Despite the appearance of living fun, luxurious, care-free lifestyles, they are vulnerable to exceptional stressors and the same mental health challenges as the general population. The use of screening tools and assessment guided by a biopsychosocial framework can assist in understanding the factors that contribute to the athlete's mental health status. This can facilitate the development of a targeted management approach to mental health challenges.

The wide range of challenges facing college athletes often results in the need for micro and macro mental health services. This article examines a competency-based model of integrated care. A team of mental health professionals must be intentionally created to support athletes throughout various aspects of their unique experience.
