Effect of digestible amino acids to energy ratios on performance and yield of two broiler lines housed in different grow-out environmental temperatures

High-energy and high-amino acid diet enhances production performance and antioxidant capacity in yellow-feathered broilers under heat stress

This study investigated the ameliorating effects of high-energy and high-amino acid (HEHA) diets on heat stress (HS) in yellow-feathered broilers. Broilers aged 35 d were randomly assigned to 3 groups: control and HS groups fed the basic normal diet, and the HEHA group fed the HEHA diet (basal diet + 100 kcal/kg AME + 15 % DAAs). The HS and HEHA groups were exposed to cyclic HS (30 ± 1 to 34 ± 1 ℃) for 2 wk, while the control group was maintained at 26 ± 1 ℃. The results indicated that the HEHA diet significantly alleviated HS-induced feed intake and body weight loss. HEHA feeding mitigated the increase in body temperature during HS. Compared with observations in the HS group, the HEHA diet reduced the levels of ALT, Alb, and corticosterone in the serum and downregulated the gene expression of HSP27 and HSP60 in the liver. Moreover, the HEHA group showed higher GSH-px activity in the serum and SOD and GSH-Px activity in the jejunal mucosa than that of the HS group. HEHA supplementation also reduced MDA levels in the liver. In conclusion, the HEHA diet improved the production performance of broilers under HS by increasing their antioxidant capacities. These findings suggest an effective strategy to combat HS in poultry production.

Leg disorders in broiler chickens: a review of current knowledge

Ensuring improved leg health is an important prerequisite for broilers to achieve optimal production performance and welfare status. Broiler leg disease is characterized by leg muscle weakness, leg bone deformation, joint cysts, arthritis, femoral head necrosis, and other symptoms that result in lameness or paralysis. These conditions significantly affect movement, feeding and broiler growth performance. Nowadays, the high incidence of leg abnormalities in broiler chickens has become an important issue that hampers the development of broiler farming. Therefore, it is imperative to prevent leg diseases and improve the health of broiler legs. This review mainly discusses the current prevalence of broiler leg diseases and describes the risk factors, diagnosis, and prevention of leg diseases to provide a scientific basis for addressing broiler leg health problems.

Sensitivity of broiler performance, organ weights and plasma constituents to amino acid supplementation and reused litter exposure using ideal protein-formulated rations

Effects of amino acid supplementation to ideal protein (IP) formulated rations were investigated on growth performance, plasma metabolites and organ weights of broilers placed on 100% recycled (reused) litter. Day-old Ross308 male broilers were raised on either clean or reused litter and fed for three weeks on one of five isoenergetic diets, where an IP-based control diet (C) was compared with diets containing threonine (T) or arginine (A) at 25% above requirements, or with 1% supplemented glutamine (G), or with each amino acid added (TAG). Litter and diet treatments did not strongly interact on outcomes. Reused litter placement resulted in greater weight gain, smaller feed conversion ratio and heavier bursal weights (P < 0.05) compared to clean litter placement. Relative to C and T birds, TAG birds reduced weight gain and feed intake (P < 0.05). Plasma uric acid levels in G birds were greater than in C, T and A birds (P < 0.001). Collectively, since the outcomes of placement on reused litter increased performance and the control diet was IP formulated, the absence of increased growth performance in response to amino acid supplementation would be consistent with amino acids tested being excess to requirements.

Influence of Expander Conditioning Prior to Pelleting on Pellet Quality, Broiler Digestibility and Performance at Constant Amino Acids Composition while Decreasing AMEN

Physical pellet quality and AMEN concentration are strongly related to each other in broiler feeding. A study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between dietary AMEN concentration and feed processing on pellet quality, nutrient digestibility, broiler performance, serum markers, and yield of commercial cuts. Six diets were formulated. The first diet had the recommended AMEN concentration, each further diet was calculated with 40 kcal/kg less, from 0 to −200 kcal/kg, resulting in six levels for each feed phase: starter (1−14 d), grower (15−28 d), and finisher (29−35 d). These diets were processed with and without expander conditioning prior to pelleting, using an average corn particle size of 1.6 mm, ground with a roller mill. A total of 1008 one-day-old male Ross 308 broiler chickens were placed in a 6 × 2 (6 energy levels and 2 conditionings) factorial trial with six boxes as replications, with three in each broiler performance trial period. Excreta were collected 2 days before the end of each feed phase for apparent total tract digestibility measurement. On day 36, four broilers from each replication (pen) were weighed and then euthanized for blood collection, following which the gastrointestinal organs were weighed, and the ileal and gizzard contents were collected. On day 37, all remaining broilers were slaughtered after fasting to measure commercial cuts and abdominal fat. The results show that the pellet durability index (PDI) was most affected by energy reducing and expander conditioning prior to pelleting, and it was better when diets had energy reduced by 40 to 200 kcal/kg (p > 0.001), as when expander conditioning was used. Digestibility of nutrients was slightly affected by treatments, as was the broiler performance; however, feed efficiency was improved in broiler-fed diets without AMEN reduction and when an expander was used, with p = 0.050 and p = 0.031, respectively. No effects were observed on the weight of gastrointestinal tract organs and serum markers, except for liver (p = 0.037) and α-amylase (p = 0.047). The lowest liver weight and lowest serum protein, cholesterol, triglyceride, gamma-glutamyl, and lipase concentrations were obtained when diets were formulated without energy reduction (Ross-0). There was no effect on commercial cuts relative to live weight at slaughter. The energy reduction was well reflected in the proportion of abdominal fat, which decreased when AMEN was reduced (p = 0.001). The present study shows it is possible to use diets with up to 200 kcal/kg reduction in AMEN without losses in performance, and the use of expander conditioning prior to pelleting promotes higher pellet quality and broiler feed efficiency.

A review of heat stress in chickens. Part II: Insights into protein and energy utilization and feeding

With the growing global demand for animal protein and rising temperatures caused by climate change, heat stress (HS) is one of the main emerging environmental challenges for the poultry industry. Commercially-reared birds are particularly sensitive to hot temperatures, so adopting production systems that mitigate the adverse effects of HS on bird performance is essential and requires a holistic approach. Feeding and nutrition can play important roles in limiting the heat load on birds; therefore, this review aims to describe the effects of HS on feed intake (FI) and nutrient digestibility and to highlight feeding strategies and nutritional solutions to potentially mitigate some of the deleterious effects of HS on broiler chickens. The reduction of FI is one of the main behavioral changes induced by hot temperatures as birds attempt to limit heat production associated with the digestion, absorption, and metabolism of nutrients. Although the intensity and length of the heat period influences the type and magnitude of responses, reduced FI explains most of the performance degradation observed in HS broilers, while reduced nutrient digestibility appears to only explain a small proportion of impaired feed efficiency following HS. Targeted feeding strategies, including feed restriction and withdrawal, dual feeding, and wet feeding, have showed some promising results under hot temperatures, but these can be difficult to implement in intensive rearing systems. Concerning diet composition, feeding increased nutrient and energy diets can potentially compensate for decreased FI during HS. Indeed, high energy and high crude protein diets have both been shown to improve bird performance under HS conditions. Specifically, positive results may be obtained with increased added fat concentrations since lipids have a lower thermogenic effect compared to proteins and carbohydrates. Moreover, increased supplementation of some essential amino acids can help support increased amino acid requirements for maintenance functions caused by HS. Further research to better characterize and advance these nutritional strategies will help establish economically viable solutions to enhance productivity, health, welfare, and meat quality of broilers facing HS.

Review: Physiological growth trend of current meat broilers and dietary protein and energy management approaches for sustainable broiler production

The food production system needs to be sustainable including poultry sector to feed the increasing global population. An accepted economical and environmental approach of broiler production is to produce larger broilers faster while using less feed. Broiler production is aimed at producing consumable meat and meat products. The global broiler meat market has evolved over the years with increasing selection pressure shifted toward attaining yield characteristics for increased cut-up parts such as breast and thighs. There is a shift toward a big bird market in the U.S. with approximately 70% of the broiler meat produced from large birds (>2.72 kg). Genetic selection of broilers for quantitative traits such as growth rate and lean muscle mass without increasing the fat mass has altered broiler physiological homeostasis to adapt toward the larger rates of muscle protein turnover. Physiological stresses created due to selection pressures in broilers have produced several muscle myopathies including an emerging one called woody breast myopathy. The sustainable broiler production practice may require humane consideration of raising broilers in less stressful grow-out regimes that will have minimal impact on broiler metabolic health. Another sustainability approach of broiler production toward feed efficiency lies on understanding dietary formulation approach of amino acids and energy that promote optimal nutrient utilization and minimal nutrient output to environment while also fulfilling the growth demands and body composition changes associated with increased protein gain in current meat broilers brought by the genetic progress.

Effects of dietary energy levels on performance and carcass yield of 2 meat-type broiler lines housed in hot and cool ambient temperatures

Two meat-type broiler lines, line A and line B were fed experimental diets from 22-42 d with objectives to determine the effects of dietary metabolizable energy (ME) levels on feed intake (FI), performance, body composition, and processing yield as affected by environmental grow-out temperatures. Two thousand fifty male chicks from line A and 2,050 male chicks from line B were reared in 90-floor pens, 45 chicks per pen utilizing primary breeder nutrition and husbandry guidelines for starter (1-10 d) and grower (11-21 d) phases. Experimental finisher diets consisted of 5 increasing levels of apparent nitrogen corrected ME (2,800, 2,925, 3,050, 3,175, and 3,300 kcal/kg set at 19.5% crude protein and 1.0% dLys at each level) to represent 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120% ME of Evonik AminoChick energy level giving 2 × 5 factorial design and were fed from 22-42 d. All other amino acid levels in diets were formulated to a fixed ratio of dLys level. There were nine replicate pens for each diet and each line. The experiment was conducted twice-once in hot season (barn averages: 77.55 ˚F and 86.04% RH) and another in cool season (barn averages: 69.91 ˚F and 63.98% RH) of the year. Results showed that FI and feed conversion ratios (FCR) decreased (P < 0.05) linearly (R² = 0.9) by 61.25 g and 0.073 units for every 10% increase in dietary ME for combined analysis of lines and seasons. The % fat mass of total body mass increased by 0.57%, whereas % protein mass decreased by 0.21% across ME levels (R² > 0.9). However, there was no difference (P > 0.05) in % weights (of live weight) for wings, breast filet, tenders, or leg quarters across ME levels for both lines except % fat pad that increased (P < 0.05) by 0.20% for each 10% increment in dietary ME level. Line B had higher cumulative FI, BW gain, % lean, and protein mass of body mass than line A in hot season (P < 0.05). Feed intake was not different between lines in cool season (P > 0.05), whereas higher BW and improved FCR were observed for line A. Line A had higher % fat mass in both seasons. In summary, performance and yield results as affected by dietary ME levels were line specific and were affected by grow-out seasons. The optimal dietary ME level for the ME range studied (2,800-3,000 kcal/kg) at a constant recommended amino acid level lies in determining the best performance and profitability indices by taking into account the grow-out production inputs and processing yield outputs.
