A rare case of chondroblastoma of the jugular foramen: Imaging and pathological features

Chondroblastoma is a rare benign tumor that typically arises in the epiphyses or apophyses of long bones in patients with immature skeletal structures. Occasionally, it presents in atypical sites such as the bones of the foot and craniofacial region. This report details the case of an 18-year-old female who experienced neck pain and was found to have a lesion in the left jugular foramen. Imaging revealed typical lytic and expansive bone destruction with invasion into the adjacent internal jugular vein. Initially misdiagnosed as a glomus jugulare tumor, definitive diagnosis of chondroblastoma was established postoperatively via histopathology. This case underscores the diagnostic challenges posed by chondroblastomas at atypical sites. Through detailed imaging, histopathological analysis, and literature review, this study aims to enhance the awareness of clinicians and radiologists regarding chondroblastoma and provides insights and references for the diagnosis and management of similar cases in the future.

Cartilage Forming Tumors of the Skeleton

Cartilage-forming tumors are a broad and diverse group of neoplasms frequently affecting the skeleton. Distinguishing between the members of this group is important because of significant differences in treatment and prognosis. Accurate diagnosis can be challenging because of similarities in their clinical, radiographic, and pathologic features. Immunohistochemistry and molecular tools are helpful in select instances. Therefore, careful evaluation and correlation of these features are essential in arriving at the correct diagnosis and appropriate patient management. This review provides an overview of the current literature, emphasizing helpful features in diagnosis.

Unveiling Enigma: Navigating the Diagnostic Labyrinth of an Atypical Medial Clavicular Enchondroma

Benign cartilaginous lesions called enchondromas usually appear in the long bones of the limbs. This case report, however, draws attention to an uncommon and unusual appearance of enchondroma near the medial end of clavicle. Because of the unusual location, the diagnostic process was very complex, which presented a challengefor the physicians. We provide the clinical, radiological and histological results that finally allowed for an accurate diagnosis. This example highlights the need of taking into account atypical location for benign lesions and highlights the necessity of a thorough diagnostic approach in unexpected clinical settings. Since the occurrence of clavicular enchondromas is a rare entity and can at times mislead the clinician, healthcare providers must be vigilant enough to guarantee a prompt and accurate diagnosis for timely intervention.

Fine needle aspiration of bone lesions: A tertiary care centre experience

BACKGROUND

Bone fine needle aspiration (FNA) presents several diagnostic challenges including limited sample material, reduced ability to assess the architecture, and lack of a standardised reporting system. The aim of our study is to present our experience regarding bone FNA.

METHODS

We performed a 6-year retrospective search of our archives to identify all FNA cases of bone lesions. Available data regarding patients' demographics, cytopathology, and surgical pathology were recorded. The FNA cases were then grouped into five categories (atypical, neoplasm-benign, neoplasm of unknown malignant potential, suspicious for malignancy, and malignant) and the risk of malignancy (ROM) was calculated.

RESULTS

A total of 341 FNA cases performed in 337 patients (M = 173, F = 164; mean age = 57.2 years) were identified. The iliac crest was the most commonly biopsied site (n = 134). The adequacy of bone FNA was 77.4%. The sensitivity and specificity regarding the nature of the lesion were 96.5% and 100%, respectively. The overall diagnostic accuracy of bone FNA was 77%. The accuracy of bone FNA for non-metastatic bone lesions including non-neoplastic lesions was 74%, while the diagnostic accuracy of bone FNA for a metastatic disease was 83.5%. The diagnostic accuracy for primary neoplastic lesions was 70%. The frequency (n,%) of cytomorphological categories were as follows: atypical (30, 8.8%); neoplasm-benign (6, 1.8%); neoplasm of unknown malignant potential (18, 5.3%); suspicious for malignancy (4, 1.2%); and malignant (145, 42.5%). The ROM in these categories was respectively as follows: 51.7%, 0%, 46.7%, 100%, and 99.1%.

CONCLUSION

FNA is a sensitive and specific technique for the diagnosis of bone lesions. In most instances, an accurate diagnosis can be achieved if adequate material, ancillary studies, and radiological correlation are available.

Chondroid Tumors: Review of Salient Imaging Features and Update on the WHO Classification

Chondrogenic tumors are typically well recognized on radiographs, but differentiation between benign and malignant cartilaginous lesions can be difficult both for the radiologist and for the pathologist. Diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical, radiological and histological findings. While treatment of benign lesions does not require surgery, the only curative treatment for chondrosarcoma is resection. This article (1) emphasizes the update of the WHO classification and its diagnostic and clinical effects; (2) describes the imaging features of the various types of cartilaginous tumors, highlighting findings that can help differentiate benign from malignant lesions; (3) presents differential diagnoses; and (4) provides pathologic correlation. We attempt to offer valuable clues in the approach to this vast entity.
