The Relationship between Health Behavior and General Health Status: Based on 2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Patients with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain of 3-6-Month Duration Already Have Low Levels of Health-Related Quality of Life and Physical Activity

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

To determine the level of physical activity and health-related quality of life in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain of 3-6-month duration who have not been diagnosed or treated before.

RECENT FINDINGS

Low levels of quality of life and physical activity have been reported for patients with musculoskeletal pain with a duration of longer than 6 months. This study assessed the levels of quality of life and physical activity at the beginning stage of chronic musculuskeletal pain. Prospective cross-sectional study carried out at a musculoskeletal and sports medicine clinic. Eighty-five consecutive patients with muskuloskeletal (i.e., spine, peripheral joint, muscle, tendon) pain of 3-6-month duration, not diagnosed before, age 14 and older, and from either gender were recruited. Short Form-36 Health Survey and International Physical Activity Questionnaire long were administered during assessments. Scores on subscales of Short Form-36 Health Survey and total scores of International Physical Activity Questionnaire were used as outcome measures. A total of 85 patients with an age range of 15-86 (51.22 ± 15.99) were enrolled. There were 23 male (27.06%) and 62 (72.94%) female subjects. Forty-six (54.11%) patients had three or less painful regions; 39 (45.88%) had more than three painful regions. Majority of the patients had low scores on both Short Form-36 Health Survey subscales and International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Forty-nine patients had low, 32 patients had moderate, and 4 patients had high level of physical activity. Overall, females had lower level of physical activity in all age groups. All patients had less than optimal scores on all subscales of Physical Health and Mental Health scales of the Short Form-36. The female patients had lower scores in role physical and bodily pain subscales of physical health. Patients with musculoskeletal pain duration of 3-6 months have low levels of physical activity and health-related quality of life at the time of their first evaluation.

Clustering of Health-Related Behavior Patterns and Demographics. Results From the Population-Based KORA S4/F4 Cohort Study

Background: Health behaviors are of great importance for public health. Previous research shows that health behaviors are clustered and do not occur by chance. The main objective of this study was to investigate and describe the clustering of alcohol consumption, nutrition, physical activity and smoking while also considering the influence of sex, age and education. Methods: Using data from the population-based KORA S4/F4 cohort study, latent class regression analysis was undertaken to identify different clusters of health behavior patterns. The clusters were described according to demographics. Furthermore, the clusters were described regarding health-related quality of life at baseline and at a 7 year follow-up. Results: Based on a sample of 4,238 participants, three distinct classes were identified. One overall healthy class and two heterogeneous classes. Classes varied especially according to sex, indicating a healthier behavior pattern for females. No clear association between healthier classes and age, education or physical and mental health-related quality of life was found. Discussion: This study strengthens the literature on the clustering of health behaviors and additionally describes the identified clusters in association with health-related quality of life. More research on associations between clustering of health behaviors and important clinical outcomes is needed.

Association between Style of Living and General Health in Suburban Women: A Cross-sectional Study in South East of Iran

INTRODUCTION

In developing countries, suburban population is increasing. However, their health issues are rarely considered in studies. Socioeconomic and environmental factors in their neighbourhood can affect their lifestyle and health. Compared to men, women have fewer social resources and are more susceptible to an unfavourable environment, in general.

AIM

To investigate the association between lifestyle and general health status in suburban women.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This correlation, cross-sectional study assessed the lifestyle and general health, among suburban women living in Shirabad neighbourhood, Zahedan, Iran. Randomized one stage cluster sampling was used and 132 people participated in the study. Lifestyle Questionnaire (LSQ) and General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) were used for data collection. For data analysis, descriptive statistical methods, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multivariate regression analysis were performed.

RESULTS

Mean score of LSQ was 100.23±20.45 and mean GHQ-28 score was 28.46±16.41. There was a significant negative relationship between lifestyle and GHQ-28 total score (r=-0.619, p=0.01). Multivariate regression analysis showed that among predictor variables, education, sports and fitness and psychological health components had a significant relationship with GHQ-28 (p<0.001, p=0.01, p=0.002 respectively).

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrated that suburban women have poor lifestyle and health status. Also, it showed a significant relationship between education, sports and fitness and psychological health components and health. As a result, implementation of programs to modify lifestyle especially in the field of sports and improving the educational level could be useful in promoting women's health.
