Comparative Study of Composites Reinforced With SiC and TiB2

Nano-Surface Composite Coating Reinforced by Ta2C, Al2O3 and MWCNTs Nanoparticles for Aluminum Base via FSP

In the present work, an advanced technique was applied to coat an Al 2024 alloy with a surface composite layer reinforced with various nanoparticles. The surface of Al 2024 aluminum alloy was modified with Ta2C, Al2O3 and multi wall carbon nanotubes MWCNTs nanoparticles by friction stir process (FSP). An improvement in the surface of the fabricated nanocomposite due to the refinement of the microstructure grains was achieved. In addition, a significant improvement in the hardness and wear behavior was observed. The reinforcement particles were incorporated into double and triple hybrid composite particles to determine the most effective combination for the controlled properties. The results showed that for the composite reinforced with a double hybrid of Al2O3 and MWCNTs, the microstructure grains of the fabricated nanocomposite surface were refined by 40 times. The hardness was significantly improved, i.e., it was increased by 48% by incorporating the triple reinforcement (Ta2C, Al2O3, and MWCNTs) into the surface of Al 2024 aluminum alloy. The results of wear properties were in agreement with the results of hardness; the maximum wear resistance was obtained for Al 2024-Ta2C + Al2O3 + MWCNTs, and the wear rate was reduced by 11 times.

Effect of Wettability and Uniform Distribution of Reinforcement Particle on Mechanical Property (Tensile) in Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite-A Review

There is a massive demand for low-weight high strength materials in automotive, space aerospace, and even structural industries in this present engineering world. These industries attract composites only because of their high strength, resistance to wear, and low weight. Among these composites, metal matrix composite finds wide applications due to its elevated properties, excellent resistance property, corrosion resistance, etc. The reinforcements exist in particles, fiber, and whiskers. Among the three, particles play an important role because of their availability and wettability with the metal matrix. Additionally, among the various metal matrices such as aluminum, magnesium, copper, titanium, etc., aluminum plays a vital role among metal matrices because of its cost, availability in abundance, and castability. Stir casting is the most inexpensive and straightforward composite fabrication technique among the prevailing techniques. Even though so many factors contribute to the elevated property of composites, metal matrix, and reinforcement phase, uniform distribution and wettability are essential factors among all the other factors. This review aims to develop a composite with elevated property in a cost-effective manner. Cost includes metal matrix, reinforcement, and processing technique. Various works have been tabulated to achieve the above objective, and analysis was carried out on tensile strength concerning microstructure. This review paper explores the challenges in composite fabrication and finds a solution to overcome them.

Mechanisms and FEM Simulation of Chip Formation in Orthogonal Cutting In-Situ TiB₂/7050Al MMC

The in-situ TiB₂/7050Al composite is a new kind of Al-based metal matrix composite (MMC) with super properties, such as low density, improved strength, and wear resistance. This paper, for a deep insight into its cutting performance, involves a study of the chip formation process and finite element simulation during orthogonal cutting in-situ TiB₂/7050Al MMC. With chips, material properties, cutting forces, and tool geometry parameters, the Johnson–Cook (J–C) constitutive equation of in-situ TiB₂/7050Al composite was established. Then, the cutting simulation model was established by applying the Abaqus–Explicit method, and the serrated chip, shear plane, strain rate, and temperature were analyzed. The experimental and simulation results showed that the obtained material’s constitutive equation was of high reliability, and the saw-tooth chips occurred commonly under either low or high cutting speed and small or large feed rate. From result analysis, it was found that the mechanisms of chip formation included plastic deformation, adiabatic shear, shearing slip, and crack extension. In addition, it was found that the existence of small, hard particles reduced the ductility of the MMC and resulted in segmental chips.
