Abstract
Biochar prepared from crop straw is an economical method for adsorbing bromocresol green (BCG) from textile industrial wastewater. However, there is limited research on the adsorption mechanism of biochar for the removal of BCG. This study utilized cucumber straw as raw material to prepare biochar with good adsorption potential and characterized its physicochemical properties. Through adsorption experiments, the effects of solution pH, biochar dosage, and initial dye concentration on adsorption performance were examined. The adsorption mechanism of cucumber straw biochar (CBC) for BCG was elucidated at the molecular level using adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherm models, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Results show that the specific surface area of the CBC is 101.58 m2/g, and it has a high degree of carbonization, similar to the structure of graphite crystals. The presence of aromatic rings, -OH groups, and -COOH groups in CBC provides abundant adsorption sites for BCG. The adsorption process of CBC for BCG is influenced by both physical and chemical adsorption, and can be described by the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating a monolayer adsorption process. The theoretical maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (qm) of BCG at 298 K was calculated to be 99.18 mg/g. DFT calculations reveal interactions between BCG and CBC involving electrostatic interactions, van der Waals forces, halogen-π interactions, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonds. Additionally, the interaction of hydrogen bonds between BCG and the -COOH group of biochar is stronger than that between BCG and the -OH group. These findings provide valuable insights into the preparation and application of efficient organic dye adsorbents.

Abstract
The antimicrobial activity of the novel coordination polymers obtained by co-crystallizing the amino acids arginine or histidine, as both enantiopure L and racemic DL forms, with the salts Cu(NO3)2 and AgNO3 has been investigated to explore the effect of chirality in the cases of enantiopure and racemic forms. The compounds [Cu·AA·(NO3)2]CPs and [Ag·AA·NO3]CPs (AA = L-Arg, DL-Arg, L-His, DL-His) were prepared by mechanochemical, slurry, and solution methods and characterized by X-ray single-crystal and powder diffraction in the cases of the copper coordination polymers, and by powder diffraction and by solid-state NMR spectroscopy in the cases of the silver compounds. The two pairs of coordination polymers, [Cu·L-Arg·(NO3)2·H2O]CP and [Cu·DL-Arg·(NO3)2·H2O]CP, and [Cu·L-Hys·(NO3)2·H2O]CP and [Cu·DL-His·(NO3)2·H2O]CP, have been shown to be isostructural in spite of the different chirality of the amino acid ligands. A similar structural analogy could be established for the silver complexes on the basis of SSNMR. The activity against the bacterial pathogens Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus was assessed by carrying out disk diffusion assays on lysogeny agar media showing that, while there is no significant effect arising from the use of enantiopure or chiral amino acids, the coordination polymers exert an appreciable antimicrobial activity comparable, when not superior, to that of the metal salts alone.

Abstract
This article describes the in vitro antibacterial and β-lactamase inhibition of a novel silver(I) complex with the sulfonamide probenecid (Ag-PROB). The formula Ag2C26H36N2O8S2·2H2O for the Ag-PROB complex was proposed based on elemental analysis. High-resolution mass spectrometric studies revealed the existence of the complex in its dimeric form. Infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies and Density Functional Theory calculations indicated a bidentate coordination of probenecid to the silver ions by the oxygen atoms of the carboxylate. In vitro antibacterial activities of Ag-PROB showed significant growth inhibitory activity over Mycobacterium tuberculosis, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa PA01biofilm-producers, B. cereus, and E. coli. The Ag-PROB complex was active over multi-drug resistant of uropathogenic E. coli extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) producing (EC958 and BR43), enterohemorrhagic E. coli (O157:H7) and enteroaggregative E. coli (O104:H4). Ag-PROB was able to inhibit CTX-M-15 and TEM-1B ESBL classes, at concentrations below the minimum inhibitory concentration for Ag-PROB, in the presence of ampicillin (AMP) concentration in which EC958 and BR43 bacteria were resistant in the absence of Ag-PROB. These results indicate that, in addition to ESBL inhibition, there is a synergistic antibacterial effect between AMP and the Ag-PROB. Molecular docking results revealed potential key residues involved in interactions between Ag-PROB, CTX-M-15 and TEM1B, suggesting the molecular mechanism of the ESBL inhibition. The obtained results added to the absence of mutagenic activity and low cytotoxic activity over non-tumor cell of the Ag-PROB complex open a new perspective for future in vivo tests demonstrating its potential of use as an antibacterial agent.

Abstract
This paper describes structural elucidation of a layered conductive metal-organic framework (MOF) material Cu3 (C6 O6 )2 by microcrystal electron diffraction with sub-angstrom precision. This insight enables the first identification of an unusual π-stacking interaction in a layered MOF material characterized by an extremely short (2.73 Å) close packing of the ligand arising from pancake bonding and ordered water clusters within pores. Band structure analysis suggests semiconductive properties of the MOF, which are likely related to the localized nature of pancake bonds and the formation of a singlet dimer of the ligand. The spin of CuII within the Kagomé arrangement dominates the paramagnetism of the MOF, leading to strong geometrical magnetic frustration.

Abstract
Antibiotics and nanoparticles, which are emerging contaminants, can occur simultaneously in biological wastewater treatment systems, potentially resulting in complex interactive effects. This study investigated the effects of individual and complex zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) and antibiotics (quinolone and sulfonamide), on the Shewanella strain used to remove phosphorus (PO43-), metabolic processes, as well as its complexing and toxicity mechanisms. The inhibition of PO43- removal increased from 30.7% to 100.0% with increased nZnO concentrations (half maximal effective concentration (EC50) = 1.1 mg Zn/L) by affecting poly-p and glycogen metabolites. The combined exposure to nZnO and ciprofloxacin/norfloxacin (CIP/NOR) had a significant antagonistic effect on the removal of PO43- and on the metabolism of poly-p and glycogen in phosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs), whereas the complexing of sulfonamide and nZnO had no significant additional effect. Thus, the complexing of nanoparticles and antibiotics exhibited different toxicity effects from the antibiotic structure-based complex reactions. These results can be used to improve wastewater treatment processes and reduce risks associated with wastewater discharge.

Abstract
The aims of this work were to evaluate the antibacterial and antiproliferative potential in vitro of the metal complex with 4-aminobenzoic acid (Ag-pABA) and a drug delivery system based on bacterial cellulose (BC-Ag-pABA). The Ag-pABA complex was characterized by elemental analysis, high resolution mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, which indicated a 1:2 metal/pABA composition plus a nitrate ion coordinated to silver by the oxygen atom, with the coordination formula [Ag (C7H7NO2)2(NO3)]. The coordination of pABA to the silver ion occurred by the nitrogen atom. The in vitro antibacterial activity of the complex evaluated by minimum inhibitory concentration assays demonstrated the effective growth inhibitory activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative biofilm producers and acid-alcohol resistant Bacillus. The antiproliferative activities against a panel of eight tumor cells demonstrated the activity of the complex with a significant selectivity index (SI). The DNA interaction capacity and the Ames Test indicated the absence of mutagenicity. The BC-Ag-pABA composite showed an effective capacity of sustained release of Ag-pABA. The observed results validate further studies on its mechanisms of action and the conditions that mediate the in vivo biological effects using animal models to confirm its safety and effectiveness for treatment of skin and soft tissues infected by bacterial pathogens, urinary tract infections and cancer.

The cell used in this work consists of a small cylindrical chamber containing aqueous sulfadiazine/sodium nitrate as the anode compartment inside a larger cylindrical chamber containing nitric acid solution as the cathode compartment. The ionic connection of two chambers is carried out through a solvent surface layer. In this study, the effect of the experimental parameters such as applied current density and sodium nitrate concentration as well as nitric acid concentration on the yield and energy consumption of AgSD is discussed. The proposed method is fast and green and has unique features including synthesis in a single step, and no need for a metal salt.

Abstract
Background Design and synthesis of new inhibitor agents to deal with pathogenic microorganisms is expanding. In this project, an efficient, environmentally friendly, economical, rapid and mild procedure was developed for the synthesis of novel functionalized isoxazole derivatives as antimicrobial potentials. Methods Multicomponent reaction between malononitrile (1), hydroxylamine hydrochloride (2) and different aryl or heteroaryl aldehydes 3a–i afforded novel 5-amino-isoxazole-4-carbonitriles 4a–i in good product yields and short reaction times. Deep eutectic solvent K2CO3/glycerol was used as catalytic reaction media. Structure of all molecules were characterized by different analytical tools. In vitro inhibitory activity of all derivatives was evaluated against a variety of pathogenic bacteria including both Gram-negative and Gram-positive strains as well as some fungi. In addition, their free radical scavenging activities were assessed against DPPH. Results Broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities were observed with isoxazoles 4a, b, d. In addition, antioxidant activity of isoxazole 4i was proven on DPPH. Conclusions In this project, compounds 4a, b, d could efficiently inhibit the growth of various bacterial and fungal pathogens. Antioxidant properties of derivative 4i were also significant. These biologically active compounds are suitable candidates to synthesize new prodrugs and drugs due to the presence of different functional groups on their rings. ![]() Electronic supplementary material The online version of this article (10.1186/s13065-018-0488-0) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Abstract
In this study, we prepared a series of silver sulfadiazine (AgSD)-loaded polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels via electron beam (e-beam) irradiation. Our objective was to explore the influence of e-beam irradiation on the chemical structure and crystallinity of AgSD and the antibacterial properties of AgSD/PVA hydrogels. Prior to irradiation, we mixed AgSD in PVA solution in 2 forms, either suspended in water (WS) or dissolved in ammonia solution (AS). We noted that nano silver was released from AgSD/PVA-AS hydrogels immersed in deionized water, while it would not happen in AgSD/PVA-WS hydrogels. Both kinds of AgSD/PVA hydrogels exhibited good antibacterial activities against gram-negative Escherichia coli and gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. And their antibacterial activity was not obviously affected by different dosages of e-beam irradiation. Moreover, the antibacterial activity of the AgSD/PVA-WS hydrogels was stronger than that of AgSD/PVA-AS. Accordingly, the cell cytotoxicity of the AgSD/PVA-WS hydrogels was higher than that of AgSD/PVA-AS. Our study results reveal that e-beam irradiation of PVA solution with dispersed AgSD is a simple and efficient way to prepare AgSD/PVA hydrogels, which might be an ideal antibacterial wound dressing.
