Abstract
Quinone-induced browning is widely produced in foods and is mostly considered a consequence of quinone/nucleophile reactions. However, even in the absence of amino acids or proteins, o-quinones develop browning. In an attempt to better understand the reaction pathways involved in this browning development, this study describes the reactions of 4-methyl-1,2-benzoquinone with alcohols, ammonia, and short chain aldehydes. These reaction mixtures developed browning at 37 °C and the main produced compounds were isolated by semipreparative HPLC and characterized by NMR and MS as phenazines, phenoxazines, and benzoxazoles. A reaction pathway that explains the formation of all these compounds is proposed. The formation of phenazines is responsible, at least partially, for the produced browning, and the formation of benzoxazoles inhibits such browning. Browning development seems to be a consequence of a competition among the reactions of formation of phenazines, phenoxazines, and benzoxazoles, which appear to be produced from a single intermediate.

Abstract
This paper presents the development of a photoelectrochemical sensor for hypochlorous acid (HOCl) detection, employing a phenothiazine-based organic photosensitizer (Dye-PZ). The designed probe, Dye-PZ, follows a D-π-A structure with phenothiazine as the electron-donating group and a cyano-substituted pyridine unit as the electron-accepting group. A specific reaction of the phenothiazine sulfur atom with HOCl enables selective recognition. The covalent immobilization of Dye-PZ onto a titanium dioxide nanorod-coated fluorine-doped tin oxide electrode (FTO/TiO2) using bromo-silane coupling agent (BrPTMS) resulted in the fabrication of the photoanode FTO/TiO2/BrPTMS/Dye-PZ. The photoanode exhibited a significant photoresponse under visible-light irradiation, with a subsequent reduction in photocurrent upon reaction with HOCl. The oxidation of the phenothiazine sulfur atom to a sulfoxide diminished the internal charge transfer (ICT) effect. Leveraging this principle, the successful photoelectrochemical sensing of HOCl was achieved. The sensor showed high stability, excellent reproducibility, and selective sensitivity for HOCl detection. Our study provides a novel approach for the development of efficient photoelectrochemical sensors based on organic photosensitizers, with promising applications in water quality monitoring and biosensing.

Abstract
Sensing important metals in different environments is an important area and involves the development of a wide variety of metal-sensing materials. The employment of fluorescent sensors in metal sensing has been one of the most widely applied methodologies, and the identification of selective metal sensors is important. We herein report a phenothiazine-based Cu(II) fluorescent sensor that is highly selective to Cu(II) ions compared with other transition metal salts. The Lewis acidity of the Cu(II) salt certainly was found to be a factor for obtaining an enhanced sensing response in MeOH as the solvent, while a ratio of 1:1 was calculated to be the most optimum for getting the desired response.

Abstract
Two blue donor-acceptor fluorophores with 1,4,5-triphenylimidazole as the electron-transporting unit and phenothiazine as the hole-transporting unit were synthesized by grafting 1,4,5-triphenylimidazole moieties onto 3- and 3,7-position of the phenothiazine core and characterized by spectroscopic methods. Their thermal stability, photophysical, electrochemical and electroluminescence properties were systematically investigated. These compounds exhibit good thermal stability and show blue emission in dichloromethane solution and thin solid films. The solution-processed doped devices were fabricated by using these fluorophores as the emitting dopant in 1,3-bis(N-carbazolyl)benzene host, in which the device fabricated from the fluorophore containing two 1,4,5-triphenylimidazole moieties exhibited blue emission with a luminance of 648 cd/m2 and external quantum efficiency of 1.48%.

Abstract
N-Aryl phenothiazines and phenoxazines are of significant importance in various disciplines throughout academia and industry. The conventional synthetic strategy for the construction of these structures centers on the transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl halides with phenothiazines or phenoxazines. Here we present an organocatalytic approach to access N-naphthyl phenothiazine and phenoxazine scaffolds through a straightforward C-H amination of arenes as enabled by an azo group. This reaction features operational simplicity, adequate substrate generality and excellent functional group compatibility. Notably, the efficiency of the catalyst could be perfectly preserved after 5 catalytic cycles.

The dielectric response of phenothiazine-based glass-formers with different molecular complexity. Sci Rep 2021; 11:15816. Abstract
We examined a series of structurally related glass-forming liquids in which a phenothiazine-based tricyclic core (PTZ) was modified by attaching n-alkyl chains of different lengths (n = 4, 8, 10). We systematically disentangled the impact of chemical structure modification on the intermolecular organization and molecular dynamics probed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns evidenced that all PTZ-derivatives are not 'ordinary' liquids and form nanoscale clusters. The chain length has a decisive impact on properties, exerting a plasticizing effect on the dynamics. Its elongation decreases glass transition temperature with slight impact on fragility. The increase in the medium-range order was manifested as a broadening of the dielectric loss peak reflected in the lower value of stretching parameter βKWW. A disagreement with the behavior observed for non-associating liquids was found as a deviation from the anti-correlation between the value of βKWW and the relaxation strength of the α-process. Besides, to explain the broadening of loss peak in PTZ with the longest (decyl) chain a slow Debye process was postulated. In contrast, the sample with the shortest alkyl chain and a less complex structure with predominant supramolecular assembly through π-π stacking exhibits no clear Debye-mode fingerprints. The possible reasons are also discussed.

Abstract
Aminophenoxazinones are degradation products resulting from the metabolism of different plant species, which comprise a family of natural products well known for their pharmacological activities. This review provides an overview of the pharmacological properties and applications proved by these compounds and their structural derivatives during 2000-2021. The bibliography was selected according to our purpose from the references obtained in a SciFinder database search for the Phx-3 structure (the base molecule of the aminophenoxazinones). Compounds Phx-1 and Phx-3 are among the most studied, especially as anticancer drugs for the treatment of gastric and colon cancer, glioblastoma and melanoma, among others types of relevant cancers. The main information available in the literature about their mechanisms is also described. Similarly, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiparasitic activities are presented, including species related directly or indirectly to significant diseases. Therefore, we present diverse compounds based on aminophenoxazinones with high potential as drugs, considering their levels of activity and few adverse effects.

Abstract
Utilizing facile one-electron oxidation of 10H-phenothiazine by molecular diiodine, the solid-state structure of the 10H-phenothiazinium radical cation was obtained in three cation:iodide ratios, as well as its THF and acetone solvates. Oxidation of 10H-phenothiazine with molecular diiodine in DMSO or DMF provided the structure of the radical coupling product 10-(3-phenothiazinyldene)phenothiazinium, which has not been crystallographically characterized to date. The radical cations were balanced by a mixture (I7 )- , (I5 )- , (I3 )- , and I- anions, where a variety of chalcogen, halogen, and hydrogen bonding interactions stabilize the structures to reveal these interesting cationic species.

Abstract
Phenothiazine (PTZ) is one of the most extensively investigated S, N heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons due to its unique optical, electronic properties, flexibility of functionalization, low cost, and commercial availability. Hence, PTZ and its derivative materials have been attractive in various optoelectronic applications in the last few years. In this prospective, we have focused on the most significant characteristics of PTZ and highlighted how the structural modifications such as different electron donors or acceptors, length of the π-conjugated system or spacers, polar or non-polar chains, and other functional groups influence the optoelectronic properties. This prospective provides a recent account of the advances in phenothiazine derivative materials as an active layer(s) for optoelectronic (viz. dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), perovskite solar cells (PSCs), organic solar cells (OSCs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistor (OFETs), chemosensing, nonlinear optical materials (NLOs), and supramolecular self-assembly applications. Finally, future prospects are discussed based on the structure-property relationship in PTZ-derivative materials. This overview will pave the way for researchers to design and develop new PTZ-functionalized structures and use them for various organic optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
The concatenation of Suzuki coupling and Buchwald‐Hartwig amination in a consecutive multicomponent reaction opens a concise, modular and efficient one‐pot approach to diversely functionalized heterocycles, as exemplified for 3,10‐diaryl 10H‐phenothiazines, 3,9‐diaryl 9H‐carbazoles, and 1,5‐diaryl 1H‐indoles, in high yields starting from simple staring materials. Moreover, this one‐pot reaction is a sequentially palladium‐catalyzed process that does not require additional catalyst loading after the first coupling step.

Abstract
The need to find alternative sources of energy and environmental protection has
resulted in the significant development of organic photovoltaics. The synthesis of organic
compounds that will ensure the efficiency of the cells has become a key issue. In this
work, we present an overview of materials based on donor-linker-acceptor structural motifs,
and summarize the current state of research which can help in the design of new, effective
photovoltaic materials.

Abstract
This mini-review summarizes the syntheses and functionalizations of dithieno[1,4]thiazines and bis[1]benzothieno[1,4]thiazines, both electron density-enriched congeners of phenothiazines with remarkable electronic properties. Diversity-oriented, straightforward, and efficient syntheses, including versatile one-pot processes, have been developed for the anellated 1,4-thiazines as well as various functionalization for the expansion of the π-systems. Thereby, syntheses of different regioisomers depending on the (benzo)thieno-thiazine anellation are discussed, which exert a deep impact on the electronic properties. The tunable photophysical and electrochemical properties of dithieno[1,4]thiazines and bis[1]benzothieno[1,4]thiazines outscore phenothiazines on many points and promise an enormous potential in molecular electronics and applications beyond.
