Experimental and DFT studies on the selective adsorption of Pd(II) from wastewater by pyromellitic-functionalized poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microsphere

A novel hydrangea-like magnetic composite Fe3O4@MnO2@ZIF-67 for efficient selective adsorption of Pd(II) from metallurgical wastewater

The selective adsorption of palladium from wastewater is a feasible solution to solving palladium pollution and resource scarcity. Because traditional solvent extraction methods often involve the use of considerable amounts of organic solvents, research is focused on investigating adsorption techniques that can selectively remove palladium from wastewater. In this paper, the magnetic composite Fe3O4@MnO2@ZIF-67 was synthesized and its performance for the adsorption of Pd(II) in acidic water was investigated. Fe3O4@MnO2@ZIF-67 was characterized by various analytical methods such as TEM, SEM, EDS, BET, XRD, FTIR, zeta potential analysis, VSM, and TGA. The effects of palladium ion concentration, contact time, pH, and temperature on adsorption were evaluated. The kinetics were shown to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Elovich model, and the rate-limiting step was chemisorption. Thermodynamic studies showed that increasing the temperature promoted the adsorption of Pd(II), and the maximum uptake capacity of Fe3O4@MnO2@ZIF-67 for Pd(II) was 531.91 mg g-1. Interestingly, Fe3O4@MnO2@ZIF-67 exhibited superior selectivity for Pd(II) in the presence of Ir(IV), Pt(IV), and Rh(III). The adsorbent can be used repeatedly for selective adsorption of palladium. Even at the fifth cycle, the uptake rate of Pd(II) remained as high as 83.1%, and it showed a favorable adsorption capacity and selectivity for Pd(II) in real metallurgical wastewater. The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by SEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS, and DFT calculations, which indicated that electrostatic interactions and coordination with nitrogen-containing groups were involved. Fe3O4@MnO2@ZIF-67 is a promising adsorbent for the efficient adsorption and selective separation of palladium ions.

Interactive effects of palladium (Pd) and microplastics (MPs) on metal bioaccumulation and biological responses in the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis

This study investigates the potential of MPs as carriers of pollutants as they can strengthen bioaccumulation of toxic metals on marine organisms. For the first time, the interaction of the metal palladium (Pd) with the widespread MPs, both with increasing concentrations in water environments from anthropogenic sources, was tested. Mytilus galloprovincialis, an important seafood product, was exposed to Pd (24 h) in two ways: water-dissolved and MPs-adsorbed, with depuration followed for 144 h. Quantification of Pd in tissues shown an accumulation 2-3 times higher (59 % of initial Pd) for mussels exposed to MPs-adsorbed Pd and higher in digestive gland than when exposed to water-dissolved Pd (25 %; higher in gills). Additionally, it was demonstrated that Pd induced oxidative stress and altered the feeding behavior of mussels. Therefore, this work support MPs as being vectors of metals (i.e. Pd) to enhance their bioaccumulation on marine organisms which highlights ecological risk of these emerging pollutants.

Methacrylate-Based Polymeric Sorbents for Recovery of Metals from Aqueous Solutions

The industrialization and urbanization expansion have increased the demand for precious and rare earth elements (REEs). In addition, environmental concerns regarding the toxic effects of heavy metals on living organisms imposed an urgent need for efficient methods for their removal from wastewaters and aqueous solutions. The most efficient technique for metal ions removal from wastewaters is adsorption due to its reversibility and high efficiency. Numerous adsorbents were mentioned as possible metal ions adsorbents in the literature. Chelating polymer ligands (CPLs) with adaptable surface chemistry, high affinity towards targeted metal ions, high capacity, fast kinetics, chemically stable, and reusable are especially attractive. This review is focused on methacrylate-based magnetic and non-magnetic porous sorbents. Special attention was devoted to amino-modified glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) copolymers. Main adsorption parameters, kinetic models, adsorption isotherms, thermodynamics of the adsorption process, as well as regeneration of the polymeric sorbents were discussed.

Efficient and selective adsorption of Au(iii), Pt(iv), and Pd(ii) by a radiation-crosslinked poly(ionic liquid) gel

A PIL gel was prepared for Au(iii), Pt(iv), and Pd(ii) recovery. The PIL gel exhibited fast adsorption rates and excellent selectivity for target ions. Furthermore, the gel could efficiently separate Au(iii) from gold slag leaching solution.

Studies on Preparation, Characterization and Application of Porous Functionalized Glycidyl Methacrylate-Based Microspheres

A one-step swelling and polymerization technique was used in the synthesis of porous glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) monodisperse polymeric microspheres. The polystyrene (PS) seed obtained in the dispersion polymerization was used as a shape template. The presence of epoxide rings in the chemical structure of microspheres enables their post-polymerization chemical modifications involving: the Diels-Alder reaction with sodium cyclopentadienide and maleic anhydride, the reaction with 4,4′-(bismaleimido)diphenylmethane, and the thiol-Michael reaction with methacryloyl chloride and 2-mercaptopropionic acid. Changing the reaction mixture composition—the amounts of crosslinking monomer and PS seed as well as the type and concentration of porogen porous microspheres of different porous structures were obtained. Their porous structures were characterized in the dry and swollen states. The copolymers obtained from the equimolar monomers mixture modified in the above way were applied as the column packing materials and tested in the reverse-phase HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography). A few factors influencing morphology and porous structure of microspheres were studied.
