Abstract
The thin line between efficacy and toxicity has challenged cancer therapy. As copper is an essential micronutrient and is important to tumor biology, CuII complexes emerged as an alternative to chemotherapy; however, its biological properties need to be better understood. Thus, we report in vitro the antitumor effects of two CuII complexes named [Cu(4-fh)(phen)(ClO4)2] (complex 1) and [Cu(4-nh)(phen)(ClO4)2]·H2O (complex 2), in which 4-fh = 4-fluorophenoxyacetic acid hydrazide; 4-nh = 4-nitrobenzoic hydrazide and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline. Both complexes presented cytotoxic activity against tumor cells, but only complex 1 showed significant selectivity. Complex 1 also induced DNA-damage, led to G0/G1 arrest and triggered apoptosis, which was initiated by an autophagy dysfunction. The significant in vitro selectivity and the action mechanism of complex 1 are noteworthy and reveal this prodrug as promising for anticancer therapy.

Abstract
Metal ions play a very important role in environmental as well as biological fields. The detection of specific metal ions at a minute level caught much attention, and hence, several probes are available in the literature. Even though benzothiazole-based molecules have a special place in the medicinal field, only very few chemosensors are reported based on this moiety. The current work describes the design and synthesis of the benzothiazole-based chemosensor for a highly selective and sensitive detection of biologically important metal ions such as Zn2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+. The sensing studies of compound-1 showed a ratiometric as well as colorimetric response toward Zn2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ ions and color changes from colorless to yellow and is found to be insensitive toward various metal ions (Cd2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Ba2+, Al3+, Ca2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+). Further, compound-1 exhibited ratiometric as well as turn-on-enhanced fluorescence response toward Zn2+ ions and turn off response for Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions. The Job plots revealed that the binding stoichiometry of compound-1 and metal ions is 2:1. The detection limits were found to be 0.25 ppm for Zn2+, while it was 0.30 ppm and 0.34 ppm for Ni2+ and Cu2+, respectively. In addition, density functional theory results strongly support the colorimetric response of metals, and the reversibility studies suggested that compound-1 can be used as a powerful chemosensor for the detection of Zn2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ ions. The bioimaging data illustrated that compound-1 is a very effective ratiometric sensor for Zn2+ ions in live cells.

Abstract
The molecular and QSAR (Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship) properties of title compound 2-((6-Methoxybenzo[d]thiazol-2-ylimino)methyl)-6-ethoxyphenol (HL) were evaluated employing HyperChem 7.5 tools. The interaction of the 1a-1e complexes of HL with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was investigated by absorption titrations, Fluorescence quenching and viscosity measurements. The experimental data suggest that these complexes bind to CT-DNA through an intercalative mode, wherein DNA-binding affinity of 1e is found to be greater compared to other complexes. The tryptophan emission-quenching with bovine serum albumin (BSA) experiment revealed stronger binding of 1e than other complexes in the hydrophobic region of protein. The photocleavage of plasmid pBR322 DNA investigated in the presence of the title complexes inferred conversion of supercoiled form of DNA plasmid to circular nicked form. Free-radical scavenging activity studies of HL and its metal complexes determined by their interaction with the stable free-radical DPPH have shown promising antioxidant property. Further cytotoxicity studies with HeLa and MCF-7 cell lines indicated that the compounds can efficiently inhibit the cell proliferation in a dose dependent manner. The DAPI staining assay studies revealed the higher potency of 1e to induce apoptosis. Abstract
A number of novel tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]phenanthrolines 7-11 containing phenanthroline and diverse aromatic linkages were conveniently synthesized by a one-pot protocol between a series of dihydroxy arenes and 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives. Single-crystal diffraction analysis revealed that the resulting macrocycles possess diverse conformational and cavity structures which are regulated by the different aromatic linkages. In line with the length of the aromatic linkages, the distance between the two phenanthroline moieties ( dN-N) gradually increases from 6.92 to 13.30 Å, respectively. The physicochemical properties of these macrocyclic compounds were investigated by spectroscopic, CV, and DPV measurements. Owing to the coordination ability of the phenanthroline moieties and the tunable conformational structure, the macrocyclic hosts can form distinct dinuclear complexation with Cu2+. Typically, with a short aromatic linkage the 7b-2Cu(II) complex gives an O-bridged dicopper structure, while with long linkage the 11b-2Cu(II) complex possesses two discrete copper centers. The spectroscopic structure and the redox property of the dicopper complexes were investigated by XPS, CV, and DPV techniques. This work hence provides a platform to access biomimetic copper-containing small-molecule models with well-defined structures.
