MnO2-DNA nanomaterials toward the dual signal detection of P-aminophenol micropollutants

P-Aminophenol (PAP), a potentially toxic and mutagenic compound, is widely distributed in water and soil and has serious side effects on human health. This study presents a convenient, sensitive, and effective dual-signal assay for the detection of PAP in the environment. Two-dimensional manganese dioxide (MnO₂) nanosheets were used as the carrier and quencher for fluorophore-labelled DNA to form a dual-signal nanoprobe, MnO₂-DNA. Based on a specific redox reaction between the MnO₂ nanosheets and target PAP, the corresponding absorption intensity of the product and the fluorescence intensity were both "turn-on" and also exhibited excellent correlation with the concentration of PAP. This strategy not only remarkably simplifies the detection process but also improves the reliability of results due to the dual-signal response, which has promising applications in environmental, clinical, and industrial research fields.

Recent Development of Nano-Carbon Material in Pharmaceutical Application: A Review

Carbon nanomaterials have attracted researchers in pharmaceutical applications due to their outstanding properties and flexible dimensional structures. Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) have electrical properties, high thermal surface area, and high cellular internalization, making them suitable for drug and gene delivery, antioxidants, bioimaging, biosensing, and tissue engineering applications. There are various types of carbon nanomaterials including graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, nanodiamond, quantum dots and many more that have interesting applications in the future. The functionalization of the carbon nanomaterial surface could modify its chemical and physical properties, as well as improve drug loading capacity, biocompatibility, suppress immune response and have the ability to direct drug delivery to the targeted site. Carbon nanomaterials could also be fabricated into composites with proteins and drugs to reduce toxicity and increase effectiveness in the pharmaceutical field. Thus, carbon nanomaterials are very effective for applications in pharmaceutical or biomedical systems. This review will demonstrate the extraordinary properties of nanocarbon materials that can be used in pharmaceutical applications.

Nanoparticle and Nanostructure Synthesis and Controlled Growth Methods

Nanomaterials are materials with one or more nanoscale dimensions (internal or external) (i.e., 1 to 100 nm). The nanomaterial shape, size, porosity, surface chemistry, and composition are controlled at the nanoscale, and this offers interesting properties compared with bulk materials. This review describes how nanomaterials are classified, their fabrication, functionalization techniques, and growth-controlled mechanisms. First, the history of nanomaterials is summarized and then the different classification methods, based on their dimensionality (0-3D), composition (carbon, inorganic, organic, and hybrids), origin (natural, incidental, engineered, bioinspired), crystal phase (single phase, multiphase), and dispersion state (dispersed or aggregated), are presented. Then, the synthesis methods are discussed and classified in function of the starting material (bottom-up and top-down), reaction phase (gas, plasma, liquid, and solid), and nature of the dispersing forces (mechanical, physical, chemical, physicochemical, and biological). Finally, the challenges in synthesizing nanomaterials for research and commercial use are highlighted.

Unlocking All-Solid Ion Selective Electrodes: Prospects in Crop Detection

This paper reviews the development of all-solid-state ion-selective electrodes (ASSISEs) for agricultural crop detection. Both nutrient ions and heavy metal ions inside and outside the plant have a significant influence on crop growth. This review begins with the detection principle of ASSISEs. The second section introduces the key characteristics of ASSISE and demonstrates its feasibility in crop detection based on previous research. The third section considers the development of ASSISEs in the detection of corps internally and externally (e.g., crop nutrition, heavy metal pollution, soil salinization, N enrichment, and sensor miniaturization, etc.) and discusses the interference of the test environment. The suggestions and conclusions discussed in this paper may provide the foundation for additional research into ion detection for crops.

Molecularly-imprinted polymer-base bulk optode for the determination of ivabradine hydrochloride in Procoralan®

IVH may be administered orally twice per day for treating heart failure, sinus rhythm, heart-related chest pain and angina pectoris, and its overdose may cause problems such as blurred vision, uncontrolled blood pressure, prolonged bradycardia, and others. A molecularly imprinted polymer-based bulk optode, miptode, was constructed for the determination of ivabradine hydrochloride (IVH) in its pharmaceutical preparation Procoralan®. The molecularly-imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared in different ratios, and MIP3 had the highest imprinting factor (1.6) as an ionophore in the miptode preparation. The miptode was prepared using weight ratios of 30% PVC polymer, 62% nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE) plasticizer, 6% MIP3 ionophore, 1% tetraphenyl borate derivative (TPB) ion-exchanger, and 1% ETH7075 chromoionophore; this miptode exhibited an absorbance increase at 530 nm in the concentration range of 10⁻²–10⁻⁵ M with a detection limit of 3.1 μM using Tris–HCl buffer of pH 7.2. The miptode was imaged using AFM, and showed the dissolution of all components except MIP particles which exhibited restricted solubility. However, the incorporation of MIP3 as an ionophore improved the selectivity coefficient over the interfering species that may exist in the pharmaceutical formulation to an extent that was not reported before; e.g. coefficients of IVH over sodium, magnesium, and glucose were improved by 5, 4 and 2 orders, when compared to the previous sensor that operated with the molecular interaction mechanism. The selectivity improvement in miptode is due to the Key-Lock fitting (host-guest molecular recognition) between the MIP particles and the template IVH molecule which is transduced with the ion-exchange process of the chromoionophore. The miptode has a response time of 1–2 minutes, and a reliable lifetime of two months. The miptode was applied successfully for the determination of IVH in the pharmaceutical preparation Procoralan® with recovery values of 89–99.8% with low standard deviations of <1.2.

Dibenzo-18-Crown-6-based Carbon Paste Sensors for the Nanomolar Potentiometric Determination of Daclatasvir Dihydrochloride: An Anti-HCV Drug and a Potential Candidate for Treatment of SARS-CoV-2

Daclatasvir dihydrochloride (DAC) is an anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) drug that has recently proven to be a promising candidate for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2. Still, there is a lack of sensitive potentiometric methods for its determination. In this work, carbon paste sensors based on dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) were fabricated and optimized for the sensitive and selective potentiometric determination of DAC in Daclavirocyrl® tablets, serum, and urine samples. The best performance was obtained by two sensors referred to as sensor I and sensor II. Both sensors exhibited a wide linear response range of 5×10⁻⁹ − 1×10⁻³ mol/L, and Nernstian slopes of 29.8 ± 1.18 and 29.5 ± 1.00 mV/decade, with limits of detection, 4.8×10⁻⁹ and 3.2×10⁻⁹ mol/L, for the sensors I and II, respectively. Sensors I and II displayed fast response times of 5–8 and 5–6 s, respectively, with great reversibility and no memory effect. Moreover, the sensors exhibited a lifetime of 16 days. For the study of sensors morphology and elucidation of the interaction mechanism, the scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) techniques were performed. A selectivity study was performed, and the proposed sensors exhibited good discrimination between DAC and potentially coexisting interferents with sensor II displaying better selectivity. Finally, sensor II was successfully applied for the determination of DAC in the above-mentioned samples, with recovery values ranging from 99.25 to 101.42%, and relative standard deviation (RSD) values ranging from 0.79 to 1.53% which reflected the high accuracy and precision.

Review on Nanoparticles and Nanostructured Materials: Bioimaging, Biosensing, Drug Delivery, Tissue Engineering, Antimicrobial, and Agro-Food Applications

In the last few decades, the vast potential of nanomaterials for biomedical and healthcare applications has been extensively investigated. Several case studies demonstrated that nanomaterials can offer solutions to the current challenges of raw materials in the biomedical and healthcare fields. This review describes the different nanoparticles and nanostructured material synthesis approaches and presents some emerging biomedical, healthcare, and agro-food applications. This review focuses on various nanomaterial types (e.g., spherical, nanorods, nanotubes, nanosheets, nanofibers, core-shell, and mesoporous) that can be synthesized from different raw materials and their emerging applications in bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, tissue engineering, antimicrobial, and agro-foods. Depending on their morphology (e.g., size, aspect ratio, geometry, porosity), nanomaterials can be used as formulation modifiers, moisturizers, nanofillers, additives, membranes, and films. As toxicological assessment depends on sizes and morphologies, stringent regulation is needed from the testing of efficient nanomaterials dosages. The challenges and perspectives for an industrial breakthrough of nanomaterials are related to the optimization of production and processing conditions.

Nanomaterials are becoming important materials in several fields and industries thanks to their very reduced size and shape-related features. Scientists think that nanoparticles and nanostructured materials originated during the Big Bang process from meteorites leading to the formation of the universe and Earth. Since 1990, the term nanotechnology became very popular due to advances in imaging technologies that paved the way to specific industrial applications. Currently, nanoparticles and nanostructured materials are synthesized on a large scale and are indispensable for many industries. This fact fosters and supports research in biochemistry, biophysics, and biochemical engineering applications. Recently, nanotechnology has been combined with other sciences to fabricate new forms of nanomaterials that could be used, for instance, for diagnostic tools, drug delivery systems, energy generation/storage, environmental remediation as well as agriculture and food processing. In contrast with traditional materials, specific features can be integrated into nanoparticles, nanostructures, and nanosystems by simply modifying their scale, shape, and composition. This article first summarizes the history of nanomaterials and nanotechnology. Followed by the progress that led to improved synthesis processes to produce different nanoparticles and nanostructures characterized by specific features. The content finally presents various origins and sources of nanomaterials, synthesis strategies, their toxicity, risks, regulations, and self-aggregation.

3D Self-Supported Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanofiber Electrodes Incorporated Co/CoOx Nanoparticles: Application to Dyes Degradation by Electro-Fenton-Based Process

We developed free-standing nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber (CNF) electrodes incorporating Co/CoO_x nanoparticles (NPs) as a new cathode material for removing Acid Orange 7 (AO7; a dye for wool) from wastewater by the heterogeneous electro-Fenton reaction. We produced the free-standing N-doped CNF electrodes by electrospinning a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and cobalt acetate solution followed by thermal carbonation of the cobalt acetate/PAN nanofibers under a nitrogen atmosphere. We then investigated electro-Fenton-based removal of AO7 from wastewater with the free-standing N-doped-CNFs-Co/CoO_x electrodes, in the presence or not of Fe²⁺ ions as a co-catalyst. The electrochemical analysis showed the high stability of the prepared N-doped-CNF-Co/CoO_x electrodes in electrochemical oxidation experiments with excellent degradation of AO7 (20 mM) at acidic to near neutral pH values (3 and 6). Electro-Fenton oxidation at 10 mA/cm² direct current for 40 min using the N-doped-CNF-Co/CoO_x electrodes loaded with 25 wt% of Co/CoO_x NPs led to complete AO7 solution decolorization with total organic carbon (TOC) removal values of 92.4% at pH 3 and 93.3% at pH 6. The newly developed N-doped-CNF-Co/CoO_x electrodes are an effective alternative technique for wastewater pre-treatment before the biological treatment.

Polyvinyl Chloride Modified Carbon Paste Electrodes for Sensitive Determination of Levofloxacin Drug in Serum, Urine, and Pharmaceutical Formulations

Levofloxacin (LF) is a medically important antibiotic drug that is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. In this study, three highly sensitive and selective carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) were fabricated for potentiometric determination of the LF drug: (i) CPEs filled with carbon paste (referred to as CPE); (ii) CPE coated (drop-casted) with ion-selective PVC membrane (referred to as C-CPE); (iii) CPE filled with carbon paste modified with a plasticizer (PVC/cyclohexanone) (referenced as P-CPE). The CPE was formulated from graphite (Gr, 44.0%) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO, 3.0%) as the carbon source, tricresyl phosphate (TCP, 47.0%) as the plasticizer; sodium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl] borate (St-TFPMB, 1.0%) as the ion exchanger; and levofloxacinium-tetraphenylborate (LF-TPB, 5.0%) as the lipophilic ion pair. It showed a sub-Nernstian slope of 49.3 mV decade⁻¹ within the LF concentration range 1.0 × 10⁻² M to 1.0 × 10⁻⁵ M, with a detection limit of 1.0 × 10⁻⁵ M. The PVC coated electrode (C-CPE) showed improved sensitivity (in terms of slope, equal to 50.2 mV decade⁻¹) compared to CPEs. After the incorporation of PVC paste on the modified CPE (P-CPE), the sensitivity increased at 53.5 mV decade⁻¹, indicating such improvement. The selectivity coefficient (log KLF2+,Fe+3pot.) against different interfering species (Na⁺, K⁺, NH⁴⁺, Ca²⁺, Al³⁺, Fe³⁺, Glycine, Glucose, Maltose, Lactose) were significantly improved by one to three orders of magnitudes in the case of C-CPE and P-CPE, compared to CPEs. The modification with the PVC membrane coating significantly improved the response time and solubility of the LF-TPB within the electrode matrix and increased the lifetime. The constructed sensors were successfully applied for LF determination in pharmaceutical preparation (Levoxin^® 500 mg), spiked urine, and serum samples with high accuracy and precision.

Molecularly Imprinted Electrochemical Sensor-Based Fe2O3@MWCNTs for Ivabradine Drug Determination in Pharmaceutical Formulation, Serum, and Urine Samples

Ivabradine hydrochloride (IVR) is a medically important drug because of its ability to lower the heart rate. Techniques reported for IVR determination were expensive, laborious, besides being of poor selectivity. In this study, iron oxide @ carbon nanotube (Fe₂O₃@MWCNTs) nanocomposite and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) were synthesized and used in the fabrication of carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) for the potentiometric detection of IVR in biological and pharmaceutical samples. CPEs of the best sensor were formulated from graphite (41 wt%) as a carbon source, MIP (3 wt.%) as an ionophore, Fe₂O₃@MWCNTs (5 wt%) as a modifier, and nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE, 51 wt.%) as a conductive oil so-called plasticizer. The best sensor exhibits a Nernstian slope (response) of 56 mV decade^–1 within the IVR concentration range from 1.0 × 10^–3 M to 9.8 × 10^–8 M with high selectivity against interfering species (ascorbic, maltose, glucose, lactose, dopamine, glycine) over those reported earlier. The use of Fe₂O₃@MWCNTs together with MIP in the electrode formulation was found to improve the limit of detection (LOD) from 630 to 98 nM along with high reversibility, a short response time of 30 s, and a good lifetime of more than 2 weeks. The sandwich membrane (SMM) method was used to quantify the H-bonding complexing strength of the MIP binding sites for IVR with Log β_ILn = 11.33. The constructed sensors were successfully applied for the IVR determination in blood serum, urine, and commercial formulations (Savapran^®) with high sensitivity.

t-Butyl calixarene/Fe2O3@MWCNTs composite-based potentiometric sensor for determination of ivabradine hydrochloride in pharmaceutical formulations

Ivabradine hydrochloride (IVB) has shown high medical importance as it is a medication for lowering the heart rate for the symptomatic chronic heart failure and symptomatic management of stable angina pectoralis. The high dose of IVB may cause severe and prolonged bradycardia, uncontrolled blood pressure, headache, and blurred vision. In this study, a highly sensitive carbon-paste electrode (CPEs) was constructed for the potentiometric determination of IVB in pharmaceutical formulations. t-Butyl calixarene (t-BCX) was used as an ionophore due to its ability to mask IVB in the cavity via multiple H-bonding at the lower rim, as estimated quantitatively by the sandwich membrane method (Log β_ILn = 8.62). Besides, the use of multi-walled carbon nanotubes decorated with Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles (Fe₂O₃@MWCNTs) as an additive for the paste electrode significantly improved the detection limit of the sensor up to 36 nM, with Nernstian response of 58.9 mV decade^-1 in the IVB linear dynamic range of 10^-3-10^-7 M in aqueous solutions. The constructed sensors showed high selectivity against interfering species that may exist in physiological fluids or pharmaceutical formulations (e.g. Na⁺, K⁺, NH₄⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Ba²⁺, Fe³⁺, Co²⁺, Cr³⁺, Sr²⁺, glucose, lactose, maltose, glycine, dopamine, and ascorbic acid). The sensors were successfully employed for IVB determination in the pharmaceutical formulations (Savapran®).

Atomic layer deposition of Pd nanoparticles on self-supported carbon-Ni/NiO-Pd nanofiber electrodes for electrochemical hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions

The most critical challenge in hydrogen fuel production is to develop efficient, eco-friendly, low-cost electrocatalysts for water splitting. In this study, self-supported carbon nanofiber (CNF) electrodes decorated with nickel/nickel oxide (Ni/NiO) and palladium (Pd) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by combining electrospinning, peroxidation, and thermal carbonation with atomic layer deposition (ALD), and then employed for hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). The best CNF-Ni/NiO-Pd electrode displayed the lowest overpotential (63 mV and 1.6 V at j = 10 mA cm^-2), a remarkably small Tafel slope (72 and 272 mV dec^-1), and consequent exchange current density (1.15 and 22.4 mA cm^-2) during HER and OER, respectively. The high chemical stability and improved electrocatalytic performance of the prepared electrodes can be explained by CNF functionalization via Ni/NiO NP encapsulation, the formation of graphitic layers that cover and protect the Ni/NiO NPs from corrosion, and ALD of Pd NPs at the surface of the self-supported CNF-Ni/NiO electrodes.

Toner Waste Powder (TWP) as a Filler for Polymer Blends (LDPE/HIPS) for Enhanced Electrical Conductivity

Rapid urbanization proportionally increases the waste products which force humankind to find a suitable waste management system. This study aims at identifying the possibility of using toner waste powder (TWP) as a filler for fabricating polymer composites for enhanced electrical conductivity of polymer blends. TWP was successfully incorporated into a polymer blend of low-density polyethylene/high impact polystyrene (LDPE/HIPS) at a high loading percentage of up to 20 wt %. Elemental analysis (SEM-EDS and XRF) showed that the main constituents of TWP are carbon and iron with traces of other metals such as Ca, Cs, Ti, Mn, Si. The electrical conductivity of LDPE/HIPS is significantly enhanced by loading the TWP into the polymer blend. The addition of TWP to LDPE/HIPS blend decreases the electrical resistivity of the LDPE/HIPS/TWP composite to ~2.9 × 107 Ohm.cm at 10 wt % of TWP, which is several orders of magnitude lower than that of the neat blend with maintaining the thermal stability of the polymer composite. The prepared polymer composite is lightweight and shows electrical conductivity, thus it can have potential applications in electronic materials and automotive industries.

A review of nanostructured surfaces and materials for dental implants: surface coating, patterning and functionalization for improved performance

The emerging field of nanostructured implants has enormous scope in the areas of medical science and dental implants. Surface nanofeatures provide significant potential solutions to medical problems by the introduction of better biomaterials, improved implant design, and surface engineering techniques such as coating, patterning, functionalization and molecular grafting at the nanoscale. This review is of an interdisciplinary nature, addressing the history and development of dental implants and the emerging area of nanotechnology in dental implants. After a brief introduction to nanotechnology in dental implants and the main classes of dental implants, an overview of different types of nanomaterials (i.e. metals, metal oxides, ceramics, polymers and hydrides) used in dental implant together with their unique properties, the influence of elemental compositions, and surface morphologies and possible applications are presented from a chemical point of view. In the core of this review, the dental implant materials, physical and chemical fabrication techniques and the role of nanotechnology in achieving ideal dental implants have been discussed. Finally, the critical parameters in dental implant design and available data on the current dental implant surfaces that use nanotopography in clinical dentistry have been discussed.
