Abstract
Steroid-induced neuropsychiatric sequelae are common, and pose significant risks to people usually receiving glucocorticoids in the context of physical illness. Steroid-induced mania and hypomania are the most common of the acute complications, yet despite great progress in understandings in neurophysiology there are no recent studies which review the factors which might predict who will experience this severe complication, nor are there consensus guidelines on management. We report the unusual case of a woman in her 50s admitted to a psychiatric unit with steroid-induced mania despite compliance with two mood stabilisers, several days after the administration of a Dexamethasone and Docetaxel chemotherapy regime adjunctive to lumpectomy for breast cancer. She had previously been diagnosed with an organic affective disorder (with classical bipolar 1 pattern) following severe ventriculitis related to ventricular drain insertion for obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to a colloid cyst. She had no psychiatric illness before this brain injury, but has a maternal history of idiopathic bipolar 1 affective disorder. Her episode of steroid-induced mania resolved following use of sedative medications, continuation of her existing mood stabilisers, and reductions of the steroid dosing in collaboration with her oncology team, which also protected her from further manic relapses during continued chemotherapy. Established mental illness, a family history, and acquired brain injury may reflect risk factors for steroid-induced mania through currently unclear pathways. Future epidemiological studies could better confirm these observations, and basic neuroscience may look to further explore the role of extrinsic glucocorticoids in the pathophysiology of affective disorders.

Abstract
Observational studies have suggested that SARS-CoV-2 infection increases the risk of neurological diseases, but it remains unclear whether the association is causal. The present study aims to evaluate the causal relationships between SARS-CoV-2 infections and neurological diseases and analyzes the potential routes of SARS-CoV-2 entry at the cellular level. We performed Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis with CAUSE method to investigate causal relationship of SARS-CoV-2 infections with neurological diseases. Then, we conducted single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis to obtain evidence of potential neuroinvasion routes by measuring SARS-CoV-2 receptor expression in specific cell subtypes. Fast gene set enrichment analysis (fGSEA) was further performed to assess the pathogenesis of related diseases. The results showed that the COVID-19 is causally associated with manic (delta_elpd, - 0.1300, Z-score: - 2.4; P = 0.0082) and epilepsy (delta_elpd: - 2.20, Z-score: - 1.80; P = 0.038). However, no significant effects were observed for COVID-19 on other traits. Moreover, there are 23 cell subtypes identified through the scRNA-seq transcriptomics data of epilepsy, and SARS-CoV-2 receptor TTYH2 was found to be specifically expressed in oligodendrocyte and astrocyte cell subtypes. Furthermore, fGSEA analysis showed that the cell subtypes with receptor-specific expression was related to methylation of lysine 27 on histone H3 (H3K27ME3), neuronal system, aging brain, neurogenesis, and neuron projection. In summary, this study shows causal links between SARS-CoV-2 infections and neurological disorders such as epilepsy and manic, supported by MR and scRNA-seq analysis. These results should be considered in further studies and public health measures on COVID-19 and neurological diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many aspects of everyday life, including the (mental) healthcare system. An increase in depression and anxiety symptoms has been reported worldwide, and is particularly pronounced in females and young people. We aimed to evaluate changes in prescription rates for psychopharmacological medication, which is often used to treat depression and anxiety. METHOD Based on data from the Austrian public health insurance institutions, we conducted an interrupted time series analysis of antidepressants and antipsychotics, comparing prescription rate developments before and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic (2013 to 2021), with a special focus on adolescents (10-19 years) in comparison to the general population. Data were based on all public prescriptions in the outpatient sector nationwide. Age- and sex-stratified time-series models were fitted to the pre-COVID period (first quarter (Q1) of 2013 to second quarter (Q2) of 2020). These were used to generate forecasts for the period from the third quarter (Q3) of 2020 to the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2021, which were subsequently compared to observed developments in order to assess significant deviations from the forecasted development paths. RESULTS For the majority of the evaluated period, we found a significant excess of antidepressant prescriptions among both male and female adolescents (10-14 and 15-19 years) compared to the forecasted development path, while the general population was mostly within 97.5% confidence intervals of the forecasts. Regarding antipsychotics, the interrupted time series analysis revealed a significant excess in the group of female adolescents in almost all quarters, which was especially pronounced in the 15-19 age group. Prescription rates of antipsychotics in the general population only showed a significant excess in two quarters. CONCLUSION Increased rates of adolescents receiving psychopharmacological treatment echo the epidemiological trends of an increase in depression and anxiety symptoms reported in the literature. This increase is especially pronounced in female adolescents.

Abstract
A large number of people who have had COVID-19 have developed mental symptoms and mood disorders. Anxiety and depression prevail among affective pathology. Evidence is accumulating that the Sars-CoV-2 virus can induce mania or hypomania in people with no personal psychopathological history. Some clinical, anamnestic and paraclinical patterns of new-onset mania and hypomania have been found. In cases of severe manic symptoms, it is possible to quickly assume the occurrence of bipolar affective disorder. The predominance of depressive and anxiety syndromes in the long-term disease and the presence of vivid vegetative symptoms can mask brief and syndromally incomplete episodes of hypomania, which distorts the understanding of the disease as a bipolar disorder. This article presents such a clinical case of the occurrence of bipolar affective disorder in a patient who had COVID-19 with an asymptomatic course. Approaches to rational diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

Abstract
Mood disorders are among the commonest mental disorders worldwide. Epidemiological and clinical evidence suggests that there are close links between infectious diseases and mood disorders, but the strength and direction of these association remain largely unknown. Theoretical models have attempted to explain this link based on evolutionary or immune-related factors, but these have not been empirically verified. The current study examined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between the incidence of infectious diseases and mood disorders, while correcting for climate and economic factors, based on data from the Global Burden of Disease Studies, 1990-2019. It was found that major depressive disorder was positively associated with lower respiratory infections, while bipolar disorder was positively associated with upper respiratory infections and negatively associated with enteric and tropical infections, both cross-sectionally and over a period of 30 years. These results suggest that a complex, bidirectional relationship exists between these disorders. This relationship may be mediated through the immune system as well as through the gut-brain and lung-brain axes. Understanding the mechanisms that link these groups of disorders could lead to advances in the prevention and treatment of both.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To help to tackle gender-based violence against women in the aftermath of COVID-19 or other potential crisis situations, as recommended by the European Institute for Gender Equality, the present study aims to investigate the relationship between calls to the National Anti-violence Number (NAN) and the socio-sanitary pandemic factors during 2021, a period in which the scenario changed due to containment measures that gradually allowed women to emerge from the condition of isolation. In addition, the present work aims to identify significant changes in the number of calls to NAN during the progression of the pandemic in 2021. METHODS Using Italian Civil Protection Department data on the socio-sanitary pandemic factors (defined by daily number of cases, swabs, deaths, hospitalizations, dismissions, intensive care unit hospitalizations, people isolated at home, and quarantine after 15 and 30 days) and NAN data. Correlation analyses, a joinpoint regression analysis, and Granger causality tests were performed. RESULTS The number of calls correlated with the daily number of cases, swabs, deaths, hospitalizations, dismissions, intensive care unit hospitalizations, and quarantine after 15 and 30 days. The identified joinpoints showed significant changes in the number of daily anti-violence calls during the year. Furthermore, we found evidence of a significant causality between daily hospitalizations, daily home quarantined, daily dismissed patients, and calls to NAN. CONCLUSIONS The results underline the influence of containment measures on the increased access to NAN, suggesting the need for a greater implementation of social and psychological support services in other potential crisis situations.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 is a growing field of research and mental health in long COVID is one of its interesting domains. This scoping review aims at studying the outcomes of mental health in patients already known for psychiatric illness. This was done by researching the literature in two databases (Embase and PubMed) for articles studying mental health consequences of long COVID in patients already known for psychiatric history. Eleven studies were included. 6/11 studies found an effect of long COVID, with varying severity of outcomes studied, with either a worsening in length or severity. 4/11 did not find any correlation between worsening symptoms and psychiatric history. The methods for assessing which psychiatric symptoms to include and how to determine prior history were heterogeneous, making direct comparison sometimes difficult. The data seem to show worse effects of long COVID on mental health of patients with prior mental illness, with limitations regarding the heterogeneity of the studies' designs and focuses. It also highlights how neglected this population of patients is in the current state of research.

Abstract
Neuropsychiatric manifestations of the COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, are under close scrutiny as the virus is shown likely to either directly or indirectly affects the central nervous system although it mainly targets the respiratory tract. Here, we describe a middle-aged male who developed acute psychiatric symptoms after a recent COVID-19 infection with no prior personal or family history of psychiatric disorder. Although there are reported cases of diagnosed psychosis or affective disorders following COVID-19 infection in the literature, to our knowledge, this is the first case where the development of autoimmune encephalitis after COVID-19 was considered and ruled out. This case report describes the comprehensive evaluation of all possible organic etiology. We also aimed to discuss possible biological underpinnings of such an exceptional comorbidity.

Abstract
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been reports of neuropsychiatric symptoms following infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), most notably mania and psychosis. However, despite the widely reported incidence of psychosis and mania following infection with SARS-CoV-2, a causal link between the virus and these neuropsychiatric symptoms has not been established. A myriad of confounding factors such as underlying psychiatric disorders, personal and family psychiatric histories, substance use, and treatment with steroids all have the ability to obscure a correlation between SARS-CoV-2 and subsequent psychiatric symptoms. Here we present a case of a manic episode in a 40-year-old male following a COVID-19 infection. He had no past psychiatric history, no family psychiatric history, and no history of substance use. This case is unique in that the patient lacks all these typical confounding variables. It should serve as an example of a first-time manic episode following a recent infection with SARS-CoV-2. It may contribute data to future investigations seeking to better elucidate the correlation between SARS-CoV-2 and neuropsychiatric symptoms such as mania.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is growing evidence that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can trigger acute episodes of mood disorders or psychotic symptoms. Reports on the treatment of COVID-19-related bipolar disorder (BD) are limited. Our study aimed to investigate the potential for new or recurrent BD due to COVID-19. We qualitatively evaluate clinical treatments (acupuncture combined with medication) and any potential pathophysiological links between infection and BD. METHODS We searched Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and MEDLINE (via Web of Science), Scopus, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, and the Wanfang Database from December 1, 2019, to September 15, 2022, to identify all articles on acupuncture combined with drugs used to treat COVID-19 complicated with bipolar disorders. Two researchers will screen the articles and extract the relevant information. RESULTS The results will provide a systematic overview of the current evidence on the use of acupuncture combined with drug therapy to treat COVID-19 complicated with bipolar disorder. CONCLUSION The conclusions of this study will help clarify the effects of acupuncture combined with drug therapy on patients with COVID-19-related BD.

Abstract
Psychiatric symptoms frequently predate or complicate neurological disorders, such as neurodegenerative diseases. Symptoms of bipolar spectrum disorders (BSD), like mood, behavioral, and psychotic alterations, are known to occur - individually or as a syndromic cluster - in Parkinson's disease and in the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Nonetheless, due to shared pathophysiological mechanisms, or genetic predisposition, several other neurological disorders show significant, yet neglected, clinical and biological overlaps with BSD like neuroinflammation, ion channel dysfunctions, neurotransmission imbalance, or neurodegeneration. BSD pathophysiology is still largely unclear, but large-scale network dysfunctions are known to participate in the onset of mood disorders and psychotic symptoms. Thus, functional alterations can unleash BSD symptoms years before the evidence of an organic disease of the central nervous system. The aim of our narrative review was to illustrate the numerous intersections between BSD and neurological disorders from a clinical-biological point of view and the underlying predisposing factors, to guide future diagnostic and therapeutical research in the field.
