Abstract
Selective foraging has been reported in many wild and domesticated ruminants, yet modern livestock production systems rarely allow animals to express this natural behaviour. However, it is assumed that giving livestock the opportunity for forage selection positively influences their health and welfare. This study investigated the forage selection of individual dairy cows on pasture. Over one grazing season, a herd of 23 dairy cows was observed grazing on an experimental pasture in Switzerland, which consisted of different plant mixtures. The cows had unrestricted access to all mixtures and their individual foraging behaviour was documented by scan sampling. The four mixtures were rich in grasses (G), grasses and legumes (L), grasses and tanniferous plants (T), and grasses and herbs containing essential oils (E). The results revealed a partial preference for the L mixture at herd level across all grazing rotations (P ≤ 0.001). All mixtures were frequented, indicating that the herd utilized the array of available plants. Individual preferences varied and not all cows followed the herd's average pattern. Individual preferences shifted throughout the grazing season, but the pattern of this variability differed between animals. The findings demonstrate that dairy cows actively select from different pasture plants and that preferences vary between individuals and over time. Importantly, average herd preferences do not accurately represent the behaviour of all cows. Individual preferences should be considered when aiming to meet the foraging needs of all herd members.

Abstract
Plant secondary compounds (PSCs) were thought to be waste products of plant metabolism when first identified in the mid-1800 s. Since then, many different roles have been recognized for these chemicals. With regard to their function as defense, PSCs can negatively impact different cellular and metabolic processes in the herbivore, causing illness and reductions in feed intake. This penalty on fitness also applies to other trophic levels, like the microorganisms and parasites that infect herbivores and thus, PSCs at certain doses may function as medicines. In turn, herbivores evolved learning mechanisms to cope with the constant variability in their environment and physiological needs. Under this context, foraging can be viewed as the quest for substances in the external environment that provide homeostatic utility to the animal. For instance, herbivores increase preference for PSC-containing feeds that negatively impact infectious agents (i.e., therapeutic self-medication). Given that some classes of PSCs like polyphenols present antioxidant, antiinflammatory, immunomodulatory and prebiotic properties, chronic and sustained consumption of these chemicals results in robust animals that are tolerant to disease (i.e., prophylactic self-medication). Foraging plasticity in terms of the quality and quantity of nutrients ingested in the absence and during sickness may also influence immunocompetence, resistance and resilience to infection, and thus can be interpreted as another form of medication. Finally, self-medicative behaviors can be transmitted through social learning. We suggest that foraging studies will benefit from exploring self-medicative behaviors in chemically diverse plant communities, in particular when considering the vast diversity of PSC structures (more than 200 000) observed in nature. We then lay out a framework for enhancing the medicinal effects of PSCs on grazing herbivores. We propose landscape interventions through the establishment of resource patches or "islands" with a diversity of PSC-containing forages (e.g., legumes, herbs, shrubs) in monotonous rangelands or pasturelands, viewed as a "sea" of low-diversity vegetation devoid of functional biochemicals. Strategies aimed at enhancing the diversity of plant communities lead to heterogeneity in chemical, structural and functional landscape traits that offer options to foragers, and thus allow for balanced diets that maintain and restore health. Beyond animal health, such heterogeneity promotes a broad array of ecosystem services that significantly improve landscape resilience to environmental disturbances.

Abstract
Like humans, animals use plants and other materials as medication against parasites. Recent decades have shown that the study of insects can greatly advance our understanding of medication behaviors. The ease of rearing insects under laboratory conditions has enabled controlled experiments to test critical hypotheses, while their spectrum of reproductive strategies and living arrangements - ranging from solitary to eusocial communities - has revealed that medication behaviors can evolve to maximize inclusive fitness through both direct and indirect fitness benefits. Studying insects has also demonstrated in some cases that medication can act through modulation of the host's innate immune system and microbiome. We highlight outstanding questions, focusing on costs and benefits in the context of inclusive host fitness.

Abstract
In 1978, the theory behind helminth parasites having the potential to regulate the abundance of their host populations was formalized based on the understanding that those helminth macroparasites that reduce survival or fecundity of the infected host population would be among the forces limiting unregulated host population growth. Now, 45 years later, a phenomenal breadth of factors that directly or indirectly affect the host-helminth interaction has emerged. Based largely on publications from the past 5 years, this review explores the host-helminth interaction from three lenses: the perspective of the helminth, the host, and the environment. What biotic and abiotic as well as social and intrinsic host factors affect helminths? What are the negative, and positive, implications for host populations and communities? What are the larger-scale implications of the host-helminth dynamic on the environment, and what evidence do we have that human-induced environmental change will modify this dynamic? The overwhelming message is that context is everything. Our understanding of second-, third-, and fourth-level interactions is extremely limited, and we are far from drawing generalizations about the myriad of microbe-helminth-host interactions.Yet the intricate, co-evolved balance and complexity of these interactions may provide a level of resilience in the face of global environmental change. Hopefully, this albeit limited compilation of recent research will spark new interdisciplinary studies, and application of the One Health approach to all helminth systems will generate new and testable conceptual frameworks that encompass our understanding of the host-helminth-environment triad.

Abstract
Parasitic gastroenteritis (PGE) is one of the most important parasitic diseases that causes economic losses and health problems in ruminants. PGE causes a drop in milk, meat, and wool production in addition to decreasing animal fertility and sometimes leading to animal death. Conventional anthelmintics used for animal treatment are expensive, especially for farmers in developing countries. Moreover, the concern of anthelmintic resistance to these synthetic drugs is rising. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the anthelmintic activity of plant extract pomegranate (Punica granatum L) peel extract (PPE) against PGE infestations among ruminants. A total of 120 ruminants of different species (20 cattle, 12 buffalos, 68 sheep, and 20 goats) were examined for PGE eggs in their fecal samples. The animals under experiment were divided into four groups: the first group (negative control) was not given any drugs, the second group was given ivermectin (0.5 ml/25 kg bwt) (positive control 1), the third group was given albendazole (2.5 mg active principle/kg bwt) (positive control 2), and the fourth group was given PPE (200 mg/kg bwt). Fecal egg count (FEC) was performed on day 0 prior to the 1st dose of treatment. On day 15, an additional treatment (with the same doses) was administered and FEC was performed on days 7 and 21. Our results showed that on the 7th day of the experiment, there was an increase in FEC in the negative control group by 5%, while in the second, third, and fourth groups, there was a decrease in FEC with 95%, 90%, and 85% respectively. On the 21st day (7 days from the second dose), there was an increase in FEC in the control group by a 10% and 100% reduction in FEC in both the second and third groups. While in the fourth group, there was a decrease in FEC by 97%. In conclusion, PPE could be used as a safe, cheap, and effective natural anthelmintic against PGE.

Abstract
Plant extracts have been widely used in animal production systems due to the benefits promoted by their bioactive components, mainly through their antioxidant effects and positive effects on animal growth, health, and meat quality. We determined whether bioactive compounds (BC) from grape (Vitis vinifera), olive (Olea europaea), and pomegranate (Punica granatum) have beneficial effects on lamb growth while controlling gastrointestinal parasitism and reducing skeletal lipid peroxidation in muscle. Fourteen lambs (4 to 5 mo of age) were housed in individual pens and assigned to two treatment groups (seven animals/group), where they received: 1) a basal diet of beet pulp:soybean meal (90:10) (CONTROL) and 2) the same diet, but containing 0.3% of BC extracted from grape, olive, and pomegranate (BNP). After 21 d of consuming their respective rations (period 1), all lambs were dosed with 10,000 L3 stage larvae of Haemonchus contortus. Intake, production, and physiological parameters were determined before infection (period 1), after oral dosage with L3 (period 2), and during early (period 3) and later (period 4) developmental stages of infection. Groups of animals did not differ in their ration intake or average daily gain, either before or after the infection, or in their parasitic burdens estimated through fecal egg counts (P > 0.05). Lambs under BNP showed greater feed efficiency before infection (P < 0.001), but the pattern reversed after infection. In addition, the inclusion of plant bioactives to the diet did not have an effect (P > 0.05) on blood or lipid peroxidation in muscle or on hemogram, serum concentration of haptoglobin, and immunoglobulin E. These results could be explained by low dietary doses and constrained absorption or ruminal inactivation of these compounds. Changes in feed efficiencies suggest a negative interaction between BC in the diet and parasitism, which warrants further research.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the influence of biochar obtained from exothermic production of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) on sheep performance and diet digestibility and on preference for a ration enriched with this carbon-based material. Twenty-four lambs were housed in individual pens and assigned to one of three treatment groups (eight animals per group), where they received: 1) a 60:40 ration of alfalfa:barley (Control), 2) an isoenergetic and isonitrogenous ration with alfalfa, barley, and 2% biochar (BC), and 3) a simultaneous offer of the Control and BC rations (Choice). Lambs were exposed to two consecutive feeding periods (Period 1: 13 d and Period 2: 21 d), representing time intervals where the evolution of intake, animal performance, and rumen parameters were assessed; in vivo digestibility was determined during the last 5 d of the study. Ration intake did not differ among groups of lambs (P > 0.10), although during some days in Period 2, intake was greater for the BC and Choice groups than for the Control group (P < 0.05). Lambs in Choice had a lower preference for BC than for the Control ration (Period 1: P < 0.05; Period 2: P < 0.10), although they incorporated a substantial amount of BC (39 and 40%, for Periods 1 and 2, respectively) into their diets. No differences in body weight gains (ADG) or gain-to-feed ratios were found among groups of animals (P > 0.10), although dry matter digestibility and digestible dry matter intake was greater for lambs in the BC group than for lambs in Control group (P < 0.05). The ruminal concentration of the volatile acid acetate in Period 2 was greater for BC than for Choice (P < 0.05). During the same period, the concentration of valerate and ruminal pH values were greater in BC than in Control (P < 0.05). Thus, the addition of biochar to grain-based diets enhanced diet digestibility and influenced some ruminal parameters in lambs. Nevertheless, these positive effects were not reflected in significant improvements on ADG or feed conversion efficiencies. Lambs offered choices between Control and BC rations formed a diet with concentrations of biochar of ~1.2%, suggesting that these animals would tolerate such levels without reductions in ration palatability.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of Artemisia absinthium and Malva sylvestris on antioxidant response and histopathological changes in the abomasa of the Haemonchus contortus infected lambs. Twenty-four lambs were divided into four groups: unsupplemented lambs (UNS), lambs supplemented with A. absinthium (ART), lambs supplemented with M. sylvestris (MAL), and lambs supplemented with both plants (ARTMAL). Lambs were infected orally with approximately 5000 third-stage (L3) larvae of H. contortus. The experiment was conducted for 75 d (days), all animals were then slaughtered; and the abomasal tissues were examined for antioxidant parameters and histopathology. The concentration of malondialdehyde in the abomasal mucosa was lower in ARTMAL (p < 0.05), and the total antioxidant capacity was higher in MAL (p < 0.05), than in UNS. Increased mucus production was observed in the ARTMAL. The number of mast cells in UNS and ART was significantly higher than the number in MAL (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05). Plasma cell numbers were higher in ARTMAL than the number in MAL (p < 0.05). Abomasal tissue regenerated more frequently in ARTMAL. These results represent the first report of the impact of A. absinthium and M. sylvestris on antioxidant parameters and local immune responses of abomasal mucosa of lambs infected with a GIN parasite.

Abstract
Ruminant livestock-production systems are between a rock and a hard place; they are experiencing increasing societal pressure to reduce environmental impacts in a world that demands increased food supply. Recent improvements in the understanding of the nutritional ecology of livestock by scientists may help livestock producers respond to these seemingly contradictory demands. Forages are nutrition and pharmacy centers with primary (nutrients) and plant secondary compounds (PSC; pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals), which can provide multiple services for the proper functioning of agroecosystems. Legumes with lower contents of fiber and higher contents of nonstructural carbohydrates, coupled with different types and concentrations of PSC (e.g., condensed tannins, terpenes), create a diverse array of chemicals in the landscape (i.e., the "chemoscape") with the potential to enhance livestock nutrition, health and welfare relative to foodscapes dominated by grasses and other conventional feeds. These PSC-containing plants may reduce methane emissions and nitrogen (N) excretion from animals while increasing animal growth rate compared with swards dominated by grasses, and provide meat quality that appeals to consumers. Condensed tannins from sainfoin and saponins from alfalfa and manure of cattle consuming these forages also reduce N mobilization in soils, reduce nutrient leaching, and increase plant-available N stores for future use. The challenge for future pastoral production systems is to design multifunctional spatiotemporal arrangements of forages with "ideal" chemical diversity for specific ecoregions, aiming to achieve sustainability while increasing production goals and improving ecosystem services. Thus, the objective of this review is to stimulate the quest for chemically and taxonomically diverse pastoral feeding systems that optimize overall productivity; reduce environmental impacts; and enhance livestock, soil, and human health.
