Abstract
The Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 (PDMS-2) has been used to assess the gross and fine motor skills of children (0-6 years); however, the measurement properties of the PDMS-2 are inconclusive. Here, we aimed to systematically review the measurement properties of PDMS-2, and synthesize the quality of evidence using the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurements Instruments (COSMIN) methodology. Electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL and MEDLINE, were searched for relevant studies through January 2023; these studies used PDMS-2. The methodological quality of each study was assessed by the COSMIN risk-of-bias checklist, and the measurement properties of PDMS-2 were evaluated by the COSMIN quality criteria. Modified GRADE was used to evaluate the quality of the evidence. We included a total of 22 articles in the assessment. Among the assessed measurement properties, the content validity of PDMS-2 was found to be sufficient with moderate-quality evidence. The structural validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability and interrater reliability of the PDMS-2 were sufficient for high-quality evidence, while the intrarater reliability was sufficient for moderate-quality evidence. Sufficient high-quality evidence was also found for the measurement error of PDMS-2. The overall construct validity of the PDMS-2 was sufficient but showed inconsistent quality of evidence. The responsiveness of PDMS-2 appears to be sufficient with low-quality evidence. Our findings demonstrate that the PDMS-2 has sufficient content validity, structural validity, internal consistency, reliability and measurement error with moderate to high-quality evidence. Therefore, PDMS-2 is graded as 'A' and can be used in motor development research and clinical settings.

Abstract
Although advances in obstetric and neonatal care have improved the survival of preterm infants, many studies document the increased risk of motor and sensory neurodevelopmental abnormalities that can hinder school progress. The aim of this study was to analyze the differences in gross and fine motor development in children born preterm and full term aged 3 to 6 years using the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales 2 (PDMS-II). Fifteen preterm and fifteen term children, matched for age and sex, participated in this study. They were evaluated with the PDMS-II scale. The scores obtained in the PDMS-II scale showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in all subscales except for the "grasping" subscale. No dissimilarities were found between children who attended an early intervention program and those who did not participate, nor was there any correlation between week of gestation and birth weight and motor development in preschool. The results obtained show that differences are found with respect to motor development, with lower scores for those born preterm compared to children born at term. No statistically significant difference was found between preterm children who attended early intervention and those who did not. No correlation was found between motor development at preschool age and birth weight and gestational age.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Body composition, specifically fat-free mass (FFM), of preterm infants is associated with improved neurodevelopmental outcomes. Little is known about body composition of preterm infants after discharge. Preterm body composition was measured by air displacement plethysmography (ADP) at two time points, inpatient (35-40 weeks postmenstrual age [PMA]) and outpatient (48-58 weeks PMA), with neonatal factors and neurodevelopmental testing at 4-6 months corrected age. We hypothesized increased FFM is positively associated with neurodevelopment. METHODS From 2007 to 2011, 510 infants admitted to the Medical University of South Carolina's neonatal intensive care unit underwent ADP. A total of 379 of 510 (74%) had anthropometrics at birth, an ADP scan with FFM, fat mass, fat percent z-scores, and an outpatient neurodevelopmental evaluation (CAT/CLAMS, Peabody Gross Motor). Variables were compared using multivariate analyses for body composition measurements. RESULTS The infants were 32 ± 4.8 weeks gestational age at birth with an average birth weight of 1,697 ± 932 g. Most (56%) infants received maternal milk at discharge. CAT, CLAMS, and gross motor scores had positive correlations with FFM z-scores at inpatient and outpatient ADP (p < 0.05). Receiving maternal milk at discharge was positively associated with cognitive (β = 0.22, p < 0.05) and language scores (β = 0.26, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Increased FFM is associated with improved cognitive, language, and gross motor testing. Maternal milk was positively associated with language and cognitive scores.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review was conducted to assess the quality of the evidence of effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in treating motor and language ability of cerebral palsy (CP). METHOD Medline, Cochrane library, Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and CNKI databases were searched up to July 2021 by two independent reviewers. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that were published in English and Chinese and met the following criteria were included. The population comprised patients who met the diagnostic criteria for CP. Intervention included the following: comparison about rTMS and sham rTMS or comparison about rTMS combine with other physical therapy and other physical therapy. Outcomes included motor function, as follows: gross motor function measure (GMFM), Gesell Development Diagnosis Scale, fine motor function measure (FMFM), Peabody developmental motor scale, and Modified Ashworth scale. For language ability, sign-significant relation (S-S) was included. Methodological quality was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. RESULTS Finally, 29 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Results of evaluation using the Cochrane Collaborative Network Bias Risk Assessment Scale showed that 19 studies specifically explained randomization, among which two studies described allocation concealment, four studies blinded participants and persons and had low risk of bias, and six studies explained that the assessment of outcome measures was blinded. Significant improvements in motor function were observed. The GMFM of total score was determined by using the random-effect model [I2 = 88%; MD = -1.03; 95% CI (-1.35, -0.71); P < 0.0001] and FMFM was determined by using the fixed-effect model [P = 0.40 and I2 = 3%; SMDs = -0.48, 95% CI (-0.65, -0.30); P < 0.01]. For language ability, the language improvement rate was determined using a fixed-effect model [P = 0.88 and I2 = 0%; MD = 0.37, 95% CI (0.23, 0.57); P < 0.01]. According to the PEDro scale, 10 studies had low-quality, four studies had excellent quality, and the other studies had good quality. Using the GRADEpro GDT online tool, we included a total of 31 outcome indicators, as follows: 22 for low quality, seven for moderate quality, and two for very low quality. CONCLUSION The rTMS could improve the motor function and language ability of patients with CP. However, rTMS prescriptions varied, and the studies had low sample sizes. Studies using rigorous and standard research designs about prescriptions and large samples are needed to collect sufficient evidence about the effectiveness of using rTMS to treat patients with CP.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the efficacy of interventions with active parent implementation for young children with cerebral palsy (CP) to improve child and parent outcomes in low-middle income countries (LMICs). METHODS Five databases were systematically searched. Randomised or comparison studies evaluating interventions with the training of the parent and/or home practice components to implement with their child with CP (<60 months of age) were included. The modified Downs and Black scale assessed methodological quality. Data were pooled to calculate mean differences and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). RESULTS Searches yielded 189 unique articles. 11 studies from ten papers of moderate to high quality were included. Parent-implemented general developmental interventions had a small negative effect on gross motor function compared to interventionist-implemented therapy. Parent-implemented upper limb training compared to interventionist-implemented neurodevelopmental therapy had a small positive effect on bimanual hand function. Parent-implemented functional feeding training had a large significant effect on chewing function compared to parent-implemented oral motor exercises. Parent-implemented interventions targeting general child development and feeding had mixed effects on parent stress outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Parent-implemented interventions in LMICs are promising to improve child bimanual hand and chewing function. Further research evaluating the efficacy of parent-implemented interventions to improve parent mental health is needed.Implications for Rehabilitation:Intensive motor training-based interventions with active parent implementation were effective to improve child gross motor, bimanual hand, and chewing function in young children with CP compared to passive, generic interventionist-implemented or health education interventions.Interventions with active parent implementation had mixed results to improve parent mental health, however, this was frequently not assessed. A consistent level of support and training provided to parents may be required to have a positive effect on parent stress.To further understand the feasibility of early interventions with active parent implementation in LMICs, data on adherence to home practice dose and session attendance and a qualitative understanding of contextual and child factors influencing parent implementation is needed.

Abstract
To examine the growth and body composition of small for gestational age (SGA) and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) very low birth weight infants (VLBW) and their outpatient neurodevelopmental outcomes. From 2006-2012, VLBW infants (n = 57 of 92) admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) had serial air displacement plethysmography (ADP) scans and were followed as outpatients. Serial developmental testing (CAT/CLAMS, Peabody Gross Motor Scales) and anthropometrics were obtained from n = 37 infants (29 AGA and 8 SGA) and analyzed via repeated measures analyses of variances. The percentage of body fat, percentage of lean mass, and weight gain were statistically significant between SGA and AGA groups at the first ADP assessment. There was no difference between the two groups in outpatient neurodevelopmental testing. Weight gain as "catch-up" body fat accrual occurs by 67 weeks of PMA. This catch-up growth is associated with normal SGA preterm neurodevelopment as compared to AGA preterm infants.

Abstract
Aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase deficiency results in decreased neurotransmitter levels and severe motor dysfunction. Twenty-six patients without head control received bilateral intraputaminal infusions of a recombinant adeno-associated virus type 2 vector containing the human aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase gene (eladocagene exuparvovec) and have completed 1-year evaluations. Rapid improvements in motor and cognitive function occurred within 12 months after gene therapy and were sustained during follow-up for >5 years. An increase in dopamine production was demonstrated by positron emission tomography and neurotransmitter analysis. Patient symptoms (mood, sweating, temperature, and oculogyric crises), patient growth, and patient caretaker quality of life improved. Although improvements were observed in all treated participants, younger age was associated with greater improvement. There were no treatment-associated brain injuries, and most adverse events were related to underlying disease. Post-surgery complications such as cerebrospinal fluid leakage were managed with standard of care. Most patients experienced mild to moderate dyskinesia that resolved in a few months. These observations suggest that eladocagene exuparvovec treatment for aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase deficiency provides durable and meaningful benefits with a favorable safety profile.

Abstract
The Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-Second Edition (PDMS-2) is a valid and reliable instrument used in several countries, including Brazil, to assess gross and fine motor skills and identify motor deficits and eligibility for intervention for children with and without disabilities. However, the analysis of PDMS-2 items regarding the unidimensionality of the model, order of item difficulty, and whether the items portray the children's developmental trajectories still lacks investigation. Therefore, this study aims to: (1) analyze the unidimensionality of PDMS-2, (2) verify the model's capacity to explain the variance in the motor function responses, and (3) identify the level of difficulty of the items for Brazilian children. Children (n = 637; 51% girls) newborn to 71 months (M age = 21.7, SD = 18.6) were assessed using the PDMS-2. The Rasch analysis was conducted; the indexes of infit and outfit, and the point-biserial correlations coefficient were analyzed. The model unidimensionality was investigated using percentages of variance in the Rasch model (40% of variance). Results indicated that (1) for reflexes subscale, 62.5% of the items had correlations with the factor above 0.60, and two items had unadjusted infit and outfit; (2) for stationary subscale, 83.3% of the correlations of the items with the factor were above 0.50, and one item had unadjusted infit and outfit; (3) for locomotion subscale, 80.0% of the correlation of the items with the factor were above 0.50; all items had adequate infit and outfit; (4) for object manipulation subscale, 79.9% of the correlation of the items with the factor were above 0.50, and one item had unadjusted infit and outfit; (5) for grasping subscale, 92.3% of the correlation of the items with the factor were above 0.50, and one item had unadjusted infit and outfit; and (6) for the visual-motor integration subscale, 73.6% of the correlation of the items with the factor were above 0.50, and six items had unadjusted infit and outfit. The items with unadjusted fit were removed for further analysis. No changes in reliability and separation of items and people scores were observed without the unadjusted items; therefore, all items were maintained. A unidimensional model was found, and the reliability and discriminant capability of the items were adequate, and all items should be used to assess children. The PDMS-2 is appropriate for assessing Brazilian children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the large number of babies born worldwide following intracytoplasmic sperm injection, concerns about the procedure's safety still exist owing to the use of suboptimal spermatozoa. Thus, follow-up of children conceived via intracytoplasmic sperm injection is highly recommended. We propose the use of parent-administered questionnaires to monitor the development of offspring conceived via intracytoplasmic sperm injection. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine whether male infertility treatment affects offspring development. STUDY DESIGN We compared obstetrical and neonatal outcomes and physical and psychological development of toddlers conceived via in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Once newborns reached 3 years of age, participating patients were sent a set of parent-administered questionnaires, including the Ages and Stages Questionnaires; Prescreening Developmental Questionnaire 2; Peabody Developmental Motor Scales, Second Edition; Social Skills Rating System; Parenting Stress Index, Third Edition; and Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 2-3. Child development was measured by the Ages and Stages Questionnaires; Prescreening Developmental Questionnaire 2; and Peabody Developmental Motor Scales, Second Edition, questionnaires, whereas Social Skills Rating System; Parenting Stress Index, Third Edition; and Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 2-3 questionnaires were used to measure child behavior. The child's developmental or behavioral outcome was considered "abnormal" when he or she scored below average in ≥2 questionnaires from the respective category. We also conducted subanalyses to assess the effects of male genomic integrity, DNA fragmentation, chemical exposure, utilization of surgically retrieved spermatozoa, and extended embryo culture to determine the development of a child conceived via intracytoplasmic sperm injection. RESULTS A total of 12,306 couples met the inclusion criteria for this study; 1914 of 7433 patients (25.8%) who underwent intracytoplasmic sperm injection and 451 of 4873 patients (9.3%) who underwent in vitro fertilization returned the questionnaires. Our comparison of obstetrical outcomes between the 2 groups did not reveal any significant differences in the mode of delivery distribution, with most mothers having uncomplicated vaginal deliveries. Furthermore, gender distribution, gestational ages, and birthweights were also comparable between children conceived via intracytoplasmic sperm injection and in vitro fertilization. However, children conceived via in vitro fertilization displayed impaired developmental characteristics compared with the intracytoplasmic sperm injection-conceived cohort (adjusted odds ratio, 0.72; 95% confidence interval, 0.5-0.9; P=.0004). There was no difference in child behavior. Furthermore, 3 cases of autism were reported, 1 case from the in vitro fertilization group and 2 from the intracytoplasmic sperm injection group, all conceived from couples with an older male partner. Ages and Stages Questionnaires outcomes were also compared for the offspring conceived via in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection by gender; however, no significant differences were observed. In addition, 5 separate subanalyses were then conducted exclusively for the intracytoplasmic sperm injection-conceived group. Levels of spermatogenic failure, DNA fragmentation, and chemical exposure did not significantly affect offspring development. Interestingly, although the length of embryo culture did not seem to influence child development, the abnormal behavior rate was significantly higher in children from the day 3 embryo transfer cohort (adjusted odds ratio, 0.4; 95% confidence interval, 0.05-0.34; P=.04). Children conceived via intracytoplasmic sperm injection from ejaculated spermatozoa displayed impaired developmental and behavioral characteristics compared with toddlers conceived from surgically retrieved specimens (adjusted odds ratio, 4.9; 95% confidence interval, 1.2-20.7; P=.05). CONCLUSION Most children conceived via intracytoplasmic sperm injection and in vitro fertilization are developing well without significant delays. Although the development of a child conceived via intracytoplasmic sperm injection was not affected by most of the variables assessed, those conceived from surgically retrieved spermatozoa were at a considerably lower risk of abnormal developmental and abnormal behavioral characteristics than offspring conceived from ejaculated specimens. However, given the small numbers of respondents available for many subgroups of interest, further studies of outcomes of children born from fathers with severe male factor infertility are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Peabody Developmental Motor Scales - Second Edition (PDMS-2) has been used by health and educational professionals to assess the gross and fine motor skills of children with typical development, motor and/or cognitive delays, and disabilities. AIM Investigate the validity and reliability of PDMS-2 for use in Brazil. METHODS For content validity, 13 professionals participated in the study. For construct validity, a sample of 637 children from birth until 71 months (0-23 months: n = 399; 24-71 months: n = 238) was assessed with the PDMS-2. RESULTS The PDMS-2 administered to the Brazilian population has psychometric characteristics equivalent to the original version. CONCLUSION PDMS-2 is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating Brazilian children's motor development and providing appropriate support for clinical and educational intervention plans and follow-ups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the impact of vestibular dysfunction on gross motor development in children with hearing loss. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase (Elsevier), Web of Science (Clarivate), and the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (EBSCO). REVIEW METHODS A systematic review was reported in concordance with the PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses). Articles on children with hearing loss who underwent at least 1 instrumented measure of vestibular function and had gross motor milestones assessed were included. The Downs and Black checklist was used to assess risk of bias and methodological quality. RESULTS Eleven articles were included in the systematic review. Three articles stratified quantitative results of gross motor milestone acquisition by severity of vestibular impairment. Over half of studies were case series published within the last 5 years. This systematic review showed that children with hearing loss and severe, bilateral vestibular dysfunction demonstrate delayed gross motor milestones. However, it was difficult to draw conclusions on whether milder forms of vestibular dysfunction significantly affect gross motor milestone acquisition in children with hearing loss. The reason is that most studies were of low to moderate quality, used different assessment methods, and contained results that were descriptive in nature. CONCLUSIONS This emerging area would benefit from future research, such as higher-quality studies to assess vestibular function and gross motor milestones. This would allow for better characterization of the impacts of vestibular impairment, especially milder forms, in children with hearing loss.

Abstract
AIM To develop a novel proxy-reported scale of motor function in infants and young children with early-onset neuromuscular disorders (NMD), entitled the Proxy Motor Outcome Measure (PMOM). DESIGN A mixed method design was employed, applying both qualitative and quantitative research. METHODS A framework technique using sensitivity analyses guided the development of the most appropriate and relevant subset of items, modelled after 30 neuromuscular disease instruments/scales. The PMOM was designed based on semi-structured interviews with 16 proxies; a focus group of 11 experts in neuromuscular diseases and scale development, 10 of whom also gave quantitative data using a two-round Delphi method survey; and cognitive interviews with five proxies. These processes were conducted between January 2014-March 2019. RESULTS Nine themes and 32 subthemes were derived from the semi-structured interviews. Five domains and three subdomains of potential items were identified by the focus group. An initial version of the PMOM scale was created with 121 items. Using the two-round Delphi method, 43 items met agreement on pre-defined requirements. The second version of the PMOM scale included these 43 and two additional items based on expert feedback. Proxies gave 114 suggestions on cognitive interviews, 99 of which were successfully addressed by the research team. The final version of the PMOM scale included 43 items. CONCLUSION We developed a preliminary proxy-reported instrument, the PMOM, to evaluate motor function in infants and young children with early-onset NMD. IMPACT Proxies hold a wealth of knowledge on their child's motor function during early development, which may complement clinic-based motor function testing. However, there is no validated measure of motor function that incorporates the observation of proxies of infants and young children with NMD. Future work will be focused on assessing the reliability, validity and responsiveness of the PMOM scale and implementing this tool in clinical studies.

Abstract
Background Increasing studies have focused on motor function/dysfunction in PICU survivors; however, most studies have focused on adults and older children. This study investigated gross motor developmental function outcomes in infantile and toddler pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) survivors and the factors associated with gross motor developmental functions. Methods This observational study was conducted in the PICU of the First Hospital of Jilin University between January 2019 and March 2019. Thirty-five eligible patients were divided into the dysfunctional (n = 24) or non-dysfunctional (n = 11) group according to the results of the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales, Second Edition (PDMS-2). Baseline gross motor function for all participants before PICU admission was measured via the Age and Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition (ASQ-3). The PDMS-2 was used to evaluate gross motor development function before PICU discharge. Results The gross motor developmental dysfunction incidence was 68.6%. Linear correlation analysis showed that the gross motor quotient (GMQ) was positively correlated with the pediatric critical illness score (PCIS, r = 0.621, P < 0.001), and negatively correlated with length of PICU stay (r = − 0.556, P = 0.001), days sedated (r = − 0.602, P < 0.001), days on invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV; r = − 0.686, P < 0.001), and days on continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT; r = − 0.538, P = 0.001). Linear regression analysis showed that IMV days (β = − 0.736, P = 0.001), sepsis (β = − 18.111, P = 0.003) and PCIS (β = 0.550, P = 0.021) were independent risk factors for gross motor developmental dysfunction. Conclusions Gross motor developmental dysfunction in infantile and toddler PICU survivors is more common and may be exacerbated by experiences associated with longer IMV days and increasing illness severity combined with sepsis. Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world. The physiological and psychological benefits of physical activity have been shown in children with cancer. However, almost one in two cancer patients do not follow the physical activity guidelines. The aim of this study will be to assess the feasibility of a physical activity program intervention in pediatric oncology and to assess the barriers and facilitators to the success or failure of this physical activity program. METHODS The VIE (valorization, implication, and education) intervention is a multidisciplinary program including physical activity, nutritional, and psychological interventions in pediatric oncology. This study involves one intervention group that will be followed over 2 years (evaluations and physical activity interventions) and one control group that will participate in only one evaluation. Children from the intervention group have been diagnosed and will be undergoing treatment at the Charles-Bruneau oncology center from the Sainte-Justine University Health Center (Montreal, Canada). The feasibility of this program will be measured through a comparison between sessions performed and sessions scheduled, while the security will be measured according to the number of reported incidents. DISCUSSION This study will examine the effects of exercise in pediatric oncology from diagnosis to the expected end of treatment (i.e., 2 years of follow-up). Currently, there are only a few longitudinal studies on physical activity and pediatric cancer. Physiological and psychological tests will allow a better knowledge of the evolution of the physical fitness and mental health of the patients during the period of care. It is necessary to document and provide complementary knowledge in the pediatric oncology field in order to engage the discourse with pediatric oncology health professionals to help patients during and after treatment. This is an important study in the exercise and oncology field to help patients and their family during and after cancer treatments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the physical development, incidence of common respiratory diseases, and motor development during infancy in preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). METHODS A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical features and infantile outcomes of preterm infants with BPD who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit between January 2012 and December 2015. Preterm infants without BPD were used as controls who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit during the same period and had similar gestational age and birth weight. Physical development, number of hospital stays, the incidences of pneumonia and wheezing, and motor development during infancy were compared between the two groups. RESULTS Compared with the control group, BPD infants had a significantly higher incidence of extrauterine growth retardation at discharge (48% vs 41%; P<0.05); BPD infants were more susceptible to pneumonia, wheezing, eczema and rhinitis; BDP infants also had a significantly higher number of readmissions due to respiratory tract infection (P<0.05). BPD infants had a significantly smaller head circumference than the control group at corrected ages of 3, 6, and 12 months (P<0.05). BPD infants had significantly delayed gross, fine, and overall motor development than the control group at corrected ages of 6 and 9 months (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Infants with BPD are susceptible to extrauterine growth retardation at discharge. Their head circumference growth is relatively slow. They are susceptible to pneumonia and wheezing during infancy. Moreover, they have delayed motor development when compared with those without BPD at corrected ages of 6 and 9 months.

Abstract
In response to the opioid crisis, the American Physical Therapy Association has strongly advocated for physical therapy as a safe alternative to pharmacological pain management through the "#ChoosePT" campaign and the dedication of a PTJ special issue to the nonpharmacological management of pain. Physical therapists not only play an important role in the rehabilitation of the nearly 2 million adolescents and adults addicted to prescription opioids but also provide care to infants born to mothers with various drug addictions. This Perspective article explores the incidence, pathophysiology, and risk factors for neonatal abstinence syndrome and describes the clinical presentations of withdrawal and neurotoxicity in infants. Discipline-specific recommendations for the physical therapist examination and plan of care, including pharmacological management considerations, are outlined. Nonpharmacological management, including supportive care, feeding, parent education, social aspects of care, and follow-up services, are discussed from a physical therapy perspective. Finally, this article reviews developmental outcomes in infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome and reflects on challenges and future directions of research in this area.

Abstract
Aim: To determine concurrent validity between the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, 3rd edition (Bayley-III) and the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales, 2nd edition (PDMS-2). Methods: Both assessments were administered to 184 preterm children at 18 months corrected age; standard scores for total score, gross motor, and fine motor were calculated for each child. Cross-tabulation and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) determined concurrent validity between the Bayley-III and the PDMS-2 motor domains. Results: High correlations were found between total motor (r = 0.88), gross motor (r = 0.88), and fine motor scores (r = 0.79). Both assessments had 93% agreement on classification for motor impairment; 23 children were identified by both assessments as having motor impairments, but 12 children were identified differently on each assessment (7 as impaired on PDMS-2 but average on Bayley-III; 5 as impaired on Bayley-III but average on PDMS-2). Most children with motor impairments were identified as 1SD below the mean on the PDMS-2 (27/30) and Bayley-III (18/28); however, the Bayley-III identified more children 2SD below the mean (10/28) compared to the PDMS-2 (3/30). Conclusions: Both the Bayley-III and PDMS-2 identify motor delays in children; however, clinicians should be aware of the concurrent validity as each assessment may lead to differing results.

Abstract
The Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) is widely used to screen for delays in motor development in high-risk infants, but its reliability and validity in Chinese infants have not been investigated. To examine the reliability and concurrent validity of AIMS in high-risk infants aged 0-9 months in China, this single-center study enrolled 50 high-risk infants aged 0-9 months (range, 0.17-9.27; average, 4.14±2.02), who were divided into two groups: 0-3 months (n=23) and 4-9 months (n=27). A physical therapist evaluated the infants with AIMS, with each evaluation video-recorded. To examine interrater reliability, two other evaluators calculated AIMS scores by observing the videos. To measure intrarater reliability, the two evaluators rescored AIMS after >1 month, using the videos. Concurrent validity was assessed by comparing results between AIMS and the Peabody Developmental Motor Scale-2 (PDMS-2). For all age groups analyzed (0-3, 4-9, and 0-9 months), intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for AIMS total score were high for both intrarater comparisons (0.811-0.995) and interrater comparisons (0.982-0.997). AIMS total scores were well correlated with all PDMS-2 subtest scores (ICC=0.751-0.977 for reflexes, stationary, locomotion, grasping, and visual-motor integration subsets). However, the fifth percentile of AIMS total score was only moderately correlated with the gross motor quotient, fine motor quotient, and total motor quotient subtests of PDMS-2 (kappa=0.580, 0.601, and 0.724, respectively). AIMS has acceptable reliability and concurrent validity for screening of motor developmental delay in high-risk infants in China.

Abstract
PURPOSE Survivors of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) face high morbidity. We studied the neurodevelopmental outcomes of CDH survivors at a single institution. METHODS CDH survivors born July 2006-March 2016 at a free-standing children's hospital were reviewed. Neurodevelopment was assessed using the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS-2) broken into gross, fine, and total motor quotients. Data collected included prenatal variables (liver herniation, defect laterality, observed:expected total fetal lung volume (o:eTFLV) on MRI), birth demographics (sex, race, estimated gestational age (EGA), birth weight (BtWt), 5 min APGAR, associated anomalies), and therapies/hospital course (HFOV/HFJV, ECMO, timing of repair, pulmonary hypertension (PHTN) severity, length of stay, ventilator days). Variables were analyzed using mixed linear modeling. RESULTS Sixty-eight children were included. Most patients had left-sided CDH (55/68, 81%) without liver herniation (42/68, 62%). ECMO utilization was 25/68 (37%). The mean [95% confidence interval] gross motor quotient for the entire cohort was 87 [84-91], fine motor quotient was 92 [88-96], and total motor quotient was 88 [84-93], representing below average, average, and below average functioning, respectively. o:eTFLV predicted fine motor quotient among prenatal variables. Associated anomalies and ECMO use predicted all quotients in the final model. CONCLUSIONS Associated anomalies and ECMO use predict neurodevelopmental delay in CDH survivors. Abstract
BACKGROUND It is difficult to engage young children with cerebral palsy (CP) in repetitive, tedious therapy. As such, there is a need for innovative approaches and tools to motivate these children. We developed the low-cost, computer game-based rehabilitation platform CGR that combines fine manipulation and gross movement exercises with attention and planning game activities appropriate for young children with CP. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to provide evidence of the therapeutic value of CGR to improve upper extremity (UE) motor function for children with CP. METHODS This randomized controlled, single-blind, clinical trial with an active control arm will be conducted at 4 sites. Children diagnosed with CP between the ages of 4 and 10 years old with moderate UE impairments and fine motor control abnormalities will be recruited. RESULTS We will test the difference between experimental and control groups using the Quality of Upper Extremity Skills Test (QUEST) and Peabody Developmental Motor Scales, Second Edition (PDMS-2) outcome measures. The parents of the children and the therapist experiences with the interventions and tools will be explored using semi-structured interviews using the qualitative description approach. CONCLUSIONS This research protocol, if effective, will provide evidence for the therapeutic value and feasibility of CGR in the pediatric rehabilitation of UE function. Abstract
Global motion perception is often used as an index of dorsal visual stream function in neurodevelopmental studies. However, the relationship between global motion perception and visuomotor control, a primary function of the dorsal stream, is unclear. We measured global motion perception (motion coherence threshold; MCT) and performance on standardized measures of motor function in 606 4.5-year-old children born at risk of abnormal neurodevelopment. Visual acuity, stereoacuity and verbal IQ were also assessed. After adjustment for verbal IQ or both visual acuity and stereoacuity, MCT was modestly, but significantly, associated with all components of motor function with the exception of fine motor scores. In a separate analysis, stereoacuity, but not visual acuity, was significantly associated with both gross and fine motor scores. These results indicate that the development of motion perception and stereoacuity are associated with motor function in pre-school children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The impact that congenital heart disease (CHD) has on the neurodevelopment of children with Down syndrome (DS) is unknown and potentially has implications for targeted early intervention. This study assessed the relationship between CHD that required surgery in the first year of life and neurodevelopmental, behavioral and emotional functioning outcomes in children with DS. METHODS A retrospective chart review of 1092 children (0-18 years) with DS who visited a single institution from 8/08-8/13 was performed. Children who underwent at least one of nine neurodevelopmental (cognitive, language, developmental) or academic tests were included in the analysis (N = 178). Cohort was age-divided into infants/toddlers (0-2 years), preschoolers (3-5 years), and school age/adolescent (6-18 years). Test scores of children with DS who underwent cardiac surgery in the first year of life were compared to children with DS without CHD. T test, chi-square and Mann Whitney U tests were used where appropriate. RESULTS Infants/toddlers with cardiac surgery had lower scores for receptive (P = .01), expressive (P = .021) and composite language (P < .001) compared to those with no CHD. Preschoolers with cardiac surgery had lower language scores and lower visual motor scores, although not statistically significant. In school age children with cardiac surgery there were no differences in IQ scores, language scores, or academic achievement scores compared to those without CHD. Also at school-age there was no difference in the incidence of ADHD, executive function or on internalizing and externalizing behavior scores. CONCLUSION Children with DS undergoing cardiac surgery during the first year demonstrated poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes as infants/toddler but had no difference at school age compared to children with DS without CHD. These results will guide early interventions to optimize neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with DS and will help with family counseling after CHD repair.
