One-step solvent-free mechanochemical synthesis of metal iodate fine powders

Ca(IO3)2 nanoparticles: fabrication and application as an eco-friendly and recyclable catalyst for the green synthesis of quinoxalines, pyridopyrazines, and 2,3-dicyano pyrazines

In this paper, calcium iodate nanoparticles were first synthesized by the modified reaction of Ca(NO₃)₂ and KIO₃ in an aqueous medium under ultrasonic irradiation. The structure of nanocatalyst was then characterized by FT-IR, FESEM, EDX, XRD, and BET techniques. Afterward, the fabricated Ca(IO₃)₂ was applied as a nanocatalyst in the facile synthesis of heterocycles including quinoxalines, 5,6-dicyano pyrazines, and pyrido[2,3-b]pyrazines. For this purpose, the feasibility of the reaction in the presence of different catalyst amounts, solvents, and temperatures was first investigated. Next, the target compounds were obtained by the condensation reaction of aryl-1,2-diamines or 2,3-diaminomaleonitrile with 1,2-diketones in the presence of a catalytic amount of Ca(IO₃)₂ in ethanol or acetic acid solvents at ambient temperature in good to excellent yields. One of the salient advantages of this work is the synthesis of calcium iodate nanoparticles by chemical precipitation method and its application as a heterogeneous nanocatalyst for the first time in the synthesis of organic compounds. The other important benefits of this process are the use of an inexpensive, safe, stable and recyclable catalyst, high product yields, short reaction times, and easy isolation of the product in pure form.

Silicon Nanoparticles for the Reactivity and Energetic Density Enhancement of Energetic-Biocidal Mesoparticle Composites

Biocidal nanothermite composites show great potential in combating biological warfare threats because of their high-energy-release rates and rapid biocidal agent release. Despite their high reactivity and combustion performance, these composites suffer from low-energy density because of the voids formed due to inefficient packing of fuel and oxidizer particles. In this study, we explore the potential of plasma-synthesized ultrafine Si nanoparticles (nSi, ∼5 nm) as an energetic filler fuel to increase the energy density of Al/Ca(IO₃)₂ energetic-biocidal composites by filling in the voids in the microstructure. Microscopic and elemental analyses show the partial filling of mesoparticle voids by nSi, resulting in an estimated energy density enhancement of ∼21%. In addition, constant-volume combustion cell results show that nSi addition leads to a ∼2-3-fold increase in reactivity and combustion performance, as compared to Al/Ca(IO₃)₂ mesoparticles. Oxidation timescale analyses suggest that nSi addition can promote initiation due to faster oxygen transport through the oxide shell of Si nanoparticles. At nSi loadings higher than ∼8%, however, slower burning characteristics of nSi and sintering effects lead to an overall degradation of combustion behavior of the composites.

Synthesis of metal iodates from an energetic salt

Iodine containing oxidizers are especially effective for neutralizing spore forming bacteria by generating iodine gas as a long-lived bactericide. Metal iodates have been shown to be strong oxidizers when combined with aluminum fuel particles for energy generating applications. One method to produce metal iodates in situ is by using metal oxides and an energetic salt: aluminum iodate hexahydrate (Al(H₂O)₆(IO₃)₃(HIO₃)₂), which is called AIH. In this study, the thermal stability and reactivity of AIH with metal oxides commonly used in energetic formulations was investigated. Three metal oxides: bismuth(iii) oxide (Bi₂O₃), copper(ii) oxide (CuO), and iron(iii) oxide (Fe₂O₃) were investigated because of their different oxygen release properties. Each metal oxide powder was combined with AIH powder. Thermal stability and reactivity were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and reactive properties calculated to supplement experimental observations. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) was also used to identify the product species at various stages of heating corresponding to exothermic activity. Results show that AIH decomposition is entirely endothermic but, with the addition of metal oxide powder to AIH, exothermic reactions transform metal oxides into more stable metal iodates. This analysis provides an understanding of the compatibility of AIH with metal oxides and contributes to the development of novel energetic composites that have the advantages of both thermal and biocidal mechanisms for spore neutralization.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Iron and Cobalt Magnetic Metal Nanoparticles and Iron/Calcium Oxide and Cobalt/Calcium Oxide Nanocomposites

We report an environmentally benign and cost-effective method to produce Fe and Co magnetic metal nanoparticles as well as the Fe/Cao and Co/CaO nanocomposites by using a novel, dry mechanochemical process. Mechanochemical milling of metal oxides with a suitable reducing agent resulted in the production of magnetic metal nanoparticles. The process involved grinding and consequent reduction of low-costing oxide powders, unlike conventional processing techniques involving metal salts or metal complexes. Calcium granules were used as the reducing agent. Magnetometry measurements were performed over a large range of temperatures, from 10 to 1273 K, to evaluate the Curie temperature, blocking temperature, irreversibility temperature, saturation magnetization, and coercivity. The saturation magnetizations of the iron and cobalt nanoparticles were found to be 191 and 102 emu g^-1, respectively. The heating abilities of these nanoparticles suspended in several liquids under alternating magnetic fields were measured and the specific loss power was determined. Our results suggest that the dry mechanochemical process is a robust method to produce metallic nanoparticles and nanocomposites.
