Effect of number of anchoring groups on binding ability of perylene diimides with SnO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles: A spectroscopic approach

The effect of imide substituents on the optical properties of perylene diimide derivatives

As one of the most important organic semiconductors, perylene diimide derivatives (PDIs) have been widely applied in optoelectronics. Two kinds of soluble PDIs with different imide substituents have been synthesized and their optical properties have been investigated. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity of the PDI with amino phenyl imide substituents (NH₂ -PDI) is much lower than that of the PDI with octyl imide substituents (O-PDI). It can be found that the Stokes shift of O-PDI is positive, whereas, the Stokes shift of NH₂ -PDI is negative. The emission intensity of the 0-0 electron transition relative to that of the 1-0 electron transition (I_0-0 /I_1-0 ) in the PL spectrum of O-PDI is decreased, but the value of I_0-0 /I_1-0 in the PL spectra of NH₂ -PDI is increased as the dielectric constant of the solvent increases. The large overlap between the absorption and PL spectra plays an important role to result in the low PL intensity of NH₂ -PDI. The PL decay data show that a non-radiative process, photoinduced electron transfer, also contributes to the low PL intensity of NH₂ -PDI. The results can help researchers to understand the effect of the imide substituents on the optical properties of PDIs.

Solvent Directed Morphogenesis and Electrical Properties of a Peptide-Perylenediimide Conjugate

Molecular organization of electron-deficient aromatic systems like perylenediimides (PDI) is extremely appealing, as they are potential candidates for organic electronics. The performance of these molecules in such applications primarily depends on the self-organization of the molecules. However, any correlation between the morphology of these self-assembled semiconducting molecules and their electrical performances has not yet been formulated. Herein, for the first time, we have made an effort to find such a correlation by studying the self-assembly, morphology, and their conducting properties for a peptide-PDI conjugate. The PDI conjugate formed fiber-like morphology in relatively nonpolar solvents (THF and CHCl₃) while in more polar solvents (HFIP, MeOH, ACN, and acetone), spherical morphology could be found. Interestingly, the self-assembly and the morphologies showed a clear dependence on the solvent polarity. In polar solvents, the conjugate aggregates more efficiently than in the nonpolar solvents, and with decrease in solvent polarity, the dimension of the nanostructures increased. However, in all the tested solvents, irrespective of their polarity, the PDI-peptide conjugate adopts a right-handed helicity. To find a correlation between the morphologies with the conducting property, detailed electrical characterization of these nanostructures was carried out. While no significant change could be observed for the dc conductivities of these nanostructures, the ac conductivities show prominent difference at the low-frequency region. A dispersion of conductivity was observed for the nanospheres due to the polarization effect. A critical correlation between the nanostructures and the activation energy was observed as with decrease in radii of curvature of the aggregates the activation energy increases with an exception in the case of MeOH. The observed results suggest that the long-range transport of charge carriers is less favorable when the aggregates are small and closely packed.

Synthesis, characterization and binding interactions of amino acids coupled perylene diimides with colloidal doped and undoped TiO₂

Two sensitizers based on amino acids coupled with perylene moiety having absorption in the visible region have been designed and their interaction with doped and undoped TiO2 for the application of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has been studied. The synthesized compounds PDI-PA and PDI-AA were characterized using (1)H and (13)C NMR, Mass and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques. The optical properties and lifetime measurements of the sensitizers were analyzed using various solvents with different polarity. The solvatochromism effect was studied using Lippert-Mataga plot. The electrochemical studies of both dyes were investigated in DMF with various scan rate ranging from 200 to 1000 mV s(-1). Colloidal doped and undoped TiO2 was prepared and characterized by using absorption measurements. Binding ability of the sensitizers with the nanoparticles was studied through absorption, fluorescence quenching, cyclic voltammetry and FT-IR measurements. Results obtained from all the above analysis suggest the mode of quenching may be static. The binding constant values were calculated using Kamat-Fox equation indicates the binding behavior of the sensitizers with the nanoparticles. The fluorescence quenching was mainly attributed to electron transfer from the excited state of PDI's to the conduction band of colloidal semiconductors. The electron transfer mechanism was explained based on the Rehm-Weller equation as well as the energy level diagram.
