Fabrication of robust honeycomb patterned porous films by thermochemical cross-linking of polyimide

Highly Macroporous Polyimide with Chemical Versatility Prepared from Poly(amic acid) Salt-Stabilized High Internal Phase Emulsion Template

Macroporous polymers have gained significant attention due to their unique mass transport and size-selective properties. In this study, we focused on Polyimide (PI), a high-performance polymer, as an ideal candidate for macroporous structures. Despite various attempts to create macroporous PI (Macro PI) using emulsion templates, challenges remained, including limited chemical diversity and poor control over pore size and porosity. To address these issues, we systematically investigated the role of poly(amic acid) salt (PAAS) polymers as macrosurfactants and matrices. By designing 12 different PAAS polymers with diverse chemical structures, we achieved stable high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) with >80 vol % internal volume. The resulting Macro PIs exhibited exceptional porosity (>99 vol %) after thermal imidization. We explored the structure-property relationships of these Macro PIs, emphasizing the importance of controlling pore size distribution. Furthermore, our study demonstrated the utility of these Macro PIs as separators in Li-metal batteries, providing stable charging-discharging cycles. Our findings not only enhance the understanding of emulsion-based macroporous polymers but also pave the way for their applications in advanced energy storage systems and beyond.

Increasing the ionic conductivity and lithium-ion transport of photo-cross-linked polymer with hexagonal arranged porous film hybrids

High ionic conductivity, suitable mechanical strength, and electrochemical stability are the main requirements for high-performance poly(ethylene oxide)-based electrolytes. However, the low ionic conductivity owing to the crystallinity of the ethylene oxide chain that limits the discharge rate and low-temperature performance has restricted the development and commercialization of these electrolytes. Lithium electrolytes that combine high ionic conductivity with a high lithium transference number are rare and are essential for high-power batteries. Here, we report hexagonal arranged porous scaffolds for holding prototype polyethylene glycol-based composite electrolytes containing solvate ionic liquid. The appealing electrochemical and thermal properties indicate their potential as electrolytes for safer rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The porous scaffolds in the composite electrolytes ensure better electrochemical performance towing to their shortened pores (sizes of 3-14 μm), interconnected pathways, and improved lithium mobility. We demonstrate that both molecular design and porous microstructures are essential for improving performance in polymer electrolytes.

Bio-Inspired Silica Films Combining Block Copolymers Self-Assembly and Soft Chemistry: Paving the Way toward Artificial Exosqueleton of Seawater Diatoms

This review is in line with the principles of bio-inspiration and biomimicry in order to envisage a softer and more environmentally friendly chemistry. Here, the source of inspiration is a microalga from the oceans with the ability to build an exoskeleton of silica under ambient conditions. Following this model, this review is interested in different ways of creating porous silica films with a hierarchical porosity similar to diatoms. For this purpose, polymeric/hybrid/inorganic films structured in honeycomb using the breath figure method are reported. This versatile and easy to implement method based on the principle of rapid evaporation of a solvent in a humid atmosphere is widely used in the formation of structured films with micron-sized pores. In addition to this, the self-assembly of copolymer at the nanoscale can be addressed to obtain a hierarchically structured film. Following this structuration step, the degradation of a sacrificial block is then described from the most energy-intensive to soft process, allowing an added nanoporosity to the micron porosity of the BF method. Finally, hierarchical porous silica films are described using the sol-gel process, which is known as a soft chemistry process.

Effective and Efficient Pretreatment of Polyimide Substrates by Capacitively Coupled Plasma for Coating the Composites of Tetracycline-Imprinted Polymers and Quantum Dots: Comparison with Chemical Pretreatment

Composites of tetracycline (Tc)-imprinted polymethacrylates and quantum dots have been coated on chemically pretreated polyimide substrates (PIs) as fluorescent sensors. In this study, PIs were pretreated by capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) before coating the same composites on them. For the first time, to fabricate sensors by plasma modification of PIs, the CCP conditions, including plasma gas, flow rate, radio frequency generation power, and duration time, the fabrication details, including coating, baking, and stripping steps, and the sample loading process were optimized to perform a linear decrease in fluorescent intensity with Tc concentrations in the range of 5.0-3000 μM (R2 = 0.9995) with a limit of detection of 0.2 μM (S/N = 3, relative standard deviation (RSD) = 2.2%). The selectivity of the stripped PIs was evaluated by the imprinting factors (IFs) for Tc (IF = 7.2), other Tc analogues (IF = 3.4-5.3), and steroids (IF ≈ 1) and by the recoveries of 5.0 μM Tc from bovine serum albumin at 300 μg∙mL-1 (98%, RSD = 3.2%), fetal bovine serum at 1.5 ppt (98%, RSD = 2.8%), and liquid milk (94.5%, RSD = 5.3%). The superiority of the present plasma-treated-based sensor over the previous chemically-treated one in fabrication efficiency and detection effectiveness was clear.

Control of the pore size of honeycomb polymer film from micrometers to nanometers via substrate-temperature regulation and its application to photovoltaic and heat-resistant polymer films

Honeycomb porous polystyrene (PS) films with an aspect ratio of pore depth to pore diameter at approximately 1.0 were fabricated using the breath figure (BF) method. Two modes of water droplet coalescence in the pore growth were observed in real-time by optical microscopy. Pore size significantly increases with the increase in humidity and the decrease in substrate temperature. The porous pattern could emerge even at room temperature under high humidity of 80%. Boiling point and solvent density significantly influence the pore distribution and pore depth. Chloroform and tetrahydrofuran achieve more uniform hexagonal patterns than benzene and dichloromethane. Subsequently, to obtain nanometer porous PS film, the fast-evaporation BF process was designed by regulating the gradient substrate temperature and evaporation time, and porous mesoscopic PS film was obtained. The minimum pore diameter and corresponding pore depth are about 120 nm and 27 nm, respectively. Finally, the fast-evaporation BF process was applied to the honeycomb film formation of photovoltaic polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), and the heat-resistant polymers polysulfone (PSF) and polyimide (PI).

In Search of a Green Process: Polymeric Films with Ordered Arrays via a Water Droplet Technique

As an efficient technique for the preparation of polymeric hexagonal orderly arrays, the breath figure (BF) process has opened a modern avenue for a bottom-up fabrication method for more than two decades. Through the use of the water vapor condensation on the solution surface, the water droplets will hexagonally pack into ordered arrays, acting as a template for controlling the regular micro patterns of polymeric films. Comparing to the top-down techniques, such as lithography or chemical etching, the use of water vapor as the template provides a simple fabrication process with sustainability. However, using highly hazardous solvents such as chloroform, carbon disulfide (CS2), benzene, dichloromethane, etc., to dissolve polymers might hinder the development toward green processes based on this technique. In this review, we will touch upon the contemporary techniques of the BF process, including its up-to-date applications first. More importantly, the search of greener processes along with less hazardous solvents for the possibility of a more sustainable BF process is the focal point of this review.
