The relationship between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and arterial stiffness in a Taiwanese population

Association Between Triglycerides, High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, and Their Ratio With the Pulse Wave Velocity in Adults From the ELSA-Brasil Study

Atherogenic dyslipidemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and the triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein (TG/HDL-C) ratio with carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV), a marker of vascular stiffness. Anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical data from 13,732 adults were used to assess this association. Individuals within the third TG/HDL-C tertile presented worse anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical profiles as compared with the participants in the lower TG/HDL-C tertile. There was a linear association between TG, HDL-C, and TG/HDL-C ratio and cf-PWV in both men and women (stronger in women). After adjustment for confounders, lower levels of HDL-C were associated with increased cf-PWV in men (9.63 ± .02 m/s) and women (8.90 ± .03 m/s). However, TG was not significantly associated with cf-PWV after adjustment, regardless of sex. An increased TG/HDL-C ratio is associated with higher cf-PWV only in women (9.01 ± .03 m/s), but after adjustment for HDL-C levels, the association was non-significant (8.99 ± .03 m/s). These results highlight the stronger association of HDL-C with arterial stiffness, and that the association of TG/HDL-C with cf-PWV is dependent on HDL-C.

Higher platelet count, even within normal range, is associated with increased arterial stiffness in young and middle-aged adults

Background: Platelet counts and mean platelet volume (MPV) are related to cardiovascular disease, but a thorough investigation into the connection between increased arterial stiffness, MPV, and platelet counts is lacking. This study aimed to explore the association of platelet count and MPV with arterial stiffness in young and middle-aged adults.

Methods: A total of 2464 participants who underwent health checkups at National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Taiwan from November 2018 to December 2019 were included. We excluded participants aged <18 or >50 years; who are pregnant; on medication for dyslipidemia; with abnormal platelet count, incomplete data, and past history of hematologic disorders. We examined the association of platelet counts and MPV values with brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) levels and increased arterial stiffness.

Results: Platelet count was significantly higher in participants with increased arterial stiffness than in those without. The multiple linear regression model revealed that platelet counts were positively associated with baPWV levels (β = 1.88, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.96 to 2.80). In the binary logistic regression analysis, subjects in the higher platelet counts quartiles had a higher risk of developing increased arterial stiffness (Q2 vs. Q1: odds ratio (OR): 1.54, 95% CI: 1.05 to 2.27; Q3 vs. Q1: OR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.06 to 2.33; and Q4 vs. Q1: OR: 2.23, 95% CI: 1.50 to 3.30). In contrast, MPV levels were not associated with arterial stiffness.

Conclusions: Platelet count in midlife was positively associated with baPWV levels. Participants in higher platelet quartiles were at risk for increased arterial stiffness.

SERUM LIPID PROFILE AND ARTERIAL STIFFNESS IN NON-DIPPERS

Background. A non-dipping blood pressure profile (NDP) is associated with increased arterial stiffness and other cardiovascular target organ damage. Serum lipid profiles have been shown to be important determinants of arterial stiffness. Objective. The aim of the research was to assess serum lipid profiles and arterial stiffness in non-dippers. Methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted involving 796 (288 males and 508 females) participants of black African origin. A twenty-four-hour ambulatory BP monitoring was done using a Spacelabs 90207 (Spacelabs Inc., Redmond, Washington, USA) monitor. Carotid-Femoral pulse wave velocity measurements were performed using a high fidelity SPC-301 micromanometer (Millar instruments Inc., Houston, TX). Results. Of the 288 males, 140 were classified as non-dippers. Of the 508 females, 273 were classified as non-dippers. In the general population, males had higher triglycerides when compared with females 1.46±0.96 vs 1.13±1.02, p<0.0001. Additionally, dipper males had higher serum TRGL when compared with dipper females 1.32±0.98 vs 1.06±0.58, p = 0.0012. Non-dipper males also had higher serum TRGL when compared with non-dipper females 1.61±2.05 vs 1.19±1.14, p=0.0078. Serum HDLc was lower in the non-dipper male group when compared to the non-dipper female group (p=0.008). In both male and female groups, non-dippers had higher CFPWV when compared with dippers; 7.53±3.60 vs 5.74±2.47, p<0.0001 and 6.64±2.52 vs 5.98±2.23, p=0.0021 respectively. However, non-dipper males had significantly higher CFPWV when compared with non-dipper females (7.53±3.60 vs 6.64±2.52, p=0.0031). Conclusions. Therapies targeting a reduction of serum triglycerides levels might be beneficial in improving arterial compliance with or without the presence of non-dipping.

Prediction of Alzheimer's disease with serum lipid levels in Asian individuals: a meta-analysis

Background: The serum lipid profile has become a routine clinical test and used as an important predictor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), although its predictive value remains undetermined. Objective: To evaluate the role of serum lipid levels in predicting the risk of AD. Methods: Meta-analyses were conducted using Comprehensive Meta-analyses (CMA) software to investigate the association between four conventional serum lipid profile parameters and the risk of AD, focused on samples from Asian. Results: In total, 3423 AD patients and 6127 healthy participants were involved. The results demonstrated that AD patients showed higher LDL-C and TC levels (SMD = 0.27, 95% CI: 0.04-0.51, p = 0.02 for LDL-C; SMD = 0.25, 95% CI: 0.05-0.46, p = 0.02 for TC) compared with those of healthy controls. People with higher LDL-C and/or TC levels had an increased risk of AD (OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.07-2.51 for LDL-C and OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.10-2.92 for TC). Conclusions: This study provided evidence that serum LDL-C and TC levels were associated with the risk of AD in Asian individuals. The routine lipid profile may be useful for AD diagnosis, monitoring and treatment.
