the related applications are systematically expounded from the perspectives of hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity and super-wettability. Four common measurement methods are generalized and categorized into contact angle method and ratio method, and influencing factors (temperature, the type and layer charge of matrix, the species and structure of modifier) as well as their corresponding altering methods (inorganic, organic and thermal modification etc.) of wettability are overviewed. Different roles of wettability alteration in enhanced oil recovery, organic contaminant adsorption as well as oil/water separation are summarized. Among these applications, firstly, the hydrophilic alteration plays a key role in recovery of the oil production process; secondly, hydrophobic circumstance of surface drives the organic pollutant adsorption more effectually; finally, super-wetting property of matrix ensures the high-efficient separation of oil from water. This review also identifies importance, challenges and future prospects of wettability alteration, and as a result, furnishes the essential guidance for selection and design inspiration of the wettability modification, and supports the further development of pore wettability application.

Biogenic and chemically synthesized Solanum tuberosum peel-silver nanoparticle hybrid for the ultrasonic aided adsorption of bromophenol blue dye

This work was aimed at the synthesis of a hybrid (STpe-AgNP), obtained by impregnation of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) onto Solanum tuberosum peel (STpe), for the ultrasonic assisted adsorption of bromophenol blue (BB) dye. SEM, FTIR, XRD, EDX, TGA and BET techniques were used to characterize the adsorbents. The XRD, SEM and EDX confirmed successful impregnation of AgNPs onto STpe to form the hybrid. The AgNPs impregnated onto the hybrid were found to be water stable at various pH values of 2.0-9.0. Chi-square (χ2 < 0.024) and linear regression (R2 > 0.996) showed that the Freundlich model was best fitted among the isotherm models, corroborated by the oriented site model. Kinetic analysis conformed to the intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-first-order rate equations, while thermodynamics displayed a physical, spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process. The presence of competing Pb(II), Ni(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) metal ions in solution interfered with the adsorption of BB onto the biosorbents. In terms of reusability, STpe and STpe-AgNP showed BB desorption of 91.3% and 88.5% respectively, using NaOH as eluent. Ultra-sonication significantly enhanced the adsorption of BB by both adsorbents, but the impregnation of AgNPs only slightly improved adsorption of the dye from the simulated wastewater. This study also illustrated that pristine STpe biomass waste is a cheap viable option for the decontamination of BB from water.

Adsorption of Methylene Blue in Water onto Activated Carbon by Surfactant Modification

In this paper, the enhanced adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye ion on the activated carbon (AC) modified by three surfactants in aqueous solution was researched. Anionic surfactants—sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS)—and cationic surfactant—hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)—were used for the modification of AC. This work showed that the adsorption performance of cationic dye by activated carbon modified by anionic surfactants (SLS) was significantly improved, whereas the adsorption performance of cationic dye by activated carbon modified by cationic surfactant (CTAB) was reduced. In addition, the effects of initial MB concentration, AC dosage, pH, reaction time, temperature, real water samples, and additive salts on the adsorption were studied. When Na+, K+, Ca2+, NH4+, and Mg2+ were present in the MB dye solution, the effect of these cations was negligible on the adsorption (<5%). The presence of NO2- improved the adsorption performance significantly, whereas the removal rate of MB was reduced in the presence of competitive cation (Fe2+). It was found that the isotherm data had a good correlation with the Langmuir isotherm through analyzing the experimental data by various models. The dynamics of adsorption were better described by the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. The results showed that AC modified by anionic surfactant was effective for the adsorption of MB dye in both modeling water and real water.
