Abstract
Background/Objectives: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a major global health concern that is intimately linked to neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and complicated metabolic abnormalities. Traditional antidepressants frequently fall short, highlighting the urgent need for new, safer, and more acceptable therapeutic techniques. Phytochemicals, i.e., natural antidepressants derived from plants, are emerging as powerful plant-based therapies capable of targeting many pathogenic pathways at the same time. Summary: This narrative review synthesizes evidence from preclinical and clinical studies on the efficacy of phytochemicals such as curcumin, polyphenols, flavonoids, and alkaloids in lowering depressed symptoms. Consistent data show that these substances have neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, altering neuroimmune interactions, reducing oxidative damage, and improving mitochondrial resilience. Particularly, polyphenols and flavonoids have great therapeutic potential because of their capacity to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, inhibit cytokine activity, and encourage neuroplasticity mediated by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Despite promising results, the heterogeneity in study designs, phytochemical formulations, and patient demographics highlights the importance of thorough, standardized clinical studies. Conclusions: This review identifies phytochemicals as compelling adjuvant or independent therapies in depression treatment, providing multimodal mechanisms and enhanced tolerability. Additional research into improved dosage, pharmacokinetics, long-term safety, and integrative therapy approaches is essential. Using phytotherapeutics could considerably improve holistic and customized depression care, encouraging new research routes in integrative neuroscience and clinical psychiatry.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nutrition, as a modifiable exposure, seems relevant to prevent depression. Several nutrients have been associated with a lower risk of depression in older adults, but longitudinal studies examining nutrient combinations are lacking. Therefore, we investigated the association between a posteriori nutrient patterns and the odds of depressive symptomatology (DS) in older adults over time. METHODS The sample included participants from the French Three-City cohort, a prospective population-based study focusing on adults ≥ 65 years. Nutrient intakes were assessed using a 24-hour recall in 2001 and Principal Component Analysis based on 40 nutrients, was performed to identify nutrient patterns. DS was assessed at each visit (up to eight visits until 2018) and defined by a Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression score ≥ 16 and/or antidepressant medication. Random effect logistic regression was performed to examine the association between nutrient patterns and DS over time controlled for potential confounding variables. RESULTS The study sample comprised 1,063 individuals (mean age 75.6y +/- 4.8) and 39.3% experienced DS at least once during a median follow-up of 11.5 years. Among 4 identified nutrient patterns, the first pattern characterised by high intake of magnesium, hydroxybenzaldehydes, stilbenes, dihydroflavonols, vitamin B6, lignans, tyrosols, folates, vitamins B3, B5, B1 and proanthocyanidins, was significantly associated with lower odds of DS over time (OR + 1 point = 0.85, 95% CI=[0.75;0.96]). CONCLUSIONS In this large sample of older adults, a mixed nutrient pattern was associated with lower odds of DS over time, offering valuable insights into nutrient potential role in mental health among older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, innovative chocolate, citrus and mixture flavoured tofu-based nutritionally customised, dysphagia-oriented, comfortably consumed, appetising, one-bite-sized finger foods, oriented to malnutrition, sarcopenia and frailty prevention in older people were created by using 3D printing technology. Developed products were characterised by evaluating chemical composition and physical properties and performing sensory evaluation among geriatric clinic residents (≥60 years). RESULTS The dietary composition of the developed foods was: 19-21 g (100 g)-1 protein, 6-8 g (100 g)-1 fibre, 8-9 g (100 g)-1 fat, 11 mg (100 g)-1 iron, 14 mg (100 g)-1 zinc, 70 μg (100 g)-1 selenium. Foods were also enriched with branched-chain amino acids, such as leucine, isoleucine and valine. All formulated foods were classified as level 6 by International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative classification. Chocolate-flavoured food was much harder (4914 g) with lower adhesiveness value (-33.6 g s), compared to the citrus- or mixture-flavoured foods. Older people evaluated all finger foods as very easy handled by hand, soft, easy to swallow, having a moderate flavour intensity and a weak afterfeel. Despite the fact that the chocolate food was evaluated as having the highest hardness and gumminess values by the instrumental method, this difference was not noticeable to the evaluators. However 7% of the participants said that 3D printed foods were sticky to dentures. CONCLUSION The results suggest that it is possible to create nutrient-dense comfortably consumed 3D printed foods, oriented to malnutrition, sarcopenia and frailty prevention in older people. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases accompanying metabolic syndrome comprise one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The medical community undertakes attempts to improve treatment options and minimize cardiovascular diseases' numerous consequences and exacerbations. In parallel with pharmacotherapies provided by physicians, nutritionists are developing strategies for diet therapy and prevention based on lifestyle changes, with high success rates. Consumption of specified food compounds included in various products with proven protective properties can be helpful in this regard. Due to the wide possibilities of diet in metabolic health promotion, it seems necessary to systematize information about the metabolically protective and cardioprotective properties of fiber, probiotic bacteria, plant sterols, folic acid, vitamins B12, C, and E, PUFAs, lycopene, polyphenols, arginine, CoQ10, and allicin. The aim of this review was to present the food compounds with potential use in cardiometabolic prevention and diet therapy based on the latest available literature.

Abstract
Introduction Poor food intake is common among elderly living in nursing homes, leading to micronutrient deficiency (MD). There are no recommendations for the management of MD in malnourished older adults. Methods We conducted a single arm, open-label, multicenter interventional study in institutionalized malnourished older adults to describe the effect of a 4-week daily energy and protein dense oral nutritional supplementation (ONS, 600 kcal, 30 g protein per unit) containing 50% of the recommended daily micronutrient intake on micronutrient status. Plasma concentrations of vitamins (A, B9, B12, C, E), magnesium (Mg), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn), and erythrocyte vitamin B9 were measured at baseline and after 4 weeks. Results Forty-six participants completed the study (age 87.4 ± 6.6). At baseline, the most frequent MD were Se (48%), Zn (35%), Mg (24%) and vitamin C (24%). Plasma concentrations of vitamins B9, B12, C and E, Mg, Se and Zn significantly increased and the proportion of subjects with at least one MD decreased (p = 0.006). However, after 4 weeks, 40% of subjects still had at least one MD. Discussion ONS consumption improved micronutrient status but did not correct MD in all participants. Our data suggest that the prescription of vitamin, mineral and trace element supplementation should be considered in institutionalized malnourished older adults in addition to high energy and high protein ONS.

Abstract
Edible insects (Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer, Gryllus campestris, Tenebrio molitor, Chorthippus biguttulus) are rich in nutrients that potentially inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE), but also improve cognition. The aim of this study was to evaluate four varied species of freeze-dried edible insects (purchased from a store); their nutrient composition, including fat, total phenolic compounds, vitamins, and antioxidant properties; and the potential inhibitory effect of AChE. An additional goal was to obtain olive oil with the addition of edible insects. Such oil was characterized by high oxidizing properties and showed high affinity to AChE. The results showed that mealworms and grasshoppers had the highest content of fats (PUFA/SFA) and phenolic compounds. These insects also showed a high content of vitamins, which correlated with the highest affinity for AChE. Therefore, they were added as a functional additive to olive oil. Olive oil with the addition of edible insects showed a higher affinity for AChE and enriched the olive oil with vitamin C and B vitamins.

Abstract
Malnutrition is associated with higher rates of morbidity and death in the older population. Depression or mental health is a major component of older adult malnutrition. The aim of the study was to measure the level of malnutrition and depression in older adults, as well as their correlated factors, such as dietary energy and nutrient consumption. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 108 older individuals living in two areas of Faridpur, Bangladesh. The Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF), Geriatric Depression (GD) Scale, and 24-h dietary recall were used to measure the nutritional status, depression level, and dietary nutrients, respectively. A total of 20.4% and 55.6% were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition, respectively. Around 81.5% of the study subjects exhibited a different degree of depression and 9.3% were identified as having severe depression. There was a significant inverse association between the MNA-SF score and the GD score (r = -0.684, p=<0.001). The average energy and protein consumption was 1387 kcal and 45.52 g, respectively; and energy and protein intake were significantly lower in the depressed group (1353 Kcal, 43.8 g) than in the non-depressed group (1530 Kcal, 52.4 g). An extremely low energy consumption (<20 kcal/kg body weight/day) was noted in 27.1% of the older adults. None of the participants in this study were able to meet the requirements for dietary fiber, calcium, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin D, and vitamin E. Specific nutrition-related intervention programs as well as social and familial support are recommended to improve the nutritional status of older adults.
