Abstract
Ferula hermonis Boiss, is an endemic plant of Lebanon, locally known as "shilsh Elzallouh". It has been extensively used in the traditional medicine as an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of sexual impotence. Crude extracts and isolated compounds of ferula hermonis contain phytoestrogenic substances having a wide spectrum of in vitro and in vivo pharmacological properties including anti-osteoporosis, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-fungal, anti-cancer and as sexual activity enhancer. The aim of this mini-review is to highlight the traditional and novel applications of this plant's extracts and its major sesquiterpene ester, ferutinin. The phytochemical constituents and the pharmacological uses of ferula hermonis crude extract and ferutinin specifically will be discussed.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Several species of Ferula L. genus have been used in traditional Turkish medicine as aphrodisiac to treat male sexual dysfunction. Especially, roots and oleo gum resin of F. elaeochytris Korovin, F. communis L., F. assa-foetida L. and F. gummosa Boiss. were claimed to be used for aphrodisiac activity, menstrual regulation and treatment of gastric pain in Anatolia. Ferula L. is represented by 23 taxa in Turkey, 13 of which are endemic species. F. huber-morathii Peşmen (FHM), an endemic plant, is popularly known as ''helizan, çağşır''. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to isolate sesquiterpenoids from the roots of Ferula huber-morathii (FHM) and to confirm their aphrodisiac potential in male rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS In a preliminary experiment, the effects of aqueous (H2O) and chloroform (CHCl3) extracts of FHM were tested for their potential aphrodisiac activities in male rats. Then, sesquiterpene derivatives were isolated from the active chloroform extract of FHM roots (FHM-R) and characterized (TLC, 1D, 2D NMR, HR-MS and CD). Moreover, some of the isolates with adequate quantities were evaluated for their possible aphrodisiac effects on male rats. Single doses (10 mg/kg BW) of sildenafil citrate (SC, positive control), gummosin, mogoltavidin, deacetylkellerin, ferukrin acetate with kellerin, elaeochytrin-A and ferutinin were administered orally by gavages to male Wistar albino rats. Mount latency (ML), mount frequency (MF), intromission latency (IL), intromission frequency (IF), ejaculation latency (EL) and postejaculatory interval (PEI) were studied. In addition, copulatory efficiency (CE) and intercopulatory efficiency (ICE) were calculated. RESULTS The preliminary experiment revealed that the chloroform extract was the main source of the active compounds as it showed the higher aphrodisiac activity while the aqueous extract was found to be inactive. Eleven sesquiterpene derivatives, viz. gummosin, mogoltavidin, farnesiferol A, deacetylkellerin, ferukrin acetate, kellerin, teuclatriol, feruhermonin C, ferutinin, elaeochytrin A and teferidin, were isolated from the FHM-CHCl3 extract. Oral administration of deacetylkellerin, elaeochytrin-A and ferutinin significantly increased MF and IF. The ML and IL were significantly reduced, and ejaculation latencies were prolonged. Administration of these sesquiterpenoids also reduced the PEI. The present results revealed that ferutinin was the most effective aphrodisiac compound compared to other sesquiterpenoids. The results of 10 mg/kg of ferutinin are comparable to SC, the positive control. The results revealed that gummosin, mogoltavidin and ferukrin acetate with kellerin did not significantly alter the aphrodisiac parameters. CONCLUSIONS This study has established that the CHCl3 extract of FHM root contains sesquiterpene derivatives, especially coumarin ethers and benzoic esters. Findings of the present study demonstrate that the chloroform extract and some of the sesquiterpene derivatives significantly stimulates sexual behavior in male rats, thus suggesting that F. huber-morathii possesses an aphrodisiac activity.

Abstract
Drug addiction and its consequences on social life and behavior is currently a worldwide problem. Methamphetamine (MA) is one of the most abused psychostimulants in the Czech Republic. MA elevates mood, increases concentration, reduces appetite, and promotes weight loss. However, high doses and long-term abuse can induce psychosis, hallucinations, paranoia, violent behavior, and can lead to cardiovascular problems. Regarding its high prevalence and negative impact on health and social life, MA needs to be fully investigated. Previous studies have demonstrated the impairing effect of MA drug abuse on female behavior. However, MA's influence on male sexual behavior is not entirely clear. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of MA exposure on sexual behavior and spontaneous locomotor activity of adult male rats. MA was administrated subcutaneously at a dose of 5 mg/kg daily for a period of 30 days. The control group was exposed to saline (SA) at the same time and same volume. At the end of the application period, exposed male rats were paired with non-treated female rats, and their behavior was recorded for 2 h. Sexual mating behavior was described in terms of mounting frequency, intromission frequency, ejaculation frequency, sniffing time, intromission latency and the post-ejaculatory interval. Spontaneous locomotor activity in postnatally exposed male rats was studied using the Laboras apparatus. Acute doses of MA (1 mg/kg) or SA were administrated to probe the sensitizing effect of previous chronic MA exposure. Afterward, the animal was placed in an unknown environment and monitored for 1 h. Behavior was automatically evaluated using Laboras software by analyzing the following parameters: duration of locomotion (s), duration of immobility (s), rearing (vertical exploratory behavior), time spent grooming (s), average speed (mm/s), and distance traveled (m). Our results indicate that MA administration has a negligible effect on the sexual behavior of adult male rats. However, more experiments have to be performed to examine the influence of MA exposure on spermatogenesis and the behavior of offspring. Data from the Laboras test showed that MA exposure has a significant effect on locomotor activity in both acute as well as subchronic MA application. In conclusion, our results show that administration of MA in adult male rats does not affect sexual performance and motivation but does increase locomotor and exploratory activity in an unknown environment.

Abstract
Background: In Ayurveda and traditional medicines of different countries such as Iran, America and Brazil, asafoetida has been used as an aphrodisiac agent. Objective: The present study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of asafoetida on spermatic and testicular parameters in treated rats. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 male Wistar rats divided equally to five groups (one control and four test groups receiving 25, 50,100 and 200 mg/kg asafoetida respectively). After 6 weeks, a small part of the cauda epididymis of each rat was dissected, and the spermatic parameters were evaluated for at least 200 spermatozoa of each animal. Testis of all rats was harvested for pathologic examination. The testosterone concentration of serum was also determined. Data were statistically assessed by one-way ANOVA and value of P < 0.05 was considered as the level of significance. Results: This study indicated that the asafoetida significantly increased the number and viability of sperms (P < 0.05). Histological study showed that spermatogenesis process and numbers of Leydig cells were increased with increasing the dose, but the Leydig cells become vacuolated. Johnsen score in experimental groups was increased compared to control although this difference was not significant (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Asafoetida showed a positive effect on spermatic parameters although the histopathological effects on the testis were observed, particularly at high doses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The search for a remedy or a prescription that can enhance sexual function and/or treat male erectile dysfunction has been an obsession throughout known history. Whether it was an Eastern civilization or a Western one, religious or atheist, man's aspiration for a better or best "manhood" has been a history-time goal. AIM This review will discuss the current research done on the most popular natural aphrodisiacs and examine the weight of evidence to support or discourage the use of any of these substances to enhance sexual desire and/or function. METHODS Review of the current evidence on the use of natural substances as aphrodisiacs. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Efficacy of natural aphrodisiacs in enhancing sexual function in men and women. RESULTS There is little evidence from literature to recommend the usage of natural aphrodisiacs for the enhancement of sexual desire and/or performance. Data on yohimbine's efficacy does not support the wide use of the drug, which has only mild effects in the treatment of psychogenic ED. Although there's a positive trend towards recommending ginseng as an effective aphrodisiac, however, more in depth studies involving large number of subjects and its mechanism of action are needed before definite conclusions could be reached. Data on the use of natural aphrodisiacs in women is limited. CONCLUSIONS The current body of objective evidence does not support the use of any natural aphrodisiac as an effective treatment for male or female sexual dysfunctions. Potent men and men with ED will continue the search for natural aphrodisiacs despite the current disappointing data on their effectiveness. Care should be taken regarding the fraud addition of sildenafil analogues to natural aphrodisiacs.

Abstract
The present study was designed to examine the effect of ferutinin chronic administration on sexual behavior of ovariectomized non-estrogen-primed rats. Starting from 3 weeks after ovariectomy, female rats were orally treated with ferutinin at the doses of 0.2 and 0.5 mg/kg, daily for 4 weeks. Ferutinin's effect was compared with that of estradiol benzoate, subcutaneously injected at the dose of 1.5 microg/rat twice a week. Animals were tested for sexual motivation, receptivity and proceptivity after 1, 2 and 3 weeks of treatment and for paced mating behavior after 4 weeks of treatment. Before each experimental test, they received progesterone injection (500 microg/rat). Both dosages of ferutinin significantly increased the receptive behavior in a time-dependent manner, as well as estradiol benzoate did. Also proceptive behaviors increased in ferutinin-treated animals in comparison with control ones. During the partner preference test ferutinin was able to induce a significant preference for a sexually active male over a sexually receptive female. Moreover, ferutinin restored a normal paced mating behavior, which had been suppressed by ovariectomy. These results show that ferutinin exerts an estrogenic activity in ovariectomized non-estrogen-primed female rats.

Abstract
Ovariectomized (OVX) female rats were trained to traverse a straight alley and return to a goal box where they had previously encountered a male rat, a female rat or an empty goal box. The time required to run the alley was used as an index of the subjects' motivation to re-engage the goal box target. Subjects were tested in both estrus and non-estrus, first sexually naïve and then again after sexual experience. Female rats ran most quickly for a male target, most slowly for an empty goal box, and at intermediate speeds for a female target. Sexual experience tended to slow run times for all but male targets. Estrus enhanced approach behavior for males and an empty goal box, but tended to slow the approach toward females, both before and after sexual experience. This latter finding was further investigated in a second experiment in which sexually naïve OVX females were tested during estrus and non-estrus in a locomotor activity apparatus, a runway with an empty goal box, and an open field. Estrus produced no changes in spontaneous locomotion either in the activity box or the open field, but decreased run times in the alley and increased the number of center-square entries in the open-field. Thus, estrus produces increases in sexual motivation that selectively enhance exploratory, presumably male-seeking behavior, but not simple spontaneous locomotion.

Abstract
Plant extracts traditionally used for male impotence (Tribulus terrestris, Ferula hermonis, Epimedium brevicornum, Cinnamomum cassia), and the individual compounds cinnamaldehyde, ferutinin, and icariin, were screened against phosphodiesterase-5A1 (PDE5A1) activity. Human recombinant PDE5A1 was used as the enzyme source. Only E. brevicornum extract (80% inhibition at 50 microg/mL) and its active principle icariin (1) (IC50 5.9 microM) were active. To improve its inhibitory activity, 1 was subjected to various structural modifications. Thus, 3,7-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)icaritin (5), where both sugars in 1 were replaced with hydroxyethyl residues, potently inhibited PDE5A1 with an IC50 very close to that of sildenafil (IC50 75 vs 74 nM). Thus, 5 was 80 times more potent than 1, and its selectivity versus phosphodiesterase-6 (PDE6) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate-phosphodiesterase (cAMP-PDE) was much higher in comparison with sildenafil. The improved pharmacodynamic profile and lack of cytotoxicity on human fibroblasts make compound 5 a promising candidate for further development.

Abstract
In the present study, we evaluated the effects of single components of Ferula hermonis extract on female rat sexual behaviour. Ovariectomized rats hormonally primed with estradiol benzoate (1.5 or 10 microg/rat s.c.) and progesterone (500 microg/rat s.c.) were acutely treated by oral gavage with ferutinin, teferin and teferdin (2.5 mg/kg). Thereafter they were tested for: a) partner preference, b) receptivity, c) proceptivity, d) paced mating behaviour. In the partner preference test, the choice of the female for a sexually active male was not influenced by the different treatments. Similarly, during the paced mating test, the contact-return latencies as well as the percentage of exits from the male compartment were not different in control and treated rats. Therefore none of the three compounds showed the capacity to alter sexual motivation. On the other hand, ferutinin, but not teferin and teferdin, significantly inhibited female receptivity. These results suggest a primary role of ferutinin in the impairment of sexual behaviour elicited by F. hermonis extract in hormone primed-female rats.
