Health beliefs and their sources in Korean and Japanese nurses: A Q-methodology pilot study

Information flow and nursing care during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic

AIMS

This study aimed to understand the dissemination of information relating to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and its impact on nursing care in the early phase of transmission.

BACKGROUND

COVID-19 has spread globally, causing an unprecedentedly large number of casualties. Nurses face challenges in dealing with patients with COVID-19 with limited information about the pathogen.

DESIGN

This qualitative study followed the COREQ guidelines.

METHODS

Fifteen nurses were recruited from two university hospitals in South Korea using a snowballing technique for in-depth interviews in May 2020. All interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Content analysis was performed on the interview data.

RESULTS

Two themes emerged: access to COVID-19 information and the impact of information on nursing care. The categories of access to COVID-19 information were lack of nursing-specific information, limited information cascading from top management and confusion due to varying points of view. The categories of the impact of information on nursing care were unprepared management that aggravates exhaustion, lack of personal protective equipment that creates anxiety and being a nurse leader to overcome the pandemic.

CONCLUSION

During a pandemic of emerging infectious diseases, nurses should have access to up-to-date information tailored to their working environment. Human resources, material resources and systematic support are needed for nurses who provide care for patients with an infectious disease.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

A collaborative interprofessional education system for emerging infectious diseases is needed for effective communication and consistent care during a pandemic. Nurse leaders should be prepared to deliver profession-specific information for standardised care and respond to nursing management needs by using resources and tailoring the workforce.

Is Prick of Conscience Associated With the Sensation of Physical Prick?

"Prick of conscience" is a phrase to express feelings of guilt in both English and Korean. Particularly in South Korea, guilt is metaphorically associated with a sense of touch by pricking. Koreans commonly express feelings of guilt by using the metaphor, "It pricks my conscience." Across three studies, we examined whether prick of conscience (i.e., feelings of guilt) is grounded in bodily experiences of physical prick (e.g., a needle prick), using a sample of Koreans. Participants who recalled past unethical acts were less likely to choose a needle prick rather than medication as a treatment for indigestion, whereas those who recalled ethical acts presented no significant difference in their willingness to receive either treatment (Study 1). Participants who decided to lie sensed the finger prick deeper and felt more pain as compared to those in the truth group or the control group (Study 2). Lastly, participants who had the finger prick rendered harsher moral judgments than participants in the control condition (Study 3). In line with an embodied cognition framework, these findings suggest that prick of conscience is not just a linguistic metaphor but can be embodied as physical sensations in forms of pricking.

Health Beliefs of Nurses in Northern Thailand: A Q-Methodology Study

Introduction: Northern Thailand has a distinct culture and set of health beliefs. Nurses' beliefs influence approaches to care affecting health care outcomes. This study explored the content, origin, and sociocultural influences on health beliefs of Northern Thai nurses and how they influence clinical practice and education. Method: Q-methodology was used in this study. Data were collected with interviews using Q-cards, Q-sort distribution board, and a semistructured interview guide. Results: Data were collected from 30 clinical nurses and 30 nurses working in academia. Q-factor analysis produced three factors accounting for 48% of variance: personal experience, Thai and Buddhist beliefs, and contemporary beliefs. Discussion: Participants who felt strongly rooted in their culture and beliefs were homogeneous in recognizing the need for evidence-based practice. Nurses aware of the nature and sources of their beliefs and those of patients are well-placed to balance maintenance of cultural traditions with the need to provide evidence-based practice.

Nursing students' alternative beliefs regarding care for patients suffering from depression

Depression is an illness that constitutes a major challenge for Public Health worldwide. Therefore, there is a clear need to receive training to care for this type of patient. This study sets out to identify alternative non-scientific beliefs among nursing students regarding the topic of depression after studying the module of Psychopathology. This study enrolled 102 third year undergraduate nursing students. The students resolved a case on an individual basis in written form which was analysed qualitatively. In this study, we have found that, despite having undergone information-transfer educational training in relation to the physiopathology of depression, nursing students persist in holding unscientific beliefs about this condition. On the basis that the opinions of nurses about depression can influence the care of their future patients, it is important to consider these alternative beliefs as learning difficulties in order to design an effective teaching instruction.

Baccalaureate nursing students' perspectives of peer tutoring in simulation laboratory, a Q methodology study

OBJECTIVES

The study aim was to identify the perceived perspectives of baccalaureate nursing students toward the peer tutoring in the simulation laboratory. Insight into the nursing students' experiences and baseline data related to their perception of peer tutoring will assist to improve nursing education.

DESIGN

Q methodology was applied to explore the students' perspectives of peer tutoring in the simulation laboratory.

PARTICIPANTS

A convenience P-sample of 40 baccalaureate nursing students was used.

METHOD

Fifty-eight selected Q statements from each participant were classified into the shape of a normal distribution using an 11-point bipolar scale form with a range from -5 to +5. PQ Method software analyzed the collected data.

RESULTS

Three discrete factors emerged: Factor I ("Facilitate or empower" knowledge acquisition), Factor II ("Safety Net" Support environment), and Factor III ("Mentoring" learn how to learn).

CONCLUSIONS

The findings of this study support and indicate that peer tutoring is an effective supplementary strategy to promote baccalaureate students' knowledge acquisition, establishing a supportive safety net and facilitating their abilities to learn in the simulation laboratory.

Practical Issues of Conducting a Q Methodology Study: Lessons Learned From a Cross-cultural Study

This article advances nursing research by presenting the methodological challenges experienced in conducting a multination Q-methodology study. This article critically analyzes the relevance of the methodology for cross-cultural and nursing research and the challenges that led to specific responses by the investigators. The use of focus groups with key stakeholders supplemented the Q-analysis results. The authors discuss practical issues and shared innovative approaches and provide best-practice suggestions on the use of this flexible methodology. Q methodology has the versatility to explore complexities of contemporary nursing practice and cross-cultural health research.
