Abstract
The interaction of different dental alloys with the oral environment may cause severe side effects (e.g., burning sensation, inflammatory reactions, carcinogenesis) as a result of oral galvanism. However, the pathogenesis of side effects associated with oral galvanism is still unclear, and the effects of direct current and alloy corrosion ions are considered potentially contributing factors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to systemically compare the damaging effects of (1) galvanism as a synergistic process (direct current + corrosion ions), (2) direct current separately, and (3) corrosion ions separately on an in vitro mucosa-like model based on a cell line of immortalized human keratinocytes (HaCaTs) to reveal the factors playing a pivotal role in dental alloys side effects. For this, we chose and compared the dental alloys with the highest risk of oral galvanism: Ti64-AgPd and NiCr-AgPd. We showed that galvanic current may be the leading damaging factor in the cytotoxic processes associated with galvanic coupling of metallic intraoral appliances in the oral cavity, especially in the short-term period (28 days). However, the contribution of corrosion ions (Ni2+) to the synergistic toxicity was also shown, and quite possibly, in the long term, it could be no less dangerous.

Abstract
Metal alloys are one of the most popular materials used in current dental practice. In the oral cavity, metal structures are exposed to various mechanical and chemical factors. Consequently, metal ions are released into the oral fluid, which may negatively affect the surrounding tissues and even internal organs. Adverse effects associated with metallic oral appliances may have various local and systemic manifestations, such as mouth burning, potentially malignant oral lesions, and local or systemic hypersensitivity. However, clear diagnostic criteria and treatment guidelines for adverse effects associated with dental alloys have not been developed yet. The present comprehensive literature review aims (1) to summarize the current information related to possible side effects of metallic oral appliances; (2) to analyze the risk factors aggravating the negative effects of dental alloys; and (3) to develop recommendations for diagnosis, management, and prevention of pathological conditions associated with metallic oral appliances.

Abstract
In the last decades, experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the effects of radiofrequency (RF, 100 kHz-300 GHz) electromagnetic fields (EMF) exposure on the apoptotic process. As evidence-based critical evaluation of RF and apoptosis in vitro is lacking, we performed a scoping literature review with the aim of systematically mapping the research performed in this area and identifying gaps in knowledge. Eligible for inclusion were in vitro studies assessing apoptosis in mammalian cells exposed to RF-EMF, which met basic quality criteria (sham control, at least three independent experiments, appropriate dosimetry analysis and temperature monitoring). We conducted a systematic literature review and charted data in order to overview the main characteristics of included studies. From the 4362 papers retrieved with our search strategy, 121 were pertinent but, among them, only 42 met basic quality criteria. We pooled data with respect to exposure (frequency, exposure level and duration) and biological parameters (cell type, endpoint), and highlighted some qualitative trends with respect to the detection of significant effect of RF-EMF on the apoptotic process. We provided a qualitative picture of the evidence accumulated so far, and highlighted that the quality of experimental methodology still needs to be highly improved.

Abstract
Background: Clinicopathological studies have revealed some distinct anatomical variations in the clinical presentation of oral leukoplakia (OL). Screening studies have shown that gingival leukoplakia (GL) to be more common among the Japanese. Objective: A hospital-based case-control study was undertaken among patients diagnosed with OL to compare clinico-pathological data between GL and OL affecting other sites (n-GL). Methods: One hundred fifty-one subjects attending four city hospitals in Japan diagnosed with OL were recruited to this study. OL was diagnosed by World Health Organization criteria. They were interviewed for risk factors, clinical presentations were charted and investigated by patch testing for allergy to dental materials and by biopsy for dysplasia. Results: Eighty-eight with GL and 63 with n-GL were included in the study. GL lesions were predominantly white (93%) though n-GL leukoplakia had red (speckled) foci in 26%. Eighty percent of GL were seen in association with prosthesis or restorations. There were no significant differences by age or in tobacco and alcohol use in the two groups. Metal allergy test was positive in 58% of the GL but was not significantly higher compared to the n-GL (41%). Histopathological features showed that inflammatory cell infiltrate was predominant in n-GL group ( p = 0.021). Higher dysplasia grades were also found in n-GL ( p = 0.018). During follow-up, nine oral cancers (14%) were detected in n-GL group and among GL cases four developed oral carcinomas (5%) ( p = 0.043). Cox hazard regression analysis revealed that after adjusting for age and sex, GL group was found to have a lower malignant risk, with a hazard ratio of 0.89 (95% CI: 0.51–1.04) when compared to n-GL. Conclusions: GL was more benign compared to n-GL in Japanese subjects, though risk factors appear similar. Further study is warranted to ascertain whether trauma may play an important role for hyperkeratinization of gingival tissues and possible evolution of GL to proliferative verrucous leukoplakia in later years.

Abstract
PURPOSE Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue has a relatively high incidence of all oral cancers. Some studies have reported a relationship between intraoral dental prosthesis and SCC of the tongue; however, this relationship remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between SCC of the tongue and the positional aspects of dental prosthesis using a retrospective analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 439 patients with SCC of the tongue were diagnosed and treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Seoul National University Dental Hospital. Patients were treated over a 12.5-year period ranging from January 1, 2001 to June 30, 2013. Statistical analysis was performed to examine potential differences between the groups. RESULTS The number of patients with a crown and/or a bridge (134, 63.5%) was significantly different than the number of patients without a prosthesis (77, 36.5%). Even after accounting for different types of prostheses such as crowns, bridges, and dentures, no significant differences were observed between the position of the prosthesis and the location of the SCC of the tongue, with significance defined as a P-value less than .05 by the Pearson-Chi square test. CONCLUSION Patients with crowns and/or bridges exhibited more frequent SCC of the tongue compared with patients without these prosthesis. These data support the hypothesis that mechanical trauma and galvanic phenomena play a role in the etiology of SCC of the tongue.
